Shani's voice is still as youthful and lovely. The sparkle in her eyes shows her love of life. Thank you Shani for so many wonderful memories and moments.
What a beautiful lady, so sincere and warm. Oliver! was probably the last of the great musicals. Ron Moody, Oliver Reed, Shani Wallis.... Stunning performances.
It is a great movie and she gave it such grace, even though she played a lady of the evening who was, unfortunately in love with the wrong man. A tragic heroine and yet, she played it by seeing the good in everyone. And her singing was marvelous. I think “As long as he needs me” is difficult to pull off on film - in the show, the actress can break the fourth wall (lines like “in spite of what you see, etc.”) She does the song as a self-contained monologue, and beautifully. I also love how she transitions on “I won’t betray his trust.” Wonderful, dramatic key change and so full and meaningful.
She is one very fantastic actress. Her performance in Oliver was outstanding and so memorable to me when I first saw it back in the late 60s. I still own the original booklet album from then.
Jack Jack she absolutely did not play it the same. It’s 2 completely different performances of the same character across 2 completely different mediums. Georgia, on stage, was really just Georgia playing Nancy. Shani became Nancy. You knew what she was feeling and thinking before she even opened her mouth. Granted she didn’t have the stage limitations that Georgia did, where you can only do so much, but Shani’s is the much superior and iconic Nancy performance.
COULDNT agree more, I’ve always said this. If I ever watch anyone performing Oliver, I always compare the ‘Nancy’ to Shani… and regardless of how good the other actress is, I feel like ANY other Nancy would pale in comparison to Shani!!
Oliver is a great film on many levels, from the terrific writing and to the wonderful character acting . The catchy music score, top notch dancers to the brilliant choreography. It was always a family favorite in our family every Christmas as I was growing up, and it still holds a fond place in our hearts all these years later. A timeless Cinematic Classic.
+Scots Lass i agee-- first seen it when i was 10 -- im 58 now.. at the time i thought she was drop dead gorgeous and i was in love with jack wild as many young girls were at the time
Oh, Shani, it was so good to be with you - again - after all these years! I just watched Oliver again last night, the 50th anniversary for that film. I was so touched by your performance - and the performance each and every cast member the first time I saw this film and felt just the same last night when I watched it again, but you know, it was even sweeter, even sadder, even more extraordinary than the first time I saw it. (And, as a little girl, I knew ALLLLLL the songs by heart, since my dear mother, like you, was just a shining star that warmed hearts with song). Much love and gratitude to you and please - share with the cast, as well. I guess I've just taken to you, so strong, it's clear we're going to get along....I feel as though we're all part of the family:) Much, much love out to you.
To shani. I watched your film when I was 12. I learnt all of the songs. I still sing them now. You were all amazing. I guess you still are. I always wanted to star as nancy in a play. Though I never did I want to say thank you for all the fun you have given me. Xxxxx Lionel Bart was the most amazing writer.
We did enjoy Oliver! Madame Shani Wallis, and we'll probably hand it over to our future generations and in time they'll do the same.Your performance was SUPERB in the movie madame wallis. And I really admire your modesty. Thanks for uploading this video.
I think also Nancy stood for the truth and the goodness. She may have been brought into that life young and she knew good from bad, right from wrong (stayed in the abusive relationship that she did out of loneliness so when she thought someone loved her she needed him so much) so she's fairly damaged but she stood up for what was right. There was a heroic nature in Nancy and you rooted for her to do the right thing and by Oliver
When I watched Oliver for the first time as a child I thought Shani Wallis as such a beautiful woman. She looked absolutely gorgeous as Nancy. That red dress with the purple underskirt made her really pop on screen. Her voice was just a powerhouse and her musical numbers were amazing. As long as he needs me was so powerful and moving. She nearly cracked her head open when Bill hits her. You can see her moving abit early to react but she did fall really hard against the step. You can see it so clearly and her reaction was so real and of course having to act like she got hurt and but almost nearly really injuring herself added so much to it.
My first crush!! This is probably my all time favorite movie....I saw it in fifth grade.and the effect it had on me was profound...simply magical!! I still love to watch it,and I am so glad this, sweet, beautiful, talented lady,is still here with us!!
Oliver! was the first musical I remember as a kid and my parents had the album. I listened to it often and still do from time to time. One of the bigger movies of my childhood. Loved her in this movie.
Best Nancy ever ever ever. So brilliant to cast someone with some femininity and not just a raucous bar maid. Shani has that Judy Garland thang where you can’t take your eyes off her when she’s on screen. I always struggled to understand “As Long As He Needs Me” because it goes against the grain of who I am as a woman, but I rewatched it (unflinching, for 2.5 hours) last night and thought, for the first time, I could relate to it as an animal-lover - i.e., a puppy you’ve raised that’s grown up to be aggressive, but you know you’ll never be able to give him/her up to be euthanized or stuck in a cage forever.
Ahhh yes this lady has inspired many with her performance as Nancy....As Long As he needs Me....it was amazing in the movie and so was she....she was in her early 40's too when she did it can you believe that!!!! i thought she was only 25 lol!!! What a lady!
The beautiful and extremely talented actress, singer, dancer, and entertainer Shani Wallis should have received the Golden Globe Award, the BAFTA Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Academy Award for best actress in in a movie for her brilliant portrayal of Nancy in the 1968 classic movie Oliver! The 1968 movie Oliver! is one of my favorite movies of all time! It should be Dame Shani Wallis! All of her performances are excellent! I was born in late fall of 1978! Age is just a number, and she doesn't have to list it! A lovely and beautiful person forever!
Just came across her singing, one of the best voices, glad Oliver Found her talents, but do feel she should have been given top songs to be on par with Bassey, love her voice
I took 2 of my fraternity brothers to see her at the Playboy Club in San Francisco in the early 70’s. She was so charming and made a point to come to our table to say hello. I loved her.
She seems really lovely. The film was overblown though, and needed to be tougher. I heard that there was a new version in the works with Adele as Nancy?
Shani's voice is still as youthful and lovely. The sparkle in her eyes shows her love of life. Thank you Shani for so many wonderful memories and moments.
❤Lovely as she was back then!👌The eye's sparke like a young girl's!❤👌😘🏴
What a beautiful lady, so sincere and warm. Oliver! was probably the last of the great musicals. Ron Moody, Oliver Reed, Shani Wallis.... Stunning performances.
What about Jack Wild?
And mark lester
I'm a musical theater buff and I approve this message!
You know mark lester didn’t do his own singing
@@marycrosby8317 From what I have read, he did a lot of it, but the director's niece sang some high notes and hard notes.
I was named after Shani Wallis. My father loved her and her singing; hence, when I was born my name became "Shani." Thanks Mom & Dad! :)
A film of pure genius - will never be matched. You don't need computer effects to make brilliant art.
Very true 🏆🌹
What a lovely lady. She was lovely in 1968, and she is still a doll.
She still has the same bright smile and cheeky glint in her eye ;) adorable. Love her!!
It is a great movie and she gave it such grace, even though she played a lady of the evening who was, unfortunately in love with the wrong man. A brilliant pairing with Oliver Reed. As a child I was scared to death of him.
Fabulous Nancy couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role.
I read that Oliver Reed stayed in character the whole time, on breaks etc, and the children were terrified of him..
The way Shani holds a series of notes in 'As long as he needs me' is superb. This song was sung as never before.
She is 82 and looks amazing! Where did the time go?? I love Oliver!
Actually she will be 85 this year!
I watch Oliver! regularly and Shani's rendition of As Long As He Needs Me rips my heart out every. Single. Time. Astonishing performance.
She is one very fantastic actress. Her performance in Oliver was outstanding and so memorable to me when I first saw it back in the late 60s. I still own the original booklet album from then.
Shani, You are timeless and wonderful, thank you so much for our Nancy
She was magic in Oliver. She’s the bees knees
Worked on that film at Shepperton Studios for over a year great film great music great cast.
she looks great for 80!
She played / created THE Nancy, who all others can but imitate.
Phased Spaces nope. She played it the same way as Georga Brown, the original.
You could never have put Georgia Brown's performance on the screen. Not in a million years. Wrong medium for her.
COULDNT agree more, I’ve always said this. If I ever watch anyone performing Oliver, I always compare the ‘Nancy’ to Shani… and regardless of how good the other actress is, I feel like ANY other Nancy would pale in comparison to Shani!!

Beautiful lady, who has stuck with me since I first saw her as a kid.
I love how Nancy took care of the boys and taught them how to treat a lady.
She was very Lucky to have played Nancy? We were the Lucky ones.
They don't make films like this any more, nor have actors like this. True, talent .
+Scots Lass i agee-- first seen it when i was 10 -- im 58 now.. at the time i thought she was drop dead gorgeous and i was in love with jack wild as many young girls were at the time
julie miller I'm 11 and I wish he was alive and my age

She's the best Nancy of em all. When I first saw the film I was shocked that she got killed. What a great movie. Still holds up today.
Shani played Nancy so well in Oliver! Brilliant actress and singer/performer!
To shani. I watched your film when I was 12. I learnt all of the songs. I still sing them now. You were all amazing. I guess you still are. I always wanted to star as nancy in a play. Though I never did I want to say thank you for all the fun you have given me. Xxxxx

Loved seeing the movie again the other night. Brought back memories of my father. Her performance remains one of my favorites! What a beautiful lady
Whenever I watch any Oliver related things their Nancy's don't NEARLY compare to Shani's. Absolutely LOVE her
She is lovely, I can't believe she is still going. God bless her.

BEST NANCY EVER!
It was this actress who made that movie for me. She was so brilliant in that role.
It broke my what happen to Nancy. Even to almost to tears.
I still cry over Nancy. I love her with all my heart! :'( ❤️
Still beautiful. Her talent made the film, and the great Ron Moody.

This lady could sing and act fantastic
What a brilliant movie Oliver was! Great score great acting, great everything!!!
I never understood why she didn’t get an Oscar nomination at least.
Oliver! was the first musical I remember as a kid and my parents had the album. I listened to it often and still do from time to time. One of the bigger movies of my childhood. Loved her in this movie.
What a great lady! Hardly aged at all! I think she's fantastic in Oliver!, not just for her singing but her brilliant acting in her dramatic scenes.

Shani and Ron moody both from Tottenham
She was the best Nancy of all time, Dickens would of loved Shani.
She seems really lovely. The film was overblown though, and needed to be tougher. I heard that there was a new version in the works with Adele as Nancy?
