I've done edge banding several times over the years successfully, but I always come back to this video for a quick refresher. Great idea to save these videos for us non professionals
A good tip for you: Since the Iron heats both the veneer and the adhesive, it is best to cool them both with a damp cloth. After ironing the veneer down, simply wipe the veneer with a damp cloth to cool and set the adhesive. Any area that did not stick can be reheated to activate the glue and then cool it again with the damp cloth. Trust me, this is the way to go. Great channel. Keep up the great work!
I was curious to ask as far as the temperature setting on the iron? Also when standing down the edges like that what are we talking about for grit? 220?
Coincidentally, I needed to edge band a drawer that had been trimmed leaving the plywood showing. You didn't really show me anything I didn't already THINK I knew, but you confirmed the procedure and gave me confidence to go ahead. The job came out very nicely. Thank you.
Thank you for confirming in my mind how to do this. Someone at the company that makes the edge banding suggested to me to use a piece of parchment paper between the iron and the new edging piece in case you have anything burned onto your iron that might come off onto the new band as you iron it on. I thought that was a great suggestion, as irons often have burnt spray starch on them.
i am amazed your very ver5y clear dmon on how to edge band and i like your very clear instructions and with all the simplicity i d hope you keep uploading videos for di'yers so much so people can easily do things with all the simplistic approach needed to get the job done.
In the cabinetry shop I work at, we flush the edge of the banding to the finished side of the plywood. Then we just take a file and get the overhang off that way. Never seen a edge band trimmer like that, it's really neat
@josher1129 The nice thing about using a file is that it will basically last forever because the glue can easily be removed with a stiff brush, whereas with the edge band trimmer, the blade will gunk up and dull from the glue in the edge banding. What file does your shop use for edge banding?
I bought this as a gift for my friend ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.
I really appreciate your in-depth tutorials. This one included. One thing I’d like to know, is the temperature for the iron, and steam or no steam? I had to edge band a round table and I’m never sure about how hot the iron should be.
Major thanks for many great videos! I have a lot of cabinets to build and I don't think I'd get anywhere without the help of your videos. Meanwhile, one edge-banding suggestion borrowed from someone named Stumpy: if the banding has any angled grain, only trim one side at a time and in the direction of the grain. It helps prevent the trimmer blade from digging in and tearing out the edge. I don't know how often that's likely to happen or what increases the risk other than the grain angle (poorly held trimmer??? a dull blade that grabs instead of cuts???) but overall I think it makes sense.
Fantastic tutorial. I have never really worked with wood and you have helped me understand some basics! Whatvwas the yellow too you used called again please?
With the double sided trimmer, one side is going against the grain and can be pulled in. In another video, it was suggested to do each edge with the grain to minimize the little bumps. I was looking for a temperature on the iron. Cotton or polyester? Thanks for the great video!
I had a question about the heat of the iron, but searched the comments and found the answer. I have a edge banding project coming up and you made the process crystal clear!! Great video Jason!!
Use a cooling block. As you apply heat with the iron have a smooth hand block following behind pressing down and cooling the tape down faster. You get a much better bond with the plywood.
I'm a custom cabinet maker and it's still used today. I'll only use real wood veneer edge banding. For solid color I use PVC edge band and contact cement it on. The pre-glued polyester edge tape is garbage.@@gregre052
Great video! Any suggestions if you were to edge band more than just the front? I'm interested in your technique for finishing a corner if both adjoining sides are edge banded.
That looks much easier than wrapping the edge with solid wood...I tried edge banding years ago...I assume the glues are better now...I will look into this again..great video by the way 😉
My Opinion thank you again Sir. I used hardwood as well for the longest time and then finally bought some edge banding. So easy and fast to apply and I have had no issues with it coming off thus far.
Jason, I have not used edge banding in the past as I'm concerned for its long term adhesion. Have you found that the glue holds up well over the long haul as doors and drawers are used. Also, have you stained any pieces? I ask because I'm wondering if the stain where the edges meet will be darker and draw attention to the glue line. Thanks
Hi can you help, I know it🎉probably me but regarding the edgebanding trimmer I've bought a few gone to use it and just rips the edgebanding to bits. It looks like the bits are fitted inside but I could be wrong, do I have to start by fitting a blade although it looks like one is there or am I wrong because I have no idea what I'm looking for I would be pulling my hair out if I had any 😂. Geoff
Hi, now edge banging for your own self is good but for clients work such as wardrobes do you think its good enough to do yourself ? i mean will it really last and not peel off?
Thanks for the video. Could I put edge banding over existing edge banding without removing the old banding? The current one was white but has since yellowed.
I see the veneer that you used is unfinished and will finish with the rest of the panel. When using pre-finished banding on pre-finished panels should I worry much about sealing the trimmed edge of the banding? (Real wood not PVC)
I have melamine maple-colored edge banding now. I want to paint my cabinets white. Can I use white melamine edge banding on TOP OF the existing melamine edge banding? Or will it only adhere to plywood or particle board?
Tracy Siddall I’m not really sure, I have never tried that. You could test it out on some scrap wood and see how it works. I would be interested to find out
Great video and thanks for the consistent help! What if you need a perimeter edge band (4 sides)? Do you just butt the corners and sand smooth, or try and wrap the corners and let it crack then sand it smooth?
is recommended to use an Iron temperature setting around 370-400 degrees F or otherwise; your wood edge banding will burn off and ruin your project. One thing you should do is to wait for at least 30 seconds after applying heat so that the glue melts completely and sticks onto plywood properly
I tried to use the trimmer but why is that I trimmed the surface of the plywood, it looked ugly. is that problem with mu trimmer or my technique is wrong?help me please
I’ve stained my birch plywood, including the sides, then I realized I should have put edge banding on. Do you know if the glue will stick to oil based stain?
I have been searcing for a good brand of 3/4 to 7/8” birch edge banding. Bought 2-3 dfferent brands and all crappy. Either dont adhere well or the splice is terrible or they tear out badly when trimming excess. Any tips
Unfortunately I don’t know the brand I use. I have had good results thought. Take a look at the Fast cap edge banding trimmers or consider using a flush trim bit.
The difference would be that edge banding is much faster and consistent, and often sold as a match to the finished plywood. Making your own hardwood finish would be superior in terms of durability, but has challenges in terms of the finish matching the finished plywood, and would be much more expensive in terms of labor.

How do you prevent/deal-with glue squeeze out onto the plywood?
Nice explaination
Hi, now edge banging for your own self is good but for clients work such as wardrobes do you think its good enough to do yourself ? i mean will it really last and not peel off?
Depends on the quality of edge banding you are using and the method of applying it
What is the temperature settings on the iron ?
I saw one video where a guy used a trim router to trim up edge banding. Seemed to get a good result.
Definitely an option
Awesome instructions!! We order from your links!!! Hope the wife doesn’t notice the iron is gone. 😂😂😂
Lol yeah you don’t want to get in trouble
Thanks for the video. Could I put edge banding over existing edge banding without removing the old banding? The current one was white but has since yellowed.
Personally I wouldn’t add any over existing edge banding
Yes but it'll show on the edges. Use a razor to peel off the old banding, scrape off the old glue, then apply new banding.
@@brianb3107 A little heat helps also.

Try using minimal pressure when squeezing it together
Tried minimal pressure but sometimes it is not fully trimmed. Do you have solution for the thin edging?
is it possible to edge band 1/4 inch?
I suppose you could. I have never tried personally
I’ve stained my birch plywood, including the sides, then I realized I should have put edge banding on. Do you know if the glue will stick to oil based stain?
You will probably experience some issues with adhesion
never used edge banding . does it come in a variety of woods and colors?
Sure does
Does it hold up?
Depends on the edge banding and what it’s being used on

Making your own hardwood finish would be superior in terms of durability, but has challenges in terms of the finish matching the finished plywood, and would be much more expensive in terms of labor.
do you run into the issue of some edge banding not cutting clean where it slightly tears into the face portion of the banding
