One thing to know when reading Lord of the Rings: Tolkien originally intended it to be a sequel to his children's book, The Hobbit. So the beginning is very much still "children's book" mode. A few chapters in, it shifts to more adult themes and narrative style that you might enjoy more.
even if you are not a fantasy fan, you being a horror/dark lit fan, I would HIGHLY recommend you read Terry Pratchett's MORT! so well written and so funny! ask hubby about Pratchett
I'm impressed you're loving Irvine Welsh so much. Im scottish and it can take me a couple of days until i can get into his style of writing and language. Enjoy Trainspotting, it should add to your love of the movie
I'm also an Irvine Welsh lover, I actually live in Edinburgh and have met him once. His book "The Acid House" is another one you'd love, it's 22 short stories and in typical Irvine Welsh fashion they're a little fucked up, funny, and a great read!
I am in love with Chandler Morrison books, and he just came out with one I've heard amazing things about called "american narcissus" which you should check out. BUT ALSO you NEED to check out "Along the Path of Torment" by him which is by far my favorite he's ever wrote. IT IS SO GOOD!!!
There are many who hate fantasy but love Lord of the Rings. Tolkien was an extremely intelligent wordsmith, and his love of deep mythological lore shines through wonderfully. Of course, eh, you may hate it.
The Winter People was not my favorite. However, Jennifer McMahon wrote a book before that called THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY which is one of the greatest thrillers I’ve ever read. Thank you for encouraging people to read Welsh!
Yeah, I wrote and sent you "American Millennial." Thanks for mentioning it. I hope you enjoy it. :) Honestly, I just didn't think of leaving a note lol. It was only at a #1 spot for a couple days, but it still counts. Usually, I handmake my paperbacks, and I could do that next time if you want.
@@intersexcryptid there are a lot of ways to make your own books. I have a larger color printer for covers and a little business printer for interiors. The right card stock is necessary for covers, so go for something lighter than 65 lb paper. Normal copy paper is 20 lbs, so you have a frame of reference. The interior paper I use is 18 lbs, but you don’t have to get that specific weight if you don’t want to. Once the pdf of the interior is printed in a booklet format, I use a heavy duty guillotine paper cutter to cut it down the middle. Then, I sandwich it over, trim the edges off, and hold it together with binder clips. After that, I use a bone folder to make creases on the cover, a putty knife and wood glue on the spine of the interior, tightly wrap the cover around it, clip it together again, scrape off any excess glue, and it dries in maybe ten minutes.
I just finished the Fellowship of the Ring. One of my favorite parts of it and The Hobbit is following where the characters are on the map as they travel. Those books are very much about journey, and the detailed maps really enhance the read.
If you want another book to read with your husband & is horror, considering he likes video games, try Dead Space Catalyst. I haven't read it myself yet (I've got a rather big backlog) but if he's too scared, try God of War 1. I'm currently nearly halfway through that & it's the perfect companion piece to the game as it provides further details & plot not in the game & it holds up well as a stand alone novel. Any video game based novel will do just fine except Metal Gear Solid. That one adapted its source material too literally to the point where it feels like the author is just writing as he sees what happens in game.
Lord of the rings is an absolute masterpiece, but it is extremely slow, but it’s worth the payoff if you’re OK with reading multiple books at once I recommend taking breaks to read something like a thriller, but the payoff for Lord of the rings is something you will never regret
Ok I love fantasy and I am an avid reader but I had a problem getting through Lord of the Rings, I am not saying it is a bad book, it is a great book but it is not a easy read, I do not recommend it as a way to get someone to start reading, it is written to be like a entry in a history book and it can be really meandering. The story is good but even if I am in danger of being tossed out of the fantasy fanclub for saying this Tolkien was a better linguist and historian and general academic than he was fiction author.
When you started reading you skipped the prologue. Don't forget to read the prologue! You don't want to miss the section about weed. And if it feels slow, stick with it until they get to Bree. It really picks up at that point. And if you like horror, Tolkien writes some real black metal-type characters and places that just have an unsurpassed evil vibe, like the the Nazgul, Shelob, Minas Morgul, Cirith Ungol, the Watcher in the Dark, etc. There has been comparisons between Tolkien and Lovecraft.
I have the same feeling about the fantasy genre! I am personally not into the worldbuilding nor magical creatures and prefer much more a story that has more realistic elements. Not that that theres something wrong with that but its just that I dont vibe with that. I've seen such a high rise for the genre that its crazy, I am happy for those who enjoy it but I wish there was more variety in the popular books nowadays. Thanks for the haul! Waiting for the vlong 😄
I'm so excited to hear your thoughts on LOTR! I love the books and am actually almost done rereading them for the third time. There are definitely loads of creepy/horror-adjacent situations in them, imo :D
I'm so sorry when you read "ring wraiths" I cringed 😂😂 I grew up with being read the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and it is one of my treasured books of all time. It's high fantasy but has some very dark, horrifying elements to it. I think you'll enjoy the writing if nothing else.
The way I felt personally called out by the title of this video 🤣 i too am also addicted to books and my fiancé has talked me into a book buying ban (for the time being). I may get kindle unlimited as a compromise 🤐
Nice to see Alan Baxter's name mentioned. I have only read 2 of his books so far, but I have enjoyed them both. "The Book Club" was a mystery / light cosmic horror book, and it was pretty interesting. But "the Roo" was an absolute blast. A huge, insanely violent kangaroo murders it's way through a small Australian town. Just a ton of pure fun.
I rarely read fantasy. I've always prefered sci-fi. When I was younger I thought that fantasy is silly (with the exception of Tolkien). Then, not that long ago, I was feeling the urge to read a fantasy book (young adult even!) that I thought I would never read because of its silly title - "A Wizard of Earthsea" (which in my language is even sillier). Short, simple book, not much happening (not like the modern stuff, I guess), the author was new to this as well.... Loved it. The whole series. Le Guin was a great writer, wise, yet down-to-earth. But to be fair there's a reason why I'm not bothered by fantasy. I think it's because I love fairytales, myths, history so I start from there.
I bought Don’t Fear the Reaper by accident when my Barnes & Noble had a 50% sale, so I bought My Heart is a Chainsaw from Ebay because I realized it was a trilogy, but I have been waiting to read them for the third book to come out, and now I have just found out the third book is out. I guess it’s finally time to read the books 😂
I read trainapotting in high school and it is a wild dark weird book. The movie is in many ways nothing like the book which sort of reminds me of naked lunch on how disjointed and strange it is.
I also bought home is where the bodies are for the same reason. I haven't read it yet, but it looks fun. You should read the first (my heart is a chainsaw) in summer. It ends with a great 4th of july celebration scene. I haven't read anything by Irvine Welsh, but you have me intrigued!
Ur so adorable!! u have been missed. Thought something happened to u. Luv Mique. Havent read all of his books yet but I have them! I think u will like Geneva Rose. Can't wait to hear ur thoughts on them. Ty so much for sharing with us!
Actually just finished reading Home is Where the Bodies Are this past Sunday night/Monday morning in one sitting. Not a big fan of thrillers, but it was absolutely worth the read.
#thighgap is not extreme horror, but it's really good. I loved it! The author does a great job of getting into the mind of a girl with an ED. It wasn't what I expected, and it is now a permanent part of my home library. I hope you enjoy it! 🙂
I think you'll love The family Upstairs and at the end u'll probably see the sequel book to it so check it. Also might I recommend The Twisted Ones, and Into the Drowning Deep. Very good sea book. I just finished The Night Parade after one of your vids and I loved it so much. Thanks.
if you want your husband to start reading more, PLEASE chose something that is not that demanding as Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter is the perfect pick. the second one is somewhat in your alley.
You quickly became one of my favorite UA-camrs! I love listening to what you think about the books you read. You always bring up great points that really get me thinking! I really vibe with you as well so i think that plays into it hehe 🫶🏻
I'm also a huge horror fan who could never get into fantasy. I feel the exact same way when a knight or dragon or something appears. It's like my eyes just glaze over. There are a few genres I'm not crazy about, but high fantasy especially just cannot seem to click. Even horror fantasy, unless it's modern with a more liberal usage of the world, just doesn't do it for me. Unfortunately, I was forced to read Lord of the Rings for a class, and I HATED it. It's more like a history book, only everything is pretend. I wish I could get into that sort of thing, though, since it's so popular and caters to so many people.
I'd say Lord of the Rings is a bad call for him. Fellowship is a very very slow book. Unless you love world building and lore building it will be a slog. It's a great series, but Fellowship is a hard read for no fans. Give The Hobbit a try, shorter, wonderful tale wonderfully told and grabs from the very first words. Feels like a great story teller is reading an epic tale to you.
Well yes, I'd agree, it's more than its genre, genre really is just a cloak anyway. It's also great for observing people, group mentality, how Hitler gathered. I think it'd be a better choice for you and hubby than LOTR because you've seen it and I think it's more an accessible read than the complicated lore of LOTR. Like those books are seriously fantasy and I think they are much more densely written. The writing in HP is just much more engaging for a non-reader hence it attracted so many kids who did not read but don't worry they don't feel young especially in those later books they're just really engaging.

The Books of Blood... fabulous. Love early Barker the most.
