  • This video is a Fwy cruise test using the most popular cruising speeds of 65/70MPH. I jetted my carburetor for economy although I did do a repeat of the same route with a #66 jet 2 sizes richer after this video and I did not see much loss of MPG maybe less that 1/4 basically the same 15 MPG .
15 MPG is a giant leap for this old truck with a 390 big block it's aF250 And it's heavy with no arrow dynamic at all.
I go 70MPH now at 2,300 RPM Before it went 55 at 2,500 RPM and was miserable to drive on the FWY 65 was 3,000 RPM before and only 8 MPG 80 miles per tank.
I have a 3:73 gear ratio a car or truck with a 3:23 axle ratio might see 25 MPG or more .

15 mpg's is great mileage for an FE, the gear vendors is a nice addition. You got those cruise RPM's way down.

I drive it on the Fwy all the time now before I couldn't at best it made 8 mpg at 55 mph .
I go out at night and do a 150 Mile cruise when there's no traffic cruise 65/70 like a new truck 😊

Yes I can . That is a AFR Gauge /Air fuel Ratio it"s a wideband 02 sensor there's a lot of info on the web including a chart of what a carbureted engine should read on the AFR gauge . To install you need a O2 bung in your exhaust pipe it reads oxygen and carbon monoxide to target the best fuel milage on the Fwy I have it set to mid to high 13"s the lowest #12:90 was my richest cylinders usually 2-3 and 6-7 there right under the intake ports and my leanest cylinders were high 13:90 to around 14.10 or so . Lowest #s mean rich highest #s read lean on a carburetor AFR gauge some can go higher than 14:10 but not many without surging or cutting out . I was using a 64 main jet on a classic Holly 600 cfm vacuum secondary carburetor. By using different jet sizes it will change the AFR that's an easy way to tune it your idle should be somewhere in the high 12"s like 12:90 to around 13:60 13"s ok your mid range power or light pedal should be in the low 13"s to high 12"s and your Wide open throttle should be in high 11"s to 12:20 12:40 although some engines can take different #s but that the idea.
I re jetted it to a 65 jet and the #s were in the 1290 to 1360/1380 and I did not notice any loss in mpg but then it was only 1 jet size change hope this helps .

With today's gas and electronic ignition an AFR gauge is must have for the do-it-yourself performance enthusiast like myself and others otherwise you don't know what the carburetor is doing. The old schoolers used to do plug reads but I find that plug reads are very hard to do with the ethanol gas I've pulled out my plugs and even though the AFR gauge read correctly my plugs look brand new .

@@TheThirdWheel618 to be honest I thought it was the gear vendor display, but thank you I learned a lot, my truck has the air injection system, into the exhaust, but no port for a CO2, 1986 , stock everything, quadrajet, th400, I rebuilt the 454 stock, at 55 mph I'm showing 1 mpg gain with the gear vendor, timed, tuned, rebuilt carb, clean plugs after 20k, I daily drive it 60 miles a day, open road, what would you do to gain mpg, I live in a county in county that is smog exempt, LS swap? I doing something wrong with the speed, I have no tach, probably need one, thanks Merry Christmas
