Why I Bought The Olympus OM D E M1 Mark II in 2023

  • I recently bought myself a used camera that is a few years old. When I decided to take up photography again (and UA-cam as well...), I did not really want to spend lots of money on it. So I thought long and hard about which camera would be useful. I considered a lot of options and could have gone with something else. But in this video I will explain why I finally decided to buy the Olympus OM D E M1 Mark II.

    I now shoot with the OM1 alongside the EM1.2, and previously shot with a G9, but the EM1.2 remains my favorite from an ergonomics standpoint. Great camera and an absolute bargain in the used market. That will leave you plenty of money to invest in good glass!

    The EM1 series is great. I have a Mark II as well as the original. The Mark II was a huge step up. It’s a great choice for the price.

      Battery life alone is reason enough to pick the mark ii over the mark I. The mark 1 seems to go from saying full battery to almost empty battery with no warning, even with the battery I bought new.

    Accidentally purchased this camera. Was going to a workshop and lost my Panasonic G9. I purchased the OMD EM1 Mii for $300 on Craigslist. A couple weeks later I purchased the 12-40mm pro lens for $300 too.
    I like the colors from this Olympus camera. The IBIS is very good. Sturdy. Lightweight. This was the Olympus flagship body for a while. The Miii and OM-1 don’t seem all that much better than the Mii. Bought this body at a great price. Happy I have it and the lens.

      Wow that's a great price you got it for! I think that the Mii body is the perfect compromise between quality and price on the second hand market. And the lenses! They are so small, cheap and light compared to the bigger sensors. I'm sure you're going to enjoy taking pictures with it!

    The prices are looking very attractive recently. Mark II for $410, Mark III $710 or X $720 - which do you think is the best deal?

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  7 місяців тому +1

      For me, Mark II has all I need. I heard that Mark III might be a bit better when it comes to focus stacking load of photos (like 100) for macro, but I'm not entirely sure.

    I bought one a couple of years ago mainly for IBIS. I also wanted to compare with my Fuji XT2 which I have just sold and recently bought a Fuji X-S20. The IBIS on the old Olympus is better than the new Fuji. Not sure which I prefer. One thing I am still sure of is that focusing with my Nikon D700 was much better than either of the cameras I own. The D700 has long gone now though.

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm intrigued by the Fuji cameras. I have never tried one out, maybe in the future. I had the same experience as you focusing with my old D800. I'm not sure why but I really liked the manual focus on that camera. Maybe it just came down to me having used it a lot compared to the mirrorless cameras.

    I'm looking to buy my first "real" camera, upgrading from just a smartphone. I was considering this camera, but honestly idk what to look for! I want to take macro shots and normal photos of my cats, but basically just like you want to photograph landscape.
    What kind of lenses would you recommend?

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  8 місяців тому +2

      This camera would be a great choice because it strikes a nice balance between being light, food quality and not too expensive on the second hand market. And the lenses for micro four thirds are pretty light and again cheaper compared to bigger sensors. For macro, I like the 60mm macro the most. It has a magnification of 2:1! The 45mm macro is nice too. I used it to take my macro photos in my videos. But the reals pros use the 60mm macro. For everyday shots, you can't go wrong with the 12-40mm lens.

    • @sparklelikeaghost
      @sparklelikeaghost 8 місяців тому +1

      @@MyIntrovertedNature Thank you!! I ended up pulling the trigger on buying the E-M1 Mark II earlier today, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to order a 60mm lens. I would love to have the 12-40mm as well, but I can't afford both lenses. I was considering a pancake lens for my everyday shooting, what do you think of the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 EZ or Panasonic Lumix G 20mm F1.7? I like that they're compact, but I'm not sure. There's so many options!

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  8 місяців тому +1

      @@sparklelikeaghost you're welcome! I would probably get the 20mm lens, but it depends a bit of your happy with having a fixed focal length. I don't have these two lenses but I would expect the 20mm lens to perform better in low light. On the other hand, the E-m1 Mark II has got in body stabilisation, so the zoom lens should work as well.

    You can print the 20 MP files without problems, even quite large. No problem up to A2, and if you really do need more, use something like Topas Gigapixel AI. Did I mention that I have an Olympus Pen F digital? No worries regarding resolution for everyday shots, and 80 MP pixel-shift hi-res mode like the E-M1II for scanning my 4x5 negatives … 😉

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  7 місяців тому

      Wow, that sounds really encouraging! I have not used my E-M1 II for scanning digitals yet, I will have to try that soon!

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 7 місяців тому

      @@MyIntrovertedNature Scanning negatives (or slides) is a niche application, but one where the Olympus cameras are a really nice (and quite affordable) option. The light source is a problem with 4x5 negatives, not so much for smaller formats up to 6x9. The pixel-shift hi-res mode does a really good job at that, even though the "true" resolution is more like 40 to 50 MP (still more than enough to make the grain visible). BTW, your English sounds somewhat "German", or am I mistaken?

    • @MyIntrovertedNature
      @MyIntrovertedNature  7 місяців тому

      @@c.augustin Sounds great! I have the Valoi "professional scanning kit" which contains a Cinestill light source. As I only scan up to medium format (6x6cm), this works fine for me. And indeed, I grew up in Germany and, even though I speak English at home nowadays, it's so hard to lose the accent 🙂

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 7 місяців тому

      @@MyIntrovertedNature The Valoi kits are fine (don't have one, I use the Essential Film Holder, but the Valoi holders are better)! Last year I talked to the CEO of Valoi at the Photopia in Hamburg (I live up north from Hamburg), and he's a really nice guy. He gave me a tip for a suitable large light source (a specific Raleno video light), which works great. Your accent is much better than mine, and actually speaking English is a chore (writing not so much, as I can always use tools like LEO or Google Translate if I can't find the right words).

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin 7 місяців тому

      @@MyIntrovertedNature Oh, and the Olympus 3.5/30 mm macro is the perfect lens for scanning; I think I've seen this lens in one of the few videos I've seen so far from you. When using the pixel-shift hi-res mode, the aperture is automatically limited to F8 (or below, like 5.6, which I still have to test).
