I always feel bad for the big guys in these matches because they are in an awkward position where a win is not impressive and a loss is embarrassing. Oddly, I ALWAYS still cheer on the little guy!
Love your channel BTW. This big fella seemed a little lost on what to do. Maybe the bright lights got to him. Oss
Agreed, or for example when people have to compete with guys that are missing a limb
This is tournament, all bets are off. I'm using everything at my disposal and rag doll that little guy. I'm not gonna feel bad about using my size and strength like he isnt gonna feel bad about using his speed and cardio.
Big guys tend to be less technical unless they consciously work on it, most of them get higher belts due to they can easiy beat people in the gym, the moment they run into some one they cant smash , they lost
This is a perfect example of the limitations of bjj and why you should train all areas of martial arts. This video will give some people the impression that someone that small can beat someone 2-3 times his size in a fight. While it might theoretically be possible its not realistic. In an actual fight the big guy could pick the little guy up and slam him on the ground with ease. You saw how the little dude couldn't take big down and big wasn't even being aggressive. Now Imagine biggie was throwing haymakers with a foot of reach advantage. Its cool that bjj levels the playing field to some extent within bjj as a sport but its a very different ballgame in real life.
The little guy's name is Estevan Martinez. He's now a black belt and is with ZR Team in NC.
we see you down in morganton
One of my old coaches when he was in NM. Dudes a beast for sure 👌🏽
Awesome. Thanks for the update!
Was he a lil kid in this clip?
Little man had the bigger heart
A key thing the smaller guy did well, is he did not try to full mount the big dude once he got on top. He also didn’t attempt full “100 kilos” side control on him. He apparently has enough experience against bigger/stronger opponents to know that they will just bump and bench press him off. Instead, once he had a somewhat dominant position and was able to move, he just held on for the ride and went for the choke at first opportunity.
I’m also glad he did not attempt that Kimura from his back. Big guy would’ve most likely just smashed down harder and muscled out of it.
As a small grappler, it’s just as as important to learn what generally does NOT work for your game against bigger/stronger opponents.
Yeah, when I saw Estevan go to mount I was was a little worried, but he transitioned well. Big boy would've bucked him off quick.
I think the Kimura was mostly just to get a reaction, force big dude to deal with it, and give himself an opportunity to improve his position
This dude is apparently the no 1 rooster weight in the world.
Experience is the key factor, man. That, and a cool head
Everybody is bigger that's how he got experience lool
It looked like the little guy was patient and let the big guy gas out. Then he pounced when he had a chance. Awesome to watch.
Looked like he was gassed out from the beginning. No energy in him at all
I think they were on opposite brackets and the brackets were likely divided up half under a certain weight and half over that weight. Gives the lighter guy a chance. Being in shape is still part of it.
@@eclipsewrecker Probably an absolute match, after all the weight brackets are done theres an everyone in each belt open weight for a belt. Usually these finals happen way over time hence the mats being packed away in the background,
Lol, the big guy let him win. Never used his weight at all, weight is a a huge factor in jujitsu.
@@ian7033-qj9wg no way, big guy tried really hard to abuse his weight. He just didn’t full on sprint. He paced himself like you’re generally supposed to in competition
The big guy seemed to be barely there from the very beginning. He wasn't even using his weight to his advantage.
Yeah
How do you use your weight to your advantage?
@@jamesoconnor2990 Gravity.
@@jenkem4464 The fat dude has a stamina disadvantage.
Yeah, the big guys wasn't moving around or advancing much at all, I wonder if he was just tired overall.
as a small guy you learn this technique early. Play defense with the big guy constantly changing positions but never going for a hold. Make him keep moving and pushing. They will always Tire first. Key is defense and make them move constantly. Never let the big guy have a time to breathe. Once you cant breathe it's over.
great insight thanks !!
Thanks for this. I always get stuck beneath the big guys on half guard, they just settle there, and I try so hard just to flip them, while wasting tons of energy, just to fail. It's so frustrating haha, I might try this next week hopefully it will make my game better
The only "technique" that worked for this kid was sympathy. Th big guy was going so light he could have been swept by a feather.
Sometimes you can catch the big guy early though but what you say definitely holds true.
That's true but don't you think big guys don't know about this? Of course they have their own techniques which work to do their advantage.
Big guy was moving like a low level blue or white belt tbh. He needed coaching whole way.
Exactly! I thought maybe the camera color was off, but nope. That supposedly was a purple belt.
He looks winded tbh no tellin if he had rough matches before this
Big guys can get away with bad technique in the gym bc they make up for it with size so his purple belt is really more like a blue belt from a technical/ skill standpoint
McDojo purple belt..Shame his movement..3 stripe white at the most..
Agreed. Looked like a white belt to me
Kids a badass just for shooting for that first single leg!!!!
Right! And he kept attempting it relentlessly
Not sure he's a kid though
@@abdelhamid6674 Fair enough. Showing my age.
No doubt! As a 140 lb light feather weight I personally would not be shooting on a 300 pound man... and subsequently getting crushed. The fact that Estevan was able to escape from under and keep from being trapped under is a testament to his knowledge and skill!
@@reflector2032 should've went for ankle picks or snaps
No way that big guy was a legit bjj purple belt
well, let's be fair. This is a tournamemt, maybe he is super tired, or maybe he has a wrestling background and because of that he got far into jiu-jitsu without having the basic things that make jiu jitsu different from wrestling, i don't know man.
But to be more fair, i've seen on youtube video guys that are black belts but have the technique of a blue belt. I just don't get it, every blue/brown belt that i see, is damn good, but then i find some purple/black belts that are just weird
@@jestfullgremblim8002 I'm gonna guess this wasn't the big dude's first match of the day and he was already tired before this one began, but who knows. Either way I kinda feel bad for him.
Bro he still thinks the match is going. Just moves at andre the giant speed.
Even if he’s tired, he seemed to not have any idea what techniques to use at what times. I agree with special. Maybe he’s different other times, but just from this video, seems like a week one white belt
@@jestfullgremblim8002
It's probably money. Some dudes who may not deserve a certain belt but continue to shell money to their trainers, i bet a trainer sees the writing on the wall after flunking someone several times and knows if they flunk them again they'll probably give up, quit paying for classes, etc. etc.
if im honest, the big guy seemed like a pretty weak purple belt. Missed alot of opportunities, and got gassed like he never rolls.
If I’m honest they were both weak. Any descent high school wrestler could’ve beaten them both. When I train wrestlers to do JJ moves, it always comes natural to them. When I train wrestling moves to someone coming from JJ, they struggle. Learn to wrestle first.
@@pauldapilot2645 i disagree. the little guy got full mount at 5:15, for the first time he had control. within 30 seconds, he tapped the big dude, after at least one failed submission attempt, and 2 transitions. The little guy shot several times, and didnt stay down when the giant kept pressing him down. He stayed active, constantly digging for holds, and better position. the big dude came out gassed. he didnt really do anything but block a couple take downs with his girth.
@@pauldapilot2645 you think a high school wrestler would beat either of these two in a gi bjj match? I don’t believe you teach anything...
@@pauldapilot2645 dummy, it's clear as day the little guy was a wrestler with his movement.
@@pauldapilot2645 😅the lil guy is one of the best grapplers in the world at his size, multiple time adult black belt World Champion and PanAmerican champion . Also wrestled all 4 years of high school, ya dolt

Gonna need to send this to Icy Mike.
Damn, everybody watch the same videos lol
I was thinking the same thing.
😆😆. You saw that video too.
Makikomi bro... If the big guy land directly onto the little man, its over. Or maybe some Ura Nage since he got that position when he try to pin him in second chance attemp where little man try to do single leg.
@@shadymilkman443 yeah lol. You just kinda watch a few different channels if you are actually into certain things. Hard to hurt, knight JJ, Chewjitsu and some others depending on if you like to strike too lol 😂
This was so much more entertaining than some of the bigger matches I’ve been watching. Bravo 👌
ikr?
midget matches are always fun to watch
The big one was just playing with him, but respect. To both. To the small one, to enter, and to big one to play the game. Respect one more time.
Eso mismo, el grandote solo le seguía el juego, lo pero si quisiera podía hacer que el chiquito saliera volando por el aire!
Yes, this.
Copium.
I don't think so man. It's not as easy as you might think to just destroy a purple belt. That guy has spend a significant portion of his life getting smashed by bigger people in order to learn how to not let that happen. I'm also not sure why a big guy would go easy in a tournament.
😂
Total respect. The larger opponent was not aggressive at all each time he had opportunity & was over the head/back of smaller guy.
Great match. Respect to both fighters. It’s harder than it looks trying to control a a man with low size and high skill.
No kidding, they just don't hold still long enough.
They were both holders of the same belt.
I’m about 200lbs and had rolling partners that were 145 they could run circles around me they were so fast and skilled. Weight isn’t always an advantage. Oss
Much shorter people are hard too since their limbs are in very different places to what you are used to. Can lead to positions you normally get easily not being possible. In those situations I feel it's fair to use my size advantage since I'd only be in that position with a small person so it's not teaching me unrealistic technique.
that was a clean ass slide out
The smaller man showed great composure and calmness. Way to not give up or spazz out while under pressure. This is the essence of BJJ. Osssss!
That big guy is a 3 stripe white belt AT BEST! - Nice work for the lil guy
I am a 3 stripe white belt and I approve this message :D
Rank is based off the individual's potential given their age or level of athleticism. Just because he's not a very athletic guy doesn't mean he's not a purple belt.
@@mg3589 wrong

@M G 🧢
Big guy took him to lightly. I believe if he would've been more active and mean intentioned he'd have likely won. The rooster weights a strong mobile competitor with a strong will. He deserves to feel proud.
Yup the big person doesn't want to hurt him respect.
The big guy gave it to him, he could of tossed buddy on his head easily.
@@stefano7538 nah he was being cautious. you can literally hear his coach tell him "use every advantage, use your size!"" to him multiple times. I've heard similar from lots of coaches of heavyweights, myself included, who don't want to just crush someone way smaller, they want to actually outskill their smaller opponent with just technique.
I dont mean to take anything away from the roosterweight fighter though, dude had heart trying 4 takedowns on a much bigger opponent. He was also smart gassing the big guy out and was better skilled.
@@stefano7538yeah, I agree. I also think big guy could just grab smaller guy and smash him into the ground.
Using the Gi was a slick idea, I used to always try using it even to tie up arms.
Beautiful choke what a legend 🎩👌🏻
How the hell do both these guys have purple belts
Big guy defiantly isn't a purple belt. No skill. Just size and strength
I would say the smaller guy looks like a purple belt. To get technique to work on someone that much bigger and stronger (who is trained none the less) requires a lot of practice.
When you have enough green you can buy all the colors of the rainbow.
😂😂
Bingo!.. The larger guy should still a blue belt. His coach, at one point, started telling him "now's the time to use strength". When you don't have technique.. that's what the coach apparently resorts too.. lol.
The big dudes belt coming off felt symbolic considering what followed.
What art is the big guy a purple belt in , clearly not BJJ.
Tough to say that. He may have competed 4 times that day. I try not to judge but you may be right.
@@shuflbeats good point but he doesn't move well
Agreed seems like he really didn't know anything
@dick cickle he definitely has some weight he could lose. Speaking from personal experience, I am someone who did striking forms of martial arts when younger, took a break for a few years & now in BJJ, although I am one of the strong white belts, its super annoying & very inconvenient to be carrying the small belly I have while trying to move. My flexibility is on point, but being rolled up sucks because the small fat pushed inward makes it harder to breathe than if I were thin & I also cant extend my leg as high up if necessary when that small bit of belly is there too. Just those 2 inches could sometimes make all the difference in the world on a move, but that little roll gets in the way. Contrast that to my flat ab, striking days & I could kick straight up & practically kiss my knee, zero issue.
@@cbrit6206 cool story bro Love it when white belts ,especially like TKD guys, add their perspective. The BJJ community thanks you. Now go out there and triangle a D1 American -they dont know subs.
"Hulk" looked absolutely beyond exhausted and the end of a long day.
I guess if he's in the absolute maybe he had to medal in his division earlier in the day to get there. Still though yeh, guy didn't move too well.
Why is the big guy fighting like he’s a scared newbie ?
Inexperienced
@@paulcenacette3356 inexperienced purple belt.. one of these things is true, the other is not lol
the big guy was being as gentle as he could from what I saw.
Big guy probably tired from previous matches, he relied on his strength and got promoted but coach never tested endurance , hence the coach saying "now's the time to use strength".
From the packing up in the background, it’s most probably late in the day of competition. This open weight contest was most likely after both had competed in their own weight classes. Giving the smaller and more athletic guy an advantage. Being a purple belt for 5 minutes is easy, but repeating that level throughout the day gets increasingly more difficult when you are a big guy.
Is that este from abq? He's a good competitor. I've seen him sub black belts that are in excellent shape
That is Este from abq. Now Professor Este at ZR Team North Carolina. Wicked fast
I like the fact that the big guy was being coached all match long and he still lost.
What did they say? I thought the smaller purple belt was being coached.
@@1x1HealthyEnergybyAndrew I’m quite sure it was the big guy being coached.
Honestly, I always hated being coached during a match. Trying to figure out what someone is saying to you is just one more thing you have to devote brainpower to while you’re fighting for your life.
Felt like the coach would be more of a hindrance. He almost never seemed to take the advice anyway lol
The entire time I was thinking shut the F up
Big guy definitely needs some cardio.
@@jameslloyd7915 ya for sure, they can both learn. Can tell big guy just is use to folding dudes with his weight and getting away without using technique. Little guy was a real purple belt but did not setup those shots well.

Props to bigger guy for going straight technical and not throwing dude around the city
Easier said than done especially since he is going against a trained opponent. Not to mention that he would also need to be ridiculously strong to be able to rag doll his opponent. Plus slams are probably banned in this sport.
Este was my trainer for a minute - complete beast!
Never give up keep doing what you know you can do and win the battle !...
title should read "heavyweight gasses out vs more fit youngster"..
Not all heavyweights are lazy. If you are going to be big, you need to be functional like a puffy python in my opinion. I will make sure my functionality and cardio as a heavyweight will be " above to par" when I find "my home" when I start training in Jiu-jitsu.
No he got choked!
Awe man this is was dope I can't wait to show my little ones. This was very inspiring no matter how big a person is you can still win.... #GiantKiller mentality
Dont get your little guys beat up with false belief
Hulk is a black belt in eating pizza and drinking beer! 🥋🍺
The big guys team soon stopped coaching him when his back hit that Matt😂
This seems to be the absolute Gi, which is usually after Gi and no gi. And I'm not sure the big guy was really trying. He never put his weight on him. I'm not sure how the kid jumped from purple to black so fast.
Giant Slayer! He’s the Professor now at ZRTeamNC Hope Mills…Amazing guy!
I was about to say something relating the size difference with some microadjusting sneaky stuff ...
But nevermind 😒🤙🏼✌🏼
Congrats to the Smaller guy, kept moving and stayed calm even he also looked tired. Big guy looked gassed out, probably from previous matches... Awesome match.
It's quite clear that the bigger competitor didn't apply his weight, strength, or leverage on the smaller competitor. If the bigger competitor really wanted to, he could have smashed the smaller competitor very quickly and quite definitively. It took restraint for him not to smash and dominate and to focus purely on technique.
Огромное уважение большому борцу в чёрном. Он легко мог сломать маленького мальчика, но позволил ему показать свое мастерство.
I am especially fond of the winners walk off. Outstanding!
Guy is screaming instructions to a monster in the biggest offsided match that ever went down.
The LG man was being extremely gentle. He was never on the balls of his feet using his weight. He never placed his knee or elbow on a foot, arm, leg, hand, wrist, ankle, head, shoulder or neck to pass or force movement from the SM man.
Gentle or questionable technique?
The little guy got Heart & a warrior's spirit. Never give up or in.
I feel like the big guy was being gentle
I'm a pesadissimo myself and I mean no disrespect with what I am about to say.
I can see the big guy doesn't look too tired out, so I don't think that's why he's making so many technical errors. I've seen it quite often in competitions over the years (it's very prolific among white belts, but can happen to color belts as well). I think he is so used to being the biggest guy around that he didn't adapt well to a smaller guy who was strong enough to move with him.
I noticed he looked like he was just trying to just sprawl and smash instead of breaking down the turtle properly. My opinion is that he is used to using his size in the gym, maybe even his instructor is a smaller guy too? Either way, he's suffering from being the big guy all the time and doesn't move properly because he probably doesn't have to in the gym if you get what I mean.
Just a respectful opinion from a 6'1" 285lb brown belt who has been competing for a long time. It's even happened to me (thankfully I learned those lessons in the gym as opposed to tournaments though) when some of our advanced big guys left and I was the only big color belt there for several months.
Daba la impresión de que solo seguía el juego, pero que si se lo propusiera haría volar a su adversario por los aires sin mucho esfuerzo! Mucha diferencia de peso y tamaño, pero siempre es buen entrenamiento para ambos! 😊
This is what happens when you don't condition yourself to be functional when you are big. My sumo sensei used to tell me Heavyweights are lazy and they rely on technique while just laying on you with your weight. You can tell the heavyweight was getting tired. I rolled only a few times, but Jiu-jitsu is my next discipline I will do. I am a heavyweight, but functional and I am extremely comfortable on my back. Size doesn't mean anything when the skill is equal or when one has more skill. In this match, David got Goliath. Bravoooooooo.
shout outs to Icy "I'd rather give up 50 pounds in kickboxing than jiujitsu" Mike
That big guy was either completely incompetent or just so exhausted from previous matches that he could barely function. Among other things, he repeatedly failed to cross-face and whizzer when the little guy shot underneath him. And he also wasn't sagging into his hips and making the little guy carry his weight.
@@ScottLongwellR always these experts in comments
It's true though, size is much more important in BJJ than kickboxing.

1:42 this is cool and all, but right here, dude could technically just stand up and spike little dude into the floor a couple times till he was dead
@elek Technically no he couldnt. Thats against the rules in tournaments like this. In a street fight yes.
I’ve talked to bigger guys that wrestle much smaller people and they say 99 percent of the time they are more worried about injuring them then submitting them. Got me thinking
If that’s not a perfect demo of the power of jiu jitsu idk what is. Big guy looked very fatigued. Makes me wonder how many matches he had that day or if that purple was suspect. Coach sounded like a clown too.
what was the submission i couldnt see it im assuming americana
@@jameswjackson it was a lapel choke. You can see his lapel is near big dudes face and he uses it to choke him. Passes over the head to apply more pressure.
Power of jj? If you put a small golden gloves boxee in against a big know-nothing amateur then the big guy will get ktfo. This is not an example of the power of bjj but of the degradation and corruption of bjj belts.
@@antondelacruz9362 You could be right. Or you could be coming to your own conclusion with no context. We have no idea where this day started. If you’re familiar with jj competitions you’re aware that sometimes there are injuries to other competitors or just passes to the semis or finals based on less competitors in the bracket. We have no idea if this big dude had 3 matches prior and this guy went straight to semi’s or whatever. I’m just saying you’re aggressively asserting an opinion with no facts, unless of course you were there. In that case good for you. If that’s not the case, relax. That was a great chess match. Goes to show you, size has nothing on technique. Jujitsu is a great art for ground fighting and one on one. I believe a person needs stand up fighting skill as well. Especially dealing with more than one fighter.
I am flabbergasted that when the big guy sprawled on the little guy he didn't get a front headlock and end the match.
Big guy gassed out big time. I've bee there. Your mind stops working and you can't mive at all. But yes, he got that purple belt a little to fast. Should have stayed in blue a little longer. Man,,,,,,, I was all over my couch,,,,,,,,,, I haven't figgited like that in awhile,,,,,,,,,,,,, outstanding little MAN.
Reminds me of a 7th-grade gym class memory from the 1980's. One of the smallest boys, a brown-belt in karate, was wrestling one of the largest boys in our class. The larger kid was like a foot taller and probably weighed 20 or 30 pounds more than the smaller kid. I figured obviously the big kid would win and I lost interest, and stopped watching the fight. About 30 seconds later there was a loud boom, and when I looked back the smaller boy was sitting on top of the larger one, and the larger boy was pinned in a way that he basically couldn't move. I remember being quite impressed by the diminutive brown-belt.
This really is the art where the smaller person can win. Love it.
