Lot of employers actually do prefer women for this Reason + they tend to be more loyal to the company. But obviously, woman make 50% or less of the labour market, So u can't use them only. And the biggest Reason to employ a man Is that He Will not get pregnant And leave. This Is very relevant for certain professions in Wich u can't work from home. What u Said is very oversimplified.
It's because they never look at work paid per hour or the type of industry involved; they look at a mean average of salaries and say "that should be equal" - if you take a high executive of a bank as the top end and you compare it to a cleaner working at 7 hours a week and a guy working 40 hours on an oil rig as the low end; it's going to look like the men are earning more. Try comparing work per hour and pay per hour; you might find that the rate of the pay is the same but more men are willing to do more overtime, work longer hours, work weekends, etc. It's debateable if it's good or bad but it's a personal choice not an inequality.
@@rubix4195 correct and its even deeper than that. If a man works for 20 years straight as a banker and a woman works on and off for 20 years as a banker because she had children, even then the man will more likely get paid more for the same kind of job because he has simply progressed more/had longer service. but in a report, that would be considered a pay gap. the problem is the gap is due to multiple reasons not just one and cherry picking gender does not mean that the gap is because of gender only... they are too simple to understand
Work is a lifestyle choice too. The people advocating these draconian measures - while conveniently ignoring the low numbers of women in sewage work, construction and so on - never pay attention to how stressful and horrible these corporate jobs could be, or observe that though the majority of these high positions are held by men, overall these people are a tiny minority of the whole population of men.
Indeed, if you choose a family over your career you shouldn't expect to see pay increases on the same scale as much as a person (man or women) who has committed to work (staying late, doing extra tasks, going on courses etc). You can't have it all because to an employer you're an asset and you're going to reward your assets with money depending on how they deliver.

I had asked a feminist. Think how it would affect you knowing that your husband/partner is working hard and putting in the hours while your fellow women in the office puts in less at same pay and or likely to get a promotion with her life style choices? Once she realised this mentality would directly affect her and her life style choice, she understood the issue.
This woman should not be in this position. How can you justify a single data point for a "study"? Any university would have you kicked out straight away
Equality of opportunity.....very reasonable and a great target! Equality of outcome / income......impossible to implement at least in a non-communistic / socialistic country and who wants that in the first place?
I know in my office women out number men and most of the managers are women and the women that have children CHOOSE to do so knowing that they will get full pay for so many months then half pay after a given amount of months, yet they still CHOOSE to take time off to bring up the children often knowing they will lose some money. Even though men are now being allowed to share maternity leave I've still seen women still CHOOSE to take the time for themselves rather than give that time to the dad's, often it's because women CHOOSE family life as a priority over pay. It's a life choice that has been made, knowing full well that it will mean losing a certain amount of pay in the process. Why should a woman who chooses to take time off for children earn the same as a male who chooses not to have kids or take time off working 9-5 week in, week out.
We shouldn't assume that it is totally women making that choice. Couples choose together how they split up their labor. A woman's choice is only half the equation here. Not saying your assertion is wrong, but I haven't seen anything to support it. So it isn't women's lifestyle CHOICES, it is women's LIFESTYLES. But Kate was absolutely right, this is a private sphere issue and not a economic sphere issue. Forcing companies on board with this will not end well.
That blonde politician doesn't get it. 9:20 Women over 40 do not get "penalized", they make different life choices than men. If You leave the work force at 28 to raise children and come back at 38 You can expect to have less experience and therefore less pay.
Even with all variables controlled for you don't get an accurate picture of the status of women by looking only at wages, there being so many more single mothers than fathers you'd need to examine total income. It's only through support from fathers and the state that single-motherhood is financially viable, without it women wouldn't be able to work fewer hours in order to care for their children. On top of that you have disproportionate government expenditure on women generally.
Kate Andrews is wrong. I agree with her points about the wage gap but she is wrong about encouraging men to take a bigger role in child care and for women to take a smaller role. Women are natural caregivers and are designed to be focused on their child. A baby needs to be breastfeed for the first 2-3 years of their lives to be healthy. Forcing women to abandon this role hurts women and children.
I am a father of a daughter and I want the right people in the job regardless of what sex they are. I don’t want employers to pick employees based on their genitalia.
As many others have mentioned. If women are paid 10 or 18 % less or whatever it is - I'd hire only women. In reality it's about 50/50 and people are paid on skills/qualifications/experience/talent and it is illegal not to do that.
Female colleague and I, do the same job and get the same money. She goes off to raise a family for 5 years and in that 5 years Ive been promoted and have received 5 years of pay rises. She then comes back in to the work force and gets paid less. Like magic, instant pay gap!
Hmm, not sure what we could do about the "motherhood pay gap". I mean, sure it's not good to have a pay gap.. but if the mothers are raising a child and the non-mothers are working. Why shouldn't the non-mothers be paid for their work?
its not a pay gap, its an earnings gap caused by factors such as women on average not working As many hours as men, they are less likely to negotiate earnings than men and because women can go on pregnancy leave and these factors cause men to earn more overall. It isn't a pay gap because its illegal, very illegal and it would mess up companies image to risk it as well as that if it was allowed to laywoman less legally they would only hire women as a business' only concern is profit
There should be an enquiry into how this data was collated and presented. It misled a generation of women into believing the game was rigged against them when it wasn't. The real discussion should be centred around shared parental leave and child raising responsibilities because that's a big part of what's impacting on women's income after a certain age.
Every partnership entering into having a child together has a choice of who will work and who wont. That choice should be considered before attempt at conception.....not pissed and whined about after the event.
This is an example of the government caring what goes on in your own home.... and then clumsily displacing that onto companies so they can show they are doing something about the supposed issue.

How the hell can this institute get away with calling itself a charity, is has not proposed a single charitable policy since it's inception.
People should get paid based on merit and performance. It rarely happens!!! No matter if you are a woman or man, gay or straight or bisex trans, black or non black, etc.. your salary should be based on how good or bad or average you are doing. PS: been living n working in the UK since August 2000 and guess what? 9 out of 10 of my previous managers/supervisors/teamleaders etc. were women and guess what???? They ALL got paid MORE then me that I'm a gay hard working man. Unfortunately I've had some manageress that actually could not do my job as good as me even if they tried for a year but they were there because they knew the right people or slept with the right people. Sad but true. Of course lots of others were managers because they had worked hard to get there but some where there only because what I've mentioned earlier.

I don't even see why there *is* a debate. The statistics are clear that there is virtually no wage gap when all the important factors are equal (namely hours, experience, and degree). Anyone who says that there's a gap of 20-25% is just an outright liar.

I wish Kate could be Prime Minister of the UK! The gender "pay gap" is actually in WOMEN"S FAVOUR!!!
Yea, you are entitled to the same opportunities to progress in the work place, but you are not exempt from having to work the extra hours and put in the extra effort that someone else might to get the position. Almost every place I have worked that does leveled hiring within the company looks at things like overtime and peer reviews. You cannot expect to progress up in the work place if you do not put the effort in. You don't get rewarded for coming to work on time, you are expected to do so. Going above and beyond what you are rewarded for. That is where the difference can come in, there are women at my work that make more money than I do! Because some of them take more overtime than I do. It's that simple. And if you do a gender pay gap study that doesn't take those hours worked into account all of a sudden a woman is being paid more for the same job! See how misleading that can be? And worse its being done willfully. They are fully aware that if they actually look into the factors that matter and that will produce a true and fair result and the wage gap will disappear. Along with the job positions and raises companies are handing out to look more progressive. Imagine that, its almost like they have a vested interest in making it look like the are being discriminated against!
She's great. People focus on sexism in the work place but forget one very important thing. Money. If I'm a manager with two employees, I'm going to pay more to the person that makes me more money! I don't have how you want to self identify, male, female, cat, dog. If I'm a good employer I will keep encouraging the better employer with more money. It's so simple.
Do all men in a typical company get paid the same? Do all male tennis players get paid the same as Serena Williams? Do all Liverpool players get paid the same as Mo Salah? Do women who work part-time or job share, or those who work in the canteen, expect to be paid the same as the CEO?
Kate Andrews is the only voice of reason in this debate. She uses facts and data and the opposition use feelings. These people must know how ridiculous they are but they seem to believe that if they repeat a lie enough times it becomes the truth. For many, their jobs depend on keeping up the pretense. The fact that the committee is called the Women's and Equality Committee says it all. Even the name is biased.
Mothers staying home with their children, how stereotypical. Lol. She makes some good points, but it's not some social stereo type as to why women stay home, its instinct. We all need to stop denying our own nature.
We have no idea what part of our choices are instinct and what are social conventions and coercion. It is by far not that cut and dry.

They keep harping on about the wage gap, but never identify any company that does pay women less than men. Walmart? Plumbers? McDonalds? Truck drivers? Factory workers? School teachers? Postal workers? What union labour contract allows an employer to pay women less? It would take millions of women, in all sectors of the economy, being cheated by thousands of businesses and government agencies, every hour of every work day to create the wage gap these feminists are talking about. That simply is not happening. They get angry if you ask this because despite all the statistics, studies, reports and data, they still have no answers. "You don't know what you are talking about! Facts are facts. You're just a old privileged white male" as my niece said over dinner.
The GPG does exist, but in the other direction. Women make 18% more per ACTUAL WORKED hour. But ofc they do not look at ACTUAL hours, but only compare contract hours.
I like Kate Andrews, she makes excellent points robustly and eloquently. I find myself wondering if the people calling for 'equality' in the work place really mean it. Do they *really* want equality in the workplace? Remind me, when are we going to introduce 2 weeks paid maternity leave for new mothers, to match paternity leave? When will women be expected to wear shirt and trousers, whatever the weather and temperature? With closed toe shoes? No exposed legs, toes or shoulders, please. And how long are we going to have to wait for inclusion and diversity quotas to be introduced for deep sea fishing, oil rigs, scoffolders, waste collectors or construction? I don't have the numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more male workers who aren't CEOs or directors than women workers who are aren't CEOs or directors.
As a man I have a mother a sisters and nieces as well a daughter just like most other men why in the world would I want less for them show actual individual problems and they will be solved over night talk about this problems off in the dark corners of business that we can't pinpoint and it becomes a nice talking point about how men are inherently bad and unfair which does nothing but put money into these so called feminist pockets

Bet they're not complaining about gender inequality at Gallipoli, Tarawa or D day!🤔
I can't believe how much time and effort is wasted on this non-issue.
As many others have mentioned. If women are paid 10 or 18 % less or whatever it is - I'd hire only women. In reality it's about 50/50 and people are paid on skills/qualifications/experience/talent and it is illegal not to do that.
Every single point kate made is absolutely the fact .
Same old story. Idiots in power vs. people who know stuff.
The real discussion should be centred around shared parental leave and child raising responsibilities because that's a big part of what's impacting on women's income after a certain age.
the example the lady first questioned should have said the BBC that was doing badly on equal pay.
Adam Smith Institutes policy on all things as dictated by their paymasters - no problem here nothing to see move on please, all the while not tell us who pulls their strings i.e funders! There is no surprise they went less transparency in business. How the hell can this institute get away with calling itself a charity, is has not proposed a single charitable policy since it's inception.
Simple solution. Everyone put their payslips on the table and one person checks for any variances between males/females doing the same job.
The 1970 Equal Pay Act made it illegal to pay a woman a lower amount than a man doing the same job.
and elsewhere in the UK a couple more sharia courts are opened and the future of feminism looks bleak. and feminists talk about pay gap?
They are given more air time than ever before
Ability and merit are the LAST factors feminists consider.
My wife took 2 weeks off from work for motherhood. I doubt she got paid less after 2 weeks.
If only the facts would dictate the argument....!
Andrew Neil and Kelvin Mackenzie both worked for Murdoch in the newspaper industry for many years, is it just a coincidence they end up on the same show on the BBC?
Theres no such thing as the pay gap just life choices
Gee, that politician was hopeless. What a waste of taxpayer money. Kate Andrews made her look pathetic.
After motherhood? What happens to the kids after motherhood?
Feminists vision of equality: Women get the authority of men, the privileges of women, and the accountability of children.
"Women and equalities committee" .... sigh
Pinched the idea from the Middle East countries.
Kate Andrew's is a treasure of the UK. A true Brit.
Other than the obvious fact she is American, and a fucking Trump loving, right wing, evil Nazi bitch.
A real treasure. In that she should be buried in a very, very deep hole for at least a thousand years, preferably with a stake through her black, evil excuse for a heart, just to make sure she can never rise from the dead.
Kate Andrews is really really hot!
The incompetence is insane...
“Mims”
How dare she use up to date statistics to form her opinion.
ADAM SMITH. PLEASE FIX THE GLITCHES IN THE AUDIO OF MOST OF YOUR VIDEOS
Kate Andrews is bae goals.
I love Kate, I think her husband will be very lucky, but I wish it was me lol
Her prediction came true!
The GPG does exist, but in the other direction. Women make 18% more per ACTUAL WORKED hour. But ofc they do not look at ACTUAL hours, but only compare contract hours.
"Women and Equalities Committee" is a misnomer itself
You progress in a company based on competence not cup size.
Kate Andrews is spot on.
WOMEN AND EQUALITIES
Because we’re all equal, but women are MORE equal.
That horrid ginger bird who debated Jordan Peterson and needed endless notes, and headphones while he sat doodling on his notepad and still responded to evey question she asked and made her look bad with his on-point answers.
