    I’m not a man who uses the word beautiful often, and we’re only talking about a Dozer, BUT MAN O MAN with most of the parts put on it that machine is one Beautiful hunk of machinery!!! I’m not talking about the paint. Seeing you take it down to the last nut and bolt and rebuilding it is what is Awsome to me. BIG BIG Congratulations!

    Outstanding! Love the work you are doing Matt, your attention to detail and showing us all the Ooops and whoa's as you complete the work is as close to being there as anyone could hope for. Thanks so much for taking the time to bring us along on your journey, this is one of the best Cat rebuild series on the net and your calm, humorous observations as you move forward is a major part of it. As an observer, I've rarely commented, but as this series windsup, I must say that the "ride" has been good therapy for me. Your patience over matters large and smart have been remarkable and a constant lesson for me. I'm in awe of your style. This video series of rebuilding an old, worn-out tractor has a far deeper impact than merely another "how-to" on YT. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

    Matt....seriously bud, you truly are a bad a**. To think that just what 45ish videos ago you started a project that frankly looked almost impossible. You literally took it all apart and cleaned, fixed and replaced everything only to actually put it all back together and fired it up to be better than it has been since it was made. Granted, a few hiccups along the way but still.... Props to you sir. Major respect. Hell of a job. HELL of a job. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

    Thank you Matt for comprehensive filming of your journey in rebuilding the Caterpillar D4. It was of special interest to me as my father who served in WW2 in the Pacific in an airforce construction squadron returned to New Zealand and purchased a War surplus D4 and went contracting specialising in turning scrub land into farm land. Sadly he passed away in 1958 at the young age of 39 when I was only 3 years old. Once again thank you very much for taking us on this journey with you

    Very nice. I agree completely on finishing the project before starting the next. Also, folks can just wait. Simply wait for your next project to start. It's not as if it's that hard to so compared with the amount of work you put in to not just the project but making well produced videos. So I'm writing to just say thanks, and keep it up. I really like the lack of hype and drama and the absence of stupid graphics or other nonsense on the video preview page. There's so much of that on YT and it's great to not see it on your videos. Keep up the deliberate, honest, hard, well researched good work. And, thank you.

    I realise you may have already solved the blade to pump guard issue, but the bridle arm brackets are also too close to the tracks and will interfere when the blade moves side to side and also when you use the tilt function.
    I believe the only solution is to lengthen the side-arms, probably by cutting the trunnion brackets off and welding another 100mm onto the arms.
    Another great video.

    • @einfelder8262
      @einfelder8262 Рік тому +5

      Yes. Not forgetting that when there isa load against the blade it will flex in the centre and still push back against the guard, even more so when dirt falls over the back of the blade and gets coagulated in the guard plate holes. Definitely needs at least 4" more clearance.

    Not too shabby for a Hillbilly! Just a word on that shaft you fabricated: If you want some added protection from moisture try spraying the area above the seals with Fluid Film (I treated the entire inside of my Jeep frame is treated with it}. It is the best rust/corrosion preventative there is in my opinion and it's like $12 a can at most auto parts retailers and heck, you may find other areas you might want to treat. Nice work. Matt!

    Beautiful restoration of a remarkable old Cat. I had a 1949 D4-7U with ROP and a bigger blade in good working condition that I bought for excavation my homesite on acerage years ago. Not nearly as pretty as yours but a great-running dozer after I replacet what appeared to be the original engine clutch. Almost cried when the project was done and I sold it for what I paid for it. Thanks for the fond memory.

    Being as I'm a welder I could have fun with that blade. For you, don't cut the pump cover. Cut the bracing on the blade where it's touching, an inch or more so you have room to get the blade all the way up and angled. Then add a couple more on each side where you have room, you could also add a couple more horizontal if your worried about strength. I wouldn't be. Damn nice cat, wish it was mine. Keep smilin. Nothin wrong with Hillbilly.

    I would cut the ribs of the blade back. To make up for the loss of strength I would fabricate additional ribs out of 3/8" thick steel (using plasma cutter) and add them to the remaining portions of the factory rig\bs. Great work. Kind Regards, Craig

    I have a neighbor who pieced together a mid 80s D4. No pump on the front but the blade still contacted the radiator shell at full tilt/lift (obviously the wrong blade, but it otherwise fit). Just forward of the main trunnion, he cut the blade arms and sectioned in a 3" piece of solid steel, fish-plated it and got his clearance and then some. Worked fine even with the tilt leaned back to max position.

  • @richardgreen7811
    @richardgreen7811 Рік тому +8

    You may want to consider recessing the grille guard to the rear of the mounting tabs instead of on the front. This will provide lots of clearance and retain the appearance of the unit.

    Matt I’m a machinist where I worked they had a apprentice ship program for the new guys coming to the shop . In the beginning of the program they would make the guys file a 1 inch square block it had to be square and to size with in .005 thousands of an inch If they missed the size they would have to take it down to 7/8 . It gave them a good hands on experience. You showed it can be done even if you don’t have a lathe or a Bridgeport mill. Thanks for sharing your videos.

    Regarding the front guard plate. It looks like you could just flatten that angle out some, relocate the bolt hole at the top and that would give you the clearance. You could put a reverse bend at the top to realign the holes after flattening out the lower bend. I don't know how much clearance you would need. Too much and a good size rock/stone would get trapped and cause some damage. So, maybe just enough to clear when it's tilted so that a small rock getting caught won't do much but cause a dent.

    Anytime you restore/ rebuild something you have no personal history with you will run into the issues you have been having. The attribute that gets the job done is the dogged determination to complete the project. Well Done!:)

    Any way you can extend the blade arms to get clearance?? Just a thought !! Looks awesome. Did a great job bud !!!!!! 👍👍👍

      @aberdeebsky Рік тому +1

      That is a really good idea. You only need to go 1/8" or 3/16" to get enough clearence. The only thing that might be a problem is the lift cylender attachment.

      Was going to ask that about the ram arms. So I asked chatGPT:
      The length of rams on a bulldozer may be adjustable, depending on the specific bulldozer model and manufacturer. Rams, also known as hydraulic cylinders, are essential components of a bulldozer's hydraulic system that are responsible for providing the force needed to move the blade up and down.
      Some bulldozer models may have adjustable rams that can be extended or retracted to change the length of the blade stroke. However, not all bulldozers may have this feature, and it is important to consult the manufacturer's specifications or a qualified technician to determine whether this is possible for a particular model.
      In general, adjusting the length of the rams on a bulldozer requires specialized equipment and technical knowledge. It is not recommended for inexperienced individuals to attempt this on their own, as it can be dangerous and may cause damage to the bulldozer if not done correctly.
      And Bard:
      Bulldozer rams are typically not adjustable. However, there are some cases where it may be possible to lengthen a bulldozer ram by adding a sleeve to the end of the ram. This would increase the overall length of the ram and allow it to travel further. It is important to note that this is not a common practice and should only be done by a qualified technician.

      @@BrettCooper4702 the commenter said to lengthen the ‘arms’ not the rams.
      Lengthening the arms will solve a couple of issues. Notice the bridle brackets are also too close to the front of the tracks and will hit when the blade moves even slightly side to side. Also when Matt uses the tilt function, the brackets and the pump guard will hit. Lengthening the arms by about 100mm will fix any clearance problems, both to the tracks and the pump guard.

      Can you put in a1/2 inch half round bushing on the front of that push post?

    Induction hardened chrome bar is what you’ve made the new shaft with it looks like. Good stuff. And yes only a small outer layer is hardened

    Could you try wrapping some rope packing around that actuator shaft, over the installed seal, after it's all installed to provide some weather protection.

    I would alter the guard before I alter the blade. See if you can just drill new holes to move the guard back, I wouldn’t cut channels if you have to cut it. Would be better to cut a large single piece out and recess it, shaping it around the pump more. Also I would think that when pushing with the blade it will flex back a few millimeters so you really need some space there.

    You're doing great don't worry about the excavator till this is done. I would agree with you trim the blade gusset and not the grill.

    Just my contribution: I would cut the ribs on the back of the blade. I would cut them back by about 3/4" or more and then add a couple more ribs to counter the loss of rib strength. Great job on the restoration! You are far more meticulous than I would have been.

    My grandfather had a D4 when I was a kid did a heap of work with it on tin mines. Brings back great memories. To get a bit of clearance for the blade you could weld in a couple of inches blocks to the push arms probably wouldn't change the geometry of the lift too much.

    Trim the blade ribbing . Don't cut your front guard. Been watching your hard work all this time man. What a great job you been doing.
