- My Surface Pro 4 is nearing its limits in 2020 after 4.5 years of usage. I have been using it for architectural design, and pen & touch was very useful. Now I am on the hunt for the replacement of this laptop. Here are my thoughts and what happened. If you own any version of Surface Pro or considering one, you might want to hear this out!

I had the same bulging battery issue. Paid $31 from ebay, and replaced the battery. Works great now!
Awesome! I failed replacing mine!
@@JosephKim I bought my SP4 in May 2017 and so I'm now fast approaching your same timeline.
I have noticed that it gets uncomfortably hot. Recently, my screen has started shaking... as if there's water on the inside somehow. Anyone else? All the videos I have seen say that I'll need to put alcohol on the perimeter of the glass to remove the screen in order to fix the problem. Idk if I have the energy for that....
Same only 95€ for me
And also, I didn't expect that its a smartphone configuration in terms of disassembling it. I always thought that it had screws or sth underneath the hinges. So it's a hard device to repair
@@JosephKim what did you do? it might still be fixable
Great explanation of tablet workflow! Very cool that you showed the bubbling images.
Thank you. :)
I dropped mine a year ago and it cracked on the corner but i"m still using it today! I love the display and the crack is mostly noticeable on the bezel.
That's nice!
@@JosephKim what did you end up upgrading to? I'm thinking about upgrading until windows 10 is no longer supported since I cannot update to windows 11.
I currently use XPS 13 2in1
I gave up on the SP4 in 2019 after my third unit (yes, i replaced it twice) eventually suffered from screen flicker/shake problem just like the rest. This is so apparently a hardware design flaw for the GPU-screen mechanism. It has been relegated to a back-corner short-term video player while I do my heavy work with a Lenovo ThinkPad.
I wonder if the recent versions don't suffer the same problem.
On my 3rd as well. Ssd 1st one, flicker 2nd one. Both shelf queens. Put in max batt life mode for 3rd one and 3 years good so far. Remove power when not in use.
Use an S8+ now but still use pro 4 for virtual mach running windows 7.
4 years is not bad. Laptops usually last 3-4 years with heavy use.
One of main problems for laptop is cooling and any additional insulation makes things worse, which includes anti-scratch cover on the back and even the screen protector. Cases and bags are insulating too if the devices is on. Aluminum back on tablet is designed to dissipate heat and we put tablet in the case negating the design. Apple iPads somehow can survive it perhaps because of weaker processor (iOS does not require power, but Intel core does). Quality of batteries might play a role.
With careful use, device may last 9-10 years even with original battery. I have original iPad and Surface Pro 1 - both work with original battery. I met users with 20 years old Apple laptops, but did not ask if battery was original.
That's true that the metal bodies are meant for better dealing with heat. But the Surface turning on its own inside the bag really did not help.
Perhaps I push laptops a bit too hard at times due to the tasks that I typically do. But performance wasn't the biggest issue. If the Microsoft was able to service the device to replace the battery, this device would be seen longer life.
I've been getting alot of screen issues like flickering, distorted effects or ghosting effects there's even one time where the laptop or screen just completely freezes yet am still able to move mouse or hear some sounds whenever I watch movies or listen music, keyboard is also broken some keys no longer works been using it for about 1 year, I might buy a new laptop (not a surface pro btw). Wish that Microsoft put more effort when it comes to it's cooling system.
Yeah. And perhaps making a repairable device.
I also have the SP4 since Sep2016. It still works, but the battery expanded SO MUCH that all of the left part of the screen got detached from the adhesive, and the screen itself bulged like CRAZY. I’ve ordered a 3rd party replacement battery from EBAY, and soon I will attempt to replace the battery in a long&excruciating process. In the meanwhile I started to use the iPad pro 12.9 2020 with the Magic Keyboard and Pencil gen 2, and it is just a magnificent device.
Unfortunately, I have failed replacing the battery. I ended up cracking the screen. Idk what to do with anymore :P and iPad by its nature, won't be suitable for me.
Joseph Kim
Umm... maybe you can still replace the battery, and use it as a desktop PC connected to external monitor?
I really hope I would manage to replace the battery without any misfortunes. You should see the current condition of the screen, it bulged something like 1-2 cm out from the center. You can also see the fan from the open gap on the left and the expanded battery as well. The screen actually detached from the lower left part till the left speaker. It’s a mess...
I also wonder if the screen won’t crack, if it will remain disfigured from the bulging or it will return to the original flat state.
@@NirIAF I think you have much better luck than I do, as the battery already has done the half of the job :)
Yeah, I can probably use it with an external monitor, but I have no use for it. I think I am going to have to sell for parts.
Sad, as my screen and body were in immaculate condition.

My first SP4 was replaced by MS after 2 years for the battery bulge. Second is now doing the same. I will probably get a Dell or Lenovo replacement, as I would prefer to stick use USB-C/Thunderbolt docks over the SP unti (which I have).
mine did the same. But it was my fault for letting it get too hot since I was using it as a 3rd monitor
Subscribed. Please do the repair video on your SP4. At some point in time I’m going to need to do the same repair! My screen hasn’t started lifting yet, but the SP4 is notorious for battery and display issues. Thank You!
Unfortunately, I ended up cracking the screen. I knew the risks, but I was really sad :/ It still is repairable. But another 100 or more on top is probably not worth it.
@@JosephKim
It just need a new glass screen and battery and it will be running as new. The tip is, if you open it, mind as well get the following:
1. CPU thermal paste
2. Consider upgrading a bigger ssd. 1tb.
3. Clean the fan.
4. Double side cell phone tape or just some generic, put a little bit reason is you do not want to have the pry open experience. This will leave you a more accessible option when u have you have to get into it again.
One more thing, if you are going to get a new screen. Make sure you get the sp5 screen which is a lg display and get the sp4 to lg cable to make the screen work. This is due to the possibility of to flickergate issue with sp4.
Just out of curiosity. Did the SP4 still run windows 10 and apps OK? Even after years? Or was it getting bogged down due to hardware?
I mean, I wasn't fast, but it ran it.
I had same issue with my surface pro 4 as well...my screen had fully come out...I too brought in Dec 2015 from 5th Avenue from their flagship store...I live in Bombay India....it was not worth sending on replacement...so I brought a new battery and replaced it myself seeing videos on UA-cam..u too can change the battery..my old battery was fully dead...so I had no fear removing the battery...
Nice!
I'm still using my SP4 til this day. Experienced the bulging battery issue - to which you can just replace - with the help of a repairman. The screen flickering issue also crops up every now and then, but with some understanding of how to use the device without over-stressing it, the Surface Pro 4 is still very reliable in 2021.
Nice. Good for you!
I just got a very slightly used surface i7 6th gen model, 16/512 model for about 600$ ish and I feel like it was a better purchase that those horrible laptops at this price point in my country...

@@AndrewWang07 but what do you do about the screen flicker issue
@@makisekurisu4674 TBH, it self-resolved. Try giving your device some rest time. Otherwise, it'll just need a screen replacement.
I'm a little late to the party, but what did you end up doing your SP4? I'm looking for reuse ideas for mine!
I replaced the battery with MS and sold it to local person for lesser price than replacement XD
I have a surface pro 4, similar situation but i also have some cracks on the glass. Im very interested to know how did your battery substitution attempt was. Even if you were not sucessful. I subscribe you for that video! :) please keep us updated~
Right now i am very undecided whether to pay those 550$ or just invest on an ipad pro...
But you kinda sold me on the laptop that does tablety stuff.... Would the 550 be worth it? I use a 16 gb , i7 core, with 256 storage... They say it is replaced with a new one. Hmmm
@@nuria.sakurahi, thanks for the comment. I tried replacing the battery myself, and ended up cracking the screen. So, it was unsuccessful 😭. Even if it is i7, it is an old CPU. It has gotten a lot better these days. I don't think it will worth 550. But that's up to your thoughts :)
Hi Joseph,
I am looking for laptop and need your recommendation. There are several that come to my consideration, Surface Pro 7 (i7), Dell XPS 13 2in1, Lenovo Yoga C940 14", HP Elite dragonfly. In terms of design, utility and durability, which do you think should be in the first to the fourth option? I will probably use it a lot for note taking with its pen.
Whilst I stuck with XPS, I have no personal experience with Elite Dragonfly or Lenovo. So, I can't really speak for it.
@@JosephKim So between SP and XPS, which one has satisfied you more?
@@saintary5180 it's hard to say I like them both :P SP4 was great at its time. XPS is much more sophisticated now.
Hi JK
A tab with a pen is very much a help for any architect or designer for creating content and presentation, and I think that is why the surface and ipad had a niche in the market till now.
But with the new Samsung range of tablets with s pen, I am personally confused that whether they are good enough justified to be used by designers and architects or not.
PS I have a good enough configuration desktop with i7 7700k with rtx 2060 that is used as the main workstation.
And I am confused to choose between Samsung s6 lite or to go for a laptop. When mostly the portable device is just going to be used for presentations, editing word and excel files and sketching and marking pdfs etc for on site visits.
Could you please suggest with an in depth analysis for such situation. Where I am more inclined towards the form factor of a tablet with pen.
Phewwww... That was a long text
I've had bad experience with Samsung laptop in the early days and I wasn't sure if it would be a good choice. It was a bit too early to tell. I'd be up for trying one, but never know when. :P
Thanks 😊
After watching your comprehensive review I'm confused wether I should buy a surface pro 4 or a lenovo x250. I'm getting a really cheap deal for a surface pro 4 the only problem is the touch doesn't work so I was hoping I could buy that. What do you prefer?
Without touch, SP4 would be useless for me :)
See if you can buy the Surface Pro 5 instead. Many of the issues with the Surface line were resolved from the Surface Pro 5 (2017) onwards.
I don't really sign in to Google but for this one it is worth it. My sp4 has the left side of the screen lift up in the center. I too love the machine. In my case I am not sure if it is the battery or heat. I considered fixing it or going with the sp7. I might just go with another company. I was looking at the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA
. I also subscribe to your channel. Have you bought something else yet?
I ended up buying XPS 13 2in1. Been loving it so far.
I just bought one and aware of the issues with sp4. Street price is about $350 with no signs of issues. You probably spend min of $200 on a new battery and glass screen.
Battery bulging, screen flicker yet?
Hello, thank you for sharing !
Dou you know if you can use the USB-C to Surface connector to link your SP4 to an universal docking station ? (HP Dock G5 for example)
A good question, I don't think so. The USB-C is power only. No data. Which is kinda sad.
@@JosephKim Oh, that's unfortunate. I'll have to buy the Surface dock .. 😖
And that's really expensive too!

Hi everyone. I was wondering if someone could please help me solve the flickering screen of my surface Pro 4, I7 16G RAM computer. Lately, my computer screen starts flickering within 10 min of start. Recently, I deleted the Intel (R) Iris (R) Graphics ( under the Display adapters) and upgraded as suggested under MS problem solving tools but did not resolve the problem. I will highly appreciate your inputs/suggestions to resolve my compter flickering screen. Thank you very much
Because of its age, I think it may be hardware issue such as your screen, motherboard or even CPU issue. That will need to be 'repaired' rather than driver fix.
Flickergate! That’s no good.
Thanks for the video. Very interesting: I have had my Surface Pro 3 for over 5 years and I still get around 4 hours battery life.
Nice! That's impressive.
(Translated) Perhaps you are right. Microsoft rep did tell me that Surface Pro 4 model in general had battery issues. They even have a separate program for the ones that had this problem within 3 years.

I have two of these, valued at $300 each and the warranty is dead on both of them. I just spend $200 replacing the SSD, battery and screen on one of them. The bloating occurrs due to a swollen battery. It was rather easy to fix, and Microsoft wanted me to but a new tablet, of course they did.
