I recently sold my Surface Pro 4 to a family member who needed a budget windows laptop super quick, so I’m using something else now(and it’s still working great for them). But not a week goes by where I don’t miss it a bit.
My old high school had given us all Surface Pro 5's to use for the school year, but at the end of the year they let all us seniors purchase the tablet, pen and keyboard for only $100. Sweet deal.
I’ve found that as long as you take care of your stuff it tends to lay very well. Especially tech these days. Processors age soooo much better than they used to.
I've been using a hand-me-down, it's still a great tablet/computer and it's incredibly portable. My only problem is the battery life, but even then I usually have it plugged in.

I have Surface Pro 4 since december 2019. I overpayed a little, because i payed 600$ but it came with extended 1 year warranty when i bought it. I love this device. When it comes to portability and nice screen Pro 4 beats everything. I have an i5 model with 8 GB of ram and 256 GB of storage. I definitely recommend it to everyone who looks for a nice and portable tablet/laptop. ;)
Same Story here, I sold my MacBook Pro M1 three weeks ago so I could travel from Germany to the US and have my music production and run myndsily business on a single device. I love it I am watching UA-cam on the Surface Pro 5 now and it will replace the iPad too! Best decision ever. I am now a huge Microsoft fan. This Tablet is insane! Mine is i5 8GB RAM and functiins better than the M1 Pro.. Great video btw 👌

Just picked up a i5 / 8GB / 256GB model on eBay for $80 . The Gen3x2 m.2 hurts, but it handles all my daily work tasks and video playback with no issues. Had to score a pen ($30) and charger ($26) separately and I still haven't decided on a Type cover but so far I am more than happy with this unit in 2022.
Nice one! I've got one since 2016. Still great! My battery is according to the report still 91%. Which is amazing! I've used it a lot, I still love the writing and touch capabilities of it. If the battery ever decides to die, I'll replace it anyway!
Using the Surface Pro 4 to watch this video :) Just some light modifications to the power management to get it working with the ifixit battery. Worth the 3 hours of work on it!

ClipPlayTV i replaced the ssd in my sp4. I dropped the screen accidentally (yeah go figure I didn't break it while opening) when I got my replacement from Ali express it started doing flickergate behavior. And weird freezing. If I remember correctly it's just the display controller inside overheating and getting damaged
rayproductions backup channel you can replace it with the Surface Pro 5 1796 LG display and it’ll solve your flickergate issue permanently. Keep in mind you will need to replace the display cable as well. At the end of the day its worth it. If you need links lmk.
I wouldn't see anything wrong with using a SP4 in 2020 as I wouldn't see a big deal using the SP3 in 2020. We get so carried away about what are needs should be and forget we're basically satisfying our lust instead. Yes, I did get a SB2 and love it to death even after over 2 years of use. I still have my SP3 (sold the SP4) and the SP3 is still a darn good product even today! By the way...the SB2 was definitely a lust buy! :D
I still have a Surface pro 4 still working today. I used the surface pro 4 to get me through callege. Its one of the longest computers I owned. My GF made it her computer after I upgraded to a new Surface last year but she loves it and won't let me get rid of it lol.

@@aimansadaf2427 Yes it did. I would have to turn it off and wait 30min and it would go back to normal. When I upgraded to a new Surface I never had the flickering problem again and the flickering problem is one of the reasons I upgraded. I believe the Pro 4 is the only one that has the flickering problem. My gf still uses the Pro 4 and doesn't do anything heavy to make the processor get hot so it never really flickers for her.

I bought a sp4 last year and it cost me around 550 usd including pen, typecover and case. I got the i5 with 256gb storage and 8g of ram. It was almost brand new, having been used once only. Lately i've been having the screen flicker problem and I really think it is common to all sp4 but the intensity varies from devices to devices and you also won't notice it unless you use the device for hours in a row. Mine only starts to flicker after an extended period of usage without long breaks (around 7 hours) was it still worth it? Absolutely because apart from that this hybrid is an amazing machine and performs really well just be aware that risks are high and if you plan on using your device non stop for a long time you might see some issues. That is why i would recommend to go for sp5 instead to still get a good price and without worrying about that problem that can occure anytime
I am disappointed with the Surface Pro 4. The battery cycle is still good but the battery swelled up just recently. I went on the web to do some research and found out that the Surface Pro 4 had a high rate of fail because of poor design. There was not enough heat dissipation. I enjoyed it when it was working fine but I started to see some screen burn it. They said those were early signs of too much heat affecting the hardware. I think your screen flicker might be part of the heating issues as well. Before the battery swelled up the fan was running intensely even while just watching youtube videos.
I still use mine for recording audio, while recording the HD video using the front facing camera. All of my videos were done this way, sometimes using a Sony HD camera and micro SD. The SP4 has better camera quality so it gets more use. The audio comes in on two USB-A ports with RME Fireface audio interfaces. An external Samsung SSD handles most of the softsynths. There’s a MIDI interface for Fishman Tripleplay guitar synth, and Premiere Pro renders most of the video. Recently I’ve moved to Resolve and that has made me want a new SP8. Otherwise the SP4 jams! I7 8 256.
Hey man, Like your editing style and you're right checking charge cycles. The SP4 is a great form factor and is so versatile, I have fallen in love with it too. A warrantee for flickergate is a must, as you say. I have been through 2 faulty SP4s, and the warrantee saved me. But now that warrantee is coming to an end, I used store credit and some extra cash to get a SP 2017. I wouldn't recommend an SP4 to anyone, but I am glad that you have had a good experience 😊

Just purchased a Surface Pro 4, i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SDD, 57 battery cycles, incl. Surface type cover, Surface pen, Surface docking station, clear PanzerGlass screen protector, sleeves for Surface and charging cable. Very little used and no scratches. All for 450€.
Thought I'd have a look around for another Windows device, after purchasing a Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop (Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) back in 2014. It had Windows 8.1, but upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, and still works very well. At the time I paid about A$1,000.00 for it new (looking mainly at 'specs per buck'). After purchasing a Samsung Tab 2 10.1 (3G cellular) and its internal memory (solid state) of 16GB, thought I'd find something SSD for the Windows OS. Just last month, I went to an auction which had several of the Surface Pro 4, with most carrying your recommended specs of 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i5. The type cover was included and the purchase at the hammer was A$380.00, with a buyers' premium of 15% bringing it to A$427.00. I had not yet watched your presentation, but I see someone was quite happy with their purchase all of 7 months ago.. Great value in 2021 as well..
I just got one of these for $200. Came with the MS Typecover, surface pen 2, and a minidisplay adapter + usb hub. Battery cycles only at 90. It was the edition with the i56100u, 8GB Ram, and 256GB SSD. I feel like I got a freakin' steal.

Do it. One of my friends from HS was looking for a good college laptop and I recommended one to him. He got a crazy deal on one and absolutely loves his.
I also bought SP4 2020. There are many problems with SP4. One of them has a terrible flicker problem. So I replaced the screen. The thought of buying the sp4 was because I was able to replace the SSD. For reference, I bought a 1TB SSD, but in the end, I only changed the screen without replacing the SSD. I never had to use 1TB in SP4. Another problem is noise. The fan starts making noise just by opening and using the Chrome browser. Eventually, I couldn't stand this and bought the sp6 again this year. Fanless is one of the good reasons to consider. In this case, you need to buy SP5 or SP6.

I had a core m3 4gb in late 2019. Worked nicely but 8gb definitely minimum. Now i did the same and bought a i5 4gb surface pro 3 for 100 bucks. Slap on a 100 bucks replacement screen and i can resell it for 50 to 100 profit if i really want to

I have had my surface pro 4 m3 for 3 years now and its still going relatively well. only issues I have had so far is some heat and short battery life. currently having some issues with the typecover. i use it for word processing , drawing and 3d cad including rendering and it works surprisingly well about 80 % of the time. im definitely looking to upgrade but if someone is looking for one id still recommend getting something with more ram.
How about battery for video playing? I will often use it do watch downloaded video lessons for uni and am wondering how many hours it would last me watching them and taking some notes.
I had the flicker gate...MSFT replaced it with a refurbished unit even though I was 2 years out of the warranty period. Replaced in Sep-2019. I bought mine in Dec 2016
lol, i have the m3 config. I got it when i was 8 and it still holds up 5 years later. It is amazing. It can play roblox at low graphical settings, and it gets the job done. I used to always take pictures with it as well.

That 1TB SSD is definitely nice! The i7 models tend to be a bit better taken care of as well. Although if you want to prioritize the i7 and 16GB of ram for a better price, just find one with lower storage like mine, you can always just add more with a microSD later like I did.
I’ve had one since 2016 and they are a nice piece of kit. But you have to mentally factor in that there is a good chance that the battery will swell and damage the screen, probably out of warranty. Both can be replaced but will cost you. Google this problem if you are planning on buying.
I just picked up a perfectly restored one for $130. i5, 4GB, 128GB. Couldn't ask for anything better. Quality product, 1080p display.. It'll be perfect for me. I'll be using it to teach myself animation, I'll prob be exporting and doing my projects in 480p, so that shouldn't be an issue lmao.

At this point a few years down the road with the way the market is I would seriously eyeball a surface pro five or six, but if you can get a great deal on a surface pro four definitely go for it! The main reason I say this is just because the price Delta between the three on the used market tends to be very close now
I bought my surface pro 4 new, in 2017 for over £1000. to create my digital illustrations. Since then the following happened: • I had it replaced due to battery-not-charging issue • I had it replaced again due to not waking anymore • the type-cover stopped working almost a year ago • now the stylus is not being recognised at all anymore (near the deadline of a massive project in my career) in every case, the problem seemed to actually derive from the drivers and each issue appeared after a Windows Update... Not Happy at all!
I think you just sold me on this, you got no idea how many videos i tried to find with someone using this laptop this year! Got offered a i7 16GB of RAM 256GB for $670 with 2 keyboards and the pen. For a bit i considered the high spec Surface Go 2 ($878 with keyboard) or a Surface pro 7 mid spec i5 for the $670. Just $5 less of the pro 4. Also ditching my 2017 MacBook Air low spec for this. What do you think?
Was just given one of these. Worked perfect except the battery was 8 months pregnant and pushing the screen out. took it all apart and ordered a battery for 35USD on Amazon. It's a major PITA to remove the battery as it's all glued in.
In case anyone cares, I used lots of heat to extricate the screen and battery and I don't think anything was damaged during all this. Its a good gamble at 35USD if I can get it all back together without breaking it :)
@@speedy1through943 as an after post, I got it all back together and figured out 1. I had cracked the screen very slightly, but it cut half the screen off. And 2. The battery always said 0% even though it would charge and the pc stayed on with the power unplugged. Sent the battery back and put the surface in the parts bin…
@@t4thfavor1212 I'm sorry to hear that and the batteries on Amazon are total trash and I would recommend the battery from Ifix it they work wonders and same with the screen because if it's not the exact match the screen won't turn on but you can hook it up with the mini displayport and get display out of it

Needed temporary access to a portable device to run an .exe file to modify my car. I bought this for £60 from eBay - i5. Absolute bargain. Now lives on the back seat for films on long trips.
When I'm using my surface pro 4 which I got in 2016 under the AC, the flickering problem doesn't happen, but when using it at normal room temperature the problem happens after 2 hours (and maybe faster if using it for editing or 3d modeling)
My Surface Pro 4 just died, no boot, evidently a chip failure from web results. The pen stopped working a while ago. Both sourced mid-2017, daily use for ~2-3 hrs a day.

Hmmm… honestly, I’d go for the 3 In that case! The processors are pretty close in performance between the two, so that little bit of extra boost from the i7 would be pretty nice.
Soon I’ll get to look at a Surface Pro 4 from a coworker that they barely used (Apple people). They said they were talked up a processor, but not what processor they ended up getting. Would even an i5 be worth picking up?

I bought the SP4 i5/8/256 version on launch day. I hated it from day one and barely used it. I hate that I cant have it in my lap and work. I tried the Brydge keyboard and cracked the display. So after replacing that, I barely touched it until two weeks ago when I installed all my vehicle diagnostic software on it and started using it as a workshop tablet.
watch out for that infamous blue/red lines towards the bottom of the screen, it plagues pro 4 models. mine appeared out of nowhere after a windows update back in the days, would appear after some time of use, then whole screen would shake up and down and make it unusable. Had to use their customer service, their service is top notch tho, but I was still in that recall window period. Hopefully urs is fixed already
Good idea! But better buy the surface pro or pro 6. They cost just a little more if not the same and are better in many ways: newer, faster, no risk of a flickering screen, might come with warrenty, less battery wear. My surface pro4 started to occasionally flickering after 4,5 years. You never know with the pro 4.

Are u using that to edit this and other videos still? I bought one when it was like a year old just b4 SP5 came out. (Always feel like I messed up. Shoulda got the IPad Pro as at the time they were the same price) I honestly never use it. Was thinking about selling or trading. Where do I find that battery cycles info? Guess I could try googling it. Sounds like I should try selling it to college kids or is the 2 year difference now to far? It is pretty old now.

BTW flicker gate is display dependant. You CAN get flicker gate on your device after replacing the screen

I bought a sp4 last year and it cost me around 550 usd including pen, typecover and case. I got the i5 with 256gb storage and 8g of ram. It was almost brand new, having been used once only. Lately i've been having the screen flicker problem and I really think it is common to all sp4 but the intensity varies from devices to devices and you also won't notice it unless you use the device for hours in a row. Mine only starts to flicker after an extended period of usage without long breaks (around 7 hours) was it still worth it? Absolutely because apart from that this hybrid is an amazing machine and performs really well just be aware that risks are high and if you plan on using your device non stop for a long time you might see some issues. That is why i would recommend to go for sp5 instead to still get a good price and without worrying about that problem that can occure anytime

I am disappointed with the Surface Pro 4. The battery cycle is still good but the battery swelled up just recently. I went on the web to do some research and found out that the Surface Pro 4 had a high rate of fail because of poor design. There was not enough heat dissipation. I enjoyed it when it was working fine but I started to see some screen burn it. They said those were early signs of too much heat affecting the hardware. I think your screen flicker might be part of the heating issues as well. Before the battery swelled up the fan was running intensely even while just watching youtube videos.
I still use mine for recording audio, while recording the HD video using the front facing camera. All of my videos were done this way, sometimes using a Sony HD camera and micro SD. The SP4 has better camera quality so it gets more use. The audio comes in on two USB-A ports with RME Fireface audio interfaces. An external Samsung SSD handles most of the softsynths. There’s a MIDI interface for Fishman Tripleplay guitar synth, and Premiere Pro renders most of the video. Recently I’ve moved to Resolve and that has made me want a new SP8. Otherwise the SP4 jams! I7 8 256.

Like your editing style and you're right checking charge cycles. The SP4 is a great form factor and is so versatile, I have fallen in love with it too.
A warrantee for flickergate is a must, as you say. I have been through 2 faulty SP4s, and the warrantee saved me. But now that warrantee is coming to an end, I used store credit and some extra cash to get a SP 2017. I wouldn't recommend an SP4 to anyone, but I am glad that you have had a good experience 😊
It's 2022 and I am thinking of getting this instead of the surface pro 7 🤔

Well, I have had the i5 4 gb ram 128 gb pro 4 since it came out and I have had no issues whatsoever. It only got better with time.
I use mine mainly for drawing and about 6 months back the pen was slightly off, and i cant fix it

Just purchased a Surface Pro 4, i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SDD, 57 battery cycles, incl. Surface type cover, Surface pen, Surface docking station, clear PanzerGlass screen protector, sleeves for Surface and charging cable. Very little used and no scratches. All for 450€.
Thought I'd have a look around for another Windows device, after purchasing a Dell Inspiron 3542 laptop (Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) back in 2014. It had Windows 8.1, but upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, and still works very well. At the time I paid about A$1,000.00 for it new (looking mainly at 'specs per buck'). After purchasing a Samsung Tab 2 10.1 (3G cellular) and its internal memory (solid state) of 16GB, thought I'd find something SSD for the Windows OS.
Just last month, I went to an auction which had several of the Surface Pro 4, with most carrying your recommended specs of 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM, Intel Core i5. The type cover was included and the purchase at the hammer was A$380.00, with a buyers' premium of 15% bringing it to A$427.00. I had not yet watched your presentation, but I see someone was quite happy with their purchase all of 7 months ago.. Great value in 2021 as well..

I just got one of these for $200. Came with the MS Typecover, surface pen 2, and a minidisplay adapter + usb hub. Battery cycles only at 90. It was the edition with the i56100u, 8GB Ram, and 256GB SSD.
I feel like I got a freakin' steal.

@@LeftyPencil I have actually. It sometimes leaves little gaps when I'm writing, but I think buying a new one would fix it. I don't use the pen very often, so it hasn't been a huge deal to me.

Do it. One of my friends from HS was looking for a good college laptop and I recommended one to him. He got a crazy deal on one and absolutely loves his.
I also bought SP4 2020. There are many problems with SP4. One of them has a terrible flicker problem.
So I replaced the screen. The thought of buying the sp4 was because I was able to replace the SSD. For reference, I bought a 1TB SSD, but in the end, I only changed the screen without replacing the SSD.
I never had to use 1TB in SP4.
Another problem is noise. The fan starts making noise just by opening and using the Chrome browser.
Eventually, I couldn't stand this and bought the sp6 again this year.
Fanless is one of the good reasons to consider. In this case, you need to buy SP5 or SP6.

Bought a used SP5 that had a faint crack in the screen. Fantastic device and wayyyyy better than budget laptops at it's price point.

So, I've got surface pro 4 (8gb ram and 256gb of ssd) with keyboard but without the pen for 420$ (it's used model) and the screen is glitching, idk why, and i bought it just for drawing, and then I've got this idea: should I buy new samsung tab s6 lite for 350$ or should I buy a surface pen for 120$, again, I BOUGHT THIS JUST FOR DRAWING, sometimes i go in like instagram or discord, but that's it. I can't sleep well knowing that i don't have s single working samsung product in my house, i just love samsung that's why I would switch
I had a core m3 4gb in late 2019. Worked nicely but 8gb definitely minimum. Now i did the same and bought a i5 4gb surface pro 3 for 100 bucks. Slap on a 100 bucks replacement screen and i can resell it for 50 to 100 profit if i really want to

ClipPlayTV you can upgrade your sp4 BTW. Buy a surface pen. The new pen features less latency. More levels ect and it works on sp3 and up

I have had my surface pro 4 m3 for 3 years now and its still going relatively well. only issues I have had so far is some heat and short battery life. currently having some issues with the typecover. i use it for word processing , drawing and 3d cad including rendering and it works surprisingly well about 80 % of the time. im definitely looking to upgrade but if someone is looking for one id still recommend getting something with more ram.

How about battery for video playing? I will often use it do watch downloaded video lessons for uni and am wondering how many hours it would last me watching them and taking some notes.
I had the flicker gate...MSFT replaced it with a refurbished unit even though I was 2 years out of the warranty period. Replaced in Sep-2019. I bought mine in Dec 2016
lol, i have the m3 config. I got it when i was 8 and it still holds up 5 years later. It is amazing. It can play roblox at low graphical settings, and it gets the job done. I used to always take pictures with it as well.
Just bought one for 50$ in 2024 as a travel laptop. its amazing even today. especially for 50$ :)
Don't be surprised when your screen starts flickering to the point where you will have to RMA it.

That 1TB SSD is definitely nice! The i7 models tend to be a bit better taken care of as well. Although if you want to prioritize the i7 and 16GB of ram for a better price, just find one with lower storage like mine, you can always just add more with a microSD later like I did.
I’ve had one since 2016 and they are a nice piece of kit. But you have to mentally factor in that there is a good chance that the battery will swell and damage the screen, probably out of warranty. Both can be replaced but will cost you. Google this problem if you are planning on buying.
I just picked up a perfectly restored one for $130. i5, 4GB, 128GB. Couldn't ask for anything better. Quality product, 1080p display.. It'll be perfect for me. I'll be using it to teach myself animation, I'll prob be exporting and doing my projects in 480p, so that shouldn't be an issue lmao.

Although I think I got a longer battery cycle since the previous owner told me that the battery life is 2-4 hours depending on usage. Currently thinking about retiring my launch SP4 (battery is going, which I'll eventually replace) with either a Book 3 (the HEFT), or another SP7. I did purchase the Alcantera keypad, which can still be used with the future models!
Not until you find out the screen flickers problem. Happened to every single SF4 devices, main issue is the battery overheat.
Had mine 7 years and no screen flicker, guess I'll continue to wait and use it until it happens...

At this point a few years down the road with the way the market is I would seriously eyeball a surface pro five or six, but if you can get a great deal on a surface pro four definitely go for it! The main reason I say this is just because the price Delta between the three on the used market tends to be very close now

I bought my surface pro 4 new, in 2017 for over £1000. to create my digital illustrations. Since then the following happened:
• I had it replaced due to battery-not-charging issue
• I had it replaced again due to not waking anymore
• the type-cover stopped working almost a year ago
• now the stylus is not being recognised at all anymore (near the deadline of a massive project in my career)
in every case, the problem seemed to actually derive from the drivers and each issue appeared after a Windows Update... Not Happy at all!
And 5 minutes after writing the comment above I've got a blue screen. Honestly... it's like I'm being watched

I think you just sold me on this, you got no idea how many videos i tried to find with someone using this laptop this year! Got offered a i7 16GB of RAM 256GB for $670 with 2 keyboards and the pen. For a bit i considered the high spec Surface Go 2 ($878 with keyboard) or a Surface pro 7 mid spec i5 for the $670. Just $5 less of the pro 4. Also ditching my 2017 MacBook Air low spec for this. What do you think?

Was just given one of these. Worked perfect except the battery was 8 months pregnant and pushing the screen out. took it all apart and ordered a battery for 35USD on Amazon. It's a major PITA to remove the battery as it's all glued in.
In case anyone cares, I used lots of heat to extricate the screen and battery and I don't think anything was damaged during all this. Its a good gamble at 35USD if I can get it all back together without breaking it :)
I did this and it was such a hassle but i removed the motherboard so i wouldnt short it
@@speedy1through943 as an after post, I got it all back together and figured out 1. I had cracked the screen very slightly, but it cut half the screen off. And 2. The battery always said 0% even though it would charge and the pc stayed on with the power unplugged. Sent the battery back and put the surface in the parts bin…
@@t4thfavor1212 I'm sorry to hear that and the batteries on Amazon are total trash and I would recommend the battery from Ifix it they work wonders and same with the screen because if it's not the exact match the screen won't turn on but you can hook it up with the mini displayport and get display out of it

When I'm using my surface pro 4 which I got in 2016 under the AC, the flickering problem doesn't happen, but when using it at normal room temperature the problem happens after 2 hours (and maybe faster if using it for editing or 3d modeling)
My Surface Pro 4 just died, no boot, evidently a chip failure from web results. The pen stopped working a while ago. Both sourced mid-2017, daily use for ~2-3 hrs a day.
I can buy a 2nd hand one with the pen and keyboard for 260€ should i do it? And do you ever have problems with flickergate and the battery bulging?

Hmmm… honestly, I’d go for the 3 In that case! The processors are pretty close in performance between the two, so that little bit of extra boost from the i7 would be pretty nice.

I bought the SP4 i5/8/256 version on launch day. I hated it from day one and barely used it. I hate that I cant have it in my lap and work. I tried the Brydge keyboard and cracked the display. So after replacing that, I barely touched it until two weeks ago when I installed all my vehicle diagnostic software on it and started using it as a workshop tablet.
watch out for that infamous blue/red lines towards the bottom of the screen, it plagues pro 4 models. mine appeared out of nowhere after a windows update back in the days, would appear after some time of use, then whole screen would shake up and down and make it unusable. Had to use their customer service, their service is top notch tho, but I was still in that recall window period. Hopefully urs is fixed already
Good idea! But better buy the surface pro or pro 6. They cost just a little more if not the same and are better in many ways: newer, faster, no risk of a flickering screen, might come with warrenty, less battery wear.
My surface pro4 started to occasionally flickering after 4,5 years. You never know with the pro 4.
