BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

That is the first time I got all 4 numbers rounds in quite some time.
3x8x10+4+1=245
7X4=28
28+8=36
36X25=900
900-3=897
9x100-(50+10+2+3)=835
8x50-25+10+10=395
I actually had all of them within the time, and all except the second one within a few seconds. Quite proud of it!
I had the same solutions as in the video, but for the fiest one i had 3x8x10 = 240, +4+1 = 245
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and also had one of those variations on a theme:
3 - 1 = 2
100 - 2 = 98
98 x 10 = 980
980 / 4 = 245
In this case, it has to go up to 980 first because the 4 cancels out with the 2 in the 98 and the 2 in the 10 to create 49 x 5 = 245.
I also had this solution:
100 - 10 - 8 = 82
82 x 3 = 246
246 - 1 = 245
Finally, it was a pretty easy problem if you didn't use the 100 at all:
10 x 8 x 3 = 240
240 + 4 + 1 = 245
In the second numbers round, I saw Andy's solution and also made 36 in this way:
7 x 4 = 28
28 + 8 = 36
36 x 25 = 900
900 - 3 = 897
And I also had this thematically related solution:
8 x 7 = 56
56 + 4 = 60
25 - 10 = 15
60 x 15 = 900
900 - 3 = 897
And this one based on getting up to 89 x 10:
25 x 4 = 100
100 - 8 - 3 = 89
89 x 10 = 890
890 + 7 = 897
The one thing I couldn't do was find anything with the factors, even though the target can be readily factored as 23 x 13 x 3 = 897.
In the third numbers round, I saw Andy's solution straightaway, and also had these:
100 - 2 = 98
98 x 9 = 882
882 + 3 = 885
885 - 50 = 835
10 - 3 = 7
100 - 7 = 93
93 x 9 = 837
837 - 2 = 835
100 - 3 = 97
10 - 2 = 8
97 x 8 - 776
776 + 50 + 9 = 835
In the final numbers round, I saw Paul's solution and also had these:
50 + 10 = 60
60 x 7 = 420
420 - 25 = 395
50 - 8 = 42
42 x 10 = 420'
420 - 25 = 395
50 x 7 = 350
350 + 25 + 10 + 10 = 395
50 x 10 = 500
25 - 10 = 15
15 x 7 = 105
500 - 105 = 395
10 x 8 = 80
80 x 3 = 240
4 + 1 = 5
(240 + 5 = 245)
100 - 10 = 90
90 + 3 = 93
93 x 9 = 837
(837 - 2 = 835)
Funny, they failed at the 245 een though it was super easy (240+4+1), but then the 835 was basically the same, and they had learned from their mistakes ;)
Not even remotely similar. 835 had no division, unlike Rachel's answer for 245. To get 240 is a much more complicated multiplication as it is much easier to to see the big number getting close, instead of 3 small ones. Edit: Ah, the other host mentioned the 3 small ones. Still it's not even remotely similar, so in which way did they learn from it?
@@Hedning1390
brainfart; I meant the 395. In both cases, dividing by 8 was the easiest way.
@@ricksimon9867 I still disagree. (3*8*10)+4+1=245 is not similar to 50*8-(25-10-10)=395. What because they both have an 8? Seeing a number close to 400 with a 50 it is very natural to make it with 50*8, they didn't have to be reminded from that earlier problem that multiplication by 8 was possible. Taking one of the big numbers and straight up multiplying it to get close to the answer is the most basic thing ever. That's what he tried to do with the 245 but only got close with.

_"Taking one of the big numbers and straight up multiplying it to get close to the answer is the most basic thing ever."_ - That's the point: That's the wrong approach. The standard approach is to divide by the highest small number, then the next. So in this case, divide by 10, realise that it doesn't get you anywhere; then divide by 8 which in both cases gives you a result close enough to the 30 (in the first example) and 50 (in the second example) that you already have.
Problem solved.
_
@@ricksimon9867 That's not what they did though. In both cases they tried to multiply one of the big numbers. In the first case it didn't work, in the second it did, because they are not similar. Nothing learned neither, as he clearly didn't use a different method.

Last minute clutch
395:
50 * 8 = 400
400 + 10 + 10 - 25 = 395

42 * 10 = 420
420 - 25 = 395
50 * 7 = 350
350 + 25 + 10 + 10 = 395
245 = ( 100 - 10 - 8 ) * 3 - 1

First round
8 x 3 = 24
24 x 10 = 240
240 + 4 +1 = 245
For the first round, I found a factoring solution at my first trial:
100 / 4 = 25
25 + 10 = 35
8 - 1 = 7
35 x 7 = 245
Then immediately kick myself since it can be done without 100, which is what Colin said:
3 x 8 x 10 = 240
240 + 1 + 4 = 245
For the second round, there are some other couple of ways:
25 x 4 = 100
100 - 8 - 3 = 89
89 x 10 = 890
890 + 7 = 897
25 x 4 = 100
100 + 10 + 3 = 113
113 x 8 = 904
904 - 7 = 897
For the third round, I get the solution very quickly:
100 - 10 = 90
90 x 9 = 810
50 / 2 = 25
810 + 25 = 835
Hi the intro is now sick
Final Round:
Not sen anyone with
7+5 = 15
15*25 = 375
375 + 10 + 10 = 395
245:
100 - 10 - 8 = 82
82 * 3 = 246
246 - 1 = 245
10 * 8 * 3 = 240
240 + 4 + 1 = 245
100 + 1 - 3 = 98
98 * 10 / 4 = 245
100 × 3 - 10 × (4 + 1) - 8 = -3 (and then see it just after the bell is painful)
25 × [10 - (8 - 7)] × 4 - 3 = 0 (touch tricky, but got there in the end)
100 × 9 - (50 + 10 + 2 + 3) = 0 (lovely dropdown there)
50 × 8 - (25 - 10 - 10) = 0 (nice and quick)
100 − 10 − 8 = 82
82 × 3 = 246
246 − 1 = 245
100 × 9 = 900
900 − 50 − 10 − 3 − 2 = 835
8 + 7 = 15
25 × 15 = 375
375 + 10 + 10 = 395

I did it differently

25 + 10 = 35
8 - 1 = 7
7 × 35 = 245
@@circadianizzy I worked out that you could do ((10 + 8) * 100) - 1
