BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

Has anyone ever rejected what their opponent has written down when they reached over to show their work?
I am quite sure they would cut that in editing.
@@ricksimon9867 I think that would depend on the result of someone doublechecking it.
554:
5 + 2 = 7
75 * 7 = 525
525 + 25 + 4 = 554
75 - 25 = 50
5 * 2 = 10
10 + 1 = 11
50 * 11 = 550
550 + 4 = 554
5 + 2 = 7
75 + 4 = 79
79 * 7 = 553
553 + 1 = 554
600:
7 * 3 = 21
21 + 4 = 25
25 * 6 * 4 = 600
7 * 4 = 28
28 - 3 = 25
25 * 6 * 4 = 600
6 * 4 = 24
24 - 3 = 21
21 * 7 = 147
147 + 3 = 150
150 * 4 = 600
385=8×(50-3)+8+1
Okay, where did Colin get that penguon sweater, and where can i buy it!?
Hope you'll be able to start posting these again!
4,2,5,1,75,25.
49 times 5=245.
48 times 5=240.
I: Dammit. I was looking for something of that ilk and somehow couldn't find it!
II: That one's easy. Except I got it a different easy way:
75-25=50
5 X 2 = 10
That 10 + 1 for 11
Multiply the 50 and the 11 and add the 4 for 554.
III: A fairly-easy 450 came to me just after the 30: 5 X 2 = 10 8 X 6 = 48 Subtract 3 from the 48 and multiply by the 10 for 450.
IV: A 384 came immediately: 8-3 = 5 That 5 X 75 for 375 375 + 8 + 1 = 384.
Another 384: 75 + 50 = 125 That 125 X 3 = 375 375 + 8 + 1 = 384.
Didn't see the division on that one to get the 15!
Why was the end score 68 and 70 (to Jan) but they said Nath was back the following week?
Anymore episodes you haven't uploaded any for a few months
(7*3)+4=25, 6*4=24, multiply together for 600. A bit annoying, but I got it.
(5+2)*75=525, add the 25 and 4 for 554. I struggled with my 75 times table an unreasonable amount, but the process was quite straightforward.
6+3=9, (8+2)*5=50, multiply them together for 450. I feel like Rachel will reveal a way to get spot on, but it's very not worth the effort, especially at my poor pevel of skill.
8*50=400, 75/(8-3)=15, take it away for 385. Accidentally went for 355 at first for a reason unfathomable even to myself, but I was able to correct it in good time.
385:
50 * 8 = 400
8 - 3 = 5
75 / 5 = 15
400 - 15 = 385
50 + 8 = 58
58 * 8 = 464
464 - 75 - 3 - 1 = 385
50 + 8 - 3 = 55
8 - 1 = 7
55 * 7 = 385
I couldn't understand why Rachel didn't have an assistant named Joe helping her here
600: 6 x 4 = 24 - 4 = 20 x 3 = 60 x (3 + 7) = 600
75 times 5=375.
600=6×4×(3×7+4)
(50+8-3)×(8-1)=385
451 was very difficult ... I wonder ... do Rachel use a computer, or is she a real genius ?
Genius.
If you did 8×6×5×2 you get 480 which is 29 away with a 2 and 3 left.
Rearrange it to leave multiplying by the 8 and 2 last, take 2 away before doing that takes 32 off the 480, then add 3 back on.
@@KJDaniels1302 I often use this technique too, but this time I didn't find it ...
having done many, you quickly test division by 8, and see it's 3 away from 448, 448/8=56, which was just there (5+2)*(6+2), so i had it done in half time
that said, she is hardly a genius
Strange, the GB show still use a big clock, a pen and solid numbers and letters at the age of digital...In France they use computers for a long time!
The French one seems quite soulless.
@@Chris-dm1je I like the French one, but not the same as this one with the three presenters
554=(5+2)×75+25+4
In the first numbers round, I saw Nathan's way of getting 25 and had a couple of others:
7 x 4 = 28
28 - 3 = 25
25 x 6 x 4 = 600
6 x 3 = 18
18 + 7 = 25
4 + 4 = 8
25 x 8 x 3 = 600
And I had these solutions:
6 x 4 = 24
24 - 4 = 20
7 + 3 = 10
20 x 10 x 3 = 600
7 x 3 = 21
21 + 3 = 24
24 x 4 = 96
96 + 4 = 100
100 x 6 = 600
In the second numbers round, I saw Jan's solution and also had these alternatives:
75 + 4 = 79
5 + 2 = 7
79 x 7 = 553
553 + 1 = 554
75 x 4 = 300
300 - 25 = 275
275 x 2 = 550
5 - 1 = 4
550 + 4 = 554
75 - 25 = 50
5 x 2 = 10
10 + 1 = 11
50 x 11 = 550
550 + 4 = 554
In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but also broke up the factors of 448 for this alternative:
6 + 2 = 8
5 + 2 = 7
8 x 8 x 7 = 448
448 + 3 = 451
In the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and also had these alternatives:
50 + 8 = 58
58 - 3 = 55
8 - 1 = 7
55 x 7 = 385
50 - 3 = 47
47 x 8 = 376
376 + 8 + 1 = 385
50 + 8 = 58
58 x 8 = 464
464 - 75 - 3 - 1 = 385
(75+25)*(5+1/2)+4=554
I don't think the rules allow this. Every step has to end in a whole number.
Yes, you can't use 0.5 or any fraction.
You would have to multiply up, manipulate and divide back down (there is a clip somewhere with four large and multiplying 75 then dividing by 25 or something).
7X3 = 21+4 = 25X6 = 150X4 = 600
6X4 = 24-4 = 20X3 = 60 7+3 = 10X60 = 600
75+4 = 79 5+2 = 7X79 = 553+1 = 554
75X2 = 150-5 = 145X5 = 580-25 = 555-1 = 554
6X5 = 30-2 = 28 2X8 = 16X28 = 448+3 = 451
8-3 = 5+50 = 55 8-1 = 7X55 = 385
8-3 = 5 75÷5 = 15 50X8 = 400-15 = 385
