As a diehard Seahawks fan who's watched every game since we got Russ, I can tell you a few things about his game that most people probably don't realize.
Obviously he breaks sacks, extends plays, and throws a beautiful deep ball. He's also a 2 minute drill god, maybe the best in that situation other than Tom. Those are his main claims to fame.
1, His height is a serious limitation. He's had a HoF career despite of it, but his inability to make short/intermediate throws over the middle do in fact limit what you can do in the passing game.
2, He progresses through reads very slowly. He would always rather throw a jump ball to his first read than find a more open guy, probably an habit he developed from having bad O-lines.
3, He is very scared of throwing INTs. Normally that is good, but when it gets to the point of not targeting your best WR when they have clear separation/space, just because of who might be trailing them in coverage? (I.E. DK Metcalf vs Jalen Ramsey) It's a bad thing. He'll have an open receiver and leave yards on the table because he doesn't want to throw a bad ball that gets picked.
4, He's lost a step in the agility department from the Russell of old. He is still a mobile QB, but he's never had the same slipperiness since his MCL sprain in 2016. He played through it with a boot, and (in my opinion) should've sat out and let it heal off the field. He looked horrible with the boot on, and it was a similar situation last season when he tried playing with the injured finger.
5, His accuracy takes time to find it's rhythm. He'll usually start games off with a pretty mediocre completion percentage, and it makes moving the chains very difficult in the 1st/2nd Quarters, because he'll just straight up miss guys in the flats on 2nd/3rd down when you really need to be converting those high percentage throws.
I think Russell is one of the best Quarterbacks to EVER play the position in the way that he plays it, but after his big payday and his leg injury, he hasn't ever had the consistency down-to-down to push us over the edge in the playoffs. Glorious 4th quarter comebacks are very difficult to pull off when you go down 20+ points every game in the 1st half. Back when we had Marshawn Lynch, the offense was mainly ran through him, and Russ would rarely be asked to pass more than 20 times a game, and usually never without hard playaction and a designed roll-out. A lot of the sacks he takes are AFTER having 3+ seconds in the pocket, often times even 6-7 seconds after the play is snapped (which is insane).
His magic-making in clutch moments will leave it's mark in football history, and my own mind as the best QB the Seahawks have ever had, BUT those theatrics didn't come without their drawbacks.

Pete Carroll is an old school coach that doesn't want to evolve because he's won so much in the past running the philosophy he's been running since the 80s... That's why the Seahawks offense was predictable, not because of Russ or his playing style... Russ has gotten so use to doing everything himself and it hindered his mindset... Thank Carroll for that.... And it's pretty dumb you say NEVER gonna win a playoff because you're gonna be looking pretty crazy if he wins a Superbowl in Denver...

Btw the second SB they went to, look at his NFC Championship game against the Packers, they won despite of him. Russ is a one dimensional deep ball thrower who throws with no anticipation. He will always have a couple plays a game but the rest is very mediocre.

Russ has such good deep ball accuracy they should just have the long snapper snap the ball to him and then he won't have to worry about the O-line.
@California Dreaming Also being that deep in the pocket makes it extremely hard on your OTs because the angle for the edge to the QB becomes far easier. Also yea defenses would adjust they just wouldn’t fit the run at all because why would you? Teams would go into crazy allotments that would make setting the protections far harder

Funny, but he will need to be under center more in this offense for the play action to work properly. Wilson has the foot speed still to do boots and play fakes, etc. The line will be average for sure, unless some of the guys step up in the new system. They are good run blockers, but pass pro is not quite there.
Pass rushers would just run around the tackles because they would never be in position to even slow them down.
@@pxrays547 Yeah the Broncos O-line is somewhat better than the Seahawks, but still overall middle of the pack. Could help that the staff around him are guys who are looking to optimize Russ' pass attack than lame it out with running on early downs and having to settle for a 3rd and long.

The broncos staff is obviously going to adjust to fit his play style, Alex is just saying his way of playing offense and his playcalling is pretty different when compared to the rest of the league. There’s a rather very long history of coaching staffs not adjusting to their players, to assume the broncos will is rather an egregious assumption
you can't adjust an offense that feature Jerry Jeudy and Sutton. I can guarantee you that this 2 are not DK and Lockett. He will struggle in Denver unless he adjust his playstyle for close or medium passes. Or the Broncos can get some deep threats WR like Metcalf and Lockett :)

@@antonioputina6883 I'm going to disagree here. I'd equate jeudy to someone like Doug Baldwin. A guy who has slick feet and a dynamic release. I think jeudy will flourish so long as he catches the ball. And while Sutton and Patrick individually may not be as good as DK having a guy on either side who can catch the jump ball just expands russ' options in the outside where he likes to throw anyways. Someone is going to be open. This is also completely ignoring Albert O and Dulcich. And while Russ may not target the TE often, much like inside routes. It just takes completing one to open up the offense

The draft capital we received will pay dividends down the road. We were seeing his tendencies and so were the defenses. I wish him well next season with the exception of Week 1 of course.

Russ' problem is that the Seahawks has a bottom-five offensive line for most of his career. His greatness was shown by the fact that he had a bottom-five defensive line for most of that span (and still regularly made the playoffs.)
Exactly- he held that team up despite them not giving him anything to work with
Denver has 2 1000 yard backs that defenses will have to respect. The run game will help Russ open up the field with play action.

What Russ accomplished in Seattle was a miracle, especially given that he had a coach with what seems like a 9th grade education.
Expect a better Russell Wilson in Denver because there’s no Pete Carroll.
Russ’s post-LoB W-L trajectory was upward until he injured his hand. Let’s look at his entire career record.
2010 (no Russ, w/LoB + M.L.): 7-9
2011 (no Russ, w/LoB + M.L.): 7-9
2012: 11-5 (Russ’s rookie year!)
2013: 13-3
2014: 12-4
2015: 10-6
2016: 10-5-1 (injured, LoB done)
2017: 9-7 (FK missed 4 big kicks!)
2018: 10-6
2019: 11-5
2020: 12-4
2021: 2-2 start, 6-8 overall (injured)
On Target % (2020)
*Russell Wilson: 79.5*

In 10 seasons, Russ has lost 5 or fewer games 6 times, and it likely would have been 7 if he hadn’t been injured in 2021.
People forget that in 2016 Russ played the entire season while injured in both legs, with broken right ribs, yet still improved on the prior year’s record with one fewer loss.
In 2017, the Seahawks were four missed in-range game-winning FK kicks away from being 13-3 in 2017.
And we all know what he did over his first 5 seasons. He averaged 11 wins per season. He averaged 10.5 wins per year until 2021, and that was without a reliable RB, a solid O-Line, consistent D, or elite #1 WRs.
Furthermore, people should look back at what happened when Russ took over the Seahawks as a true rookie.
Based on Russ’s rookie year, people had better be thinking ‘chip for the Broncos.
He came within one LoB letdown within the last 30 seconds of the 2012-13 NFC Divisional of leading the Seahawks to a probable Super Bowl appearance.
The team had been 7-9 in back-to-back seasons prior to Russ being drafted. Russ led them to 11-5 as a true rookie.
He squarely outplayed RG3 - that year’s wrongly voted ROY - in the wildcard round, and then engineered a brilliant would-be game-winning drive against Atlanta.
With 30 seconds left, the LoB allowed Matt Ryan to torch them for the length of the field for the win. Awaiting the Seahawks in that year’s NFC Championship we’re the 49ers, a team that wouldn’t beat the Seahawks once from 2011 until 2018.
That suggests strongly that the Seahawks were likely 30 seconds and an NFC Championship game from meeting Joe Flacco and the Ravens in that Year’s Super Bowl.
A play here and there and Russ begins his career by leading a previously sub-.500 team to three straight Super Bowl rings!
If there’s any QB you should trust to get the Broncos to the SB in Y1, it is Russ - who is undefeated (3-0) against the current crop of AFCw QBs, btw.

The Seahawks' inability to advance past the divisional round since 2014 prevented Wilson from receiving the obsessive notoriety of Mahomes and Brady (and others), even though he had been far from the reason Seattle could not recapture the Super Bowl glory he experienced earlier in his career.
Through 131 games, Wilson had the fifth-most touchdown passes in NFL history (241) and was tied with Aaron Rodgers for the fewest interceptions (69). His passer rating of 102.3 was the second-highest ever, behind Rodgers.
That passer rating is now higher than it was, even after his injury season in 2021.
He finished 2020 with 4,212 yards, 40 TDs, 13 INTs (incl. 4 WR-influenced), 68% complete, and a 107 Passer rating.
He finished 2021 with 3113 yards, 25 TDs, 6 INTs, 65% complete, and a 103 passer rating in 10 healthy games of 14 played - WITH A BUM THROWING HAND!!!
For a guy who has so many flaws, he sure tends to keep great company when he’s setting and breaking records.
Any narrative that Russ is washed or overrated is ridiculous. Now that he’s free of Pete his best football is ahead of him, which is scary.
To blame it all on the team and none on the QB is simply always a mistake. It’s not all on Russ and it’s not all on Pete and the Seahawks. Let’s try for some objectivity

I always admire QBs with great pre snap ability. For me it's hard to even notice these things on film and in a game I'd find it impossible. I'm not quite as high on Russ in Denver as I think loads of ppl are. Especially considering the division I feel like it'll be rough.

Peyton Manning being a great example! He would get out of the huddle quickly, then the team used motion to expose whether man or zone etc. and he'd bark out adjustments. Russ gets out of the huddle with 5 seconds left, makes no adjustments, and if he tries it is too late and we get a delay of game. I really think Russ was incompatible with the offense that Waldron brings from the Rams for these kind of reasons (besides his poor performance at slants and timing throws). Russ was great in his own way, but it's a way that doesn't work all the time.

I'm not arguing I just think you've missed some very important information Wilson now has 4 WRs Sutton a 50/50 machine, Patrick the udfa who has led the team the last 2 seasons, Jeudy who this type of offense will fit nicely and Hamler the fast guy. 3 TEs Albert O who is as fast and as good as Fant, drafted the 2nd TE G. Dulich and Beck a do it all type. 2 Top RBs 13/14th ranked, and actual Oline with a 1 time top 3 LT a top 3 Run Blocking RT. New offensive minded HC (Wilson has never had) who was the OC of B2B MVP seasons. Who is really good at Run plays his 17 Jags averaged 145yds a game you know what sets up PA? good RBs and run game Broncos are about to have a great season its already starting top 5 most complete team in the NFL best FA/ Off season in the NFL.
Oh, I LOVE the weapons that Russ is inheriting. I think Sutton is going to blow up this year. This video isn't about how Russ is bad/will struggle, just that there are limitations to the type of offense he can run.

I think something to consider might be the head coach in general. Throwing in the middle there’s so many bodies there risks a turnover and as he came into the league on a team that wanted to just move the chains and let the defence win the game it might’ve been coached into him to avoid turnovers at all costs. Maybe with a Hackett, he’ll be encouraged more to make more throws down the middle without as much of a stress to avoid turnovers. Who knows though I’m just excited to actually have good offence for once.
Been a fan a long time, but I assure you he didn't hit the middle, check downs, or intermediate throws because of the Hawks game planning. It's just not his jam.
It’s because he’s short and the o line blocks his view of the middle to certain extent making him apprehensive about passes inside the numbers. Kyler Murray plays similarly as well hits outside the numbers well he’s also “short” for a QB as well.
@@mikehatten5738 in 2012-15 when he was an underdog, I would have taken great offense to that. But it's the most likely reason. That moon ball is a beautiful thing. But you can't stay on schedule with nothing but go balls. Our 3rd down conversion rate last year was so bad it nearly killed the defense 😅

@@usopenitentiary I think the graph in this video, as well as others I have seen illustrate the portion of the field 3 ignores. Geno started 3 games. The most affective years you had Lynch pounding the rock and taking deep shots off play action. I know this, since Wilson got his first mega deal the Hawks never made it past the Divisional round. Great to always be in the hunt, rough to always be one and done in the post season. I don't wish him any I'll will, but I'm curious how he does in a stacked AFC West 🧐
this is the third NFCW QB you've criticized for not throwing to the middle of the field and I'm beginning to wonder if this is a symptom of the defensive schemes in that division rather than some inherent deficit that these QBs share
It’s kinda the opposite side of the west coast style. Run game and playaction rein supreme above all else. Here if you can master that you have all you need. Two top backs, a good slot guy, and a deep threat. That’s what is needed. But this style has drawbacks. It can sputter out if there’s no run game help and become one dimensional. And when that happens the game usually falls apart. That was one thing that made Russ so special. He often became that FACTOR that kept things from collapsing with his scrambling and ad lib play. He could make something from nothing. Run game died? He could run for ten yards. Passing game hit a wall? He’d scramble until SOMEONE was open. That was what was so magical about him. However this is not a sustainable way to play the game. It’s up to him if he wants to add a different style to his game play so he uses more of the field. If not? He’s just going to fizzle out. The Seahawks have tried many times to expand his style and it’s never stuck. Wish you broncos fans luck! He’s good. But he seems stubborn in his ways. If he can grow out of that? You might get to a playoff game next year. (Not this season I just don’t see an instant mesh) if not? You guys will suffer the pains packers fans have suffered for ages.

I’d say he probably ignores the middle of the field for multiple reasons. Height for sure, his inability to throw with anticipation, and afraid to put the ball in harms way. Just my opinion tho, I’m not an expert.
The people in front of any quarterback are 6'4" to 6'8" and defenders always have hands up. All quarterbacks throw in lanes. All you need to do is look at the success of many of the short guy QBs, and the failures of the one that are taller than average, 6'2-6'5" is probably the sweet spot, at that height, they are still throwing in lanes where a flash of the receiver is visible. Part of the issue is the offense in Seattle they used. Wilson's throw pattern is less than average in the middle from the line of scrimmage to five yards down field, and average for middle mid-depth patterns, and higher than average for patterns of deep middle. [edit] To add, short and intermediate passes in the middle have a higher percentage of tipped balls, interceptions, and fumbles after catch just because of the traffic. Sure, being a few inches shorter gives one a slight disadvantage, but at this talent level it is very minor, but something that people really overhype and don't understand.
Wouldn't say it's just on him, seems like a conscious decision by the Seahawks. The chart at 7:24 shows they barely run routes in the middle.

Let me ask you a question, please name any 6-4 QB (or any QB) in NFL history that after their first 10 years was already Top 10 all time in passing rating, TD-INT ratio, yards per pass, yards per carry, completion percentage, TDs per year, had close to 300 TD passes, less than 90 INTs and nearly 5000 rushing yards.

I'd be interested to see his target map when he had Jimmy Graham. I remember quite a lot of quick PA hitters up the seam. As a lifelong Seahawks fan, I've seen every single snap of Russel's career. While he is good pre-snap, too many times he made up his mind before the ball was hiked. I think that's why he's looked almost allergic to dump offs and underneath routes at times. He and Pete's love for explosive plays factors in here as well. He hasn't had a back since Lynch that he knew could catch a flat pass and make a guy miss. And his elusiveness is certainly not what it was 5 years ago, Dlinemen routinely chase him down from behind.
Russ doesn't have a Lockett or DK in Denver either. So maybe he'll be forced to adapt. But he does have a more well rounded and diverse group of WRs. Jeudy probably compares favorably to Doug Baldwin, and they had great chemistry.

I don't see the 7 rings but the 2 different teams with superbowl success will give "yes" as the answer in regard to equalling that uncommon accomplishment of taking 2 teams to the superbowl. Montana didn't. Favre didn't. Nameth didn't. Stabler didnt. Vick didn't. That's just off tip top of my head without verification but gets across the point. Russell should be considered a notch abova a few other qbs who were unable to reach a championship in the 1st year with a new team after a successful time with the team eho drafted and signed out of college. It will be interesting to see how Russ meshes with the Broncos’ other skill position players. I’m still not convinced that Jeudy, Patrick, Sutton, and Williams are all that. The Broncos might be deeper at wide receiver than Seattle, but I still think Lockett and Metcalf are a cut above what Denver has right now. Given how many Russ fans want to constantly immunize him from criticism and blame Pete Carroll and his coordinators for their offensive schemes, it will be interesting to see if the problem in Seattle was really Russ or if it was the people around him.
Denver has Williams & Gordon at RB. Jeudy, Sutton, Patrick, even Hamler. The weapons have been suffering due to poor QB play sadly. The issue in Seattle was more so the Oline and yeah the coaching was bad they never were letting Russ cook yk
Sutton was a pro bowler with a past his prime Flacco, Brandon Allen, and Lock throwing the ball, then he got hurt and had played an entire year post ACL with Lock and Teddy not going to him all that much. The thing with the Broncos’ WRs is they have never played with a QB of Russ’ caliber. It’s going to be interesting to see how Lockett and Metcalf look with Geno/Lock for a full season
Lockett/Metcalf are probably better proven individual talents where they are schemed up in limited ways. But the Broncos receiver group can probably get as good baseline production with their tall outside guys and however Jeudy can grow into. Also the TE help is something Hackett/Outten (Broncos OC) have experience with and will be interesting to see them integrate Albert O and Dulcich in the pass game. Also Broncos def has the better stable RB group in Williams/Gordon. I also feel the Broncos staff with Hackett will let Russ cook better and put him better situations than stubborn ol Pete C did.

Wilson looked great down the stretch last season when Rashaad Penny went on a tear and Russ played complimentary football. This is when Russ' strengths showed. The play-action. The hot-reads/alerts. Those get amplified because of the run game. Make no mistake, Russ needs more support than most realize. He can only take you so far.

In 2020, they were on an offensive tear during the first half of the season, and then they stumbled a bit during the second half. Of course, they blamed Brian Schottenheimer (as always). Good video. I think the reason Russ isn’t really “comfortable” attacking the middle of the field with his passes is because of his lack of height, combined with the fact that a lot of the time it would require him to go across the field with his pass in an unnatural way to get the pass back towards the center of the field, as he does so much rolling out and scrambling towards the numbers. The times he feels comfortable attacking the middle is when he sees it’s one of those breakdowns where the entire middle just opens up and he can take off up the gut with the ball for 10-20 yards.
Yep I don’t think he can see the middle of the field and therefore cannot read the defense. It’s amazing what he’s done in the league with this deficiency. If he was like 6’3” he would be the best qb in the league.

As a Seahawk fan I will tell you that RW is one of the best QBs to ever play the game and is in my eyes "The Best" QB of all time under pressure. What I have learned though in the last 7 years is that it takes much more than a great QB to win championships.
I wish Wilson the best but I haven't been this excited for the Seahawks season in a while now that Pete and John can get back to the championship style Defense and Running game philosophy.

I agree with you Ryan. It’s sad to see how much disrespect Wilson has gotten from a lot of hawk fans. If Wilson won my teams only championship, I would be a loyal fan to that guy forever. Guess in Seattle, some fans think that they’re the ones who win the football games. When in reality u need a good/great qb to even make it to the dance. Wilson is one of the funnest Qbs to ever play the game. When New England and Seattle played in the super bowl, it was the best most entertaining game that was played in any Super Bowl.
Good analysis. Seattle for a long time had very basic routes. Very close to just sending all receivers straight down the field. I think that led to some of his habits mentioned by Sholtzi below.
Please do a video about how Stafford improved in the playoffs compared to the regular season and what you think he'll improve next season.

During Hackett's first offseason in Green Bay, him Rodgers and McFleur sat down and created a fresh playbook combining the best parts of each of their systems and it worked amazingly for the Packers. It'll be interesting to see if we get a similar thing in Denver with a new effective style of play coming in

From what Hackett has been saying about the offense I think his plan is going to be to lean into alert concepts heavily.
I'm just.a guy with a sofa and a TV screen, but this analysis is dead on in detail. Except for his recent proclivity for standing in the pocket instead of gaining time by rolling out. I've heard various things that picked up some of this, but kudos in getting it right. I would be willing to bet that some variant of this calculation came into play as the Hawks decided not to pay up for another few years. As a Seattle fan was I happy seeing Russ go? Hell no. But I was not blind to his weaknesses. That heat map you showed in the middle of your piece says it all: not much but crickets and cobwebs in the middle of the field for RW. How many Sundays have I screamed at him to throw to the tight end? To hit the slant? To go up the seam? Let's just say many many. You showed some great bits that showed while you still have to love Russell--my gawd those long balls are so pretty. Jeez. But there are many times when he had someone in the 7-8 yard range wide open and either could not or would not hit them. If the Broncs can protect him better than the Hawks on his long meditations on the secondary, things will look better than they did in Seattle. If not ...

I wanted to add this but didn't have time: Russ's interception rate is always much lower than league average which means he's extremely careful with the football. I think because he's worried about throwing towards the middle where there are more bodies plus the fact he can't see nearly as well are the primary reasons he doesn't target the middle of the field.
@@AlexRollinsNFL You may well be right, and not a thing wrong with not throwing picks. The thing is, though, for whatever the reason, he doesn't, and that leaves a big part of the game unplayed. I would have loved him to stay for all his minor faults, but I'm not heartsick, either, as many are. We dumped a great center and a ton of cash on Jimmy Graham, and didn't use him nearly to potential, and that's true of any of the TEs we've had-except in the red zone, for the obvious reason that everything is short and madness, and a big body is what you want. Good luck to Russ, and I'm very curious what Pete has in mind. I expect to see all those shorter throws, and wouldn't be surprised if there weren't as many or maybe more pass attempts.

LOL it did carry over. Lombardi sadly has treated Herbert like Brees more than a guy who can hit a dime down 50 yards if he has the match up. This isn't his first time coaching a QB with a great arm as he had last years' SB QB winner in Matthew Stafford when he was the Lions OC back in 2015. Really shows how deluded Charger fans are talking up Lombardi like he's amazing. Might as well not bring up the QB coach Shane Day whose like Lombardi is ineffective as hell. Enjoy seeing Herbert not have an real offensive scheme developed to his nutsy strength and seeing Lombardi make him play conservative while Staley just nods in approval.

@@t4d0W the Chargers were one of the best offenses in the NFL and Herbert had over 5k yards and 38 tds. Clearly Lombardi offense wasnt the issue since Herbert improved. The issue was the Chargers defense and if we had a middle pack defense then we would be in the playoffs. I'm guessing the only reason we dont throw it deep more often is because we are lacking a speed WR. Sure we have Mike Williams but throwing for a 50/50 is too risky to do it often

After re-watching the 2020 games the play calling was way different and although it seemed like we had more long ball targets that season, I think it's due to defenses not expecting Herbert's arm talent in the deep part of the field. Defense was 100% the issue for them last year. Lombardi may not be the greatest/most unique coordinator but I don't know enough about him to make that call. I'm just hoping he evolves his scheme to match Herbert's strengths cause he can put the ball in places most QB's in the league can't.
SO interested to see how the next few years play out for him. I was a huge fan of his in Seattle, but at the same time the last...3 or 4 seasons did lead to a lot of eye-rolling as he launched low percentage deep balls on 3rd down, flat out ignoring a guy standing wide open just past the sticks.
Russ is an all-time great thrower of the football, velocity, arc, placement. Also an all-time escape artist. He possesses a few traits that few QBs EVER have had.
That said, the longer he plays, the older he gets, and the more film there is on him, the more it feels like his below average traits are having a bigger and bigger impact.
I'm really interested to see how it works for him in Denver, and how the Seahawks offense looks without him. As you said in the video, they tried to install a few interesting offensive concepts, Waldron brought a ton of the Rams style layered crossers, and after a few games they just disappeared, because it was clear that Russ either wouldn't or couldn't throw those short/intermediate middle routes. The Seahawks have consistently been in the bottom of the league in YAC, and when you think about the receivers they've had over that period, it doesn't quite add up.
I find it hilarious that the two HOF, all time great athletes, who can only run 1 offense, that’s entirely centered around them…are both named “Russ” 😂

Thanks David! I think that's part of it, and also that he's extremely careful with the ball. I wanted to touch on this but didn't have time in the episode, but if you look at his INT totals they are always very low. He's very cautious with the ball (which is good!) but I think that makes him hesitant to attack the middle where he doesn't have super clean looks (and he struggles to see a little bit cause he's not very tall)

I thought this would be a hit piece, but you made some good points. The moment you showed Russell Wilson not throwing to the middle of the field, is where your thesis became questionable. And I say that in the most respectful way possible. Russell Wilson has played in the NFL for 10 years, not 2 or 3. He threw to the middle of the field far more often before 2019. The heat map shows this. Most of what you're critiquing here is the Air Coryell offense with Schottenheimer. Which was then merged with Waldron's offense. An offense with Russell Wilson can be far more consistent and sustainable with an offense built around him, and not Pete Carroll. DK and Lockett are receivers made for classic Pete ball. You cannot run a consistent passing offense with those two. You can however have a great running game complimented with those two receivers. Drop back concepts are always going to be limited when you have two deep threat receivers, a limited power run offensive line, and a conservative coach who wants to limit turnovers.
Trust me. There a plenty of times a middle of the field option was open that he didn’t take. Yes it was an issue with the Schotty offense at times but Waldron actually did change that and it didnt matter. Throwing over the middle is Russ’ biggest flaw as great as he is. It affects his 3rd down conversions greatly as a result. Saying that isn’t bashing the guy; it’s just reality

That Oline in Seattle has limited play call variety to some extent in run and pass, they have not made the switch to a progressive/younger offensive coach, and they did not give him a heck of a lot of quick pass/easy completions. That said Russ does have work to do. And it's rumored for over a year that he wanted to land somewhere where he'd be pushed. Now he has one of the more forward thinking offensive playcallers collaborating with him (that actually has final say), full buy in from the organization, and even Peyton Manning as a consistent sounding board in the film room.
The ball is in his court if he wants to evolve. Some of it may be playcalling. Some scheme. Some height. So hard to say. Probably a combination of all.
They actually got him an OC that did that initially but the guy in the video is right. Russ has his preferences and so they offensive eventually morphs into what he’s most comfortable with..hence why he starts so strong and finishes the season more shaky-he falls back into predictable habits
As a seahawk fan, Russ just needs to throw short passes middle more to open his deep ball concept pass. That’s why Payton manning did it. Even Tom Brady does it too.

I don’t think anyone realizes Wilson doesn’t need to play like a top 8 QB for denver to win games. They just need him to be top 15. They’ll win a ton more games.

But with russ you're getting a top 15 qb but paying him top 5 money, so you can't make up for his weaknesses by getting and keeping playmakers with a cap.

After watching this I really appreciate Wilson more and more. The right play caller and it's a rap. This guy is smart. Knew when to slide knew how to take over and was clutch. Played with what they gave him and now Let's see what happens with a different offensive philosophy.

As a Denver fan, we have a young very dynamic receiver corp, 2 backs that if they stay healthy will absolutely slash up defenses, and a fairly solid defense to hopefully keep the score down so Russ can play calculated and conservative. This is all in theory tho, however im actually excited for this season and hopefully seeing 1st yr progress but I k ow yr 2 and 3 will be better yet still.

Not gonna lie as a huge broncos fan I came into this video assuming it was a hit piece to counter all the positive stuff going on for the broncos right now. I would say the big things Russ has now though, is a GM who is more involved and really wants to put Russ and the team in a good place, which really Seattle didn’t do. Their offensive line was really bad for a long time and that’s why running the ball wasn’t smart on their part. Broncos need a solid right tackle, which all reports from camp indicate they may have, and I would say the one two punch of Gordon and Williams is a big improvement over Carson and penny or Dallas or whoever it was when healthy. Also on the middle of the field stuff I think that if you look at the pieces as well that could be a change. Seattle had very little in ways of non blocking tight ends and Denver has Albert O who I believe is underrated (homer I know) and Dulcich who the front office really believe in. But like y’all said it really just depends if Russ is willing to adapt to the new team or if he wants to be bullheaded and not change. Hopefully the former. My issue is that when Wilson was winning the Seahawks had a running back the defense had to respect and since Lynch the running backs have had good games but not really done well in the playoffs. Wilson also seems to think he should be doing stuff other than what he is good at because I think he wants to throw the ball like Patrick Mahomes and some of the other big offenses and he just cant do that. Nate Hackett has a lot of plays in his offense to get easy yards but for GB a lot of those plays didnt work in the playoffs. With the Broncos personnel I wish they would run a McVay style offense but that has already been tried with WIlson and I think the Broncos are not going to be as happy with this trade in the end because I feel like Russell is starting to trend down pretty hard last year. I'm not sure what Broncos fans expect but I think they are at best the 7th best team in the conference because every division but the south has two teams that are better than the Broncos and they may end up being 4th in their own division and I really don't see them making the playoffs. Even tho the Broncos have a lot of good players they dont have any legit stars and I dont see Russell making the big plays that any of the top qb's in the league cud make right now
I think Russell Wilson has and can make plays that alot of QBs cannot make so I somewhat disagree. The Broncos are one of the most complete rosters in the NFL and I think ur underselling how talented that team is. I do think they have legitimate stars that haven't been given the national attention, and for good reason... Denver hasn't been good. But thing I look at is Denver went 7-7 with Bridgewater and that says something. I think it was clear that Denver's weapons hit a ceiling that the QB play and coaching capped them too. Because when u look at the offensive weapons, it is a very talented group that to this point hasn't had a QB who is as capable of making plays and enabling strengths of receivers etc. I think Wilson can do that and actually his strengths line up really nicely with Sutton and Patrick who make there hay on the outside. Honestly think Sutton will blow up, I mean he had 1100 yards with an old Flacco, Brandon Allen and rookie Lock. And say what u will about Wilson but he is significantly better than those crop of guys and actually has a skillset that fits nicely with Sutton's and the reliable Tim Patrick. I think it is hard to gauge where Wilson will be at next season but basing off of last year I think is a little sketchy. He was coming off a finger injury to his hand that realistically he shouldn't of been playing on so early. But that just speaks to his mentality. So I dont think we can be categorizing where Denver sits before the season because 1, there is no guarantees in the stacked AFC West. 2 I think that Broncos teams floor is too low to lose anything under 7-8 wins and 3 I actually dont think alot of people know outside of Denver how competitive and talented and deep of a group they have. So I think going from Teddy Bridgewater to Russell Wilson will only pay dividends for the team and that sort of move puts them in a position where they can seriously compete in a tough divison and conference. Again say what u will about Wilson but he is a huge improvement from what Denver has had in recent seasons and If they can go 7-7 with Bridgewater I am opitimistic they have a much higher ceiling than that with a QB who has made the playoffs 8 times in 10 seasons.

The point was made that it’s easier take away the number one wr and stop Russ. But that will be even harder to do with the broncos who have 3 elite wr and also have 2 above average running backs to make playaction easier. Therefore with all these weapons they won’t be able to take away the number one.
Lol we had 2 elite wide recievers and 2 stud running backs and he was shut down. Denvers o line not being great isnt gunna help him either. Wilsons only weakness from what ive watched him in Seattle for 10 years is the fact he holds the ball way to long when he isnt the mobile guru he used to be. Amazing arm. Amazing long ball. Amazing long ball accuracy. Only 2 negatives Holds the ball too long. Runs literally into sacks now. You can have good backs and good wide recievers its not gunna fix his holdin the ball long. Its a him issue.
This was a great breakdown. Haven't seen anyone else post something so on point. I'm excited to see what Wilson does in Denver. I don't think he'll be the great QB that Bronco fans are hoping for. At best, I think he'll do what he did in Seattle, which was good enough for first round exits in the playoffs.

Russell Wilson is running into the same thing Ben Roethlisberger had in Pittsburgh. Carried by a great defense to a championship early in his career which inflated his worth, but could not replicate his success once the team around him faded and he became "the guy".
Russell Wilson is a good quarterback, but like Ben, has little things that will keep him from joining the elite. Denver's ceiling is playoffs, but no championships. Russ is 33 and very likely not going to change or adjust his game.

Yeah, heard that from Steelers fans for the last ten years. The QB is going to lift the team to greatness, when it turned out to be beyond his means, and his great early success stunts his growth. After all, Russell doesn't have to change his game, he already had a ring. There's a reason why Seattle let him go. They reached their ceiling with Wilson post-LOB. Playoff appearances but that's as far as they go.

This is not factually correct. The defense became great in part because of Russ' mobility and ability to keep them off the field. The points per game doubled and the run game went from bottom half to top 5. He led the league in touchdown passes for 3 years straight. Ben isn't even close in comparison
@@Smooth258 exactly!! I like Ben early on in his career, but he never was on the same level as Wilson. Even without a defense, Russ has been carrying the Seahawks for the last 5 years. He’s the whole reason Seahawks have been relevant. Everyone saying he’s declining, but he’s been competitive in the hardest division in football for his whole career. He’s going to be great in Denver. Elway will bring players in to help him.
After this year, everyone’s going to be saying the exact opposite. Either way, as a Broncos fan, I can’t wait for this season to start. Not having a decent QB since Manning and a bunch of bunk coaches, Denver is going to be fun to watch and have lots of prime time games. I’m ready for football!!

The seahawks have CONSTANTLY made decisions regarding players AND coaches to try to make russ happy. Not just O line and draft picks. Those are just the most recent and publicly obvious ways he manipulated the franchise. For years, if russ doesn't like you, you're gone. If you don't like his constant Bible thumping in the locker room, you're gone. If you don't run the offense he wants, you're gone. It's no surprise that we just had probably the best off season recruiting in seahawks history the second he leaves.
Russ is an amazing athlete. No doubt. And he's good enough to get denver to the playoffs. But he only chose denver because he assumes that the administration is weak. Not sure what people are looking at but I am not sure Russ is capable of running an offense which consists of anything but Russ running around and looking for the deep ball. This is how Russ plays, I am not convinced Waldron didn’t try to run different concepts but Russ panics and starts scrambling around. Kurt Warner did a good piece on Russ not taking the easy throws but instead chucking it deep. I honestly think he has an issue throwing over the middle because of his height and this results in his lack of throwing with much anticipation. Btw I don’t think Russ’ pre snap reads are all that great.
