I can't believe I had lost your videos! Im having the toughest time and day ever and boy oh boy...I've been watching so many plant vids to calm down and I have to say, yours put me in a TRANCE. You are a QUEEN! Curing anxiety and educating us about plants My birthday just passed and all I got was 3 alocasias I bought myself. I wish to GOD Zebrina were readily available in NYC. I got a Frydek tattoo recently (its my fav Alo), though im looking at a slightly overwatered pot right now. Anyway, this video made me realize I deserve LARGE alocasias, and that I was right all along about giving them a bit more light than always suggested. THANK YOU BOO
Awww that is so cool to hear, I struggle with anxiety and intrusive thoughts so I know exactly what you're looking for and that's also why I make my videos like I do! So thank you thank you thank you ❤️ I'm so sorry to hear you're struggling, take care of yourself and belated happy happy birthday! I'm glad you bought yourself some plants, and yes you so deserve large Alocasias! They're awesome.
Love that Zebrina reticulata I've recently discovered the hard way that these babies love Lots of light! Direct sunlight is even good and doesn't hurt them as long as they have plenty of humidity. Oops, sorry, variegata- I personally love the leaves more than stems but she's all good.
Beautiful collection Roos, your zebrina variegata is amazing! I’m a big fan of Alocasia too. I grow several and the zebrina, black velvet and frydek are my favorites. They’re thriving in bright light, my plant room has south facing windows also and I supplement in the lowlight areas with grow lights, so the whole room is lit. My Alocasia bambino did get spider mites a couple months ago, I treated it and haven’t had any issues lately. 🤞 I try to keep on top of cleaning the leaves as a preventative measure but I like the idea of using predatory mites. 🌱🌿🌵💕
I don't have the space for alocasias and haven't really found one that I really want. The lockdown situation have also reduced the amount of plants I've bought/swapped. Yesterday I did harvest my first Ceropegia woodii variegata seeds and my Christia vespertilionis gave me viable seeds and they have been successfully germinated. Plants have kept me sane during these weird times.
Lord I wish alocasia azlanii were priced lower than 250 in the states. Every single one of those alocasia is on my wishlist! Love you and your channel 🥰❤️
Thanks for this. I just started collecting them and started small with a stingray, Polly and luaderbachiana-Purple sword they have started showing up in our grocery store. Now I'm going to move then to a better lighting situation!
Happy to see another Alocasia fan! 🙌🏽 Your Zebrina Reticulata is stunning! Mine is still a baby and growing sooooo slow. I am in the US and just purchased another Azlanii since I killed the first 😢. They are pretty pricey here, between $160-$250 depending on size of the plant.
I'm just getting back into houseplants and I got a few cuttings from a friend including an alocasia. It had a root so I put it into soil this week and I'm hoping it makes it. I'm eager for the challenge.
Greetings from Florida, USA. I love Alocacias! Just purchased my 1st baby Zebrina reticulata with one leaf but it birthed another quickly within approx 3 wks.
Thank you for all your videos. I often learn something useful, but also your happy personality is a balm. I have three Alocasia, a tiny dancer, which is fun because it looks like a water plant swaying in the air, a black velvet that I love, and a Frydek that I feel I’m still learning, but getting the hang of and I’m looking forward to bigger leaves, even if they shade some of my other plants and I have to rearrange again (I feel I rearrange almost every day). In the spring I want to order a regal shield, which is affordable. I’m obsessed with the deep green leaves with red backs and bright veins. I also, someday, would love to get a cuprea. They absolutely amaze me, but right now they much too expensive here. Thank you again. 💚
Huh some ppl aren't a big fan?! No but everyone had their own opinion ofc😊 I LOVEEE Alocasia's! 😊 I have a black velvet, silver dragon, polly and the "normal" one like the "olifantsoor".
Thank you, me too! They're so pretty and can get so big!(Well some of them 😅) I have a few classes on here, most are via my yoga patreon for 3,50 a month you get access to all my full length classes 🙏🏻❤️
@@plantwithroos Have you seen a Black Coral? It’s my #1 fav plant in all of my collection. I would try and describe, but it wouldn’t do it justice. Let’s just say the leaves start as a small medium green, then turn a magical dark green/red/bronze. It constantly puts out leaves of all sizes, so you never have to fill in at the bottom. Merlot colored petioles AND ROOTS! She never stops giving. She’s a thirsty one.
1 year later and Im loving your video! I now have 4 types of Alocasias- theyre my newest plant addiction. Lol Im in the US, and have found that more and more are available here due to tissue cultures. I just picked up my Dragon Scale and Silver Dragon for $30 each! So happy!!! I also have a Nairobi Nights and Bambino Amazonica
Thanks for sharing your Alocasias! I always feel the need to comment when you show them off. My Dragon Scale is doing not so well, I think its going dormant. But my silver dragon is looking amazing. I dont get it... Also I'm in the US and dragon scale, azlanii, and silver dragon are all pretty widely available here but it hasnt changed the prices too much. Silver dragon usually goes for arounds 80 usd, dragon scale 90 usd, and the Azlanii can still sell for 150-200 usd. Also I hope my zebrina reticulata gets as big as your variegated zebrina :)
Oohhh interesting thanks for sharing! An experienced aroid grower friend told me that about tissue culture in the US so maybe that's not correct, or maybe the prices are just high cos they can be right now
@@plantwithroos I've never heard anyone say the azlanii was tc til now but it's believable. I keep thinking that my azlanii and the other azlaniis being sold recently don't really look like the azlaniis I used to see online. I do think humidity can help them grow easier but I successfully grow most of them in living room conditions. So it's not needed! Currently growing Frydek, ninja, watsoniana, zebrina. Oh if you're growing corms or small plants humidity does make it easier! In my terrarium they're doing really well. And this video is quite old, I need to make an updated one, I've moved most of them to semi hydro (see my recent plant chores video)
@@plantwithroos thanks for the reply! I try to group plants to improve humidity. I think overwatering is more of a problem with these plants! I’ll watch your semi hydro video with interest!
@@plantwithroos my alocasia I mentioned in my comment above now has a new leaf coming so fingers crossed! It just goes to show that you should never give up on them!
Hi Roos, I’ve found your channel (and Instagram) I think a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoy watching your videos, I find them entertaining and nice. I’m thinking about getting an Alocasia Cuprea, I’ve fell in love with that! Thanks to your advice, I’ll try to find her a good spot near the window 😉
They do get thirsty real quick! But if the plant consistently does only a certain amount of leaves, I would check the roots and maybe repot (maybe wait for spring) and try a good fertiliser to help it be able to sustain more leaves 🙌🏻
I agree all alocasia love to have a bright light... but silver drsgkn and dragon scale dont like a moist soil. . Black velvet Cuprea Pink dragon They dont care if always moist soil but they love moist environment. By the way my cuprea give me a 35cm long of leaf and 3month-old berries now and always excited when I can harvest the fruit
Like your videos and stuff I'm in the house plants in my wife's like a plant is a plant but you know I talked to her about the names and she she just rolls her eyes
Thank you for this video, great advice especially about the light! I had the alocasia wentii for a long time which actually grows fast in medium-bright light, so it took me ages to figure out that the rest of them need ALL THE LIGHT. Do you recommend removing babies from the mother plant? How long should I wait/do they need to be a certain size? My dragon scale has 4 babies so I should probably do something about them....
I waited until they had one leaf open and hardened, but that was just an experiment. You can also leave them in for a nice full plant - like my Frydek which is several plants! I took out my Cuprea babies cos there were 11 in that pot with the mama! 🤭 thank you lgl fertiliser 😬
I have no buildings across the street. But a type of mesh or a stained glass window may disperse the light rays enough to provide that kind of sunlight reduction, right?
I don't think anyone has TCed azlanii here, but I can confirm they are easily available for import as TC plugs from Singapore. They're still about ~$150
Hi from Mexico! New subscriber here 🫶🏻 I would love to know if you moisturize the leaves of your Alocacias with water too? I’ve seen people doing it but I’m not sure if that is a good idea 😕
Hey welcome! (I want to visit Mexico one day!) I don't spray them consistently, but if I'm spraying other things then I also spray them. So it's not bad but it's not necessary either 👌
Peace. The cuprea is new to my collection. Had my eye on one with more shiny leaves and got one with one😳. The other leaves are smaller & darker with curling. Should those leaves just be trimmed? Also, does it like to dry completely before watering again? Thanks. All feedback is welcome.
Congrats! One of my favourites. I never recommend to trim leaves as there are still mobile nutrients in them that the plant will take back once they die off. Wait will the leaves are brown or fully yellow. I let it dry a lot and that works well, but it also depends on where you put it. lots of light!
Finnaly got a Poly Alocasia put it in same window with my Bird of Paridise (comman) need to take my Christmas tree apart and pack it away. It is a taller stand but i don't think high enough so i might use a small stand on top of it so it sits higher then the AC. Til spring then they go outside if i find a new apt i can put them outside. This one has to much undesirable activity time to move
Thank you for this! In your experience, do they like being a bit rootbound or would they prefer not to be? I ask because I'm trying to get their leaves bigger and some plants produce bigger leaves when they are a bit rootbound and others don't.
Hmm I fine know, my zebrina grew roots out of the pot very quickly and I've repotted several times so I'd say they don't like to be rootbound. But then again they rot easily so don't go repotting all your plants right now haha! I'd wait for spring and till you see roots circling around the pot or growing out
What were the little packet tags at the bottom of some of the pots? I heard you say something about predatory bugs- is that them in the packs? If so, can you link something about where to purchase? Thanks
9:30 you said you had that plant on your window sill 🤔 which is it, window sill or middle of the room? I’m interested to know because I recently bought one and I’m looking for tips
Honestly, after your the other comments with accusations about my face and its expressions I don't really feel like answering this. You can't bash someone and then ask their help.
@@plantwithroos yeah, it probably sounds very weird if you don’t know what I’m talking about and I’m glad you don’t because it would probably put me off watching so I’m glad you don’t know what I’m talking about 👍🏽
This may seem like a silly question. Do the predatory mites stay in the pot you put them? I have several plants that seem to attract spider mites no matter what I do and I would love to to use predatory mites but I am worried they'll just get all over my apartment.
Hello, yellow and brown edges can mean many things. Have you seen my 'identifying pests' video? it can also just be fall/winter, alocasias are grown from a tuber (a bulb, like a tulip but different) and so they have the tendency to go into dormancy in winter and come back in spring.
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear it! Have you checked the roots/bulb? Try to just look and not disturb the roots especially if they look healthy. If they look healthy it might be dormancy, if they rotted well than we know as well 🤭
VERY important tip: because of guttation don't let the leaves of your alocasia touch a wall, a table or any soft surface. They can stain it.. A hard surface can be cleaned, a wallpaper can't and your sofa will be stained forever. Will have to paint a whole wall because of it.
That's intense! Do you mean the dripping from the leaves? I've never seen it stain anything here in the house, it seems to be just water drops. Sorry to hear it is different for you!
@@plantwithroos yes.. my Wall has light yellow stains from a big Alocasia calidora. those drops seems to fall on my dining table and stains it also but I can clean those. I found this info online: It’s mostly water, but there are a lot of other compounds as well: waterminerals & metals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and salt (sodium)sugars like glucose, galactosenutrients and amino acidsviruses, bacteria, fungi (dormant and active), depending on the host plantmicroscopic cell debris from nearby wounds on the plantproteins and compounds the plant uses to defend itself (antibacterial and antiviral)toxins and contaminants the plant seeks to expel.
I love your collection. They are all so beautiful. I can't decide which I like best. That Zebrina is stunning, and your Dragon Scale.😍 Love the bloopers.
The company I use mostly ships to the Netherlands because bugs don't survive very long in the mail. If you're close to here you can ask them but otherwise it's better to find a company near you.. Sorry! The one I use is www.entocare.nl
I love Alocasias, but i have one untagged who i just can't make happy, it looks always like it cab die and moment and i don't know what the Problem is. It lives under a grow Light, no pests and the other Alocasias around are doing very well...so i just live with my little ugly one
If it lives under a grow light it may have to do with it taking too much direct light or the growing bulb getting too hot and burning it. Try moving it farther from the light
@@SonOfGod0600 i tried that but then all leaves startet to die. Must say when i get the plant it already was in a Bad condition so mayve it just needs long to recover
Actually the best pronunciation of Latin is not ee-eye but ee-ee. Yes most English speaking people say ee-eye but that doesn't make it right 🤭😅 I made a video where an expert explains this more, check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/5biyNn7PdKs/v-deo.html (at 8:18).

Yes that works great! I have shade curtains for summer when the sun goes over the building
I don't think anyone has TCed azlanii here, but I can confirm they are easily available for import as TC plugs from Singapore. They're still about ~$150
Oh really! Thanks for sharing
I hope it works out for you!
Love this video!
Thank you!
I'd wait for spring and till you see roots circling around the pot or growing out
@@plantwithroos Thank you so much for the advice! Appreciate you!
I'm collecting Alocasias. In my country they get full sun on south window. :) anything less and they stale.
Oh cool! Yeah the light might be hard there in winter!
What were the little packet tags at the bottom of some of the pots? I heard you say something about predatory bugs- is that them in the packs? If so, can you link something about where to purchase? Thanks
Yes that's the predatory mites, I get them from a Dutch site do if you're in Europe, check entocare.nl
Where did you get your beneficial bugs from? I'm struggling to find some in Portugal 😣
I get them from a Dutch company but unfortunately they can't ship very far cos they're live bugs.
Good morning,im from Philippine i have my alocasia Zebrina but its small and one stem only, thanks for the info how to care, thanks❤
@@plantwithroos yeah, it probably sounds very weird if you don’t know what I’m talking about and I’m glad you don’t because it would probably put me off watching so I’m glad you don’t know what I’m talking about 👍🏽
Your silver dragon maybe its better to separate from zebrina and cuprea coz silver like to have drier soil like drsgon scale
Hello
What are you using to protect alocasia from spider meats ? I see like a bag in the soil
These are baggies of good bugs that attach bad bugs
Where to buy the predatory bugs? And when the finish the spider mites do they die? Or I’ll have bugs for ever??
I have a few videos about them - ua-cam.com/video/bw-9Kw5ERz4/v-deo.html
Where is that plant sweater from?😍 so cool!
Thank you! It's by my friend Jess, her site is www.fertiliserqueen.com
This may seem like a silly question. Do the predatory mites stay in the pot you put them? I have several plants that seem to attract spider mites no matter what I do and I would love to to use predatory mites but I am worried they'll just get all over my apartment.
Yes they can't fly, and walk mostly upwards into the plant. They can walk over from one plant to the next tho
Mine has yellow and brown edge too. What cause it and how to fix it? I’m super new to this
Hello, yellow and brown edges can mean many things. Have you seen my 'identifying pests' video? it can also just be fall/winter, alocasias are grown from a tuber (a bulb, like a tulip but different) and so they have the tendency to go into dormancy in winter and come back in spring.
Thank you for this video! My Alocasia Dragon scale, changed his leafs to yellow in a week. I really don't know what's happening. Any clue? :(
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear it! Have you checked the roots/bulb? Try to just look and not disturb the roots especially if they look healthy. If they look healthy it might be dormancy, if they rotted well than we know as well 🤭
@@plantwithroos Thank you beautiful! Thats what i'll do ! :*
I found this info online: It’s mostly water, but there are a lot of other compounds as well:
waterminerals & metals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron and salt (sodium)sugars like glucose, galactosenutrients and amino acidsviruses, bacteria, fungi (dormant and active), depending on the host plantmicroscopic cell debris from nearby wounds on the plantproteins and compounds the plant uses to defend itself (antibacterial and antiviral)toxins and contaminants the plant seeks to expel.
I love your collection. They are all so beautiful. I can't decide which I like best. That Zebrina is stunning, and your Dragon Scale.😍 Love the bloopers.
Thanks so much Kathi! Haha yeah since of them are 🔥 🔥 🔥 😅❤️ love you!
Your browning of your dragon scale it started in over watering without you knowing it. I MEAN dragon scale love a drier soil.
What's the name of the predator mites you mentioned (packets within the pots)
All info about these is on entocare.nl!
I live in us, Pacific northwest, alocasia I struggle with.
Yeah they're tricky
FINALLY!!!
Haha yay another Alocasia lover!
I couldn't find the predatory mite could you please share link for EU
The company I use mostly ships to the Netherlands because bugs don't survive very long in the mail. If you're close to here you can ask them but otherwise it's better to find a company near you.. Sorry! The one I use is www.entocare.nl
@@plantwithroos perfect thank you I live in NL too
I just missed it!
Awww haha no worries ❤️
The unvariegated alocasia zebrina is over $200 in the US.
What?!? Really?? I've not watched US shop tours in a while, wow that's crazy
@@plantwithroos I haven't even found the variegated one for any price. The sarien is available for about $25, $40 for a six inch pot.
💖
I didn’t think I like them but have 4 lol
Haha
If you want spider mites in your home, go grow alocasia.
Did you watch the video?
I have 10 different alocasias and have never had any spider mites. 🙂 (*knock on wood*)
Oh that's amazing!! I've had them but now that I use predatory mites it's not really a problem
I love Alocasias, but i have one untagged who i just can't make happy, it looks always like it cab die and moment and i don't know what the Problem is. It lives under a grow Light, no pests and the other Alocasias around are doing very well...so i just live with my little ugly one
Maybe it's close to a hot or cold place? Maybe needs humidity?
Oh haha that's sad! So strange, but interesting to figure out haha it's a puzzle
Pronounce it as Maxkowski-i, Azlani-i
Actually the best pronunciation of Latin is not ee-eye but ee-ee. Yes most English speaking people say ee-eye but that doesn't make it right 🤭😅 I made a video where an expert explains this more, check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/5biyNn7PdKs/v-deo.html (at 8:18).
Are you Dutch??
Jep!
Ik had eerst je video moeten afkijken, voordat ik een bericht stuurde. Later in de video vertellde je het😁.
Waar koop jij jouw Alocasia? In Nederland?
Oooooo that was a shock, why did you open your mouth like someone was about to put something in it after you sang ‘my alocasia collection’? Was it for the you know who viewers?
I'm not sure what's up, but my excited face and open mouth don't mean anything seggsual and I'm very confused as to why you would think it does, or that I would do it on purpose. This seems like a you-thing
@@plantwithroos that’s a good thing you don’t know what I’m talking about - nobody needs to know 😭😭😭 I need to purge it from my mind - it was a phase I went through and because I’ve got an obsessive mind set I got deep deep into it - as an autistic person I naturally research the life out of everything that takes my interest but that dark stuff benefits nobody, so that’s good 👍🏽 you don’t know what I’m talking about, thank god 🙏🏽 that SH1T makes it’s way back into my mind sometimes uninvited and my adhd brain doesn’t stop to think sometimes (most of the time 😭) but if you don’t know what I’m talking about then that is very good 😊
