Badass Metal Drumkit converted to E Drum

- I got sick of my overly complicated drum recording workflow, so I decided to convert my pretty big acoustic drumkit into a pretty big electronic drumkit.
Now I'm able to record the whole drumkit without microphones or preams just with a little MIDI to USB cable... awesome!
The intro song is:
Fake Smile Revolution - Ignorance

That snare sounds positively sexual
I THINK OVER ALL THE KIT SOUNDS GREAT ANYONE KNOW HOW WELL YOU CAN INTIGRATE ACOUSTIC CYMBALS INTO AN ELECTRONIC KIT AND MAYBE SOME FEEDBACK ON MICING I
Aaron Mccabe Hey buddy I think you should press that caps lock button so you don't sound like you're drunk and mad
i agree. ha kinda amazing.
Aaron Mccabe sounds like god cursed you to scream every time you speak.
@@jazzie634 for real he's yelling when we can hear him perfectly 🤣🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅
Mate that sounds bloody amazing, I'm impressed.
it does sound kickass huh beet! oh coul be coul be
I decided to convert my beloved drumkit into a fully featured electronic drumkit. As you might know, I used Superior Drummer Metal Foundry from Toontrack in nearly all my songs. But the recording and mixing process with the acoustic drumkit was way too complicated and took way too much time. I always needed to convert my microphone signals into MIDI with Drumtracker. This software has been discontinued so I needed to find another way to capture my tunes. With the help of two Roland TD-12 drum modules I'm now able to record my whole drumkit without any microphones or preamps just with one little MIDI/USB cable, that's pretty sick!
***** This is a great example of what is possible with acoustic kits!!
How loud is the kit acoustically now by itself? I really don't want to sell my acoustic kit if I don't need to but I can't use it now I have moved into a small apartment situation :/
Also was this quite costly?
Cheers dude!
Doesn't matter what video that you watch......No one ever answers this fucking question...they must be loud with very little difference
"Loud with very little difference" What a weird comment. Perhaps you should watch some of the videos comparing the sound volume of the various mesh heads. Many of them, are almost silent.
Here I'll dummy it down..." loud with very little difference between acoustic set and acoustic set with mesh heads"...how's that still weird? Maybe if you read the comment above mine that I was responding to, it may add some clarity.
FakeSmileRevolution I'm pretty sure that you only need 1 snare 1 base at least 3 toms 1 crash (maybe) 2 1 ride and 1 hi hat

Me: hey how much is this Sabian?
Employee: oh that's $850 right here

Goteem
If it only was that easy ;)
I can hear Glenn Fricker screaming...
The question is how much time you want to invest into drum recording and what results you get from it. Real drums suck at this dicipline compared to edrums. But he is basically right that real drums sound better if you have the time (and want to invest the time) to 100% polish the recording. Get 100% tone with 100% time investment or get 90% tone with 10% time investment... I choose the latter. Glenn polarizes, that is what runs his channel so he does something right there :) but he sometimes has (or pretends to have - I do not know) problems with other opinions ;)
I always say: "If it sounds great, you did something right!" (no matter what the tools were)
Yeah, but this still sounds fake. I get what you're saying, but the sounds still sound canned. Maybe in another 10 years...
But I will agree that the feel/response looks accurate, and obviously you're talented. So enjoy your baby!!
Well, the "fake" aspect is very subjective. I do not want to judge anybody and I am not an edrums fanboy (as I said, I like well mixed real drums and prefer the sound of them). But most of the guys disliking this video (I do not mean you personally) say it sounds fake and in the next minute they crank up their favourite As I Lay Dying or Chimaira album and everything they hear on those are fake triggered sample drums (which again I do not think is a bad thing at all, because it sounds great on metalcore songs). Sometimes it is hard to really discuss the topic. Most people see edrums as an unworthy replacement for real drums. And this is the point. I think edrums are a different kind of instrument next to real drums. You can do things with edrums you cannot do with real drums, how about that? Check out Thomas Lang's roland sessions, omg!
You see, it gets very complicated and frustrating at times by discussing such a wide topic in the comment section below a YT video. It sometimes feels like discussing religion. But your honest input is very appreciated :)
HI, I would say if you want the accuracy on say 32nd notes or faster the best product to track is the Aquarian Inhead to get the speed and accuracy. The toms sound good and the bass is good(sure I like more ring and boom) but the main thing. Real cymbals are the best. Have you thought about still using the real cymbals.
You make a couple of good points of using regarding "Good enough" sound vs the time spent for it. But still, at the end of day, something about a real kit, and properly micing it is what gives the true sound a drummer can make, and turn one into one of "The Greats". E-kits are best for demos. A non-drummer can easily get his point across to how he would want the drums to sound like with a programmed E-kit.
I appreciate the obsessive attention to detail that went into this setup.
im watching to this at least 3 times a day...can't get over it!
DUDE ive been thinking about doing this for the longest time this is awesome!!
Really nice phrasing and solid open timing and note values. Love the development of this lil piece as well. Great job man!
His dynamics are absolutely insane. Plus the fact that the kit is even able to pick up those subtleties is amazing as well. Wow.
I am late but thanks. People hate on dynamics of e-drums because they don't know shit about how to set them up correctly. That's the problem :)
Probably one of the best conversions I have seen on a real drum kit, if I had the money I would have taken your route, nice kit man, well done
That is hands down the best sound and dynamics of any E-kit video EVER. Should be too...you have all top of the line components. I'll bet you've spend much, much valuable time tweaking them too. Excellent time and playing as well, very good examples of what good drumming is. Best thing is...now you are done, and you can go make music. You are a lucky soul.
+Peter Vred Thx a lot! And yes, setup was > 20hrs... and I mean the software setup, not building the kit :)
Killer kit man. Im stoked to see more and more drummers getting into triggering the great sounding software! Recording is a breeze, non existent issues with volume, and best of all, your drums all sound fantastic! I use The Abbey Road series kits mostly with my playing, but there are loads of the Superior Drummer stuff I use as well. Sounds amazing both recording and playing live!
Amazing transformation! Sounds great
Great job with the new kit it sounds awesome!
Great job! You are a well disciplined player. Enjoyed watching/listening.
Best way of making music without the tedious part of mixing stuff for months... I like that too though, but I understand the concept! Well done!!
Well, not exactly right. The mixing part is maybe easier due to mic bleed configuration, but the basic mixing and tone shaping is the same because Superior Drummer ships with raw (unmixed) drum samples. You need the same tools and skill to get a nice and natural sounding tone for your mix.
I actually don't dislike e-drums. They have a place in the music world. For extreme metal, I prefer a triggered kick by far. I feel like the snares in Superior and Slate sound great. My only beef is with the cymbals. Once you start with 16th notes on them they show their true nature and sound fake. I'd would say the best would be to trigger the kicks and toms and mic acoustic cymbals. If you can mic the snare as well it's even better.
the problem of the entire discussion is the fact, that most people see edrums as some kind of unworthy replacement for real drums and totally ignore the immense advantages they offer in certain areas (but they obviously have disadvantages, too... but not necessarily the sound). the topic is so subjective that most discussions result in a massive flamewars. it is a bit tireing at times.
as for the cymbals: i know exactly waht you mean. you are talking about the fact that on most modules the sample of the cymbal gets restarted on every hit and just overlays the previous ones. that sounds very artificial. in superiour drummer though there is an algorithm you can even adjust that recognizes the current samples that are already playing and adjusts the attack of the following strike accordingly. that minimizes the flaw you mentioned. take a close listen to the cymbal rolls at the beginning of the song. you cannot get those out of a roland module (using the internal sounds).
sorry, i mean listen to the cymbal rolls of my song Architect of Lies at the beginning.... not in this video :)
It's the same tiring debate people have with analog vs digital. Nowadays plugins are so powerful and well made that even the pros can't tell the difference (ie: UAD plugins, Kemper, BIAS positive grid). I think some people just like the keep the romantic/nostalgic idea of a acoustic drum and analog gear or tape. By 16th notes I meant at a tempo above 230bpm. I've tried BFD, EZ drummer, Superior, Addictive, Slate. They all sound somewhat odd a this sort of speed. But then again, it probably fooled me on some album I like. A part of it is psychological.
haha, the fooling part made me smile. like most of the edrum haters... says: "sounds so artificial and programmed".... *turns up volume on favourite as i lay dying album*
FakeSmileRevolution Exactly! Drums on current heavy metal and hard rock albums are not real drums, at least not 100% anyway
Awesome kit, awesome playing!
Your kit looks and sounds awesome. I used to own a TD-9 full mesh and the feeling of those v-drums are just great... I can't imagine yours.
Unreal playing my man!
that snare and bass drum too are so smooth, independent, and responsive, that's awesome man! im a converted drummer to current guitarist, cuz my drums are in NJ im in FL.. sweet sound tho man, n good idea
This is amazing great work mate!
Cool Video man, Kit sounds sick!!!!!
this is one of the best sounding e-kits i have ever heard... and this vid was made 7 years ago!
You got some mad chops guy. Interesting kit.
excellent conversion !!
Fantastic sound
Sounds Great Man!!!!
I love it. The beat you play is awesome.
Loved the beat you played. Sick dude! :)
WOW, das war das beste Schlagzeug Solo, das ich bisher gehört hab!
Wow!! Awesome man
That ride cymbal sounds really badass
Amazing sound!
Amazing talent and kit...keep it going
lots of cymbals LOVE the snare
Perfect convertion my friend!!!!!You have the realistic size from acoustic kit with the flexibility of Edrums..!!!Great job...
sounds amazing! good job!
Dude you play like a monster!
You're kit is sick dude. Sounds great. Fucking love it. Thank you for posting this, now I know how to expand my kit going forward.
Amazing sound man, really good job, looks real, sounds real, very good job, keep up!
+Matias Laino Thx a lot!
MAN, this is SICK. I wish e-drum company make more things like this. it looks cool yet using the advantages of technology that let drummer make more music rather than tweaking hardware and stuff. NO more tuning. NO more cracked cymbals. NO more broken sticks. NO more head replacement. NO more complicated miking setup. I really dig modelling stuff. but it still heavy to haul around unlike the roland shell which is smaller than regular shell. good job man !
Awesome, this is the future. I love microphones and real drums and all but this type of setup saves so much time.
+Fredrik Johansson You got the point :)
The kit sounds great.
Impressive, congratulations and have fun !
Sounds fantastic!
That sounds amazing!
Did you just lay the electric pads over the drum shells? Probably the coolest drum kit hybrid I have ever seen. Nice work
no he replaced the head with a mesh head, then put a trigger (sensor) on the inside
Dream kit.🤘🤯
Great playing
Great Sound!!! perfect choice
brilliant!!! nice beats too....
love your kick drum work!!!
sick man looks like the futcher of drums to me. nice job lots of passion i can tell
I’m in the process of converting my acoustic kit now also. This is great. I also went with the drumtec mesh heads. They are the best I’ve found. Added some internal triggers, & I have a module made by Alesis to start, but will be upgrading to a 2BOX module eventually.
Damn. That sounds incredible. Edrum ?????? I'm sold.
These sound amazing. I wish I could have those
So cool man !!!
Holy hell bro, that sounds amazing. Noice, toit!
Extra love for "TOIT"!
That's like making an android out of human
that would be a cyborg i think.
TheRadrussian1 if u make human complete android then no but if half android then yes
No. A cyborg is a human turned into a robot. An android is a humanoid robot
Lieutenant Commander Data was a great man!
Никита Лубин, прив
(Yeah really)
That kick and snare 🤩
Omg man your a amazing drummer! I love your music so much do you
hell ya sounds awesome
Great info, you helped me with my conversion!
Amazing.. i like it
Im impressed!
This was awesome
Nice playing!!! I jammed with my guitar to it ;D
Love the amount of symbols this guys running. The range sounds sexy
That groove was so solid it was inspiring! Great work and great sounds
Excellent
Awesome. 👌
That's so cool, man! \m/
Muy bien LOGRADO......SALUTES FROM ATLANTA, GA ,USA.
Sounds great man.
of course it does, he's firing off samples that were prerecorded by someone else in a pro studio. the sound doesn't come from the drums, it comes from the software.
Lovely!!!!!!!
AWESOME!
Very good.
The snare is one of the best i've ever heard.
That incredible sound!❤
How far the electric age has come
first off bro love your channel and your music is awesome sir keep up the great work, ive got a question I've got ezdrummer 2 I'm trying to record the best sound possible for metal hard rock i don't have drums what should i buy electric drum or acoustic and what kind for not a lot money ?
awesome man. I am in the process of converting my acoustic kit as well. need a few more things. went the piezo route so need to get the cables and mounting hardware but honestly triggers looks like a lot less hassle.
Sick kit dude! Best edrum ever. Haha Congrats.
DUDE MIXING IS THE FUN PART!
I hate recording but I absolutely love mixing haha.
ESPECIALLY drums. The percussiveness definitely is a great way to learn to use a compressor, eh? 😜
Thats awesome
The buzz seems to be all around the mimic pro module, and justifiable so, it's a monster of a module. But what you've got going on here it every bit as incredible sounding, looking and playing!
wow man i really love that!
The sound is super awesome coz if I’m not wrong..he is using SD3 or EZD2 or AD2..etc...these are award winning authentic acoustic drum sounds that are precisely recorded at world class famous studios..welcome to the future🤘🏼
Thanks, that helps me a lot.
Cool, great sound...greets from mexico bro :D
Rock on man!
Absolutely sick conversion dude!
I've just recently embarked on my own "budget" conversion which includes:
90's era Mapex Mars Series shell pack (12"/16"/22") w/ Remo Silent Strokes & Ddrum Redshot triggers that I packed with furniture grade foam up to about 2-3 inches from the batter heads
An old Boom Theory Space Muffins 12"x 4" internal dual zone snare ($65 Reverb score!)
An old Roland TD-6V module
And Lemon brand cymbals
All going into EZD3/SSL Drums/Mikko Drums ect...
I also have an old Alesis Trigger I/O that I was using before the TD-6V laying around, and have been pondering about using it as an MIDI expansion into EZD3?
The basic Redshot kick trigger overall although has been less than ideal IMO.
Probably going to end up building my own internal for that one.
Great video tho my man!
Cheers!
I hate the ride sound.
so I'm not the only one?
Rinaldo Jonathan no, the ride sound sucks
no your not, even I don't like the ride
That was the bell I think
TrevorClark_37 yeah, he was playing the bell.
In one word 'AWESOME' !!
VERY GOOD!!!!
Nice kit
It`s really funny that most of the people in here who openly bash edrums are miking up their acoustic kits and then add heaviest sound processing until...... it`s sounds like an edrum again! Great job, guys, exactly my kind of humor......
most of the guys complaining about edrums don't know that FSR is an all-digital-project.... just because i wanted to... so there goes the context out of the window for a lot of comments in here :D
that's awesome
NICE!!
