Just to clarify one point and give some cultural context that may have been missed- the early scene with baby Miyabi picking up the sword is a formal antique practice/ceremony some Asian families do. A child is placed in a room with various implements relating to different professions such as an abacus, musical instruments and toy weapons, and the object the child chooses will be what the child is destined to be excel at. Everyone's watching specifically to see what she'll choose, and Miyabi here has picked up the sword. It's not "just" a casual choice that doesn't mean much to the mother and father - while the family members around are happy as a swordswoman would bring glory to the clan, Miyabi's mother and father do look somewhat conflicted about the choice their daughter has made. The various observations as always are very spot on! And thank you for eludicating on the variety of shots!
There's a scene in the old Lone Wolf and Cub manga that was similar. Before embarking on his assassin's road of revenge, Itto presents his baby son with a sword and a ball, intent on ending his son's life and burying him with his mother if he picked the ball, but he picked the sword, and so joined his father on the path of revenge.
TFW my son chose a gun IRL, he's been interested in guns since he was a toddler, and I've been trying to tell him for years that guns shouldn't be used to shoot bad guys but to protect innocents. PLEASE DON'T END UP LIKE MIYABI.
So the crystals are a corruption from Ethereals, the enemies in this trailer. They come from hollows, places that are heavily corrupted and expand over large areas. The tragedy where Miyabi’s mother dies is Hollow Zero, which was the biggest hollow and it expanded right in the middle of the city, Eridu. I think the corruption can turn people into Ethereals too, which would be why Miyabi’s mother would want to die and not become an Ethereal.
I’d say possibly that for the sword to recognize miyabi it needs to kill an ethereal or something. And the only sureway for miyabi to survive there is to use the sword hence i think why miyabi’s mom choose to sacrifice herself for her daughter safety.
My take is Miyabi's mother is not afraid of becoming an Ethereal but rather fearing she would hurt Miyabi as Ethereal. She knows Miyabi wouldnt be able to kill her mum transformed into Ethreal
The crystallization is a visual sign in the game that the person is sort of "infected" (for the people that doesn't play the game), they're going through a very painful phase of having something bursting out from the inside, replacing that person's head or heart, and that person completely turns into a zombie or a monster. A very gruesome and painful process, therefore it would be common sense to be put out of their misery before that transformation happens.
First off, I love your reaction- a lot of people just watch it once and don’t go too deep into it, but I really loved you going back and giving your thoughts on each moment, great analysis. Secondly, I just need to say- Miyabi is my favourite character, I’ve been saving my in-game currency for months waiting for her release, skipping all other characters. Considering how already attached to this character I am, and that I am a pretty sensitive person, you can imagine this short hit me like a truck.
So ZZZ takes place on a world where voided zones called Hollows started appearing. These hollows are distorted space where time and physics act wonky and people can easily become lost in them trying to escape. While inside hollows people and machines are corrupted by Ether and turned into monsters called Etherials. The world was unable to cope and slowly began to be eroded. Then the Void Hunters appeared. The Heroes of Eridu the last city of Humanity. The Void Hunters Pushed back the hollows, created new technology utilizing them and brought about peace. Miyabi is the next family successor to one of the void hunters known as the Sword Master. So her picking a sword as a baby as well as being a direct decedent had the extended family excited that a new Sword Master was born (her mother and father not so much as evident). Her mother did all she could do to keep Miyabi away from swords and especially the demon blade that the "Sword Master" wielded. When Miyabi closes her eyes we see the "Fall of Eridu" when Hollow Zero formed and engulfed the city. Miyabi and her mother were then trapped in the hollow. Her mother was succumbing to ether corruption while Miyabi has very high ether resistance. However she is a child and reflected in the sword we could see the Etherals likely former members of the house they were staying in approaching to attack them. The tears Miyabi shed activated the demon blade temporarily so we see its sealed and needs a catalyst to activate. A ritual to be performed. So her mother who was slowly turning into a monster to give her child a chance to live plunged the sword into herself to bath it in the blood of a direct descendant of the Sword Master which fully activated the Demon Blade.
We actually just recently got confirmation via in-game art that she does still have her left arm, not a prosthetic. While she is not mute, she is a woman of few words, and generally maintains a very stoic demeanor. Also I only just noticed that the ornament she wears in her hair is identical to the one her mother wore.
Also the sequence when she unleashes her Rage and grief killing the etherials has the same motif as the painting in the Hallway. The tremendous loss before the glory of the painting.
The crystals on her body are corruption, if she kept going she would turn into a monster just like the ones on the sword's reflection and end Miyabi, so she chose to end herself so Miyabi could be saved, this video clarifies that only the living can be turned into those monsters.
Not only living but any ai could also turn into monsters, it seems it needs some level of intelligence to turn into monster. And hollow can even grow this monsters, in game(in lore) people not shure how, but there were examples of same big monster appearing in different hollow after it was defeated in original hollow where it 1st time was created. And also monster reborn after some in it original hollow.
I love that you can point out in the last scene "she is not gonna smile" for the very fisrt time you watched. Because the typical trope would be when the cycle continue and the one who had experienced would smile, but not Miyabi. She had been damaged so much and you can clearly pick up the story telling details and understand that she is not that type, per said like Jingyuan from HSR (I am refer to the scene in his animated short film The Flash). Love your reaction, thanks for the detailed and in-depth analysis.
i find that visual where from reddish tails or flowers slowly dissipate and transition to the present symbolize her rage, anger, frustrated, and lost suppress inside her blade. A blade that cause her lost everything that cannot be undone but a blade that makes her a hero for everyone. What her mother said comes true and she begin to understand and realize when that kid said she want to be a hero like her. Seriously what a beautiful story.
Okay, so Miyabi's mother succumbed to the corruption caused when the hollow that swallowed the first Eridu erupted - her history with the MC is tied because the supposed instigator for said hollow was the mentor of Wise and Belle. The Hoshimi bloodline are ancestor to the "swordmaster" who was famous as one of the most powerful investigators of that generation (Void hunters) - and it was said that this was because of the Demon that resided within the blade that she used, the one that was passed down. A sword is a weapon meant for harm and for destruction, this back and forth narrative with her mother preventing her from ever touching a blade was the juxtaposition for what one would expect from such a prestigious namesake, she wanted her daughter to be free from this cycle of killing yet at the end it was fated. She fell to the corruption and had to teach her daughter the price of killing as well as passing down the power of the demon blade to her. Miyabi was good at everything she did, but her mother did not want her talents to aid such destruction.
Notice that the second time Miyabi’s mom tells her to close her eyes, not once does she close them of her own volition - throughout that scene she didn’t even blink.
One thing I'd like to add. As other commenters have said, the crystals on the mom were a symptom of corruption, and she would have turned into a monster and killed Miyabi if she wasn't killed. I LOVE that when she helped Miyabi level the sword for the killing blow, in the reflection you could see one ethereal come out of the flames and approach them. This may be a representation of the monster her mom was turning into. Also I hate how after her mom says, "I love you, always..." you can hear a whisper of "be free" right after it.
it's so interesting to me how they choose to animate her during rampage mode using the same colours and style like the red painting at the beginning, where her heads of her family fought.
To keep it simple, I believe this was one of the first hollow disasters and Miyabi’s mother was corrupted by ethereal matter, which will turn people into ethereal monsters devoid of all humanity. The crystal growth is the final stage before turning into a monster and her mother knew she had to die so she wouldn’t turn and attack her own daughter.
Hollow Zero happened there. That was the death of the old city, the birth of Hollow Zero, the loss of many, many lives including the main characters' teacher, who was blamed for the Hollow Zero event happening. So... at some point, Miyabi may need to come to terms with finding out that the woman responsible for the disaster that killed her mother is Wise's and Belle's teacher.
Im not sure if you've reacted to the lore teaser but it shows their ancestor, one of the people who contributed to humanities survival. And the sword and that role has been passed down through their family
your assumption on the transfer of power is a bit wrong. her mother didnt transfer any power to Miyabi. the power is from the sword which Miyabi activated with her tears, formally recognizing her as the owner. essentially, her mother is slowly turning into a monster because of the crystal. Miyabi is one the people that higher resistance so she wasnt affected just yet. her mother can no longer get Miyabi out by herself, decided to give Miyabi the sword as the only way for her to survive.
Eridu was the previous "big city" where she and her mom lived. Hollow Zero destroyed that city and the crystals are what happens to people inside of a hollow, they turn into monsters (Ethereals). She knows shes losing her Sanity and didnt want to become a monster so her mom choose to die while she was sane.
This is just me but as we can see Miyabi's father wasn't shown after the ceremony when Miyabi chose the sword. My thoughts about this was her mother killed him bc he's the current owner of the demon sword at that time. Momiyabi didn't want her to experience that shit that's why she's the one had to do it and she said that being a hero is pull of losses that can't be undone. We can also see in this trailer how Momiyabi prevent her from touching a real sword and we all know why then Eridu collapse and turned everyone into etherial including Momiyabi. She Know she needed to die bc they'll both die when she turn and as she says "this is the only way" she gave the sword to Miyabi and activated it (some kind of ritual) bc she sees the opportunity to pass the demon sword to Miyabi, awaken her power to protect herself and live on.

really emotional she has a new one out today

The only reason they stopped it was by creating a huge crater so that it had no matter to absorb

its confirmed that any living being can turn into an ethereal if it says in the hollow for too long
My take is Miyabi's mother is not afraid of becoming an Ethereal but rather fearing she would hurt Miyabi as Ethereal. She knows Miyabi wouldnt be able to kill her mum transformed into Ethreal

The screams at @09:33 and foward are so haunting it hurts. Anger, despair and rage combined into a destructive fox. She really is Zzz’s vergil.
Then we're is Zzz's Dante
The VA did a really good job capturing that moment. You can really feel it in your soul.
