With your knowledge and experience, you guys must be close to being world leader experts in shipping container building process (maybe with the exception of George Runkle). With a simpler faster design you guys can probably provide a solution for the upcoming exponential housing requirement in Starbase City, Texas.

What size material are you using for the reinforcement of the openings? Looks like a very good job.
I’m sure it’s been covered already in previous videos but I have to know why would you want to paint the containers black instead of a reflective color thank you very much for your answer. Why don’t you notch the headers into the uprights for even more strength?

Thank you!!! The color was more personal preference than anything. The weather is very mild where we are so it doesn’t affect the house too much. You could notch the headers into the vertical tubing. We already went above and beyond with our reinforcements though so that would just add one more step.

Can you talk a little bit why you guys didn’t use the twist locks that connects the containers when they are stacked on top of each other?
We’re the containers difficult to stack on top of each other without the twist locks?
We did use the twist locks to connect them vertically, and they will also be welded together once they are placed. This container is sitting on our “conversion station” lol. Once it’s ready to go, we will place it on the 2nd level of the house. The twist locks were extremely easy to use and it takes a second to place the containers and line everything up but it’s not at all difficult. 🙂
Nice work, looking good! I was wondering if you've had to reinforce the lower framing for any of your openings? It seems like removing a lot of the strength of the wall would also negatively impact the lower framing if it's not directly bearing on something below.
We reinforce the bottom C channel where the openings are, and add some shims where the containers will be stacked. Also the first level is supported by concrete piers every 10 ft 🙂
@@PacificPinesRanch Makes sense, what are you reinforcing the channel with? Welding a plate in to box it or something different?
Yes we welded a plate beneath the vertical tubing on the lower C channel. 🙂
You didn't grind away the 1/8 th of metal left from the cutouts. What tubing did you use to avoid the grinding?
If you're talking about the leftover corrugation, we did grind that down flush with the bottom c channel before we installed the tubing.
Great work! Thank you for the video. I’m just wondering how many man/woman hours does it take to cut and weld/reinforce one of those large cutouts for the sliding glass door?
In the future, will you do a cost video for all the materials and rental equipment? If not we totally understand.
On a side note, have you thought of using a a first person point of view (POV) while actually working (cutting, welding, measuring, grinding, explaining your rationale, etc). There is a famous channel mattbangswood who uses a camera strapped to his head like a headband while his actually doing the work. This POV video in normal speed (not time lapse) I believe is the secret to his successful channel. There are thousands of channels and videos of 3rd person construction videos in time lapse on UA-cam, but a POV in normal speed is unique. It feels like virtual reality when you watch his videos, you can hear all the sounds and his thoughts and see all the work in normal speed and you get a real sense of how much time and work these projects really take. He doesn’t do all POV in normal since those videos will be 8 hours long. For example he does a POV in normal speed when he works on the first window of the build, and the rest of the window work will be time lapse since you’ve already seen him build a window and seeing him build the next 100 windows in normal speed would be boring.

Sometimes I can do POV videos but it depends on what I’m doing. Welding and grinding will ruin the camera so that makes it a little difficult but I will keep that in mind for future videos! Thank you for the suggestion. 😊
I know pricing will vary by region but would you mind sharing your cost for your reinforcement framing? (2" x 6" tube stock?) Thanks for documenting and sharing your journey!
Of course! They vary based on market value but they range from $250-$300 for 20’
I’m just wondering, do you have to deal with city/county building codes and inspection? Did you guys have to hire a structural engineering firm to calculate whether the structure can handle seismic and wind loads in that area?

We get it from a nearby steel supplier 🙂

That cut-off tree trunk is not good, u should have taken all those bark off the cut-off trunk otherwise u going to have problems with woodworms, concrete Piller is better than the wood. Good luck plan well ahead and have Plan B ready too.
This container will sit on the 2nd level of the house when it’s done. This is a temporary working station to be able to paint the bottom, and work on it without being 20+ feet high, etc. Our foundation of the house is all concrete. :)
