I took a old coat cut the pin tab off hand sewn it onto the new jacket and it went into the box and haven't had a problem since. Works just fine. Its been over a year.
Blue Nile I just completely replaced the zipper with the zipper of an old jacket that I couldn't fit anymore that had the same size & colored zipper as the one on my broken coat. I was so proud of myself cuz it was the first zipper I had replaced (or even worked on)
StarrGaze-Lilly that's so awesome.. I have a $200 northface coat and the bottom heat seal ripped in half. A coat zipper should last at least 5 years imo. This one is just over 2 yrs old so I'm not happy. Next time I spend $200 on a coat, it will be another brand and I'm going right for the zipper to see if it's of decent quality.

Great info, I bought a new plain black hoodie for $40 at a military surplus. the zipper box eventually fell off and have been carrying this jacket around in hopes of a cheap quick fix...but epic fail lol. Once again very good info when you need it...thanks much!

While I agree that the box cannot likely be replaced without some effort or fix (like with a super strong glue), a replacement insertion pin can in fact be easily purchased, installed and crimped on the other side of the zipper (as long as the support material is intact, or repaired as needed).
I've had this problem with a jacket the box was missing at the bottom so you couldn't close it, the rest was fine, It was one with the 2 slides. I took the two slides off reversed one and slide it to the bottom to form the box, glued it in place with epoxy. The second one I put in normal from the top down. I cut the tab of the first one so you wouldn't be temped to pull on it and it works just fine. I think if the end that you mention is stamped on that it could be reinforced then use the same method. I've used this one for over a year and it works like new.

On an old jacket I had when I was pregnant, my roommate washed my jacket (which had a plastic zipper) and she threw it into the dryer WITH IT ZIPPED UP 😧 So it ended up melting and fuzing together lol It was the only jacket I could fit (and it was winter) so I just slipped it over my head and wore a scarf with it to keep my neck and top part of my chest warm

I worried about this problem before the plastic seal actually broke. Inspired by this video, I have soldered some pvc from some food packaging box on to the failing heat-fixed plastic to reinforce it. This looks good - we'll see how it wears. I so love this anorak, I don't want to lose it!
@@UCANZippersUSA How sweet of you to ask. It has split behind the pin - about 8mm long from the bottom. However, the anorak has press studs as well as the zip, and much of the time I just use those, to save the zipper. I can still do the zip up if it is really cold.
Hi, where do you purchase the heat seal tap? I have my son hoodies that need repair where the material comes apart in that area. If the material was stiff enough like shown in your video. I cane save his hoodies.
I believe that someone out in zipperland should be abl e to create a box/pin repair kit. The stiffening tape should be easy toadd if it can be made so it ca be ironed or glued on. I would like to add that I had a customer asking me to fix the box/pin that tore away from the tape and wanted me to fix it. I told him I was unable to do so. About a month later I ran into him and he told me his neighbor worked for a canvas repair shop (not a manufacturer, just a local 2 man operation). He told me his neighbor was able to add a new box/pin to the zipper. He said the man told him he could not get the smaller size, but had larger sized box/pins he would use for tents. He said it was slightly larger and he replaced it and it worked fine. I do not know if this will be a temporary repair or a permanent one? Is it possible that a small canvas shop could fix the box and pin on a zipper for a nominal fee? I do not know if they would have some sort of equipment they could use to secure it well that a home sewer or alteration shop would not have access to? I have told a few customers since to check first with the local shop and then if they could not repair the box/pin to have me replace the zipper. I do not want to tell my customers to do this first if it will only be a temp. fix. Better to spend their money on a new zipper.
About 99% of the time, fixes like the one you mentioned with the small canvas repair shop are temporary. I agree with you that if the fix is really a fix, it should be done right. When the pin and box come off and sometimes the cord is torn away, the zipper will never be 100% repaired back to original quality.

How about when the pins themselves are okay, but the heat seal tape starts to come off. I have a case where the tape tore at the pin ends, making the material below fray, and also another case where the tape is starting to peel off on the inner side (where it transitions to the fabric) probably due to the pulley rubbing over its edge. Is this kind of issue fixable?
shadow2XS I have the exact same issue with an expensive snowsuit!! Definitely would love a fix that could somehow seal the wiggly pin back onto the stiff tape. Two way zipper pull and slider works perfectly and would save me money finding a solution.
I have a jacket that has the pin and box attached but the fabric has separated from the pin. This seems to be a common problem and I have friends that bring me zippers like this all the time. Hi, if the metal insertion pin on a separating zipper is attached securely, but the heat seal tape next to it is lifting off of the zipper tape and fraying bit, does that affect the integrity of the zipper? If so, how can this be fixed?
Hmm I just watched a video on a lady adding in a right side pin from a diff jacket that only cost $10. So in other words, she bought a cheap used $10 jacket with matching zippers, cut off the pin & hard plastic material next to the pin & sewed it in place on the broken zipper & it looked like it worked just fine. So in my opinion,it does seem repairable after watching her fix a coat. I was researching on how to repair broken zippers cause my new $50 winter jacket from Menards was only a month old when the zipper broke from a minor accident that happened. I like to be challenged by fixing things that are hard to fix, so this is right up my alley. Lol No offense on your video, I just thought I'd let you know that it does seem repairable. I'm pretty sure that replacement zipper pins and stoppers are specifically designed to be clamped with hand pliers. Even if that weren't true, there's absolutely no way that a small manual press couldn't do the job with the right setup. Or even a hammer? It's not THAT hard to bend metal.
What if my Pin and Box are still on, but have worn down and don't lock anymore (the tiny nose broke)? Can I then still remove the pin and box and punch another on? Anyhow, subscribed because you actually talked about my problem.
***@UCAN Zippers USA - I DISAGREE IMPOSSIBLE? - As you know Apollo 13 crew worked remotely (with NASA engineers) to fabricate a makeshift CO2 box.*** I took your insight to the problem, thanks for that and brainstormed. I fixed my Walls Work jacket. All that was required was the pin in my case not the zipper. Used a new #8 block box and pin kit. Used JB Wells epoxy 2 parts kit , mixed small portion then applied to area where cord was to hold pin. After about 1-1/2 to 2 hours it is a putty consistency and was able to use a toothpick to form a ribbon cord on the now "flimsy jacket material." After 24 hours the area to house the pin was very very strong, rigid and hard! Had to fine-tune sand & shape minimally so metal pin slides on. Crimped with vice grip and needle nosed pliers. It works perfect and will last a LONG time. Shame on Walls work jackets while the jacket is very high quality the zipper pins are CHEAP. I should have done a tutorial video. Total cost epoxy $4.75 at Walmart and 2 zipper sets for $9.95 on Amazon :)
There is a clear tape-like material that has peeled off of the zipper fabric where it enters into the zipper heads. where the zipper pieces latch. I think this tape like material is there to help the zipper pin slide into the box. Any quick fix?
Is that little punch really the only thing holding the pin and box onto the heat tape? So if I just *happen* to already have a 1 ton arbor press, I can probably complete this repair? How much force is needed for that initial install?
Thanks for this :) But there is a different repair I don't see a video about in your playlist. This video is about when "one of these [insertion pin or box] have fallen off." Do you have one about when the fabric (zipper "tape" I guess it's called) has torn along some (most) of the length of the insertion pin? The pin is still attached at the end abutting the teeth (that is, opposite to the end that is inserted) but, being detached along much of its length, it is almost impossible to zip it. And there doesn't seem to be enough fabric on the pin side of the tear to sew it back together. But if the alternative to repairing is to remove the whole zipper and sew in a new one, couldn't you sew in (onto the existing zipper "tape") just a replacement pin (which seems a lot simpler)?
this took me a week to find out but I have a sweater with the little box it wouldn’t fit so I try to open the zipper thing up a little to make it fit and close it in but that didn’t work I didn’t know all you had to do go on the same side that the little box was at and on the top there’s a little thing they’ll let you zip it in

I'm in a situation where I have the slider and can slide the whole thing as normal, but the bottom stop is the missing part. So it's zip-able but doesn't have the seal. Does that match the example shown in this video? I will message you a picture of the zipper at its bottom as well to have better context.
I have a open zipper with just one tooth missing near the box. If I could move the box up about 2cm (1") the problem would be resolved. I guess that's not possible. Is there anyway to replace just one metal zipper tooth?
Question: On my zipper, at the very end, left side, the heat-tape material has worn away, so there is now a slice in that material, so my zipper won't connect there anymore to zip it up. Is there any way to fix that, without replacing the zipper? For example, would it help to put on more "heat-tape" to fill in the missing material or is it time to replace the zipper? Also..... When I went to "JoAnn Fabrics" about the only place around my town that sells stuff like that, I found they only sell "women zippers", (zippers that zip up on the left side) because I am a man my zipper zips up on the right side, they claim they never heard of a man zipper! I told the lady, look at my jacket, see how the zipper is on the right side, look at your zipper, see how its on the left side? The lady never noticed that before, and the only reason I know about this is because I took another jacket to a seamstress, and she put on a "women zipper" and I can't get the hang of it to zip the darn thing up or down! +Muriel Safroniuk I have the same problem, the pin is still attached but most of the fabric holding it to the tape has frayed away. The zipper still closes but it's obviously just a matter of time before the pin falls off. If I don't find a solution soon, I may try crazy gluing it back to the tape. I'm also tempted to stitch loops of thread around the pin to sew it back to the tape but that would depend on how much extra space there is for the slider to fit over the thread on top of the pins. I'm also thinking of just wrapping some clear magic tape over it as a temporary fix, perhaps after crazy gluing it. Currently, I'm just using the buttons on the coat to close the coat but I can see that on cold days, I may still have to zip it close. You'd figure that someone would make a replacement pin with wider tabs to bite onto more of the tape but I guess there would be no profit in that.
Zippers need an uninterrupted path for the slider to work. Sewing the pin/box on sounds like you’d need to wind the thread around either one of them. Thread is not very thick but it does get in the way and prevents the slider from functioning. Just like when some thread accidentally gets stuck in your zipper. The slider tends to jam. My experience - Having said that, I’ve experimented with a “bonding glue” (used Gear Aid seam grip + Waterproofing) to stabilize the early fraying near the pin. I used a toothpick as to not get any glue ON THE PIN. Again, my experience is that even a bit of glue too close to the pin or too thick on the “tape/zipper fabric” the slider doesn’t function normally and needs more force to work (which can cause more damage). I agree that temporary fixes can be made but I stand by the theory that if there is tape fraying, missing teeth, pins or boxes - fixes won’t last as long as if those pieces remain solid.
Don't give up on a fix. I have a winter boat cover that zips together, and the bottom box broke. I bought an assortment of zipper parts from Amazon (may 6 bucks), found a bottom box that fit snugly, removed the broken box pieces from the zipper, and superglued and crimped the new box on. The video makes it clear that this is not a permanent fix, and that might generally be true, but I only use the zipper once a year when I put the boat up.
The pin box should be fixed with industry second-glue if the fabric is still there. They sell replacable ones at Amazon so how do they fix those new ones ?
I have a double separarting waterproof jacket that the slider wont come off. The box and pin are still there but I cant get the jacket undone. Can you suggest how I can do this?
Another way the retainer box or bottom box can be broken is in the dryer, about a week ago one of my jackets had the slider and 2 teeth ripped off at the bottom above the box and in the process disfigured the heat tape trying to ripe off the retainer box

I finally searched now for help on whether I could repair the broken/fallen off pins on two jackets that otherwise are in great shape. One is from Nautica, the other a brand I hadn't bought before, but it is waterproof (gore-tex) and insulated. The latter was purchased for a reasonable price from a work uniform site. BUT the zipper didn't function smoothly and jammed, with the insertion pin pulling off. What a piece of junk on an otherwise good jacket. No wonder why the jacket was on clearance months later. ( I hardly ever purchase clothing sight unseen, and when I eyeball clothing in stores, it's the details that matter. If stitching is cheap and zippers are rough or choppy or sticking already, then the manufacturer cut corners in a bad way. Their loss; I won't buy it. ) Anyway, Thank You for posting the video and giving me the expert lowdown. The Nautica jacket can be donated; it does not have velcro as an option to seal the front. The work jacket does, so I will keep that.
Macht Nichts Sei Mann You can always have a seamstress sew in a complete new zipper. Not expensive at all. Fairly easy too. May could do it yourself ✌❤😄
I think that's a great idea. There just has to be a way to keep the cord stiff enough and the pin and box the correct size that it will still fit the slider. When our machines punch the pin and box down, it's also crimping it to the correct shape so it can fit the slider. Great starting idea, though.
I tried drilling holes through the Pin side and sew but then there's no room for the pin to enter the zipper due to the threads extra thickness. I also tried 2 part epoxy. It worked but on the 3rd insertion it fell off. That's because the inside of the pin/box is smooth. "IF" it were rough the epoxy will hold but again I don't think as long as OEM. More holes for the epoxy to grab the pin just makes the pin weak.
With the right tools I bet it can be done. I just looked at my zipper that I'm trying to fix and looks like crimp could be done with 1-2mm cold chisel and good hammer and a thick steel plate to hammer on. The question is where do i get a few replacement pins. Probably will take several tries to get it right. That and what do I use as a stiffener. I am thinking some kind of glue. Again will take a few tries to find the right one.

In my case the box thing came of my hoodie and it's quite difficult for me to put it in because the cloth or like whatever thing on the hoodie that you have to attach it is broader so the box doesn't slide in :(( does anyone know how it can be put back again?

I installed zipper upside down lol (facing lining) short of reinstalling can slider simply be removed and turned so pull faces up? I have aa zipper that still has the pin attached but it has ripped away from the edge and there is not enough material to sew it back together. It still zips up but it is difficult to get it to catch in the slider, plus it looks bad. Is there a fix for that?
I have the two way separating metal zipper, and both of the pins (or pin / box even though they're two pins) are fine. The problem is that I lost the bottom slider (broke). The top slider is fine and still closes the zipper if I hold the bottom. It says "Ideal 5 M" So I got two #5 sliders (YKK), hoping that would be an easy fix. But seems like the pin from the original zipper doesn't fit in the YKK sliders even though they're #5. aaaaaaaah. Lol. I just ordered 2 #7 and #8's to see if that will work. I also have a bunch of repair boxes and pins but I can see that will be a messy thing. Problem is that this jacket is quite expensive and the zipper is really sewn in there well, so changing the zipper will be expensive and might ruin the jacket. Any ideas?

I have a broken ‘box’ and it definitely can’t be repaired. I threw away the box and have to figure out how to do something like replace the entire zipper.
So I have this (very annoying) problem with the zipper of my jacket. The plastic end at the bottom of my zipper is slightly broken. You can see the fabric come through a bit. This makes it almost impossible to close it. The zipper has two sliders and is made of plastic. If you know any solutions I would be very grateful! Google isn't my friend with this one
Yes you can fix! The following worked for a two-way molded plastic zipper where the stop on the bottom pin wore down… After sliding the top and bottom slides onto the zipper and assuring the bottom pins are properly aligned, use a 1/16 inch drill bit to make a hole near the bottom of the plastic pin (making sure it is the one that had the original stop). Then stick a small piece of 16 gauge galvanized wire into the hole so it is flush with one side of the pin. Make sure the wire is slightly larger in diameter than the hole so it fits snuggly. Cut the other end of the wire almost flush with the other side of the pin. Use pliers to squeeze the wire from end to end; this will debur the ends of the wire and flatten them slightly so the wire does not come out of the pin. You should now be able to pull the bottom slide down over the pins but it should not slide off. Pull the top slide down to mate with the bottom slide and you should be able to pull the one side of the zipper up through the slides. VOILA!! :)
I had your idea as I was watching the video. There's a way to DIY what the machine is doing. Like with a drill bit. I like your wire idea. I saw the divots on the box and thought about a stitch through them. When he says unfixable, I think he means that it's a level above simply crimping the top stops. As far as long term goes, it all depends on the DIYer's ingenuity.
Comon. Those pins/box end stoppers can be crimped with a good crimper. The hardware is fragile. If they broke off in the first place, they were never crimped good by the machine factory right? I'd be more afraid of breaking the piece with an overzealous crimp. Maybe a non mechanically inclined individual with no skills and frail hands would have a problem. Like the other lady in the other video sewing in a new piece. Ya.
This is the only video on youtube I have ever disliked. You can buy replacement pins and zipper retaining boxes on ebay for less than $5 bucks and that would be a set of various sizes. If you are true professional don't take this guy's advice.
True professionals will use zipper machinery to punch on the pin and box. We do it here over and over again, millions of times over. You're absolutely right, you CAN buy pins and boxes on Ebay, but you won't get the same quality outcome using hand tools as you would with professional machines.
lol I constantly have customers whinging at me "why can't you just put new bottom pieces on?!" ... because I can't. The only things I can replace are the top stops and sliders!
Unfortunately, there are not any retail places that sell pins and boxes. They are produced to be assembled on machinery and not for the consumer to put on manually.

I worried about this problem before the plastic seal actually broke. Inspired by this video, I have soldered some pvc from some food packaging box on to the failing heat-fixed plastic to reinforce it. This looks good - we'll see how it wears. I so love this anorak, I don't want to lose it!

@@UCANZippersUSA How sweet of you to ask. It has split behind the pin - about 8mm long from the bottom. However, the anorak has press studs as well as the zip, and much of the time I just use those, to save the zipper. I can still do the zip up if it is really cold.

I believe that someone out in zipperland should be abl e to create a box/pin repair kit. The stiffening tape should be easy toadd if it can be made so it ca be ironed or glued on. I would like to add that I had a customer asking me to fix the box/pin that tore away from the tape and wanted me to fix it. I told him I was unable to do so. About a month later I ran into him and he told me his neighbor worked for a canvas repair shop (not a manufacturer, just a local 2 man operation). He told me his neighbor was able to add a new box/pin to the zipper. He said the man told him he could not get the smaller size, but had larger sized box/pins he would use for tents. He said it was slightly larger and he replaced it and it worked fine. I do not know if this will be a temporary repair or a permanent one? Is it possible that a small canvas shop could fix the box and pin on a zipper for a nominal fee? I do not know if they would have some sort of equipment they could use to secure it well that a home sewer or alteration shop would not have access to? I have told a few customers since to check first with the local shop and then if they could not repair the box/pin to have me replace the zipper. I do not want to tell my customers to do this first if it will only be a temp. fix. Better to spend their money on a new zipper.
About 99% of the time, fixes like the one you mentioned with the small canvas repair shop are temporary. I agree with you that if the fix is really a fix, it should be done right. When the pin and box come off and sometimes the cord is torn away, the zipper will never be 100% repaired back to original quality.

When the box falls off, sometimes I'd just sew in & out a big knot just so that the zipper doesn't go off the end. It seems to work.

How about when the pins themselves are okay, but the heat seal tape starts to come off. I have a case where the tape tore at the pin ends, making the material below fray, and also another case where the tape is starting to peel off on the inner side (where it transitions to the fabric) probably due to the pulley rubbing over its edge. Is this kind of issue fixable?
shadow2XS I have the exact same issue with an expensive snowsuit!! Definitely would love a fix that could somehow seal the wiggly pin back onto the stiff tape. Two way zipper pull and slider works perfectly and would save me money finding a solution.
I have a jacket that has the pin and box attached but the fabric has separated from the pin. This seems to be a common problem and I have friends that bring me zippers like this all the time. Hi, if the metal insertion pin on a separating zipper is attached securely, but the heat seal tape next to it is lifting off of the zipper tape and fraying bit, does that affect the integrity of the zipper? If so, how can this be fixed?
If the plastic gets curved on the pin that has to be pushed into the box - can u staple a piece of plastic to get it to slide into box?
Hmm I just watched a video on a lady adding in a right side pin from a diff jacket that only cost $10.
So in other words, she bought a cheap used $10 jacket with matching zippers, cut off the pin & hard plastic material next to the pin & sewed it in place on the broken zipper & it looked like it worked just fine.
So in my opinion,it does seem repairable after watching her fix a coat. I was researching on how to repair broken zippers cause my new $50 winter jacket from Menards was only a month old when the zipper broke from a minor accident that happened. I like to be challenged by fixing things that are hard to fix, so this is right up my alley. Lol

I'm pretty sure that replacement zipper pins and stoppers are specifically designed to be clamped with hand pliers. Even if that weren't true, there's absolutely no way that a small manual press couldn't do the job with the right setup. Or even a hammer? It's not THAT hard to bend metal.

***@UCAN Zippers USA - I DISAGREE IMPOSSIBLE? - As you know Apollo 13 crew worked remotely (with NASA engineers) to fabricate a makeshift CO2 box.*** I took your insight to the problem, thanks for that and brainstormed. I fixed my Walls Work jacket. All that was required was the pin in my case not the zipper. Used a new #8 block box and pin kit. Used JB Wells epoxy 2 parts kit , mixed small portion then applied to area where cord was to hold pin. After about 1-1/2 to 2 hours it is a putty consistency and was able to use a toothpick to form a ribbon cord on the now "flimsy jacket material." After 24 hours the area to house the pin was very very strong, rigid and hard! Had to fine-tune sand & shape minimally so metal pin slides on. Crimped with vice grip and needle nosed pliers. It works perfect and will last a LONG time. Shame on Walls work jackets while the jacket is very high quality the zipper pins are CHEAP. I should have done a tutorial video. Total cost epoxy $4.75 at Walmart and 2 zipper sets for $9.95 on Amazon :)
There is a clear tape-like material that has peeled off of the zipper fabric where it enters into the zipper heads. where the zipper pieces latch. I think this tape like material is there to help the zipper pin slide into the box. Any quick fix?
Is that little punch really the only thing holding the pin and box onto the heat tape? So if I just *happen* to already have a 1 ton arbor press, I can probably complete this repair? How much force is needed for that initial install?
I need the tape at the bottom as everything else is ok! the tape has come loose . Which keeps the slider from engaging.
Thanks for this :) But there is a different repair I don't see a video about in your playlist. This video is about when "one of these [insertion pin or box] have fallen off." Do you have one about when the fabric (zipper "tape" I guess it's called) has torn along some (most) of the length of the insertion pin? The pin is still attached at the end abutting the teeth (that is, opposite to the end that is inserted) but, being detached along much of its length, it is almost impossible to zip it. And there doesn't seem to be enough fabric on the pin side of the tear to sew it back together. But if the alternative to repairing is to remove the whole zipper and sew in a new one, couldn't you sew in (onto the existing zipper "tape") just a replacement pin (which seems a lot simpler)?
A full replacement of the zipper is easier. When the zipper tape has torn where the insertion pin was, it's function is damaged.

this took me a week to find out but I have a sweater with the little box it wouldn’t fit so I try to open the zipper thing up a little to make it fit and close it in but that didn’t work I didn’t know all you had to do go on the same side that the little box was at and on the top there’s a little thing they’ll let you zip it in

I'm in a situation where I have the slider and can slide the whole thing as normal, but the bottom stop is the missing part. So it's zip-able but doesn't have the seal. Does that match the example shown in this video? I will message you a picture of the zipper at its bottom as well to have better context.
I have a open zipper with just one tooth missing near the box. If I could move the box up about 2cm (1") the problem would be resolved. I guess that's not possible. Is there anyway to replace just one metal zipper tooth?

On my zipper, at the very end, left side, the heat-tape material has worn away, so there is now a slice in that material, so my zipper won't connect there anymore to zip it up.
Is there any way to fix that, without replacing the zipper?
For example, would it help to put on more "heat-tape" to fill in the missing material or is it time to replace the zipper?

When I went to "JoAnn Fabrics" about the only place around my town that sells stuff like that, I found they only sell "women zippers", (zippers that zip up on the left side) because I am a man my zipper zips up on the right side, they claim they never heard of a man zipper!
I told the lady, look at my jacket, see how the zipper is on the right side, look at your zipper, see how its on the left side?
The lady never noticed that before, and the only reason I know about this is because I took another jacket to a seamstress, and she put on a "women zipper" and I can't get the hang of it to zip the darn thing up or down!

Did anyone solve this issue...zipper tape has frayed away from the teeth so metal is attached but hangs loosely and you can't zip up coat.
+Muriel Safroniuk I have the same problem, the pin is still attached but most of the fabric holding it to the tape has frayed away. The zipper still closes but it's obviously just a matter of time before the pin falls off. If I don't find a solution soon, I may try crazy gluing it back to the tape. I'm also tempted to stitch loops of thread around the pin to sew it back to the tape but that would depend on how much extra space there is for the slider to fit over the thread on top of the pins. I'm also thinking of just wrapping some clear magic tape over it as a temporary fix, perhaps after crazy gluing it. Currently, I'm just using the buttons on the coat to close the coat but I can see that on cold days, I may still have to zip it close. You'd figure that someone would make a replacement pin with wider tabs to bite onto more of the tape but I guess there would be no profit in that.
Zippers need an uninterrupted path for the slider to work. Sewing the pin/box on sounds like you’d need to wind the thread around either one of them. Thread is not very thick but it does get in the way and prevents the slider from functioning. Just like when some thread accidentally gets stuck in your zipper. The slider tends to jam. My experience -
Having said that, I’ve experimented with a “bonding glue” (used Gear Aid seam grip + Waterproofing) to stabilize the early fraying near the pin. I used a toothpick as to not get any glue ON THE PIN. Again, my experience is that even a bit of glue too close to the pin or too thick on the “tape/zipper fabric” the slider doesn’t function normally and needs more force to work (which can cause more damage). I agree that temporary fixes can be made but I stand by the theory that if there is tape fraying, missing teeth, pins or boxes - fixes won’t last as long as if those pieces remain solid.
Don't give up on a fix. I have a winter boat cover that zips together, and the bottom box broke. I bought an assortment of zipper parts from Amazon (may 6 bucks), found a bottom box that fit snugly, removed the broken box pieces from the zipper, and superglued and crimped the new box on. The video makes it clear that this is not a permanent fix, and that might generally be true, but I only use the zipper once a year when I put the boat up.
The pin box should be fixed with industry second-glue if the fabric is still there.

Another way the retainer box or bottom box can be broken is in the dryer, about a week ago one of my jackets had the slider and 2 teeth ripped off at the bottom above the box and in the process disfigured the heat tape trying to ripe off the retainer box

I finally searched now for help on whether I could repair the broken/fallen off pins on two jackets that otherwise are in great shape. One is from Nautica, the other a brand I hadn't bought before, but it is waterproof (gore-tex) and insulated. The latter was purchased for a reasonable price from a work uniform site. BUT the zipper didn't function smoothly and jammed, with the insertion pin pulling off. What a piece of junk on an otherwise good jacket. No wonder why the jacket was on clearance months later.
( I hardly ever purchase clothing sight unseen, and when I eyeball clothing in stores, it's the details that matter. If stitching is cheap and zippers are rough or choppy or sticking already, then the manufacturer cut corners in a bad way. Their loss; I won't buy it. )
Anyway, Thank You for posting the video and giving me the expert lowdown. The Nautica jacket can be donated; it does not have velcro as an option to seal the front. The work jacket does, so I will keep that.

why not make a replacement pin and box with holes all of the way through that could be sewn on?
I think that's a great idea. There just has to be a way to keep the cord stiff enough and the pin and box the correct size that it will still fit the slider. When our machines punch the pin and box down, it's also crimping it to the correct shape so it can fit the slider. Great starting idea, though.
I tried drilling holes through the Pin side and sew but then there's no room for the pin to enter the zipper due to the threads extra thickness.
I also tried 2 part epoxy. It worked but on the 3rd insertion it fell off. That's because the inside of the pin/box is smooth. "IF" it were rough the epoxy will hold but again I don't think as long as OEM. More holes for the epoxy to grab the pin just makes the pin weak.
With the right tools I bet it can be done. I just looked at my zipper that I'm trying to fix and looks like crimp could be done with 1-2mm cold chisel and good hammer and a thick steel plate to hammer on. The question is where do i get a few replacement pins. Probably will take several tries to get it right. That and what do I use as a stiffener. I am thinking some kind of glue. Again will take a few tries to find the right one.

I installed zipper upside down lol (facing lining) short of reinstalling can slider simply be removed and turned so pull faces up? I have aa zipper that still has the pin attached but it has ripped away from the edge and there is not enough material to sew it back together. It still zips up but it is difficult to get it to catch in the slider, plus it looks bad. Is there a fix for that?
I have the two way separating metal zipper, and both of the pins (or pin / box even though they're two pins) are fine. The problem is that I lost the bottom slider (broke). The top slider is fine and still closes the zipper if I hold the bottom. It says "Ideal 5 M" So I got two #5 sliders (YKK), hoping that would be an easy fix. But seems like the pin from the original zipper doesn't fit in the YKK sliders even though they're #5. aaaaaaaah. Lol. I just ordered 2 #7 and #8's to see if that will work. I also have a bunch of repair boxes and pins but I can see that will be a messy thing. Problem is that this jacket is quite expensive and the zipper is really sewn in there well, so changing the zipper will be expensive and might ruin the jacket. Any ideas?

You can always use a stopper that is a larger gauge than you have, but not smaller or the slider will go right over it and not stop it.
Suggest people check out the UA-cam channel I Can't Afford That. They have zip problem fixes that haven't occurred to this guy.

Unfortunately not. The pin and box configuration from a one way to a two way are very different.
I have a broken ‘box’ and it definitely can’t be repaired. I threw away the box and have to figure out how to do something like replace the entire zipper.

Unfortunately there is no replacement pin and box sold. The reason is that we use machines to make the punch onto the zipper cord.

So I have this (very annoying) problem with the zipper of my jacket. The plastic end at the bottom of my zipper is slightly broken. You can see the fabric come through a bit. This makes it almost impossible to close it. The zipper has two sliders and is made of plastic. If you know any solutions I would be very grateful! Google isn't my friend with this one

The following worked for a two-way molded plastic zipper where the stop on the bottom pin wore down…
After sliding the top and bottom slides onto the zipper and assuring the bottom pins are properly aligned, use a 1/16 inch drill bit to make a hole near the bottom of the plastic pin (making sure it is the one that had the original stop). Then stick a small piece of 16 gauge galvanized wire into the hole so it is flush with one side of the pin. Make sure the wire is slightly larger in diameter than the hole so it fits snuggly. Cut the other end of the wire almost flush with the other side of the pin. Use pliers to squeeze the wire from end to end; this will debur the ends of the wire and flatten them slightly so the wire does not come out of the pin. You should now be able to pull the bottom slide down over the pins but it should not slide off. Pull the top slide down to mate with the bottom slide and you should be able to pull the one side of the zipper up through the slides. VOILA!! :)
I had your idea as I was watching the video. There's a way to DIY what the machine is doing. Like with a drill bit. I like your wire idea. I saw the divots on the box and thought about a stitch through them. When he says unfixable, I think he means that it's a level above simply crimping the top stops. As far as long term goes, it all depends on the DIYer's ingenuity.
Comon. Those pins/box end stoppers can be crimped with a good crimper. The hardware is fragile. If they broke off in the first place, they were never crimped good by the machine factory right? I'd be more afraid of breaking the piece with an overzealous crimp. Maybe a non mechanically inclined individual with no skills and frail hands would have a problem. Like the other lady in the other video sewing in a new piece. Ya.

This is the only video on youtube I have ever disliked. You can buy replacement pins and zipper retaining boxes on ebay for less than $5 bucks and that would be a set of various sizes. If you are true professional don't take this guy's advice.
True professionals will use zipper machinery to punch on the pin and box. We do it here over and over again, millions of times over. You're absolutely right, you CAN buy pins and boxes on Ebay, but you won't get the same quality outcome using hand tools as you would with professional machines.
