Sammy is 💯 % correct on all that Army draft stuff..I too was drafted in 1971, and went from being dropped off at the Federal building for all day processing & bussed directly to a basic training post. 16 weeks later I was in Vietnam, and then returned back home to hatred towards me being send into that war.

That seems like such a weird process. Were felons getting drafted as well?

@@jameskarins1717 They weren't getting drafted but were usually given the choice of jail or military service, and it was like that all the way up until 2006-around that time period-even a lot of GWOT veterans were felons given the choice of jailtime or military service. Once upon a time that wasn't too big of a problem, but I'm sure you can envision the problems that started happening when you're throwing *often violent* felons into a world of discipline & obedience and sometimes a chaotic war zone; got to the point where we started getting gang members from places like Compton/Chicago etc and shit bags in general, the gang bangers would come back from the war-or sometimes even finish basic training & just go AWOL-and apply those skills to the streets..

I volunteered in the Army and went to Vietnam, I was trained at Fort Jackson S.C Basic Training and Infantry training. Then went to Jump School at Ft .Benning Ga. when Sammy talks abt them yelling and screaming He ain't bullshitting when I got there I said What the fuck is this. I went to Vietnam in 1969 for 16 mos. After I got there some of Buddies were going home aft. 12 mos. I said Why do I have to stay longer the Lt. told me because I volunteered He said you should've got drafted then you could go home aft 12 mos. I said what a dumb fuck I am. I made it through , made some great friends. Some lived some died but the few of us left still keep in touch. I know it might sound like bullshit but we saw a lot of action every other day sometimes everyday. We tried to take care of each other the best we could. I have the utmost respect for anyone who served. Was I a little fucked up when I came back for sure but worked through it. I still have a little temper , not as bad as back then, sometimes walking away is the best thing , sometimes not. But what the fuck do I know. Good story Sammy brought back some memories.

Sammy's story about getting spit on at the airport was par for the course during the mid to late 60's through the mid 70's. It happened to me in San Francisco International Airport, two young women, who screamed at me, spit on me, and threw tomato juice on my uniform to signify blood. What disturbed me even more than that was all the "good citizens" who said they "supported the military" just turned their heads and kept on walking. Not one single person came to my defense. I was in the Air Force for over 31 years and whenever I think about that happening on the way to my first duty assignment it was like it happened yesterday.
