I'm 61 years old and have been training consistently for 40plus years in bodybuilding, powerlifting and Crossfit. I took Dianabol for 3 months in '85 and a 3 month cycle of tes and deca in '86 and began training during a time where the business model for a gym was to use the gym as a loss leader and actually make money selling roids. Here are several things I've learned in my fitness journey. Everything that you're saying is making the point that many of those athletes competing at the highest levels of Crossfit take PEDs. I find your statements that Crossfit athletes train using speed, heavy weight and high volume 25 hours a week naturally without their bodies breaking down over time being attributable to their resiliency, diet, and nutrition a hard sell. Steroids are tailor made for the kind of long hard training that Crossfit demands. And I've been around the block long enough to know that female athletes with huge traps and large blocky abs are rarely natural. Lastly, there are naturally big muscular people, there are naturally ripped people, but in my experience not a lot of big and ripped natural people. That being said, I still enjoy your channel and hit the like button to improve your algorithm results.

My reality was that 20 hours of hard training a week was unattainable for many years for me. I was broken and constantly in pain for my early years. I could only tolerate that much training towards the end of my career after I had put in the time to build up to it. That is why so many people burn out and quit in the first couple of years because it is hard to over come. Also why people probably turn to drugs becuase they are not patient enough to let 5-6 years pass and then be able to tolerate the volume.

Crossfit is a lot different to only bodybuilding or powerlifting. It is true that you can only do so much volume strength training in Bodybuilding before you reach "max effective volume/intensity".
But for (real) sports (bodybuilding isn't considered a sport) which have lots of other elements with cardio (VO2-max, lactate threshold etc), agility, explosiveness etc it is very well known that you gradually can build up a greater training tolerance over time.
Especially for the endurance component of crossfit (that is also integrated into it), this is true. In fact, there are protocols for specialised endurance athletes when they are in their junior years and transition into the elite seniors where they very carefully increase the volume and intensity by a certain percentage over time from week to week.
Variation also comes into play, of course. Something well known for triathletes which other endurance Athletes are beginning to take advantage of, to increase the effective volume (to not get injured). Cycling and Swimming, for example, take a lot less toll on the body than running and that is very much part of the less (non existant) high impact eccentric portions in Swimming and cycling compared to running.
The increase in volume over time is also something that is very known for elite gymnasts! (which can train 30 hours a week!). And chalistenics/gymnastic movements is also part of crossfit! Hmm, can you see a pattern evolving now?
If you watch the winter olympics there is now a very special athlete in speedskating named "Nils Van der Pohl" that, despite the dutch sounding name, actually is Swedish.
He has gradually built up an absolutely insane but very varied training volume over the years where he does stunts like 24 hours running sessions, bikes enormous mileages and when it's time to intensify he has an effective lactate training time (That is his time spent on extreme lactate levels, the "on time" of max intensity) is a total of 12 hours a week.
In interviews about why and how he can tolerate this type of training, he answers that he has "Trained himself to train this way". Both mentally and physically over time. He has carefully analysed himself and how he responds to training and what to do to up the volume.
Then he has done everything over the years (from a very young age) up until his olympic gold in the 5000 m which he almost certainly will make a double with the 10000 m (he has the world record in both 5k and 10k) in one of the most grueling and demanding sports of lactic acid torture that there is.
And he is part of the off-season unannounced testing protocol that every olympic athlete must take part in.

The Crossfit world is stuck in the same mentality as Bodybuilding in the 80's / 90's.. denial, denial and more denial whilst everyone with any experience in the fitness world knows exactly whats going on.
Just look at some of the women in Crossfit as an example, your trying to sell us on the idea that high volume aerobic training is responsible for the masculinization of their facial structure. There are so many dead give aways for anyone with any sort of experience in these areas.
Its time for the cross fit world to come out of the closet, its 2022 and people know whats going on in the world.

There have been too many individuals within CrossFit who have been caught out by drug tests to say that the sport is clean of PED usage. Trying to differentiate who is and isn’t using is hard as the human body can build impressive physiques at the upper end of genetics and considering the is maybe 40-50 “top” level cross fitters then there is likely chance that these individuals are less likely to be enhanced. As for yourself I’m not overly bothered, you’re not competing anymore and you offer fantastic knowledge to help people live healthy, fit lifestyles.

First of all, thank you for your honesty, and life experience, about sports and Crossfit. But it's really hard to believe, especially on the women's side, that Crossfit Athletes are not using PED's (SARMS and/or Steroids). Of course genetics, hard work, elite training and diet, will make a great difference. But taking those substances, boost your total performance dramatically. Not only physically, but mentally too. Confidence in yourself is almost everything in Elite Sports. You have to believe 200%, that you got the power to make it to the top. Period. And we all know that Crossfit has a pretty dubious test program. They even warn the athletes of the day, when they're going for a test. Nowadays, most people are understanding that passing a drug test, does not mean your're not using it. I really do believe in your words, but you can only speak for yourself. In local competitions, here in Brazil, and in near countries, almost all the guys and girls are FULL ON jacked substances. It's very sad and heartbreaking for those who try to complete honestly. The mentality has changed a lot, since the early years of Crossfit Competition.

However I think you also have great genetics. I just don’t think the average person could recover from the crazy workouts and hours per day you put in at the gym. Although I also credit you for the dedication and hard work on diet, rest, etc. That piece is difficult and most don’t stick to it. So big respect there. So many people would come into the gym and said that they didn't want to get too big, I always said " don't worry you won't get big". It takes too much dedication for most people. The amount of food required would be 3 times their current diet, people don't realize how hard it is to eat that much. They also are not going to go to the point of almost passing out or the pain of going to complete exhaustion. For years on end!

I highly respect your level of athleticism and your dedication to hard work and effort. With that, you can achieve the same level of athleticism as most other physically demanding sports like NFL, as you pointed out. However, it is good to take note that there will always be genetic outliers in any sports, and I believe that you are one of them in the Crossfit world.
I respectfully disagree that Crossfit can achieve an amazing physique for those who are chasing aesthetics, especially for majority of the population who only has 30-45 mins to train for say 3 days a week. I've seen this in majority of the recreational crossfit lifters throughout my country. This is because they do not offer the best hypertrophy stimulus and loading on muscle groups as compared to other exercises. On the second point which you mentioned eccentric demand, Crossfit actually doesn't have that much because you'll notice that there is as little focus (e.g. All the olympic lifts really don't focus on eccentric but rather concentric, similar with kipping pull ups with little time under tension). From my experience and researching on all of why hypertrophy can occur, my hypothesis is due to the volume of an elite athlete, which makes up for the lack of eccentric loading, and cannot be achieved unless you are 1) a genetic outlier, or 2) have tons of time to train and eat like an athlete.
Like they always say, train for your goals. If your goal is to be a CrossFit athlete, train like a crossfit athlete, and if your goal is to be as aesthetic as possible, train like a bodybuilder. Nutrition is always a given - if you can't pair your training with nutrition whatever you do will always see subpar results.
That said, great content, and I love how transparent you are. Keep it up!

Seventeen of them failed for GW1516 in the span of three days from a single event with less than 150 female participants and those are only the ones that got caught. Hi Mark Filly and friends. I have heard just too many nutritional and medical doctors, who have said that it is IMPOSSIBLE for Cross Fitters, to be totally clean of PEDs and steroids, considering the insane amounts of the work-outs that they do.
And, as a 69 year old straight male, who has been training in the sports of bodybuilding and in many martial arts for the last 52 years, without stopping for a long time, I cannot believe that the Cross Fitters are mostly clean.
Yes, I can believe Marcus not using PEDs. But his not having used steroids, especially when he was competing in the Games? Just maybe, for Mark seems so honest and thorough, in his stories of how he was able to get his awesome physique and his fitness level.
I really admire and love you Mr. Filly, for what you are doing now for functional fitness. And know that I have been a subscriber of your channel, for quite some time, now.
However, it is hard for you to be indirectly "defending" the Cross fitters who might have been using them, for you really have no way of knowing that accurately.
Also, one only needs to honestly look at 97% of the females, for example, who have insane amounts of muscle mass, which cannot possibly be naturally obtained from mere genetic advantages, great nutrition, intense work outs, and almost perfect recovery routines. Just not natural for humans to be that muscular and fit, especially for the female competitors, including the really elite ones.
Having stated my HUMBLE opinion, I wish to thank you Mark for the really great informative videos that you post. More power to you.

You say More volume, More Reps, More Sets, Higher Frequency, Longer duration is what high level Crossfitters do to get their strength and physiques. They obviously do A Lot of exercise. But all those things are only part of the equation.
Recovery is a big part of the equation also.
By the ‘More Is Better’ way of thinking, the more hours of exercise A person does, the better results they should get. Speaking of the Natural athletes of course.
I fell for that ‘More is better’ approach in the early and latter 80’s when I read, and applied Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s encyclopedia of bodybuilding (and many other gurus of the day). I was working out hours every day, 6 to 7 days a week and even on holidays because I was afraid of losing gains, and or missing out on gains, and here’s what I noticed.
Always fatigued and tired, sick with colds and flu multiple times per year, sustained many injuries along the way, and muscle soreness was just a way of life every day.
One thing I wish I knew back then, was that Arnold Schwarzenegger and all these other high level Bodybuilders and athletes were taking PED’s.
It wasn’t till later that things started to come out and the truth was revealed about much of this artificial enhancement stuff.
Once I realized it, and realized I cannot sustain this way of working out / exercise for life.
I changed everything and cut way, way, back on volume, exercises, frequency etc. The only thing that remained high was the intensity level of the exercise.
I grew stronger and bigger by doing less, up to a point of course.
Every person has a ceiling somewhere along the way. Finding that sweet spot of doing just enough to get results and not too much to annihilate your body, skeleton, joints, tendons, ligaments, and lifestyle is key.
    More Is Not better.
An example of recuperation - how about trying to build calluses on your hands. Every time a person gets a little friction on their hands they start to build a callus, then, if before the callus is fully formed and gradually built up, they do something to tear the calluses off, then do the same thing, which tore the calluses off, on a daily basis, with high frequency, and high volume, they will never have a callus.
I can say from firsthand experience that this approach does not work.
All you’ll have is hands without calluses and instead constant open wounds and abrasions.
    Why?
Because there was never enough time to recuperate from the tearing down process and allow rebuilding to commence.
These artificial enhancement drugs allow for faster recovery, amongst other things, which allows for the ability to do more volume, more frequency at a longer duration and higher intensity.
PED’s need to be talked about much more (with transparency and integrity) when it comes to these subjects because they are the missing link between these so-called elites and the average non-elite, but highly capable athletic individual.
I don’t see that full transparency happening much anytime soon.
Instead, I have seen, and will continue to see, people like my younger self who think that these elite athletes are natural and will try to follow what they do to their demise.

Generally agree with all points. I think what you see at the highest level of CF is the people with top genetic potential coupled with incredible training and diet. However, if you think there isn't PED use, then you're naive. The farther you get along the bell curve of performance the more difficult it is to make progress. This is where PED's are actually valuable. If you're an average athlete, then PED's will make you a better, but likely, still average athlete. If you're an elite athlete, and PED hyper-responder, then it may make the difference in moving from simply competing to pushing for the podium.
I generally agree with Marcus that it does take most people several years to build the type of physique common to elite CF athletes, but how do we explain the fact that there are lots of young athletes that already have crazy physiques (teenager Mal O'Brien, and CF champ Justin Medeiros)? I'm not suggesting they are on PED's at all, just asking. Seems like there are a ton of great 17-25yr old athletes already with freak physiques.

You sound like you did not watch or paid attention to the whole video, he never said that there is not any PEDs usage, he said the opposite actually, he said there are people who use or have used PEDs in this sport, but he is confident that there are a lot o pro people that aren't or haven't. It is very easy for people who aren't training the in the same level as them say they are on PEDs , but these people don't understand what is like to have the top trainings, nutrition, rest etc. Some athletes show clear sign of PEDs like masculin traces and so on (like Pearce, Sigmundsdottir etc) but they are probably from the time when these athletes were professional bodybuilders (these two were in the past), since pro crossfiters must do drug test before and during competition.

I am around PED circles. They really underestimate the concept of genetics and how physiques respond to steroids and where performance enhancement fits in to the equation. Diet+ training equal results. Even in PED circles some people believe others lie about their dose and say impossible to peoples before photos before taking a cycle. I went to Bergen catholic. Everyone used steroids. Very few got anywhere with it.
A lot of the CrossFit athletes were just that high level athletes. Not just people who paid $35 a month to LA or Golds. A lot were D1 athletes and Tia is an Olympic athlete; a gold medalists if I am not mistaken. Regardless of what’s is and is not going on behind the scenes. Doing things correctly and having the genetic blueprint is more important than steroids.
There’s a ceiling to the doses and results. The top steroid users (bodybuilders and powerlifters) will tell you that. And cross fitters are very limited to what they can use. There’s just Lower to medium Test, low doses of Nandrolone, EQ, EPO, halotestin, Anavar, and Winstrol. They can’t allow themselves to get a pump easily. So you could do the same but still wouldn’t look like them.

Thanks, Marcus to put things in perspective.

I did watch the whole video, and though I'm not a crossfit guy I did participate clean in high level athletics (top in my sport/weight class at a state level) in my younger days. I also lifted (mainly PL style workouts), ran, biked and swam during that period for performance and to maintain weight. The point about many folks not understanding what goes into competing at a high level and the buildup to it is a strong one. No one pops out of the womb looking like this and even those that put in the work at a SOME level get selected out by genetics. I think it's obvious that a sport which is heavily weightlifting/strength biased along with max intervals will lend itself towards a certain body type. Big enough to put up big numbers in lifts but lean and fit enough to not gas in the strength/endurance events. And the workouts, diet and recovery required to perform at those events will also play into that look. I also think people tie PEDS to looks in too simplistic a fashion. Looks often don't equate to use and you might be surprised if you train with people who is and isn't. I'm not in any position to say people in CF do or don't use and which is which but it's great to get perspective from a former high level competitor.

I have rowed for 42 years and coached rowing for 5. Through the years I have known many athletes who have developed large quads and thick backs with no supplemental work just rowing alone. From observation I would say most rowers even world class rowers are far less loaded rowing using much smaller drag factors on the C2 machine than most cross fitters or gym goers. Yet a trained rower's power numbers will match or exceed the strongest weight lifters. Rowers are unloaded on the eccentric and yet are fairly strong. So if a rower who is less loaded and does little eccentric work can develop big muscles I would bet some cross fit athletes could build considerable whole body size naturally.

I would agree with Marcus that its technically possible for the genetically gifted to look like that and perform so well in so many different modalities. There are freaks in every sport. Having said that there seems to be more and more genetically gifted athletes coming out if the woodwork year after year which is unusual and the fact that an awfully high concentration of these people appear at the top of crossfit is statistically highly unlikely. I love crossfit both doing and spectating, im a big fan but i as the sport gets bigger and the athletes get better so quickly i find the gifted and dedicated argument less and less convincing. I disagree with nothing Marcus said, he's talking about his own career and good luck to him. One element of the video he mentioned was the volume of training. Ive seen that volume first hand day after day, anyone can look at a sample day of Mayhem programming. That kind of volume is brutal and murder on the body, 25 hours a week month after month year after year. How can these athletes recover from pounding their legs lungs and shoulders into the ground so much? Im not buying the ice bath, good food and sleep response. Yes, for some it will work. For most that volume is unsustainable and yet they cope and don't break down. People forget that steroids don't grow muscle as such they accelerate recovery to facilitate hard and intense training the next day. Without steroids how are these athletes destroying their muscles and frying their cns to such a frequent degree and recovering to go hard for another 5 hours the next day? I want to believe in Batman but there's only 1 batman. With so many superhuman athletes about, something is shady in Gotham. Discuss 🤔

    • @cameroncollier8062
      @cameroncollier8062 2 роки тому +1

Well as Marcus said many of these top athletes already have ten plus years experience of fitness before the CrossFit grind. So you could argue that they have adaptations that have made their connective tissues more resilient to degradation. Also he mentioned that training wasn’t just focused on hitting PRs or heavy lifts day in and day out and that they would focus heavily on technique. I would wager these athletes implement wave load training as to avoid over training such that they taper up and down volume and intensity in accordance to regional competitions. Ultra marathon runners only do one long 30 plus run per week and focus on other training modalities on the other days. They also taper down training a month before competition. So I would wager CrossFit athletes do one grueling day a week. Also training splits to balance out the work load so that you are giving some parts of the body to recover while training another portion is another explanation. That said I’m sure PED use is still common especially since CrossFit isn’t that regulated.

    • @marcusfilly
      @marcusfilly  2 роки тому +2

the kind of volume is murder. It felt like that too from 2010-2014. I really got my ass kicked and wasn't very successful. But in year 2015, after 6 years of adapting to the sport, my ability to handle the volume finally started to catch up to the demands of the sport. I was able to train more and still stay smart and injury free. IT was in 2015 that my growth took it's last jump and I was able to have a breakout year in 2016 when I finished 12th. I just takes time.
A lot of athletes aren't patient enough to see those years of development happen.

Its interesting what you wrote, bit of a catch 22 isn't it? If you don't suffer the volume you can't adapt, but if you don't adapt you'll be broken. Likewise if you don't do the volume you won't be at the races at all! The athletes at the top of the competitive structure are one thing, its the ones at the bottom that really suffer i think. Good enough to win local competitions and stand out from the norm. They do well in the open compared to most without being truly competitive even while training as much as those who dominate the open. They're constantly chasing and thinking if they tweak this or that, or sacrifice more or just do more it will make the difference but for the majority it won't, they just don't have it. Realistically if anyone would be tempted to use peds it would be people in that bracket desperate to step up the ladder and give all their years of labour some meaning!

It’s just like all sorts of other things whether it be sports or anything else. Do people really expect it’s only the slightly lesser known people just short of the top that are doing it and get popped? Do you really expect women to gain masculine feature (obvious thing being changes to structure like facial structure)? Do you really think people don’t know it’s nearly impossible to be THAT lean all the time (because they always have their instagrams and stuff even though obviously editing goes into that), yet have enough surplus to make large strides in strength gains? Do people think that people don’t know that PEDs are not just strength and muscle based? Do people think (in other sports) that top athletes (looking at Lasha for example, who I love watching lift still) get popped and they just stopped taking them as his totals have still skyrocketed? Do people still think that people just eat chicken, rice and broccoli bruh? Do you think that after Project MK Ultra declassification showed they were able to control dogs with chips in their brains way back in the 70s or so they just stopped furthering that technology?
I think people get the point. It’s like the world just thinks everyone (and many people are so I understand that) are just gullible suckers that if you say “SQUIRREL” they’re going to look that way and follow it. Doesn’t matter how many decades (probably a century at this point) of endless documentation, research and tests on performance, diet, human limits (connective tissues and all the rest), PEDs and what ever else somehow doesn’t apply to CrossFitters because they are “that special” and their training methodology is “that superior.”

On thing which got my eye was study done by elite level crosscountry skiers. Bio-opsies were done to their quads and triceps. What was found was that their Triceps had HUGE type IIA fibers. What made them huge was capillar density. Type IIA fibers were larger than Type I fibers, and to get similar aerobic capacity they had to grow similar capillar density. which resulted them to be some 1,5 times larger than Type I fibers.
In quads this was not observed and there was very little difference between Type I and Type IIA fibers. But this was supposely because doublepolling technique requires alot from triceps, both in strength and in endurance. Quads have just to be aerobic and so type IIA fibers defeveloped more into direction of Type I fibers (Glute would have been more interesting muscle to study as the power house of lower body).
Basically same what Crossfitters need, thou crossfitters need that in their whole body.
this is something which drives me nuts with strength growd. For decades thay have been telling themselves that you can't have cardio and strength in same pudding, and it's so difficult to get them out of that space.
I'm not crossfitter, and don't believe for a second for top crossfitters to be drug-free (there might be some), but i hate it when people with zero experience come in and judge what is possible and what is not. Strength atheltes in general are lazy and lack work ethic, their idea of training is so narrow that they can't fit it into their heads how someone could train 20 hours without breaking into pieces.

I am pretty unaware of what is going on in the world of PEDs because I was just an average Joe who trained people to work out, rest when their bodies needed recovery and adopt good sleep and nutrition habits. I am a big believer that it is not abnormal that over time the human body will see huge transformations when people consistently live that lifestyle and prioritize their goals. What is abnormal is the simple dedication. I saw housewives and guys with dad bods train and eat clean and get really fit bodies with abs inside of 6 months. I never reached the level of dedication @marcusfilly invested in the sport so I cannot say that because his results were superior to mine, he must have been on something or he's a cheater. That is a cop-out. Also, the documentation of your journey is proof that you have worked really hard and even though you are lighter now, you are leaner. So I see no reason to call you out. You are doing a great job and thanks for all that you do. Keep it up!

First of all. I am big fan of yours, really enjoy your workouts and podcast in particular.
The points raised here are valid and of course, the Crossfit Games athletes are elite-level athletes. The things they do are crazy and very impressive. But like the Olympics, PEDs are the norm not the exception.
    - why, if you have a chance to be elite level and are doing everything (training, nutrition, sleep, mobility etc etc) would you not do EVERYTHING you can?
    - the intensity is crazy and PEDs assist greatly with recovery which high-level athletes need. Especially athletes that are taxing their CNS so much.
    - the physiques give it away too. Traps for days. Where there are a lot of anabolic receptors. The women in particular, there's some suspect deep voices sprinkled in there too.
Looks are an ambiguous way to judge drug use so my main argument is on the intensity and recovery aspect. The type of training and it's extreme duration make GF games athletes poster athletes for drugs due to their profound effect on recovery.
I am still a huge fan of CF and find what the elite level athletes do extremely impressive and I really don't care that most of them are on drugs. Its just the whole Crossfit Community being such loyal followers to the sport that they are blinded by the propoganda and refuse to believe that these guys and girls could be on the special sawce

Check out the traps and deltoids, these are the first 2 indicators as they are more receptive- they will be overly large. Next, if a person has large full muscles and a low bodyfat %. Just look at the exercises they are performing, back to back continuous exercises are endurance protocols. Olympic weightlifting has a super short duration per lift. Fast recovery is also a huge benefit. Now I don't really care if they are taking or natty- I do care when they try to waterboard you to believe that they are natural. Props to you though for going through all your points and not cracking up.

Exactly. And the argument of the top athletes being the ones that are resilient enough to endure it doesn't make much sense.
These top 50/top 100 CF athletes are the top tier elite, they have the genetics, the mental strength *AND* PED's. By mere logic, if you manage to compete with top tier athletes that are absolute specimens and are on PED's, what does that make you? The only one chosen by god to defy all kinds of human limits? Fair enough, now multiply it by all the others who also claim natty.

I can’t understand some of the comments on here 🤔
Marcus just offered a detailed explanation as to why CF athlete’s have such bodies, then said the average person is not going to train to that level. So don’t compare what you can do and say they are jacked, just because the nay sayers all think it’s not achievable, and therefore you can’t achieve it without being on something. No appreciation for all the hours, days and years they put in, and their simple retort and negativity is more lame and without any proof! No mention that the athletes get random drug tested tested and is mandatory for the top 5. You only have to note, those that got found out and thrown out this year before the games. You will make what you want out of comments if your belief is fixed and negative. Good luck getting on in this world with such an attitude.
Well done Marcus for facing this head on. Those that practice, CF know how difficult it is and the appreciation. Those that don’t, just don’t understand it and feel it’s easier to critique than to try and understand or….. have a go.

Is testing of these athletes done legitimately or is it the joke testing where they tell the athletes when they're being tested so they can just cycle off whatever they're on? That's an honest question because I don't know.

I am 47 and have played sports and been in the gym my whole life. I have known many guys that have taken stuff some with success some you could never tell. To this day the most impressive athlete I know grows and harvests all of his food. He works harder on his own projects in one day than most do in a month. He does enjoy exercising with weights and has very few pieces of equipment. He does all of this with a smile and is one of the nicest guys I know. Point is Marcus is right. It can be done. Also, the necessity to focus on so many disciplines at the time inherently increases training volume (at high intensity, as pointed out by Marcus).

But in Crossfit of all sports, athletes strangely becomes more injury resistant the older they get and become way more bulky and ripped than any Olympic athletes. Very weird.
