  • Do CrossFitters use steroids or PEDs? According to the internet I’m juiced to the gills. But the truth is that I’ve maintained my physique and performance for decades simply through sound training and nutrition - and in my 20s, I found out my testosterone was shockingly low.
Curious to see my blood panels? Today I’m revealing all. And if you too have low testosterone, I’ll take you through some of the natural methods I’ve tried to boost it, and what the results were.
Low T doesn’t have to be a death sentence - and even if you decide to use hormonal replacement therapy, you’re still going to need a sound training and nutrition foundation if you want to look good and move well.
Functional Bodybuilding can help with both - and I hope my story gives you some hope. Learn more about my training and nutrition methods at functional-bodybuilding.com/f...

WOW! how refreshing to hear you talk so openly about your journey. I've been thinking of trt and if that's the answer to my tiredness, anxiety and mild depression, bad temperedness, but hearing you talk about your belief in how the gym might solve some of this is really going to help push me in my motivation to stick at weightlifting and exercise. After watching your videos on kettlebells I think this is where im going to start. a very informative video. Great work Marcus 👏👏👏👌😉

Great video Marcus, totally admire your honesty and openness on this sensitive topic. As a 57 year old amateur CrossFiter I have also had low T for years and have recently got better gains though dialling in my nutrition and increasing my protein which as a vegan I discovered I was massively under consuming for years. I have also recently investigated TRT but decided that the risks out weighed the benefits and your video today has confirmed my thought that TRT is NOT the way to go, for me that is! Thank you so much for being such an inspirational human being and I’m sure your video will be an inspiration to many others too! Stay well!

Very inspiring story. In my opinion, you have made the right choice by postponing TRT as long as possible. The risk that your body gets fully dependent on it, and there is no way back, is considerable. Your struggle to overcome the physical and emotional drawbacks caused by the issue had to be massive, but I also have the impression that you really have come out of this battle victorious, considering all aspects of your life. An example to follow.

Thanks for sharing! I started getting panic attacks and depression about 5 years ago at 27 years old. I was also exhausted and almost nothing brought me joy other than my son and my wife. I am a law enforcement officer so I couldn’t do this career and continue having those issues. My primary care doc ordered labs and tests like your first doc. They found I have Hashimotos disease (autoimmune thyroid disease) and low testosterone. I did everything I possibly could to naturally treat it. I switched to day shift, increased my sleep from 5 hours to 7-9 every night religiously, stopped drinking, started meditation, got into Wim Hof method, training turned more into functional training and lots of mobility, sauna sessions 5 days a week 20-30 minutes and ate an AIP diet then Carnivore diet nose to tail with organ meats and IF. It helped but my testosterone never went up after 2 years of this. I still had panic attacks. I tried SSRIs and they put me in the hospital with serotonin overload. I eventually tried Testosterone. I never felt better. I put my Hashimotos in remission and no more panic attacks. I continued all the lifestyle changes I made and I’m feeling great. I take 100mg a week but divide it up daily. My testosterone is about 900 total and 20 free t. This is normal range for 33 year old man. I’m not using it to get jacked. It’s literally just for mental health and quality of life so I can be a better husband, father, and law enforcement officer to serve my community.
I have nothing against psychiatric meds. Most people Closest to me take medications that help them a lot. I have nothing against people that stay away from exogenous hormones or medications either. We are all individuals that are on our own path. Do what works for you and helps you live the best life you can.

I had some similar issues and similar responses. I was having sleep problems, brain fog, depression (treated with prozac, then off that after meditation), trouble recovering from training and eventually tested for and discovered clinically low T. I already trained a lot and had a decent diet but I went through some experiments with nutrition, meditation, dialing back LSD cardio training, eliminating alcohol and so on. Over the years my T stayed low as well. Unlike Marcus I went on TRT and the results have been amazing. It's worth noting I'm in my 40's, well past my sport competition days and don't make a living with my physique. Brain fog is gone, my recovery from training/sports is back to normal, bodyfat has dropped (mid teens) and I'm calmer and happier in general. My intent isn't to counter the video, Marcus is amazingly healthy with low T, just wanted to share my own story and that we should be able to talk about these things without some weird stigma being attached to them mostly due to cheaters in sport.

Testosterone issues can affect both men and women. I'm in my mid 40s and I was told my testosterone was low... My thoughts, I thought it was supposed to be low for women. Well, after blood work, it turns out it was significantly lower that it's supposed to be for my age. I enjoyed watching your video bc as a trainer, I like to know EVERYTHING that can affect my body to perform at its best. Thank you for sharing with us your journey.

Hey brother thanks for sharing! I’ve always had low testosterone (essentially did not go through a proper growth phase as a young man and it caused many issues for me. Through working with various functional medicine doctors and learning like you have I believe the culprit for me was that I gained a lot of excess fat as a 10-13 year old via poor food choices and over eating. This ruined my gut (leaky gut, developing auto immune issues etc) and caused malabsorption resulting in low androgen levels. My test was low, estrogen was high. This caused me to have gyno, always sore, always over trained etc. I started using testosterone when I was in my mid 20’s and noticed my mood was better, I wasn’t chronically sore etc. I recently came off of testosterone as my wife and I are trying to have children and I lasted about 8-10 weeks without it. I just couldn’t bare it anymore and had to start a low dose again. Within 3-5 days I am totally back to normal without any excess pain even though I train CrossFit daily as well as jiu jitsu. It can be a major struggle and many men experience the mental issues because of low t. I’m glad you’re looking into it and wanted to encourage you to continue to produce incredible content! 👊🏼🙏🏼🙌🏼

Would loved to have met you while I was stationed in California. Thinking about injuries, have you thought about a program to train around them? Bought your FBC program two years ago but have been told by the Army doctors that I have bulging disks in my C5 and C6 (thumb and first two fingers are slightly numb). Also, they said I have a bone spur in my right shoulder, so they said no overhead movements :-( Not sure I agree with that limitation. Now stationed in Pennsylvania, but still following you!

What a motivating journey. I stumbled on your video because I have been diagnosed with low T as well ~200ng/dl. Was bodybuilding for a whole year and saw massive gains. After a sudden illness I started having symptoms of low T: slow recovery, fatigue and a little gyno. Did you by any chance experience any physical symptoms of low T such as gyno? My estradiol levels were also unusually high. I'm only 22 so doctors are reluctant to start me on TRT. Even if they did, it would only further spike my estradiol levels. Was your estradiol within reference range when you got your diagnosis?

Very interesting thanks for sharing. I cant believe the doctors didnt consider your low body fat as a cause for lower T or your intense lifestyle (working out so much). Your low T3 and T are pretty clear signals that your body is in starvation mode. It lowers your metabolism by reducing thyroid output and induces a hypogonadal state just because the body prioretizes survival over reproduction if there are not large enough energy reserves. This is a very common pattern and can be seen with many 20yr olds which should be having a optimal hormonal profile they often times very quickly drop below the refrence rate in terms of their T when they go sub 10% bodyfat. Optimal range for "normal" testosterone is around 10-15% depending on the person everything below or above that will reduce your T levels. Also your lifestyle might also have contributed to it but I highly suspect your bodyfat is the primary factor. If you are sore everyday and overtrained then this will most likely also induce low T even at 20yrs of age and a high calorie intake. Reason being again, the body prioretizing survival over reproduction. What might help is aiming to be in the 10%+ and then doing another Test in the morning after waking up and having slept well. I am 90% sure your values will be much higher. This is a common misconception Good physique does not always equal high T. Especially when shredded which you are. If your shredded and natural your T will be supressed theres no way around it. Also higher fat intake and Intermittent fasting increasing Test are big myths they do the opposite often times and really arent great approaches at increasing test. What you need to do is get your T3 up and Test which is controlled by *leptin* . Leptin is primarily controlled by 2 things, body fat and sugar! You both dont have enough of both of them. Im sure you know enough about gaining weight to get in the 10%+ range, but I definitely suggest you switch your calories to complex carbs again and reduce your work out caloric burn. Then on paper your T will increase, trust me on this one try it and you will see a difference on your Blood work. Also like I said getting yourself tested in the morning after a good nights sleep is also very important. Also I mean if you feel fine and have a healthy sex drive/errections and are satisfied with your physique then there isnt really a reason to increase your Test in the first place. Also btw depressive episodes and lack of energy can also be induced by sub 10% bodyfat as a sidenote. I know being shredded makes you look sick, but if it makes you feel bad emotionally it obviously isnt worth it. Give my suggestions a try. I am 100% sure it will work. Also give me a shoutout or get me on the channel if this worked for you 😎😩❤

This is a dead on analyses and follows my own anecdote. One note, however, I definitely believe bodyfat plays a major role, but also interacts with how hard someone is training. Training hard and having low body is just a recipe for Low-T and mirrors my real life anecdote. In Marcus's case - He trains really hard and this, in combination of low body fat, will tank it even further. I suspect if he scaled back training heavily his T would rise a bit, even if he maintained his level of bodyfat. Of course, there are different degrees to sub-10%, I mean, each percentage drop below 10% is just going to make the problem worse... Marcus is a phenomenal athlete! Much respect to him!

I was going to post the same thing but you did a better job than I would have. When I was 7% body fat and boxing I had great stamina and speed, looked absolutely shredded and felt like absolute shit. Always down and pessimistic, as a result I would work out harder to get the endorphin rush to make myself feel better but I was burning my candle from both ends. 10%-12% is definitely my sweet spot. Better mood, hardly ever feeling down and better workouts. Popular culture definitely conflates leaness with health. But at 10%-12% with a good amount of muscle you look great.

  • @SWTORDREKKIN
    @SWTORDREKKIN 2 роки тому +1

Great video. That said because T fluctuates over the course of the day, and can be impacted by training sessions and diet. I think one should take multiple tests a day and compare those to multiple tests on another day. My case is interesting because I have had my testosterone taken a few months apart multiple times I have ranged from 280 (low) to 714 (high) - this was at age 40. One note: My testosterone was higher when I was a high carb diet, and tanked when I did low carb, even with the same amount of caloric intake. I am physically fit, though nowhere near as fit as you! But, I suspect in large part, that these numbers are heavily influenced by time of day taken, training schedule and so on. You work your ass off, and come to think of it, when I tend to do that, my T levels have dropped historically. Another anecdote: My test usually hovers around 400-500 when I train casually (2-3 times a week, including cardio) and eat a decent diet (not good, but not terrible). But my test tanks when I clean up my diet *and* train hard. They soar, somehow, when I am eating very high carb and very low fat diet while training fairly hard. Too many variables, so it is hard to nail this down. I have no desire to ever take TRT. A lot of these "unhealthy" problems from "Low-T" are caused by other things as well. Brain fog? Who hasn't had that before? Same with depression. Blaming all this shit on Low-T is pseudoscience. Sure, it may be the reason for some, but the correlation with Low-T is simply just that: Correlation.

Marcus, question... Since DHT, not testosterone, is mainly responsible for building muscle, do you know whether your DHT levels were relatively high? It could well be the case that you quickly aromatased testosterone into DHT and estrogens, which kept your T low but DHT high enough for building muscle.

great video - have you ever thought maybe it was the depression that caused the low T? I know from my own experience that when I am depressed I am a shell of myself. Mental performance, physical performance, overall zest for life, etc etc (I’m sure you can relate). It dawned on me recently that being depressed was actively deteriorating me in all aspects as a human. I don’t have the answers, but some food for thought for you. “How do you get past anxiety & depression ?” It’s something I am actively working out on a daily basis.

I feel ya. I just got the results of my sleep testing; all good there. Blood work looks good. T still low, too low for my liking. But the doc is okay with it (not his T). He wants to explore latent ADHD and mild depression from every other possible angle, but not the T. Weird how doctors think. They'd rather give a drug, than supplement something natural. Frustrating to say the least. Thanks for doing this video.

I am 62, with lifetime relatively low testosterone, and happy about it. Unlike my peers, I am not controlled by my d..k, but able to use when I decide it is "needed". Muscle mass is way above average and strength is about the same as when I was in my 30's. I have decided against trt for now, as I don't see the advantages of messing up the hormonal balance.

There is a wide range of hormone levels that work for individuals. Basically if it ain't broke dont fix it but also nothing wrong with trying trt to see if getting your levels to a more "common /average/optimal(?)" Level and see how it affects you personally, if there is any benefit for your health. There should be no stigma around this discussion. Who decides what "low" means anyway? "normal" in our society means obese sedentary and pre-diabetic

I actually supplement t myself for almost a year now because I don't produce much naturally and my last labs had me around 784 which is the upper end of things and I was feeling pretty good, but I actually cut back just to see how I feel on the lower end of things. Shooting for 300s maybe less to see if I even notice a difference. So far not much after a month of taking less but idk how much my levels have changed.
Really intrigued to find what works for my body though and huge advocate of others doing the same.
I think each individual will function optimally at different levels. i don't know that low is necessarily bad or more is better. It seems what's low for one person could be enough for someone else. Im more concerned of it getting out of balance in the other direction, as too high can lead to many health issues.
I don't buy into the idea that having low t should ever make someone feel "not man enough". fixing your levels should be about optimizing your health, sleep, sex drive, energy levels, mood, metabolism, body composition.
Hormones are a big part of the picture. And there is also stuff we can do like getting sunshine, not eating too much sugar, trying to get 8 hours of sleep nightly that can help all of that stuff too, which you're already doing. Thanks for being a great example marcus!

Concerning low testosteron, I am in the same boad as you and like to improve it for crossfit and general health. I looked around for how to improve testosteron without using illegal and dangerous drogs.
Recently I saw a prodcast about this topic where they talked about herbs, which improve testosteron. They talked about Tongkat Ali, Ashwagandha. They did a blood test before and after the use and there was an increase in T in the blood stream. There are many videos on UA-cam about this herbs which tell the same.
Did you make any experiences with these herbs?

Hey Alex! The first thing I did for my gut health is simplify my nutrition and habits. Once I was able to comply 9 out of 10 times with a habit, I stacked on another one. Here's a list of some simple habits that started to heal up my gut. In addition, you can do some bloodwork to check out what's going on under the hood.
      - Eat 3 meals consisting of whole, unprocessed food.
      - Eat 5 hours apart.
      - Fast 12 hours at night.
      - Slow down your eating and chew your food well. I typically think of 20 chews per bite of food
I hope these are a helpful and simple start to your gut health journey.

Very interesting. I also wonder if my testosterone levels were always a little low. I'm on trt now, because I had some really low levels. I really haven't noticed much benefits, actually was stronger before. I think maybe some of actually do fine on lower levels. Maybe if you have a low level with many of the symptoms it's different. Curious what my level was when I younger and really stronger more muscle and all, I bet the level was a little low. If you do try to trt and don't bump up the level to a low steroid cycle my guess is you won't notice much difference either. I think about stopping because I really see little benefit.
You do look so great in the younger pictures, it's difficult to believe you were natural. I was 230-235 at 5'10 though with a lot muscle and strength, but never dieting like you to get that look.. so maybe possible....how tall and what was your biggest weight.
    Good stuff anyway

It’s due to an unavoidable existing physical issue but completely threw me as to look at I also have zero visual reasons for having low T. Don’t want any replacement therapy as it feels wrong therefore looking for other ways to manage symptoms.

Ok I have a question that I’m not sure will be seen or answered but here goes: has anyone tried eating the way dr. Esselstein recommended? He always talked about the endothelial lining in vessels being able to expand and contract. But to live by his example a person would have to become a vegan. Those who go on it fully don’t have issues in the bedroom. Would increased ability of vessels to expand help the testes produce more testosterone??
If T levels go down enough it almost makes me wonder “why not try trt? It’s not like it can go down much more.” Lol. But at the same time I wonder if the massive increase in ability of the vessels to expand would solve everything???

Marcus, you may not have even hit your TRUE full potential. What if your T levels were just in the normal range? I think its worth a small 10 week cycle partnered with STRICT seamen retention. It could change your mind and outlook on everything. What would bug me is the fact that you'll never know what your potential was when you were younger. What if you made Rich Fronig come in 2nd? History would be different....all because your T levels were at 600....instead of 200. I guess that's why you wear a cup to practice. Thanks again for another great video brother.
