    Serge Nubret, I knew him very well. Trained at his Paris gym from 1980 to 1988 and later from 2008 to 2009 he had a health problem in 2010 and passed away in 2011.
    I knew his wife Jacqueline, his children.
    He was a good man, decent classy guy, so different than todays Bodybuilders.

    IF YOU TRAINED WITH SERGE IN 2005 or later he was training in a gym near Porte de Bagnolet north of Paris. I knew him from August 1980 to 2008. He used high volume training, with quite heavy weights considering the reps and sets. I remember doing 10 sets of 10-15 reps with 100kg on the bench press with Serge when he was almost 70. He was very intense and took only 45 seconds between each set. We trained with Serge and another bodybuilder who was about 26 years old and had a great physique.
    Serge did 10 sets and at the end he challenged the 26 year old to a bench press reps contest which ended in Serge doing 25 reps with 100kg and the younger guy did 28 reps… Remember Serge was almost 70 !
    Serge would begin his day with 2000 abdominal sit ups on a foam mat each day, he also did broomstick twists for 30 mins a day. He did 2 workouts a day.
    I met him in 1980 and he was frighteningly cut ripped, he had fibrous muscle mass, incredibly good skin, he was a red/brown black color.
    He did donkey calf raises with me on his back… I was his training partner. RIP Serge

    This is incredibly useful. Besides fatigue management, keeping a couple reps in the tank per set to add up more total volume, it also sounds much safer. Back in the 70 you didn't see as many guys that looked like Frankenstein's monster all stitched back together with missmatching parts. I think the grinder reps and pushing every set to failure nentality has contributed to a lot of tendon tears. When someone says they want to be ripped they don't mean connective tissue.

    this is called RIR based training (Reps in Reserve) .. you do 1-4 reps short of failure. to accumulate more total volume with less systemic fatigue.. works very well. books have been written about it and and very smart guys like Dr. Mike Israetel are advocates for this type of training,
    i use it with clients from beginner to very advanced and it works and is easily scalable

    Just a wild question that's been in the back of my head, do you think incorporating intervals of strongman/powerlifting style training such as the log press, farmer walks, stone loading......in my program would help with muscle density and conditioning along with a main high rep bodybuilding routine, the idea came to me because arnold franco colombu and ronnie coleman always had an insane grainy dense looking muscle and many attribute that to their powerlifting backgrounds, as I have noticed that the leaner powerlifters tend to have "powerful" lookingand surprizingly "aesthetic" physiques. as always thanks for the infos

    • @PeterKhatcherian
      @PeterKhatcherian  2 роки тому +4

      I think powerlifting or lower rep heavy weight training in phases can be beneficial. You need to keep it as close to possible as your bodybuilding training for more carry over. For example heavy bench will carry over more to bodybuilding than heavy log press

  • @MrArnoldarnold
    @MrArnoldarnold Рік тому +2

    I was also on that thread he references. I did 6x12, 5-6 different exercises per body part. I did it for a year straight. I picked a weight that caused me to fail on the 6th set before I reached 12 reps. I also only trained 1 body part 1 time a week as opposed to 2 times a week. I went from about 190 lbs to 182 lbs. I got super shredded. I had quality to my muscle. My body did shrink and I lost all of my strength. I was also 21-22 years old when I did this. Minimum of 1 hour and 20 minutes in the gym following a strict 1 minute break.
    My takeaways..
    1. If I were to do it again I would do something similar to what he’s saying in the video or I could probably achieve the results desired with 3x12 failing on the 3rd set before I reached the 12th rep as I believe that would’ve saved some strength. I’m now 36 and my recovery would be no where what it was back then.
    2. I would’ve eaten a lot more protein and carbs.
    3. I would not do it for a year straight but for maybe cutting up for a period of weeks.
    Note* My training partner did every body part twice a week and was getting bigger and stronger from it. My body did not respond the same way.
    *Right after I did this workout I started a new workout where I went back to a more traditional 3-4 sets of 6-10 reps and I got absolutely jacked and the quality from Serge’s training really shined through. A golden era look.
    *I have since abandoned this way of training over the years but after watching this post have become inspired to try it again.

  • @chrisa4882
    @chrisa4882 2 роки тому +8

    These legendary physiques are a result of genetics and response to drugs and not a result of a specific training routine.
    For example - Arnold's chest routine is well documented but no one has managed to build a chest like Arnold.
    Lee Priest's 20 sets on Tri's & Bi's has been copied by many, but no ones built arms like Lee Priest.
    Dorian Yates back routine will have been copied by many thousands around the world, yet no one has built a back like Dorian.
    Serge Nubret had a physique that many aspire to emulate. His training routine and diet is well documented and many thousands will have given it a go, but again no one has ever looked anything like Serge.
    I have personally trained in hard-core bodybuilding gym's since the late 80's. Training with and alongside very good competitive amateur bodybuilders. And without a doubt what made these guys so much better than the rest is their incredible response to steroids. In fact the best physiques in the gym were very often party animals who were out clubbing at the weekends mixing recreational drugs with PED's.
    Some guys for example can start off taking Dianabol and pack on 15lbs of solid quality muscle, whilst others just get a red bloated puffy face.
    People obsess about knowing every detail of a legendary bodybuilders training routine and diet when in fact its completely irrelevant to your own progress. If you're completely natural then that's entirely different as you are then relying on the workout itself along with nutrition for your gains. However there really is no legendary physique that was built entirely natural and that includes the likes of Leroy Colbert as steroids were readily available in his era.

    Very interesting ~ I was doing this type of workout almost exactly back in the mid 90s. I learned it from some of the gym bros, and I did have phenomenal results with it. Kinda like 4 sets of 8 reps per exercise, and 4 or 5 exercises per muscle group. Very high volume, but I was young and eat like a horse and I have the genetics for it. But it's not for the casual gym rat. I've had different workout partners quit on me claiming their bones had begun to ache too much lift with me lol

    Even after 25+ years of Training, the problem i always have is general fatigue the day after a Workout, to a point where i can hardly do anything that day. Going to failiure each set is so engrained in my habit, it's hard to do otherwise to be honest.
    In a high volume, mid intensity workout, what resting time between sets would you recommend?
    Also in the video, the workout you show as a example, what training split did you do there? Muscle group once a week? or more?

      @@nealsterling8151 Going to failure everytime becomes catabolic in the long run, you wont gain any mass in fact you might lose some. When i squat heavy, meaning 600+ pounds, I go for reps, Not for failure, i got to leave some gas in the tank and the weight is enough for hypertrophy, if I would go to or past failure on these heavy compound movements i would gas out and my nervous system would just shut down, so then I cant do any other exercises afterwards..we have to train smart. I suggest going to failure on lighter days where you do high reps if you absolutly want to

    You didn't start eating Horse meat like Serge did you?...hahaha....But seriously, Nubret was a legend and it is so cool you actually learned and conversed with the man. The late great Author Robert Kennedy of MuscleMag fame wrote a lot about Nubret's training and eating methods as well.
    He was big on training a muscle with a maximum pump....and then "leaving the pump there" take a break and then come back to the next bodypart.
    He subscribed to the "Fatigue Product Theory" espoused by Dennis DuBreul. Basically the theory is that after a pump, the blood, lactic acid and other systemic byproducts that are in the muscle need to stay there for a while to "properly do there job".
    20 minutes was the minimum wait time, and THEN go to the next bodypart. NOT doing so actually short changed your progress on that particular muscle group.
    He was also into daily ab training by the clock. According to Kennedy, he would not count reps or sets. He would just watch the clock. Anywhere from 30 minutes to an Hour!!!....Just blasting out the reps, taking a break when he felt like it and kept going. Is it any wonder his abs were so good and how he did little if any aerobic's during his competitive years?
    Yes, Nubret was a legend and a treasure. We can all learn from his wisdom.

    I’ve found Nubret very interesting to me and you can build muscles even heavy HIT, volume by using 6-15 reps and this wouldn’t be so sure of, but find it interesting. I mean it’s believable I’ve done sissy squats for 8x12 legs were on fire and sore. If this is the key to mass gains than good if not then I know

    I usually rest 20-30 seconds once I failed to hit my perceived rep it’s usually 1-3 reps short then go on and continue the 2-3 reps and count it as one set Example set 1 = 10reps
    set 2 = 8 with 20-30 seconds rest then go with the 2 reps I still get to complete the total volume i was aiming for
    was just wondering if this is a good idea should I continue it or stick to the basics I enjoy training till failure but I also want to get my volume up

      Leroy Colbert (RIP) recommended a whole body workout every other day, one exercise per body part, 3 sets of 8-10 reps, not counting warmup set(s). I did try Serge's program years ago. Never been fitter, but it was hard work eating all that protein every day. As I natural, I could do it again, but all I'd do on that program is eat and sleep. It would be a full-time job.

    • @ranvirojha3441

      I have done them and in my opinion you'll need 2 different sessions in the day for that atleast for push because train shoulder chest triceps quads and calves becomes alot but pull is pretty much a normal pull day with hamstring curls I think this split is called anterior and posterior training split you can find more information about it on reddit

      Here’s my thought process: the first 3 sets are “warmup pump sets” and the last 3 are your real working sets but because you started the first 3 for the warmup, your joints feel good and you’re pumping blood but the last 3 are where you really have to grind and fight through the pain. So eventually you will be 1-3 reps in reserve the last few.
