As a shift worker who is away for three or four days, then home for another three or four, I’ve found I’ve had to do my own thing. Your advice has helped hugely. I’m 41, 6ft 2 inches, been training for 4 years and have gained over 20kgs (45lbs). I’m now just over 220 lbs. It’s taken a long time to get what I think works best for me! I found a chest / back, Legs, Bi’s / Tri’s finally shoulders on day 4 has worked best. Mixing it up every few weeks, adding some squat or deadlift here and there. I used to pay more attention to diet but as long as it’s a good old school high protein and dairy diet, along with a lot of carbs on heavy days, that suits me fine. Yes, I’m not as lean as I was but I’ve found that being natty, I can’t have bigger muscle mass and low fat content. Especially with a busy work and home life. I’m kinda stuck at my size now, can’t seem to grow much more with my routine , as much as I’d like to but at the same time, it’s must be working when you still get the “Hey, you must workout?” comments.

I started lifting at 35 and like to go hard in the gym. I have absolutely destroyed my gains by getting injuries (out of the gym for a year due to torn traps), or getting sick (chronic bronchitis).
I have found that a 3 days a week full body program works best for me. Day 1, heavy barbell (big 3 plus rows) day 2, medium weight olympic lifts, and day 3 high volume dumbbell work. I also incorporate plenty of cardio, stretching, and corrective exercises to stay healthy.
At this point in time I feel great. Fingers crossed I don’t overdo it and have another serious injury. Lol

Great video. There needs to be a balance between listening to scientific advice and anecdotal advice. From my experience, most people should start with the "Bro" advice as it's simpler, and many beginners would benefit from being told to train hard and consistently.
However, I could see that as someone gets more advanced the science-based advice may be more applicable as they've already built a strong foundation and are in a position to utilize more nuanced concepts.

What's worked for my body is cycling my training throughout the year and/or for a particular need. Learned this when I played D-1 FBall.
Before that, lifted and ate heavy, compound only. Strong, 5'2" but fat (260+) w/ no stamina - not good for a H-back.

Figuring out whether to do more or less has been one of the hardest aspects of training for me! Not a bodybuilder but what yields most consistent strength and conditioning gains for me seems to be running certain high value exercises on maintenance while pushing hard at a select few, aiming to do at least 1 maintenance set per week per exercise balanced with frequent short notice overtime at my manual labor job. For example I don't want my dumbbell bench to outrun my single arm seated cable rows for shoulder health, and I currently run my single arm pullups on maintenance to conserve grip strength for other grip intensive work. Also single leg jump rope tends to bang up my ankle tendons if I overdo it so I currently do shorter sets until a target heart rate. However as soon as I hit a certain rep/conditioning goal with a certain weight/height on front squats, box jumps, sled push/pull circuits, dumbbell Fisher squats (an exercise I made up and named after Sam Fisher), I will most likely increase weight significantly (at least 10lbs per hand/side, 6 inches on the box or a full 45lbs plate for sled), and aim for the same rep/conditioning goal as before.

@@leepretorius4869 you will not look like Steve Reeves unless you have pretty good genetics. The best shot an advanced natural has to evolve is def not with a full body routine because of the volume, if a full body still is doing the work for someone it’s because of two things: they don’t need higher volume yet because they’re not advanced and they can progress just fine with less volume because of their genetics. If Steve Reeves was born on this era and chooses to stay natural, he would not follow a full body at his peak and would 100% sure be bigger than he was. In another words, Steve Reeves didn’t achieved his natural limit because he stayed with basic programs for his entire life, the basics don’t work forever and if still is working for someone that person is not advanced yet.
