Installing A Shop Air System

  • I plan to install the Ultimate Air Assist package from Cloudray Laser to upgrade the air assist on my laser cutter. But first, I want to improve the air system overall in my shop by adding dedicated quick release outlets in a couple of locations around my shop.
I got started with the upgrade by removing the noisy five-gallon Porter Cable pancake compressor that I have been using and replacing it with a new California Air Tools ultra-quiet aluminum air compressor.
With the new compressor in place, I used the Shapeoko XL to cut three mounting plates for the RapidAir Master Kit manifolds out of 3/4" MDF. I didn't want to bother with a bit-change for the mounting blocks, so I used the 1/4" end mill to pocket locations for the screws.
Using pipe tape, I taped and installed all the air system parts on the manifold blocks. I then marked the centers of the screw holes with a center punch and drilled pilot holes on the drill press. I attached the manifolds to the mounting plates with wood screws.
I measured out the air system piping on the floor and table with clamps and a tape measure. The pipe starts at the compressor near the middle of the room then tees in two directions to head down the walls. The tees and elbows were all included in the RapidAir Master Kit. I had to pull out some tables and cabinets to run the piping around the shop.
Next, I installed the mounting plates at both locations using drywall anchors and attached the pipes to the manifolds. I hooked a short air hose from the center manifold to the air compressor. I then added a blowgun near the Shapeoko and attached the hose to the other manifold near the laser for future use with the Ultimate Air Assist kit.

I’m doing some prep work for next weeks video where I will be installing the Ultimate Air Assist kit on the laser cutter. I thought it would be nice to not have to run an air hose over to the laser cutter every time I wanted to use the laser cutter and as a bonus I get a blowgun over by the Shapeoko! What do you think?

That noisy old compressor had to GO! This whole video was about making your shop healthier so you can grow up big and smart and strong🦖❤️

Very nice! My compressor is nearing the end of its life, I believe. It's currently mounted outside and under the floor of my workshop. I looked up your new compressor and was surprised at the level of affordability!

I can recommend it just for the noise level difference! But I've only had it for a week or two so not sure of anything else yet. The DB is quieter for sure but the main difference is just the "sound" of the noise if that makes sense. It is much more tolerable!

Is this a case of everything becomes a nail when you have a hammer? I'm pretty sure he could have made the same mounting plates without the cnc and probably faster too 😕

That is very true. However I don't have any woodworking tools besides a crappy circular saw and maybe a hand saw somewhere. For me it is just easier to draw a few rectangles and circles in Carbide Create and press go!

The way you ran your air lines will trap moisture.

      Thanks for the tip! Suggestions?

@@acwrightdesign I would run them up along the ceiling. That way water can drain down and can be blown out of the quarter turn valves on the blocks. I have the same air line system in my garage.

@@thisguybuilds That makes a lot of sense. I may have to just disconnect the air line occasionally and drain. I will keep this in mind for the future!
