Meet David, a helicopter pilot and builder who recently bought and put together a full scale rotorway helicopter. Rotorway has been around for quite some time and they are one of the only few aircraft kit manufacturers who provide kits and options for a 2 place helicopter. We featured the Rotorway A600 Talon helicopter in January. In this video we meet the owner and builder of that helicopter.

According to David, he decided to build one because he’s alway had interest in flying, particularly helicopters, and he loves the flexibility of helicopters, the fact that you can land them on short runways or just about anywhere that is clear of trees and wires.
The A600 helicopter uses a converted Volkswagen engine with a power output of 168 HP. This is the turbocharged version. If you go for a standard A600 kit, then you’ll be down to 147 HP. The helicopter will climb at a respectable 1000 feet per minute and you are cruising between 80 to 100 miles per hour. A brand new A600 Talon kit which includes the engine runs for about $160,000
Engine: RH600T 168HP
Capacity: 2
Useful load: 620 lbs
Range: 200 miles
Speed: 90 - 100 mph
Price: $160,000

I know everyone wants to see the helicopter fly, but we have to keep things within legal limits. David just finished building this helicopter and it needs to complete 40 hours of test flight before it is fully certified and able to fly with a passenger. When that happens you'll get a flight video promise.
This is my daughter’s best friend dad helicopter. We live in Kennesaw. He has very nice toys. Very nice family. I don’t have the heart to ask to fly in it though lol. Very cool.....
Sly Fox Hi neighbor! Once i have my 40 hours of testing done (at PUJ), you’re welcome to take a ride in it! Just drop by and knock on our door! :)
David Chow sure thing!! I’ll see if Honore will let me LOL.
Coincidentally I have a friend who has a plane in Calhoun. He also runs the junior Civil Air Patrol program. Maybe you guys can swap flights. He’s been flying for years now. He’s working on his commercial license now.
Is this something you can fly without a license? As a start?
Andrew Scott you have to have a license to fly it
Great to meet the owner and hear his story, it has to be very satisfying to begin such a build and complete it.
The history of your grandfather is awesome, that has to keep a smile on you along with the pride. Stay safe!
This spoke to me. Thank you for being so candid. I’m 50 and considering getting into helicopter flying (finally!). I’ve been in several, flown one, but I just can’t get it out of my mind. I’m not wealthy, so it’s still just a Dream, but I am hoping to do it before I die!
Keep getting your flying hours in, as much as you can, one day. You'll achieve your dream, Rome wasn't built in a day, you will get there.
Nice I’ve been wanting to build one since the 80s. Hopefully I will be able to succeed.
I always love watching vids regarding aviation so great work Mojo!! Seeing this one brought some tears and a bit of joy to me today. Your father was standing in the "Sky Center" as it was called back in the day, next to the mustard yellow ship I flew in with my father. Thanks!!
Great video! I just started building my single seat Helicycle! I am about 6 months into it and it is going well. BJ Schramm also designed the Helicycle after he left the Rotorway Company. He was a gifted designer for sure.
Thanks for the update Dave. I really think you should have your own utube channel
Thanks, My Dad ordered the sales kit in the 80's as well. I still have the VHS tape! Great summary sir.
Live your dream brother.
Everyone complaining about not seeing it fly: just watch a different A600 fly. Or a Exec 162, or an Exec 162 turbine. It’s all on UA-cam. I don’t understand why you just HAVE to see this exact one fly.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I like the owner (he seems like a nice bloke) and can’t wait to see him successfully get through his test phase and start using his aircraft in earnest!
I too would like to see him fly it. I know I can watch any others, but he built this. Hes taking us through his effort and I want to see the results. Why would he make a vid about building and flying and not fly?? I hope he is successful.
Awesomeness! Enjoy your choices brother! Thanks for the video Mike.
This is great! So interesting, I was wondering the story of the guy who had a helicopter in his driveway. Thanks for sharing
Great story and I too have love helicopters for years and plan to do the same. Thanks for your story and Making It Happen! Awesome!
Great job David!
Very interesting David! Nice job, the helicopter looks really nice. I have told many people about the ride you gave me in your Miata with the V8. This is probably going to be a lot safer than blasting down Abernathy!! LOL
Dream come true! Congrats!
Randy from overtones nv I got my rotorway 162f loved your video...
Enjoy watching your videos so much that I put the deposit down on my own AX600 today!!! Look forward to meeting you at a fly-in in the near future
Watching them vids you got the bug , ive had the bug sence the scorpion in the 60s
Mike love your videos. This heli videos are nice. But this is the first you posted 3 videos of this helicopter with great contents . But never saw it flies .
Darren Fadrigon easy remedy: just watch a different one fly, I mean you are on UA-cam.
Andre3K I want to see this particular one fly :-)
Well done you.
Easiest way to keep your neighbours happy, once the check out is done, just take them for a fly around.
Commercial flying. I've seen a few places do weddings. They seem to be good.
Great video....He did nice work !!
That is so cool, i would love to get into building one.
Excellent Video Guys.
Cool! Very cool!
Awesome build!
We need to see that aircraft flying.
Great story, great helicopter
Thanks for sharing your story David! I would be interested in how you went about learning to fly a helicopter and maybe the challenges you came across when building the kit.
He didn’t build it. FAA says otherwise.
Well Sir, congrats and all the best of luck, it’s a dream of mine as well, bit I’m a bit older.
Awesome! Well done dude!
When the crates arrived did you need a forklift? Any specialty tools? Mostly bolt together? Nice job also, very informative.
Charlez Wrighte just a pallet jack. Mostly common tools but occasionally some specialty tools to make building easier
Awesome story, video. Thanks for sharing.
Great, the price is good, and I believe the maintenance fee for 100 hours is less than 10% of the helicopter price. In Chengdu, 4 times.
Bell has Semi Ridged, Hughes 500 Fully Articulating, hit a branch in the 500 and you need a new rotor hub, do it in a Bell ( even chop down a 3” tree ) and no harm done to the rotor system.
Are we ever going to see it fly?
Derek Daye dude, just watch a different one, you are on UA-cam.
Good to meet and talk to you at Homers...the bird looks great!!
Do you need to look up the license for this for this built or no
Awesome video.
I wanted to see it fly though.!!!
Can you build commercial time in an experimental aircraft and fly for hire?
Don’t fly in IMC conditions!
8 crates would be very intimidating.
Is this a four cylinder engine from VW? How many leaders or cubic inches is this engine? And what Volkswagen does it come out of?
When do we get to see this thing fly? BTW: Great videos!!
What an awesome story. There is nothing more satisfying in life... than fulfilling a life long dream. Enjoy!
Nice man how much is that kit, have you got any videos on your building it how long did it take?
right now, they are on sale for about 90,000 .......
Cool
I've seen multiple walkaroud videos of this helicopter. Can we see it fly?
Sterling Williams you do realize that this is UA-cam and this is not the only one of these in existence right?
@@superskullmaster
There's been multiple walkthrough videos of this specific helicopter. We would like to see the owner/builder successfully get it off the ground. Quit trolling and get a life.
Sterling Williams I’m not trolling, this man doesn’t owe you anything. Stop being lazy.
@@superskullmaster You're a very confused person aren't you!?!? No one said he owed us anything. We're excited to see the helicopter fly especially after the time he's put into it.
Go find another battle to fight keyboard warrior.
Nice work. I’ve been around rotorwing for 22 years in the Army. I’ve worked on all Army airframes except the chinook. I’ve got stick time on 0H-58 A-D, and Ah-64 A. This would be a fun build!
nice dragonfly.

Move to Alabama plenty of open airspace!
Airline hiring frenzy became airline firing frenzy. Thanks Corona!😡
And still ongoing. AAL...
Good idea to keep the N-NUMBER out of the picture, so no one can come knocking on his door
Looking at this Rotorway A600, I see it being used for TV News helicopter. I'm talking about the low-cost-but-high-quality alternative to the expensive Bell JetRanger and Eurocopter AS350. Both of which are used for TV News helicopters. The Bell JetRanger costs $1.2 million to buy, and the Eurocopter AS350 cost $2.4 million to purchase. Plus, and you’ve got to consider additional costs of daily maintenance. Plus, I can picture the following choppers bearing a TV station logo: Cabri G2, Skyrider SKY, CH 77 Ranabot Turbo, the Robinson R22, the Schweitzer 300, and of course, this Rotorway A600. There are a few US TV stations that have used the Schweitzer 300 helicopter. One of them being NBC affiliate WAFF 48 in Huntsville, AL - ua-cam.com/video/Q_J2j96d6kU/v-deo.html
I was pretty sure I saw this for sale on plane trader a few months back. Any reason for selling it? (I could be wrong but the paint scheme matched)
Hello. What state is david located in?
Tn or Al
@@madmurdock2968 the city is Kennesaw.... might be GA ? Mike is from GA... so he does like to shoot close to home
Question: does that think have an engine governor on it?
an option.
Flashlight to a helicopter..
I understood they were in bankruptcy and builders were having problems getting their kits.
when are you going to update us all on your build?
This week Brian. Stay tuned.
How do you like your rotorway?
You can do it dare to dream
I can be your neighbor with any problem i love it
Only a range of 200 miles before needed to refuel? Idk if that's worth the almost $200k price tag. Maybe closer to $100k would be reasonable
200 miles is a bit ambitious 170 maybe, and you would know you"d covered some distance.if you want to travel, without fuelling, even further, you will be in the $750,000.used range, and a shed load of expensive rating craft.it just aint cheap.
Check out kitfox for you next fixed wing project
Well bud....you might want to consider just buying an aviation company...pilots are out of work across the board and air carriers are gonna sell cheap as hell 👍
And still no flying...
FAA says he has no license to fly it.
So apparently china bought one of these and claimed they built it to fly unmanned 2 years ago lol.
First!
How can anyone believe the so called owner of this aircraft.. N-number on aircraft on FAA website shows another person built this helicopter.
