Seen many gals Live. Aretha, Adele, Tina, the gals in Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Pretenders, Blondie, Grace Slick, Dolly, Emmylou all fine. Yet, none had the power, tenderness, clarity and natural glorious sound of Linda Ronstadt. Certainly had a deep crush seeing her in the 70s but those pipes, especially in Spanish, just got more mesmerizing as time went on - especially Live. When she stopped singing our collective musical hearts were broken. Rockin' or crooning a very special songbird.

I respect your list, but I wouldn't put Aretha Franklin below Linda for those qualities. ESPECIALLY power. Aretha could bring you to your knees in awe. Just listen to "Good to Me As I am to You."

I don't think anyone would be grading or comparing to who is the one who screams the loudest.
I just listened to your suggestion, and yes Aretha does scream loud in her singing. But I'm sure that Ethan is referring to an overall great singer who reaches very high pitch notes , soft and tender and clear - just as he indicates in the comments.
Linda Ronstadt undoubtedly has been praised for having all these qualities, versatility, singing very beautifully in many different genres-like no other on planet Earth.

While Aretha was a magnificent vocalist, and her natural gospel "belt" is other worldly - at the performances I attended in the 80s, she was terrific but phoning it in emotionally and the band was routine. Still Aretha was a joy to behold. Linda, especially Live, for me is something else - tremendous flexible pipes surrounded by devoted top flight players. Whether they be rockers with blazing guitars, loud Mariachi musicians, strumming country twangers, or orchestras like Nelson Riddle - Ronstadt's instrument was mesmerizing in both tone and technique. And yeah the crush, when we were young enhanced the Live shows. "Comparison is the killer joy" The greats are greats - long may we listen. ✌

I saw Linda Ronstadt live 40 times in my lifetime. I had summers where my friends and I would see her at the Music Hall in Boston, then move out of Boston to see the same show in Worcester, then on to Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maine and up to the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in New York. I saw her with Nelson Riddle at Radio City Music Hall and I saw the Las Canciones show at Great Woods in Mansfield. We were literal Ronstadt groupies. It was worth every minute and every cent we spent. She's nothing short of magnificent.

Out of respect to other singers, we say that Linda is one of the best or amongst the best singers ever. But we know that combining all her attributes, her powerful beautiful singing voice, her high pitch reach, is really unsurpassed.
She truly is a precious Gem and our National Treasure.
We have witnessed her singing in so so many different genres, and she has masterfully conquered them all .not in a so so medium average fashion, but in an outstanding way.
She can tune a piano and guitar as soon as she sings the first note.
      Powerful !!!

We would wait on line outside various venues starting at 3 AM, Radio City Muic Hall, various Arenas, to get good seats for her upcoming shows. No one did that for female acts in those days (mid 70s - early 80s) - except for Linda Ronstadt. For all her American Superstardom she remained an unpretentious free spirit where music and singing were the point. Fame seemed to be drag for her - how unusual.

Found a quote from photographer Alan Messer, according to video he was off by 10 days in his recollection: "I photographed Linda Ronstadt’s Old Grey Whistle Test live broadcast at the New Victoria Theatre, London on November 1st, 1976, working with the Whistle Test production team. I spent the entire concert standing in front of her with my cameras. Linda seemed to be staring at me most of the time. I was twenty five and very shy and she was extraordinarily beautiful."

Everyone concerned knows she has always been brilliant, but this perform shows that "peak of its powers" quality shared with the tightest band one could imagine for the set, plus crystal clear sound and mix to enjoy every single nuance.

such beautiful powerful and delicate voice as well.

For so many years, a new set of covers from Linda that she somehow managed to turn into the definitive versions of the songs. Her voice, on a soft, subtle ballad to a belting Stones rocker, sang the soundtrack of our generation with passion, compassion, and class.

This tour was my second time for seeing Linda (out of eleven over the years). I wish I could explain what it was like to see her live back then--and hear how clear and dulcet her voice was, even in some large arenas (like the Spectrum in Philly). But mostly it was just her undeniable talent. It's hard to believe, but her voice would get even better than this, her control even greater; after doing Pirates and La Boheme she truly became one of the finest singers of the last half century or so. A voice that could go anywhere and often did. A gift.

Linda's voice live will make the hair on your arm stand up. Its that simple and she was that good. Yes, she could easily bring you to tears. Easily! Her voice was just beautiful. Stunningly powerful. For those who never saw her live these videos are just fantastic to see and hear again and I'm happy her voice and music lives on.

I see Glenn Frye and Waddy Wachtel. Who’s on bass, slide, percussion?

Yeah, later in the set I see Glenn must have been off with that later band. Here are the players: Andrew Gold, Kenny Edwards, Waddy Wachtel, Dan Dugmore, Brock Walsh, and Michael Botts

its not Glen Frye, its JD Souther, and its Kenny Edwards on bass, who was in The Stone Ponys with Liinda

Amazing how fast this band would be fired today. But decent backup vox

Who are you kidding, bubba. I've seen her 40 times in my lifetime. Every one of her bands was great. Give me a break. Now everyone makes their sound out of a fucking computer.

I wish Tumblin Dive wasn’t cut from this. Much like all the 70’s and 80’s shows, so many great songs edited out due to time. But someone had to leave on of her Mexican tunes. She never realized that most Americans or Brits didn’t come to hear that. It’s pretty and she covers it well. But she could sing literally anything.
    Great show as always!!!

Yeah, because HOW DARE THEY keep a song that had meaning to her. You claim to KNOW what she "realized" or didn't? I saw her around this time, with this band, and you know what? The audience was FINE with her singing ONE song from her father's heritage.. You lament missing Tumbling Dice, I miss Carmelita. Suck it up child, and appreciate what IS still around ALMOST 50 years later

I don't think 1970's country rock music was that big in UK at the time. Rock of course was big in England and as well as folk/rock bands like Fairport Convention, Pentangle but not so much California country rock even though Linda's voice was phenomenal. Didn't seem like Linda Ronstadt and her band played much in England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland in the 1970's. Maybe her mgmt team didn't push much for many tours in those countries then.

Linda always sounds like she's on her period. I blame Karla Bonoff. Still, she does it very well.
