    We find carriers interesting because there are incredibly OP fighters that are hyperdrive capable (x wing). So if you have to dedicate a ship specifically to bringing fighters into battle then it better be real good

      Carriers are also much more efficient in a combat situation. They can resupply fighters mid-battle, pick up pilots who have to eject, and provide a central command center that can monitor the whole battlefield better than individual pilots can.

      It's far more economical to just carry smaller craft around than to have to spend resources on each one individually traveling to a system.

      Don't forget, if you're all traveling individually, arriving in appropriate formations to support each other at the same time is very logistically difficult without a carrier.

    I personally like the idea of a carrier that isn't utterly helpless. Not to the degree of a Stardestroyer, but enough guns that give an attacking ship pause rather than it being a "free kill". Reliable and stable VTOL technology (which Star Wars has) would drastically reduce the space needed for carrier operations, thus allowing more space for ship functions and offensive weapons.

      The problem is that every turbo-laser you add costs you fewer star fighters, less space to repair/rearm them, less room to bunk pilots and maintenance crews, fewer munitions and spares for the fighters... and a combat space patrol can do the work of the ship's armament if the carrier gets jumped while using pretty much the same resources the strike fighters do.
      And then there's the unfortunate habit of carrier captains who have any guns on their ships that try to use it as if it were built for the line of battle, risking a ship that costs like a cruiser but hits like an anemic frigate in close combat, impaling themselves on the enemy guns and denying their own fighters the chance to land and rearm.

      The New Orders Resurgent-class Star Destroyer was honestly a good ship overall for the "well rounded" approach. It was near double the size of a ISD, but it took all the lessons of the vessel and implemented it. Heavy firepower, heavy shields. I especially liked the conveyor belt Tie Fighter hangers.
      Was all you needed for planetary assault, all in one package. Still weak to "plot armor" though. Those turrets that deployed SAM's should've ruined the resistance if they got anywhere near the ship.

    One observation I made. While the Providence clearly is focused more on direct combat, they aren't sacrificing as much of a fighter compliment as you'd think. The Republic has pilots. They need to be housed, fed, and given rest to do their job properly. The CIS had droids. None of those are a concern. The hangar of a Providence being smaller isn't as much of downgrade considering you can pack in those vultures nice and tight. We've seen they not only store them on the ceiling, but even launch them directly from there as well. More, the Venators hangars doubles as cargo space. You need more supplies to maintain people than droids so that's gonna take up hangar space. I'd bet if you loaded both a Providence and Venator's hangars with all the necessary cargo then packed in as many fighters as you feasibly can, the difference would be quite small. The more I think about it, in this scenario I'd think the Providence could potentially hold more. And to note, I am not taking into consideration the skill difference between pilots and droids nor the effectivity of their chosen fighters. I'm thinking pure numbers.

      For the Vong war, I would choose the endurance class carrier or convert an MC-80B or an MC-90 hull into a carrier. The Venator was hopelessly underpowered by even the Galactic Civil War era, so you would have to essentially create a new class of war ship by updating it with "modern" tech for service in the Vong war.

    One of my favorite ships in SW is the Quasar class carrier. It looks cool and it’s a vastly cheaper way for the Empire to bring TIE fighters into battle and service them than a star destroyer, so it’s practical too. with proper friend / foe detection and advanced flight coordination support, I think a carrier platform with a focus on missile launchers would be a really cool concept. Firing barrages of cluster missiles mixed in with larger hard hitting ones and hey maybe even a mix of Buzz droid deploying missiles and then sending out your fighter wave right behind it, almost acting like a walking barrage. The enemy will be overwhelmed with all the missile signatures from the opening barrage, and then be even further flooded by your fighter signatures.
    Ovbs throwing tons of missiles out there while you have friendly fighters would require advanced friend / foe and flight control support, so much of this carrier would have to have space dedicating to computing and observation towers like the Nebula had to help coordinate friendly fighter movements and the info they get. I envision a combination of what the Victory 1 SD did with its maneuvering flaps and batteries of concussion missile launchers on the sides while also dedicating more to hanger space like the first order Resurgent class did with its hanger entrance in the front of the ship hidden within the superstructure. I'd just add massive deployable blast doors to be able to close in that gap when fighters are not needed.

    • @Von_Langstein
      @Von_Langstein 3 місяці тому +3

      With my mind on cluster missiles and buzz droids, I wonder if enough buzz droids could take down a corvette or larger ship. Also curious if there were larger / different types of buzz droids. Having swarms of them cutting into the hull / disabling turrets would definitely soften up a larger ship for bombers or missiles to finish off. I'm actually surprised Buzz droids were not integrated with boarding ship/pods. When the pod is meant to burro into a enemy ship to deploy troops you'd think sending out a little group of buzz droids after impact would help.
      Could you imagine the nightmare of trying to find the single remaining buzz droid crawling throughout your cap ship? It could be there for weeks covering ground, cut a wire here, move on. Break a component here, move on. It would be playing cat and mouse with the crew, and lowering morale the whole time with the as you cant go into a all clear status if you have a active saboteur onboard, meaning full shift hours for everyone and constant look outs / responding to damage.

    • @Von_Langstein
      @Von_Langstein 3 місяці тому +1

      Missiles are already meant to bypass shields in the SW verse. Why didn't we see a tactic like this used more:
      Enemy cap ship is engaging us with heavy guns. We launch buzz droid missiles at the turret areas, the missiles get through the shield and crash into the area near the heavy turrets. All the buzz droids are programed to prioritize trying to disable the turrets either through disrupting their ability to turn or even fire outright. The enemy cap ship cant just fire at it self, what are you gonna do use a PDC turret to light up your heavy turret within your own shields as swarms of buzz droids cover it? Sounds like risking blowing up your own turret rather than saving it.

    • @JJJBunney001

      That's not really a carrier, you're better off having dedicated artillery platforms in a mixed fleet

    • @Von_Langstein
      @Von_Langstein 3 місяці тому +1

      @@JJJBunney001 I'm more thinking of just taking the already existing battle carriers in lore, but instead of turbo laser turrets and such. Opt in for more missile launchers of varying sizes and then just fighter screening PDC.
      But yeah at the end of the day a fleet of specialized ships win out.
      My thoughts here were more for a single ship scenario. If I had a battle carrier, I'd rather it be covered in long range / cluster missile launchers than big ship to ship guns. I'd rely on my fighters and missiles to do the job rather than my fighters and then closing in with my cap ship for turbo laser range

    • @sebastianbauer4768

      Not to mention a carrier can mount far better sensors and have a proper command deck with dedicated people to coordinate those fighters in a battle. Kinda what happens on a real aircraft carrier and it’s support group, they are not *just* a fancy way to transport aircraft to war zones and resupply them. They are force multipliers coordinating the planes, giving them targets and warn them about dangers as well as providing a safe zone hostile interceptors can’t just pursue returning fighters towards.

    I think the screenplay reason is that fighters and freighters make better hero ships.
    Think about it: How much direct combat and peril does the navigator on a Star Wars ship see? How much impact on the battle or the mission do they have? What about the Weapons officer? The Gunner? The captain?
    Now how much danger and impact does the Character in a A, B, Y or X-Wing have? Recently, they even started walking on the ships in space suits - because fighters are apparently too big.

    I don't know. There's a reason mainline capitol ship designs moved away from carriers of the Republic. In SW, carriers are great escorts/support ships, but not capital ships.
    I think people get confused because they compare SW with real life, where carriers emerged from the battleships of the pacific and not vice versa.
    People love the Venator, but it was consistently outgunned by every mainline CIS warship. The Republic Navy had to stiff arm in space engagements, and relied too heavily on their Starfighters, which weren't enough superior to CIS droid fighters. With the droid fighters being small, cheap, and compact, it made them exceptionally easy to store in hangers or externally. Ships like the Lucrehulke were like battleship-carriers, and if they weren't so slow and defensive in nature, they'd be one of the best capitol ships in SW.
    A change had to happen in Rpublic naval philosophy. This lead to ISDs, carracks, tectors, and Victorys, which could now effectively combat CIS warships.
    Despite what ecks says, even mon cal, and later new class designs had a huge focus on ship to ship combat. They were good carriers, but it gets overstated because of the quality of NR starfighters.
    Carriers, like they should be in SW, were relagated to escort roles. Still important, but not to the detriment of the fleet. Great examples of this are the ton falk, endurance, Gladiator, and Quaisar.

    A practical escort carrier concept could be a hybrid between a fast carrier with some Lancer Frigate DNA.
    It has enough AA to strongly discourage enemy fighters from attacking it, and uses its own fighters to project power.
    It has the speed to stay away from the heavy brawler capital ships and lets its fighters take care of them.
    And with good fighter defences of its own it has a good chance of surviving to resupply and dock fighters afterwards.
    Particularly for non Hyperspace equipped fighters, having your carrier destroyed by enemy fighters was a constant worry in battle.
    With this concept a defensive screen isn't as necessary.

Also, the possibilities when you take a Carrier, especially a previously military Battlecarrier and repurpose it for civilian or criminal/underground purposes: A mobile Distribution center, a Company HQ, a Guild Home (Example, Bounty Hunters operating with their personal Ships and returning back for Rest or new Contracts), a mobile black Market, an information Bazar.

      It’s a bit of a lack of imagination from the writers. While a nuclear explosion on its own would be pretty useless in the vacuum of space(pretty much just a flash bang) that doesn’t preclude its use as a "propellant" of sorts for a penetrator round on a warhead for example. Just your casual 1 ton tungsten rod moving at an appreciable fraction of light speed passing through your ship so to speak. I guess it could be argued that turbo lasers are so powerful these weapons are unnecessary but then again, missiles, rockets and torpedos exist and could be improved by using nuclear fusion(hydrogen bombs).
      However any kind of logic breaks down when you look at ground battles. Take for example Jedi, how much effort went into countering them with ever more elaborate droid designs when you could have just put a nuke into the torso of a random b1 with a dead man switch and tell it to go hug anakin, obi-wan, Yoda etc? Or how about nuclear artillery? Bunch of AT-ATs with AT-STs and hundreds of stormtroopers coming over that hill? Just blanket the entire grid with a couple dozen pocket nukes from an artillery unit.
      Nukes are so good in ground wars that the only reason we don’t use them is because we are afraid that the other guys start using them too and everyone gets dead.

    If i were thrown into the SW universe during the late CW Early imperial era, i would chose the liberator as my personal command ship carrier, as it was able to carry over a thousand fighters, it had fire power that rivaled that of a titan class battle cruiser, and it had an experimental super ion cannon, the ship was also capable of being operated with a skeliton crew due to its advanced technology for the time. The ship was also able to carry enough cargo to fund a small fleet for life, the ship could of possibly even soloed an executor in a 1v1 if used correctly ( this is a CW era republic battle cruiser/carrier

    Republic actually had a pretty well rounded fleet, it just wasn't used right. Venators were great carriers, but lacked firepower. Victories were great dedicated warships. Acclimators were great ground assault ships. Arquitens were great escorts for all the others. Clone Wars TV show should've shown some Victories, with everything else supporting behind them. Heck, even the Imperator Star Destroyers were starting to be produced near the end of the war, which were ISD's with a Venators bridge.

    I have a carrier concept (but I don't think it classifies as a Carrier tho)
    It's basically just like other Carriers just that the Hangers are portals to on ground airfields
    if it has say 4 hanger "door" it would be 4 portals in this case which lead to 4 different airfields on 4 different planets
    😅

    I think most people like them more, including myself, because they are more versatile and can overcome whatever is a hindrance to them. They are not just shooting, they are armed mostly well enough and can carry whatever fighters they need. A great example is the Venator in CW that carried that stealth ship inside it, they used that to punch through that massive blockade while still having whatever else they needed for that invasion as well. You can just put inside it whatever you need for a specific task, something no imperial SD could do. Also a big reason is that starfighters are very strong in star wars, how often did we see one side winning cause of starfighters? They are a game changer. Imagine the confederacy without their massive amount of droid fighers, which was exactly the point why the republic feared space battles with them, not because of their capital ships. Carriers in star wars just proved more interesting and more powerful and thats why fans like them. We all saw how many times the republic won because of that.

    It depends on the specific type of "carrier" some are just as great at being battleships. Like ISDs most of which are basically both while leaning more to the ship of the line end.
    Wouldn't allow my carriers to be on the front lines though unless they're just as good as battleships with decent armor an least respectable firepower. With decent fighter/bomber compliment at a similar time. This definition is what i imagine is where someone got the idea for anything "assault" class. ESPECIALLY if its some kinda carrier.

    I think experience playing Star Citizen can offer some new perspectives on this.
    The first actual carrier is just getting added to the game in the form of the Idris frigate. But enterprising players have been operating snub ships off of improvised pocket carriers for a few years now (Cargo ships like the Caterpillar and Hercules, luxury yachts like the 890 Jump, or even refueling tankers like Starfarer.
    And what we have found is that while fun, it isn't really worth it. The time and effort to carefully load up and deploy the snubfighters is way more than it takes a squad of jump capable fighters to form up and jump, and they are usually better armed and armored than their smaller counterparts.
    But at the same time, we only have ONE star system, and it is well populated with places to repair, rearm, and refuel everywhere!
    Eventually we will get the ability to refuel fighters by hand on board carriers, and we'll also be getting more star systems with bigger distances between planets, and fewer friendly places to resupply. And then, maybe carriers will make more sense.

    One thing you notice about star trek ships is that they all have a shuttle bay of some kind, just for normal transport to and from the ship. Does the Tector class have a small shuttle bay somewhere? How does the crew disembark when there isint a specialised star destroyer dock?

    • @hanzzel6086
      @hanzzel6086 3 місяці тому

      The Imps (and by extension the Tectors) do have (iirc, 4) tiny secondary hangers in the trench that can (barely) hold a Lamda and a few ties at a time.

    • @hanzzel6086
      @hanzzel6086 3 місяці тому

      @@nikiong66 A standard Imp has a crew of approximately fifty to fifty-five thousand, but as far as I'm aware there are no officialnumbers for the Tector. So let's do some math (and guessing). Depending on source between twenty and thirty thousand of those are Stormtroopers and/or pilots, and as such would (presumably) not be aboard a Tector (along side all/most the vehicle maintenance personnel). So assuming a Tector has slightly higher levels of crew requirements to maintain the ship/man the guns (to maintain/ man the additional guns and reactors), I'd guess a Tector as somewhere between twenty and thirty (but potentially as low as 15) thousand crew.
      Edit: Oh, and both do feature (quite a few actually) escape pods scattered about the outer hull. I also don't recall anyone who isn't a good guy ever using them.

  • @terrykrugii5652
    @terrykrugii5652 3 місяці тому

    The short answer: the dominance of the carrier is moreso due to how essential star fighters are in any space battle
    The long answer: a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

  • @Scuzzlebutt142
    @Scuzzlebutt142 3 місяці тому +2

    For Carriers, they seemed to be dominant in the Clone Wars, then lose popularity moving into the Imperial Era. We see in Rouge One, unengaged Star Fighters disable a Star Destroyer, but not destroy it, whereas we see Y-wings decimate Capital Ship Squadrons during the Clone Wars.
    My personal head cannon to make sense of this, is there was some break through in tech towards the end of the Clone Wars, and all of a sudden Capital Ship Shields got alot more powerful, making most star Fighters weapon compliments unable to punch though, meaning a shift back towards Capital Ships with Heavy Anti-ship armament, and a smaller integral Fighter compliment for Anti-starfighter roles and specialty roles, hence the ISD, a battleship with a much smaller fighter compliment than the Venator.
    It's only 20 years later, around ANH, we start to see a swing towards more parity between fighters and Capital Ships again, with new developed weapons (the Heavy Ion bombs the Y-wings dropped at Scarif) and Starfighters with much heavier weapons compliments (B-Wings), but not the dominant force they once were. This leads to the development of the Lancer, and the TIE Interceptor by the Empire, as Fighters are now more of a threat.
    It makes sense to me, and would mostly explain why there is the change, and doesn't make anyone stupid, just a bit slow to adapt (as a Bureaucracy as big as the Empire would be).

    One thing that not a lot of people touch on is the contradictory nature of Imperial fighter doctrine. The design of TIE fighters and their stereotypical usage makes it seem as though the Empire doesn't value their fighters whatsoever, yet the lore around TIE fighter pilots suggests that they extremely well trained.
    And it isn't like with stormtroopers, where all the inconsistencies comes from lore misconceptions on the part of various writers and such, pretty much all the lore I know of suggests that TIE pilots were extremely well trained and excellent, but the Empire simultaneously used them like cannon fodder. So clearly there was something really wrong with Imperial Navy tacticians.
