The PC GPU market is often like a game of chess, new pieces and players come in and the choices made, both from manufacturer and consumer are tactical. The RX580, a fourth Generation Polaris model derived from the GCN architecture, is similar to what powers the PS4Pro and Xbox One X. Here we have a large 8GB model and pitted against the newer, yet weaker Xbox Series S, I test it in full overclocked mode in a selection of modern 1080, 1440 and even 4K titles including brand new titles in The Last of us Part1. With the aim to test the value and power it offers, is this Check & Mate for the Series S?

The freedom to adjust resolution, graphical settings on PC really does enable so much flexibility and choice. Nice to see an updated RX580 still has plenty of life left in it.People think they need to have every setting set at ultra @2160p is silly, you can get a great experience (even better than Series S) for a fair price as long as you’re sensible about it. It really depends on your perspective about gaming. The series S is a good system for 1080p 30-60fps gaming (for the highest demanding games), you can even get support for 120fps in certain games like Gears of War 5. It’s easy to setup and requires very little to no technical knowledge.
The PC on the other hand, while older, still offers a lot of performance and PC allows you the flexibility to adjust graphics settings, so you have the freedom to go for higher frame rates with lower quality visuals (or you could play some games at medium-high settings if you are willing to play at 30-40fps). But since it’s a PC, it requires more upkeep like keeping your AMD drivers and windows updated.
Then there’s also the matter of your existing game library, do you already own games on Xbox One/360? Then you could play them on the Series S. But if you have Steam games already, maybe PC would be the better choice.
One thing that is great about PC is you can literally get free games from Epic and Amazon Prime if you have it. I have almost 150 games (most are high quality too) in my Epic library from claiming them just over the last 3 years. Xbox/Console just straight up does not offer anything like that.

Seems like they have different variants for different markets. The one you have here looks like a more solid build ( better heatsink, more sturdy bracket, 8 pin connector etc) compared to the other variants of RX 580 8GB by Aisurix. I can get the other one( 6 pin connector + 3 DP and HDMI port) for £55 equivalent.
I like using AMD VSR 1440p on 1080p and then FSR Quality does a nice job. FSR 1 is faster overall but FSR2 is much cleaner.
But a used RX 6600 would be ideal.
MGS5 is 1440p on PS4 pro, not 1080p

The Series S gpu is about as powerful as the rx 580 but this rx580 is in fact a rx570 with 2048sp. Performance wize its in the same ballpark but the series s gpu handles newer games much better. You cant compare native resolution to FSR performance since fsr 2 in the highest mode "quality" is only 720p when running 1080. Fsr performance on 4k is actually 1080p native upscales to 4 k. Yes fsr 2 looks great still but its like the series S running in performance mode. If you compare games like battlefield 2042 the series s is 1200p and gets a rock solid 60fps, thats not possible with an rx 570, same goes for cyberpunk and halo infinte and games like wild hearts and wo long thats super demanding runs alot smoother.
Even I consider my msi 80w 2060, 9750h,16gb ram a direct competitor to series s but that 6gb vram choking it before the cpu, now this is what I never thought buying this instead of a series s and a crappy laptop for college.
Anyone know the min and max bounds of DRS in Spiderman with FSR2? If it’s dropping below 60fps with DRS, than either it’s not a wide enough range or the GPU is still not fast enough at minimum bounds.

My old RX 580 from 2017 that I got new for £100 thanks to a pricing error is still hanging in there. I also get a little extra head room by outputting to a freesync display or a PAL HDTV at 50Hz with the difference between 50fps and 60fps being minimal.

Yet the used GPU is 1/4 of the console, while a new one is 1/2 of the console and you still need a 1 TB SSD at the least and you don't have have access to GDDR6 RAM like the console counterpart, while of PC games are launching more and more unoptimized.

The apex of the GCN generation would be the RX 590 (which I use) and could give a performance boost, both in memory and GPU clocks. We're talking about a gain of around 5-7%, which in some cases means a more consistent 60fps.
The apex of GCN is Radeon 7, lol.

@@raresmacovei8382 you are right, GCN 5 was called NCU (next generation GCN), Vega cards were based on this "NCU" but they unfortunately were descontinued very fast. The Radeon 7 being most a "prototype" card.

SERIES S - 4tf rdna 2.
1 tf rdna2 = 1,25 tf gcn (this was said by the Xbox architect Ronald in an interview for Eurogamer (DF)).
4*1,25 = 5tf.
So... Series S is 5tf machine (as gcn architecture).
5tf gcn is rx570!!! No 580. 580 has 6tf. It is Xbox One X.
Rx570 is 1650+15-20%. It's real Series S level.

I’d also say skip this get a RX6600, I picked up a used one on eBay for £180 (usually sell around £200) however it has almost twice the GPU power whilst being far more power efficient TDP at 135w vs the 580 having 185w. I had a RX580 btw and just upgraded to the RX6600 and it’s a night and day difference, haven’t looked back.

Not very good card, wait it's 6 years old now? Mine had many problems with multi monitor setups and high refresh rates. A current 6650 XT does well in these scenarios and is ~120% faster.
I think the other parts of your comparison pc are slightly higher than the series s. Ex: 10 GB ram in the Series s vs 32GB ram and zen 2 vs zen 3.

580 is an old power hog compared to a 6600. Don't buy one in 2023 please. I do still own one so I'm not hating. But I also own a 6700XT AND RTX 3080
It is not in the same price bracket, this card and video is aimed at someone with a 4GB GTX970 or RX470 or even lower. An upgrade to this card is around $120/£140 where as a 6600 is going to cost 2.5x that new and maybe 2x used. This is not in the same price range, hence why I aimed this at the Series S as a Console equivalent.
@@NXGamer you hit the nail on the head for me, just ordered a xfx rx580 8gb upgrading from a xfx rx460 4gb for 90 dollars used, will pair it with my i7-4790, 24gb of ddr3 1600 and 500w psu. pc part prices are crazy and seems to me like people are brainwashed. pc just has so so many advantages over a console even if the games coming out now take a while to get fixed. amazing that a 4th gen pc plays the same games as a new one (whatever gen we are on now 34???) I will only discuss reliability of the card not the technical aspects. I bought the card from Amazon Jan of 2023 and it lasted less than 6 months. Technical support was non existent. I would not recommend the card regardless of the price.
No way 4K FSR1 performance is better looking than just 1080p native

Actually it is, FSR 1 performance mode is 50% scaling on each axis so 3840x2160 "4k" is rendered at 1920x1080 "FHD", so it's already starting with 1080p and enhancing it.
So how is it enhanced? Well first AA is applied then it's scaled using Lanczos resampling so there is minimal quality loss from upscaling.
Then we get to the secret sauce that enhance the image over native FHD and that's Contrast Aware Sharpening (CAS).
This is a special sharpening filter that as the name suggests uses the contrast in different areas of the image to decide where to apply sharpening and how much to use.
This means high detail areas pop with additional sharpening but low detail areas avoid it.
Also note that the sharpening pass is in 4k, making it finer and more intricate which lessens artifacts over simply applying sharpening at 1080p.
So whilst older sharpening filters caused more problems than they solved, CAS removes those downsides and only sharpens in ways that benefit the image.
It also gives the advantage of a stronger AA pass as the blurriness typically associated with that is fixed by the sharpening.
So FSR 1 at 4k is definitely a better presentation than native 1080p, no need to take my word for it why not try it for yourself or check out comparison images online.
Alas it's obviously nowhere near a good FSR 2 where in certain titles 4k performance mode looks better than 4k native (Horizon Zero Dawn is a good example) and quality mode looks better than native in every game at atleast 1440p and higher. Still not as pretty as DLSS though, where the AA is so flawless it often looks like an 8k image downsampled to 4k.

The Series S is small and compactl. When it comes to standard computer hardware small for some reason = expensive. I doubt you will be able to build a equally sized computer with that GPU.
The same size and better just get an A2000. RTX, DLSS 2.0, etc…

Also in the APU world you have the 780m which is at the lower end of this performance tier, but within the pricing realm, and honestly even smaller, but the Series S is solid for what it is.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the Xbox, it is merely a console vs PC comparison that makes sense due to the price and performance being in the same market. Hence why I cover a range of games and also cover the other PC GPU upgrades this would work for those on a budget. Also, you missed the point if you only saw higher resolution, as this shows higher res or performance or both, the comparison is fair, balanced and a valid one to make for potential market convergence, hence why I framed it this way.

I even have my old Xbox one -s with custom 1Tb ssd beult in.
Works great with games what normal have a high load time.
And i use a amd Ryzen 2600x with a vega 56.
