I Didn't Know That! Are You Using Too Much Detergent on Your Clothes?

- If you have a lot of questions about laundry, the Laundry Lab at Consumer Reports is the place to go. According to laundry expert Rich Handel, people are using way too much detergent. Most people know that you have to separate lights from darks but it's actually a bit more complicated than that. Handel says to separate heavier items from light-colored clothing. For example, you do not want to wash a heavy pair of jeans with a light sweater.
I pour the detergent like I do my seasonings which is until it feels right 😂
Unless I pretend like my detergent is garlic... then I overdose it to the max!!
I recommend science over feelings. ✌️
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@moonshoes11no thanks
Detergent Bae.
Almost all clothing items have a different way to wash them...if you followed all that i would love to see your water and electricity bill 😅
Regular 2-3 loads laundry turns into 12 loads.
some washers have a “sensing” setting and only fill as much as is needed
try handwashing.
Don't care. Just dump everything in, add detergent, turn on power, press play. That's how everyone does it.
I don’t.
@@moonshoes11.......Yes you do and we all know it.
@@NY_7
Nope. I have a system.
But weird you think you know what I do better than I do.
Where did you find this magical ability….to fool yourself so easily?
@@moonshoes11 ......Nope don't lie. You do this. We all know it. We've all watched you too. Shame on you.
I know very little myself but this video definitely helps.
Yeah… so, that’s not going to happen. 😂
Right! I 2nd that motion🙋🏽♀️
Yeah, I've always washed everything together, no problems
Waste your money then
@@ibewillit’s not wasting money if you can fill the washing machine fully full. What is wasting though is the use of detergent soap yes.
Better to use Marseille pure soap for better for the environment and less harmful chemicals in the sewage.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 right?! I’m weeeak!
She just filled it up to the 2nd line on the cap? The whole video was just to say “follow the instructions.”
Right? I came here thinking it was going to show something new and here it is just saying hey...fill to the fill line and dint cram your clothes in 🤯 rocket science yall 😂
I’m astounded at the things for which this woman requires the advice of an expert
Her housekeeper does the wash.
I'll use less detergent now for sure but I'm combining all colors in 1 load only.
If you get those things called color catchers you can mix colors
your whites might become greys, that’s the biggest risk
your heavy stuff (jeans) might make your nice shirts/sweaters look beaten up
@ahill4642 Well I've been doing it for almost a couple decades and the colors don't change
@@JC-de1ik, same here. I have never had any issues washing my dark colored clothes with my light colored clothes.
I instinctively knew all this already. I've always separated my laundry by color and fabric type. Have to leave room for water to get dirt out and keep it from getting back into the fabric. Tide concentrated is great! Don't need a lot.
Why is he yelling at her? Chill dude.
I was just mocking him 😂😂 “STOOOOPPP!🤓”
Right 😂😂
He was just kidding around. It was for effect.
She was wasting detergent!!
Maybe she reminds him of his wife or an ex
I do every step wrong😂
Same 😂🤝🏼
in the corner with you, nose to the wall
I’ll keep doing laundry my way
I wash my clothes the way I want it.
I mean it’s your money.
You can waste your time and money and your machines health if you want
@@ibewillseems like you cared about others but yourself? why dont you just give him your credit card number and social security jit
😂
@@ibewill I use powder detergent so its fine. Its much better for your machine to use powder
I use too much 😂😂
Me too 😂
No you don't. Don't listen to them. What she poured was not enough detergent to thoroughly clean a full load of laundry.
@@blackcherry6877Thanks laundry expert
if you use too much your clothes might still have soap residue in them and feel kinda grimy
Same Shampoo. Hairstylists recommend that the user should cup one hand and add shampoo to the center of the palm (the center, leaving about 1/2" to 3/4" on each side) then mix with water before applying to the hair. Using it straight will strip one's hair of important oils.
I believe I am doing exactly that, overstripping. Thanks for this.
that's such a waste lol i aint doing that , also when i wash my clothes i aint washing a measly small basket of clothes
you rebel
You better go to college to learn how to write.
@@bepriceless it's a yt comment chillout
If this guy wishes to pay for all my coin laundry then I’ll separate like he suggested until then no thank you!
He was talking about people with their own machines, not you
I think that's exactly why we overfill. Nobody wants to use more machines than they need to know what's $4 a machine, minimum.
I will totally admit yep I use a lot of detergent😂😂😂😂
The more the better, right!
Every single person who watched this video is definitely overflowing the washing machine with detergent.
I'm still going to use up to the fill line. I have clothes from over 10 years ago that still look great.1
Very valuable information. Thanks!
imagine having a hamper for every one of those symbols
😂 😳
I did not know that I, too, am a laundry expert based on all he said that I already know, and I probably know a little more than he does. I’m itching to get that certification so I can get a high paying job
😂 I felt kinda smart after watching this, too!
Good to know
That liquid detergent is literally just powder detergent watered down btw 😂
wow this is riveting journalism ...
🤔 Your mom does your laundry doesn’t she? 👀
You're the one who clicked on it.
Wow amazed
Lol I use two capfuls for one load. Might even start doing three.
you’re bad
Love doing laundry and hate doing ironing
hang things immediately after dryer stops and most wrinkles will fall out. Consider buying one of those nifty hand-held steamers instead of ironing.
I agree with you and I don't think that it is right and we have a laundry across the street to do our clothes to separate our whites dark etc, we take them out of the washing machine to the dryer so that we can check on them and bring them back to the house etc. Would you do it at home or going to a guy's laundry machine experiment.
Parents used to teach this stuff but since everyone is a complete moron these days we need a tabloid news article to teach us.
No one taught me
The talking rat inside my basement taught me, I'm forever grateful with him but never saw him since 😢
Same here when I was growing up my Dad taught me all little recently but not enough
* A little recently but not enough to know how doing Laundry really works
Didn’t realize there was a wrong way of doing your laundry
good refresher ☺️
Laundry is one of my favorite things to do and I’m not sure why
Cause you crazy
How about hand washing clothes?
Well I guess there is something wrong with everyone.
I've seen youtube channels devoted to laundry and washing machines.
On a side note, can you do my laundry? lol
@@aaronjaggan You'd need a washboard and bucket. Outright handwashing is ass.
I have always wondered what those little symbols meant.
Now you do, and tomorrow you'll forget.
The laundry tags can be scanned with your phone camera too!
My phone doesn't have a camera. It looks like this. 👉 ☎️
@@TheEgg185 Look for any numbers on the tags, combine them, and dial that number. You'll reach the right .. whategear.
No lines under the temperature means normal cycle. One and two lines means permanent press and delicate. All detergent have the measurement instructions right there on the bottle. If you don’t want to measure every time switch to pod detergent (which also have instructions of how to use)
Sorry but separating everything and going through so many cycles would make the electricity bill sky rocket
your machine might have a “sensor” that fills only what it need to, and your drying times would be shorter with smaller loads, too, maybe? 🤔
What about water?
How does one become a laundry expert?
I always wash one red sock with my whites
you’re bad
I've always used less detergent, but I've never separated my clothes and I never had any issues.
They go light on every thing. Dayum salt pepper lookin ahh 😂
that’s all i use yes in high school we where taught about the tags and how to do laundry
what, something useful taught in high school! I am legitimately surprised.
After doing over 25 loads of laundry the last Two days then this pops up 😆
I definitely use a cup for hubby his work clothes need it! your wearing and paying for the clothes just do what you think is best
@@wojtek-33it's their money to waste so let them be
That's right Julie. Keep up the good work hun/.
I perspire quite profusely so I definitely need more detergent than the amount shown. If not, my laundry retains odors. It would be disrespectful to others if I didn’t adequately wash my clothing and linens. Using that tiny amount is practically penny-pinching.
The bottle tells us to do that, too. It’s not much more than a centimetre/less than half an inch for a load. Detergent has evolved.
BUT WHY?
just dooooo ittttttttt
BECAUSE
“According to laundry expert” 😂😂😂😂
Hey, dude takes it seriously. Did you see all his bottles of detergent? 😳
@@ahill4642 At first, no. So I started to replay the video, then at 0:08, I lost it!
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂 THIS IS HILARIOUS
It depends on the concentration of the detergent. If it's 100% concentrated, then only a little is needed. If it's been diluted 60-80%, then I use more accordingly.
I have always heard you have to separate colors, but I don't know why, I have never done it and my clothes have always been fine.
Biggest reason: keeping white stuff white instead of greyish
If it can be poured into the cap without making a mess while storing, I’d do it. (I don’t want to wipe it with the laundry either).
spin.
Oh wow that’s crazy *continues to fill the detergent lid all the way*
Ive always seperated colors but I draw the line at that. Seperating heavy and light fabrics would make doing laundry even less desirable.
True. Added time and money. Sorry light clothes, you're going in with my winter coat!
Just put the heavier items at the bottom of the laundry And put the white ones on top so they're not gonna bother each other
I already forgot what he said 😂. I'll survive.
Okay Laundry Karen and Kevin, still just throwing em in! Bombs away 😅
I knew the issue with too much detergent, but you definitely don't have to separate lights and darks, heavies and lights, unless you have something very specific or delicate. Otherwise, it's all fair game. Buy good detergent, use cold water, gtg
I've been using half a jug per load. No wonder I have been spending so much on detergent!
Yeah this video probably for just all the office workers who do nothing.
The Motto I go by is if I don't see bubbles I'm in trouble😂
Gotta make it rhyme:
If I don't see *a bubble, then* I'm in trouble 😆
Allah give you baraka! Thank You 🤩
If people don’t know the obvious than they shouldn’t be washing clothes. Most machines will break within the first year if you fill them too much or make the load too heavy.
I had to mess so much clothes to learn how to properly wash my clothes....
I don't do all that separation
Again they're filling an older washer not a new age washer that can handle more abuse
These rules don’t apply to me.
Oops! I have definitely used way too much detergent !
His family probably walks on "Eggshells" when doing their laundry!.. 🧺🤣
Cheers to good smells clothes
That might have been the case a decade or 2 ago but not today
This is why I take my own wash cloths and bath towels with me no matter where I stay.
The logic of a stable genius.
Only people that get paid to do laundry should follow these tips.
Us common folk should keep on going the path of least resistance
dam
Nah… let me tell you… I don’t separate anything and I put soap like 3/4 of the cup. I’ve never had any issue. No colors bleeding or anything. Some fading after like… years maybe. That’s it. But laundry isn’t great complicated. Just throw everything and put some soap in.
To me thats not enough 😂😂
At all.‼️🚫😂
I don't do laundry, i just buy new clothes.
Omg I put wayyyy too much detergent
Never understood why people used SO MUCH laundry soap, its soap, its going to spread, do you use a ton of soap hand washing dishes? or shampoo? No, you use a little bit at a time.
This was made for GenZ 😂 gotta b
The laundry room at my apt takes 4$ a load 16 quarters
They should upgrade to card operated machines instead of coins.
I never use too much soap
So don't wash everything all at once 😂
I’ve never had a problem doing that 😂
I have found out from experience don't wash your sheets and towels together that's why sheets get those little pills all over them , you know, those small rough bumps. I wash my sheets separate from everything else.
The easy way to deal with pills on clothing and bedding is to get a fabric shaver which is a battery operated shaver that snips the knotted strings and makes the clothes feel better again.
I throw jeans, shirts, socks, underwear, etc in and never have any problems.
but the 99% of people i know NEED THAT extra detergent lol
Wait a minute.....you're supposed to use detergent??? When did THIS start?
No matter how much detergent stains don’t come out.
0:56 Please tell me this is a tutorial for kids who have never washed before in their life.
Yes lll
0:20 still using too much.
Also, learned this when I was in grade school. Who doesn't know this basic stuff?
Also, you don't need to use bounce in your dryer. All it does it makes your clothes smell disgusting quicker.
I’m good
Now that I know this I will still not do it
Wait, this stuff isn’t universally already known???
At least its not a crappy HE washers. Its Kenmore [Whirlpool] Direct Drive.
"STOPPPP TOOO MUCHHHH"
My clothes have never thanked me. Neither have my kids.
Of course I'm the odd one out here with OCD.
This is a story. Wow how far we have fallen from the good old days of news when they only reported crimes. Now its toys, fashion and useless things like this
Is it just me or is Inside Edition having issues in finding worthy & interesting content to cover???😂
A break from all the madness going on right now is appreciated
just you

Good point!!
And I thought the P-in-a-circle means that it's okay to park there.
I use the pods, no measuring soap. Simple and easy.
How do they taste, lol had to do it!
Scent boosters definitely work. Just fyi
Most detergent is 70% water I’m using alot
