@@bourbon0781 would be interesting to see if gandalf could/would go that far killing the guy who just reclaimed erabor and thus is its king(lacks the arkenstone but still holds respect and authority in many ways) would not serve gandalf well and may well make the dwarfs perma pissed at gandalf the elfs and the men of laketown/dale
0:28 Thranduil and Bard have that “what are you doing up there?” Look. On a side note, I like how the dwarves (with the obvious exception of Thorin) aren’t mad at Bilbo for his ‘betrayal’, and are willing to listen to his explanation.
Even Thorin doesn’t try to throw Bilbo off the ramparts immediately. When Bilbo trails off after saying “I wanted to, but…” Thorin hears him out, asking “but what?” Armitage brilliantly shows in his eyes that Thorin is conflicted internally between his real self and the dragon sickness, trying to restrain himself before the madness finally takes over.
Ngl, this version of The Hobbit really shows why Bilbo did what he did. Not just because he didn't want more bloodshed and risk harm to his friends and others in Dale. He saw and was the only one willing to call out the downfall of Thorin after assuming the crown. He saw that the once grim yet noble Thorin Oakenshield was reducing to little more than a conniving, paranoid dwarf lord. His companions were loyal to him but didn't want to dare question their rightful king of his decent into darkness. Only Bilbo, the smallest, weakest, and most humble, knew he had to prevent Thorin going to a senseless war with the people he had promised to return their kindness all because he hated the elves and didn't want to share the wealth of the mountain. Praise Bilbo for his courage and honor. Also, gotta respect Thranduil for being worried. High elven king yet he didn't want harm to come to Bilbo as he had respect for the little halfling
A lot of comments are about Bilbo and Thorin's interaction, Thrandruil and Bard's reaction, Gandalf's boom voice, and Gloin's helmet. May I just say that the most underrated part, but speaks the most in volumes on where the dwarfs' loyalties lie, is when Bofur told Bilbo the one defiance the rest of the dwarves felt. "Go". This one word against the order of the king, to keep Bilbo safe, is what keeps me up crying in my pillow at night.
@@djohnson3274that’s a misstep, though. Bilbo is the main character. The very title refers to him. Jackson’s films put way too much focus away from Bilbo and onto other characters. Thorin is a crucial character, the second protagonist after Bilbo, yes, but Bilbo is the number one. The whole book is told from his POV, after all.
Thorin's acting is magnificent... the betrayal and hurt he felt from a friend he had grown to trust and love... and the rage from hearing the truth that he refused to accept because of his pride. I cry everytime I watch it.
Bilbo was incredibly brave, at least with smaug he had the ring and the dragon couldn't see him, but he was standing face to face with thorin, a dwarf that could probably snap his neck in a second with his bare hands.
I just finished reading The Hobbit's chapter 17, and it was an amazing chapter. Bilbo's "betrayal" was really well portrayed to the screen. Thorin wasn't *that* agressive to Bilbo in the book though.
Yeah, I guess they did it this way to keep Smaug in the spotlight. Yeah, he got killed in laketown, but his aura and spirit took over Thorin so he can be like him similar to how Thror ended up until Smaug took over Erebor.
From what I've read Tolkien was really interested in "dragon sickness" and a lot of what we see/read is based off of a lot of different lore. Some of those that have the sickness in stories actually end up becoming a dragon basically. Its really neat how they played off of that. Just makes me love the franchise more.
@@katt5817 That's what horrified me, honestly. I'm sure Melkor would have been absolutely laughing at this, seeing the sickness of his creations tainting that of the dwarves.

@@rogueskywalker2624 yeah and i was surprised that even a cold elf like Thranduil was afraid when Thorin tried to kill Bilbo. He knew Thorin has gone too far, and his reputation would've been DESTROYED if Thorin killed Bilbo.
Love how the Dwarves actually defend Bilbo on this one. They didn't see it as an act of betrayal, they knew Bilbo was trying to help Thoris who has indeed changed.
I don't care who, but any of the actors in this scene should have won an Oscar at least! Yes these films are flawed but they are still magnificent and almost perfect! Why don't people appreciate such hard work anymore?
KT NI Lady I do not want by any means to sound rude , but this is no Oscar-worthy acting. I love Tolkien's World and the Lord of the Rings movies, but I have to admit that the Hobbit movies were a pile of shit.
The acting is brilliant. The script is dogshit. Stretching a simple book into a trilogy is a mistake, there simply wasn't enough material to justify three movies, it could have been a single work of genius, 2 good movies, or three crappy movies. And greed always wins that struggle, doesn't it?
Vid0907 I'm not blaming the actors, or Peter Jackson, just the producers, and the studio. There's some brilliant acting, as I said in my original comment, but the story just isn't enough to make a trilogy from, and it shows in these movies - the parts drawn directly from the book are amazing, but the "filler" stuff made up to stretch the movies is garbage. The Tauriel, Legolas, and Kili love triangle, the confrontation between the White Council and Sauron, the character Alfrid (in its ENTIRETY!), all these things took these movies from great to "meh", imo
He doesn’t even look scared at all. He was always prepared for the fact that he’d be in peril. It’s a look of pure heartbreak, knowing that the Thorin he knew would never demand such a thing, and thus he’s truly lost Thorin.
I really think Peter Jackson did an amazing job. He added so much to the story, so much to the battle of the five armies, and he added a lot more character to Thorin by including the orks. I loved the books but honestly I think the movies are better
I actually agree, and I'm a huge fan of Tolkien's written word ("The Hobbit" was one of those books that got me into reading, and "Lord of the Rings" is still my favorite book). As great as the novel was, the trilogy improved upon it.
And to think, he did this when he only had less than half the time to do this trilogy as he did with the LOTR trilogy. Imagine how good this trilogy would be if he had the 7 years to make it.
I love how despite Bilbo taking the King of the dwarves crown jewel, rest of the company refused to turn on Bilbo, even when Thorin ordered it and then attempted to do it himself.. In fact, Bofur tells Bilbo to go, showing no anger towards him.
1:49 - Thorin was all fire and fury until he heard Gandalf talking in that *voice* and stopped dead in his tracks. He at least had the good sense to not risk provoking an already agitated Wizard, haha.
@@12classics39 Yeah, I'm sure when he *really* wanted to, Gandalf could let someone FEEL just how dangerous it could really be to risk provoking him, haha.

Martin is probably my favourite actor ever, everything that he’s been in, from what I’ve seen (Fargo (The Series), Cargo, A Confession etc) he has never ever disappointed me with his acting, he is always spot on and he is amazing, it blows my mind how good he is.
Honestly! The dwarfs in the background are so good, one of my fav moments is at 0:45 Bombur like looks down and is totally thinking “shits about to go down”
Gandalf busting out the magic ‘do not fuck with me’ voice when he says ‘IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY BURGLAR’ is a nice touch. Especially since the only other time I can think of him using it is to tell a literal hell-demon that it ain’t crossing no bridge. Underlines the seriousness of the situation nicely
Having the voice who defended him decades before to him being scolded by the same very loud booming voice aught to be scary. Its like Having that one nice friend, very satisfying when they yell at someone who deserves it. But when that same person yells at you, its stunning and terrifying.
i swear to god i liked thorin, but at this particular moment i wanted to jump into the screen and knock the living daylight outta him. (but i guess i dont need to do that anymore--)
The best parts of the last two films were when they focused on the relationships of Bilbo and the dwarves. The introduction of Legolas and Tauriel and the undue attention paid to them destroyed the focus and pacing of these movies for me, it's quite sad. An Unexpected Journey demonstrates how wonderful this trilogy could have been.
Yes, too much deviation from the books. I still enjoyed the movies and I'm usually welcome to changes in lore but if they focused more on the actual journey to erebor instead of all the side stuff then it'd of been better.
It's an interesting scene because the dwarves agree that whoever holds the Arkenstone is "crowned" and would in theory have the allegiance of the dwarf families. Bilbo throughout most of this movie acts the ideal of a king more than Thorin: risking his life for the greater good, cherishes the living more than treasure as seen in the acorn scene, and seeks his friends out for advice. And when he held the Arkenstone he was technically King under the Mountain.
You know what more terrifying than Thorin in this scene It's the dark change in the voice of Gandalf when he was trying to save Bilbo he's like if Bilbo dies every single one of you will die with him
It's amazing how when Gandalf's voice booms, it's like Gandalf tries so hard holding back his true form from coming out. Hes still a Maiar and an istari. Very powerful beings.
Ok but honestly I read a lot of the comments and most of them are about how everyone’s like nah fuck this when thorin says to throw him from the rampart but can we please talk about HOW FUCKING HURT Thorin looks when bilbo says he gave them the arkenstone like he trusted bilbo more then the dwarves when it came to the stone which is shown when he tells him he believes one of the dwarves had taken the stone and I know bilbo did the right thing cause the stone would’ve made thorin worse but I cried when bilbo told him cause he was confused betrayed and hurt and you could see all of that in his eyes
The way Thorin almost breaks through after Bilbo tells him he's changed. He looks hurt and guilty for a split second. You can see the fight in Thorin's eyes the entirety of Bilbo's speech. And he lost. That guilt of failure almost followed him to the grave.
I love the initial moment when thorin goes "throw him from the rampart" and all the dwarves are kinda just like: "dude... uh no"

You can tell thorins heart broke when he said "you have no claim over ME" like dude
And the “Do not speak to *me* of *loyalty* !” line. While clearly trying to not burst into tears.
And it’s such a lie. Thorin is totally gone for Bilbo, and it’s so obvious, and it’s why this “betrayal” hurts so much.
I love any time a magical character raises his/her voice.
IF YOU DONT LIKE MY BURGLAR...
I was almost crying in this scene. I could see the pain in Thorin's eyes because of the betrayal
i know! you can see that pain when he says, "you..."
It was for the better, though he had not realized till his life was at an end
Not even that. If you look at him closely when Bilbo talks about old Thorin from Bag-End Thorin is fighting with the Dragon Sickness on the inside which makes this scene more heartbreaking.
Bilbo could have delivered a more convincing explanation, The "I took it as my share" part wasn't so smart to make Thorin thinking about it.
Jo Moody I know right! It was so unfair...
1:33 in Tranduil mind: ohhhhhhhhh my gawwwd
1:49 I love gandalfs big boy voice here. The line he says is actually from the books and he insisted on saying it so they had to rewrite the scene a little at his request.
I kept kn repeating this line hahaha
The sudden raise of voice by Gandalf is a reminder that piss me off and your dead. Hahaha
@@bourbon0781 would be interesting to see if gandalf could/would go that far
killing the guy who just reclaimed erabor and thus is its king(lacks the arkenstone but still holds respect and authority in many ways) would not serve gandalf well and may well make the dwarfs perma pissed at gandalf the elfs and the men of laketown/dale
@@scottgrasser9475 he could probably just stun him or immobilize him somehow
“IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY BURGLAR, then please don’t damage him! Return him to me!”
Gandalf yelled calmly
I love how fili and kili care for bilbo and trying to stop thorin.
Thorin’s face at 0:21 is so heartbreaking because he trusted Bilbo. Even though he did it to save Thorin, he feels betrayed 😫
Bard and Thranduil are just down there like, "Dude, this is some intense drama going on up there"
1:30 Gloin is like "oh ffs"
0:33 bomburs face is so funny

You cry in your pillow every night....at this??? Seriously?!
@@ppac300 yes
I think thorin steals the scene of everyone in this third movie
Graziela Almeida i know, right!
Richard Armitage is a brilliant actor
@@wd2642 yep, agreed
But it was Jackson's intent to make Thorin the main character. He said so. You can't "steal" what you were given.
But the dragon still could hear and smell him, so it's as good as seeing him
I just finished reading The Hobbit's chapter 17, and it was an amazing chapter. Bilbo's "betrayal" was really well portrayed to the screen. Thorin wasn't *that* agressive to Bilbo in the book though.
I say thorin being more aggressive is a great change from the book. It just shows how angry he is and how crazy he’s become
I find a lot of things were pretty exaggerated in the film but good regardless
That "But what thief?" Sounded like Smaug. Amazing. Dragon sickness manifesting? 😱
@@mawborne3820 hah lol almost.
I loved how much Bofur, Fili, and Kili cared about Bilbo.
Damn, Thorin had tears in his eyes when he thought Bilbo betrayed him. 😢
You are changed, Thorin. The dwarf I met in Bag End would never have gone back on his word, would never have doubted the loyalty of his kin
"Do not speak to me... of loyalty!"
That line always hits me when you hear Thorin's anger though he was still corrupted by Dragon Sickness.
@@fredrydmusic1"Throw him from the ramparts!"
I adore the variety of voice work in this clip! Richard voice ohhhh 'it is a rouuuse' xD and 1:50 reminds me of when I bought a dress online and it doesn't fit and the shop be like 'If you do not like our dress please, do not damage it. return it to me...' xD
I'll always love these movies!!!
XD
I wonder what thranduil and bard were thinking coz they looked horrified
Thranduil was very impressed with Bilbo's courage and honor, or at least he said so in the book. he actually pleaded with him to not throw himself at the mercy of the dwarves after giving up the arkenstone, afriade of their reaction.
Rogue Skywalker yh lol
Don't you mean at the mercy of Thorin?
snowdragon 1910 when we going to fuck
@@rogueskywalker2624 yeah and i was surprised that even a cold elf like Thranduil was afraid when Thorin tried to kill Bilbo. He knew Thorin has gone too far, and his reputation would've been DESTROYED if Thorin killed Bilbo.
What Gandalf really said: "Release Bilbo or I will transform you in something very unnatural!"
Love how the Dwarves actually defend Bilbo on this one. They didn't see it as an act of betrayal, they knew Bilbo was trying to help Thoris who has indeed changed.
At 1:33 Thranduil and Bard were like
“What the f*ck man.”
The tears in Thorin's eyes are heartbreaking
Like his real self trying to break through the madness, but only succeeding in releasing tears. Kinda like the housekeeper in Get Out.
1:22 is he crying??
yes
Yes x2
He's no longer himself.
He's heartbroken 🥺
I don't care who, but any of the actors in this scene should have won an Oscar at least! Yes these films are flawed but they are still magnificent and almost perfect! Why don't people appreciate such hard work anymore?
KT NI Lady I do not want by any means to sound rude , but this is no Oscar-worthy acting. I love Tolkien's World and the Lord of the Rings movies, but I have to admit that the Hobbit movies were a pile of shit.
Thanks and when you say Elf, do you mean my profile picture? xD
Vid0907
I'm not blaming the actors, or Peter Jackson, just the producers, and the studio.
There's some brilliant acting, as I said in my original comment, but the story just isn't enough to make a trilogy from, and it shows in these movies - the parts drawn directly from the book are amazing, but the "filler" stuff made up to stretch the movies is garbage.
The Tauriel, Legolas, and Kili love triangle, the confrontation between the White Council and Sauron, the character Alfrid (in its ENTIRETY!), all these things took these movies from great to "meh", imo
is true thorin and bilbo deserved an oscar
I just cant handle the broken expression on Bilbo’s face when Thorin calls to throw him to his death.
He doesn’t even look scared at all. He was always prepared for the fact that he’d be in peril. It’s a look of pure heartbreak, knowing that the Thorin he knew would never demand such a thing, and thus he’s truly lost Thorin.
great acting by martin and richard
Thorin Oakenshield is such a great character, even better in the movie. Richard Armitage deserves to be more popular.
2:19 bro you cant hate bofur, after gandalf wants him back he just says in such a concerned voice "go". he cares so much for bilbo
Great timing as always gandalf.
“A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.”
1:49 - Thorin was all fire and fury until he heard Gandalf talking in that *voice* and stopped dead in his tracks. He at least had the good sense to not risk provoking an already agitated Wizard, haha.
He probably sensed the power radiating off a literal Maia and that made him snap out of it, at least a little bit.
@@12classics39 Yeah, I'm sure when he *really* wanted to, Gandalf could let someone FEEL just how dangerous it could really be to risk provoking him, haha.
I don't care that these movies had certain flaws, still love these.
So do i💓
Same asf
There did have some good moments
Honestly, I agree, hell, even when I first watched them, I knew they won’t be in the standards of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy BUT they are still great movies
Martin is probably my favourite actor ever, everything that he’s been in, from what I’ve seen (Fargo (The Series), Cargo, A Confession etc) he has never ever disappointed me with his acting, he is always spot on and he is amazing, it blows my mind how good he is.
I love that during this scene, a rendition of Smaug’s theme plays, showcasing Thorin’s descent into dragon sickness more.
The look Bofur had during 1:41, it's like he was thinking, "don't you dare hurt Bilbo"
It must be something extremely terrible, something so vile, that men who were once willing to follow their leader to the death, now stand against him.
Honestly! The dwarfs in the background are so good, one of my fav moments is at 0:45 Bombur like looks down and is totally thinking “shits about to go down”
Love this moment
"I will have no more dealings with wizards or shire rats!" 🤣🤣 That line is funny
Bofur still looking after his little hobbit.
So adorable!! Bofur and Balin seemed to be the first ones to really like Bilbo. Bofur always is the first to ask, "Where's Bilbo??"
But when that same person yells at you, its stunning and terrifying.
the tears in thorin's eyes when he finds out that bilbo gave them the stone gets me EVERY TIME richard armitage is such an amazing actor
Bilbo is a true friend. At least thorin saw that in the end
For sure
One of my favourite scenes in The Hobbit Trilogy. Thorin and Bilbo's chemistry was just so fantastic.
My heart just stop as Bilbo confesses to Thorin.
For some reason I remember, after Thorin demands that Bilbo be thrown from the ramparts, one of the dwarves saying "Thorin... It's Bilbo"
The ending is beautifully flawless bofur was so beautiful and soft at the end
1:50 Anyone else keep coming back for this line?
Lol yes
i swear to god i liked thorin, but at this particular moment i wanted to jump into the screen and knock the living daylight outta him. (but i guess i dont need to do that anymore--)
the way the dwarves eyes widen at "I may be a burglar but I like to think I'm an honest one" fucking hilarious
Bilbo Baggins🌟The Hobbit - Legend🏆👍🌟🌟🌟🌟
It's an interesting scene because the dwarves agree that whoever holds the Arkenstone is "crowned" and would in theory have the allegiance of the dwarf families. Bilbo throughout most of this movie acts the ideal of a king more than Thorin: risking his life for the greater good, cherishes the living more than treasure as seen in the acorn scene, and seeks his friends out for advice. And when he held the Arkenstone he was technically King under the Mountain.
Maxime Saindon you're absolutely right there
This movie wasn’t the strongest in the trilogy, but goddammit, scenes like this are what save it for me.
You know what more terrifying than Thorin in this scene
It's the dark change in the voice of Gandalf when he was trying to save Bilbo he's like if Bilbo dies every single one of you will die with him
It's amazing how when Gandalf's voice booms, it's like Gandalf tries so hard holding back his true form from coming out. Hes still a Maiar and an istari. Very powerful beings.
I love these movies, and this was probably one of the most tense scene in them
I love Bofurs face at Thorin he's like wtf is he serious right now
The rest of the company musta known Bilbo had done the right thing
I love how all the dwarfs stopped Thorin from throwing bilbo off the ramparts.
Only just realised Gloin's helmet is the same one his son Gimli wears in Lord of the Rings! Nice touch.
Richard Armitage is such an underrated actor. His performance as Thorin is absolutely phenomenal.
he did what a true Friend would have done. I laught hard i am a thief but a honest one
Wiktor madsen and the little head gesture he made
1:30 Bilbo's hurt look. 💔😢
