0:16 I love how genuinely happy Smeagol looked when Bilbo said he wanted to play. He's been alone in the Misty Mountains for 500 years and finally a real person comes along who's actually being kind to him and wants to do some riddles. And yeah, he also wants to eat him, but at least it’s the closest thing he’s had to a friend since he found the Ring.
I recently started reading the Fellowship of the Ring and gandalf makes such a heartbreaking point about this moment. Since Smeagol was not much different from a hobbit once, those riddles connected him with a tradition and a culture that he knew. That this little part of him was still there, hiding from the ring. I just made myself so sad.
In the books that was literally a horror scene, it was terrifying. In the movie they made it a little more funny but kept the tension, which is very good to ease the situation and then make a boom when Gollum realises he's been stolen his Precious.
The 70's animated Bakshi version of this scene is more like that. There's no hint of the Smeagol childlike personality. Gollum is creepy as hell in that version.
Well interestingly enough originally it wasn’t, it was a sort of like the movie’s scene. It was actually a scene where bilbo beats Gollum at riddles and then Gollum gives him the ring as a reward, but then he wrote lord of the rings and re-wrote this scene entirely for the re-release that coincided the lord of the rings release so it would be more in line with those stories.

I love how Gollum symbolizes Smeagol's fears and anxiety, when Bilbo mentions that he indeed does want to play, Smeagol comes out and is very happy. But when Smeagol starts being thrown tricky questions, he fluctuates between the two characters.
All of Gollum's riddles stem from his isolation in the mountain and the ring's influence on his mind. The mountain is where he's been trapped by it, the wind is what he heard before he entered the mountain, and time is what has lost meaning to him, due to the ring extending his lifetime.

This is a bit unnecessary scene since Gollum was always gonna try to kill him and obviously Bilbo was never gonna let himself eaten just because he lost a bet. But building up tension nicely rather than having just another chasing scene.
yeah, it is one of the tricks the films use to make the character of Smeagol more appealing compared to Gollum. One of the other ones being the voice. Great catch!
It makes him look more innocent than Gollum; between the two, Gollum is more conniving, sly, and overall unpleasant. Narrowed eyes often give people that impression, especially if the narrowing is obviously intentional. ‘Innocent’ figures in media like television and cinema often have dilated pupils or eyes in general, to make them seem more adorable/relatable/pitiable. Sméagol is the more trusting of the two, with a better nature, and the dilation of his pupils underlines that. We feel sorry for Sméagol and his predicament, and we can feel that more clearly when contrasting him to Gollum.
@Johnt Schmichal I did not say that I believed Sméagol to be innocent. You’re only proving my point, as was the point of the character. Feeling bad for him was intended, and no matter the character trait, the intention was so, as produced by Tolkien’s hand and the film. The special effects of the film make him seem that way, to lure the viewer into a false sense of security, as Frodo was, in a way. The contrast is a distraction; the obvious ill-intent of Gollum is a diversion, so the two, with the same ultimate goals, may achieve them, most notably, acquiring the One Ring. Also, there is only evidence that Sméagol was corrupted by the Ring, as he did evil, as we saw, only after seeing it. I know not of solid proof to show that Sméagol was evil before encountering the One Ring.

1:00 Such masterful acting/animation. You can see that Gollum is considering jumping Bilbo now that he's put his sword away, but Smeagol wins the argument and he becomes cheerful again and starts the game. It's such a subtle change on his face but you can easily understand exactly what is going through his head.
0:43 - 1:00 I love Gollum's tone of explaining the obvious to Smeagol that they'd eat him and then how Bilbo seems to consider whether to play or not. "...if I lose I get eaten; if I win, there's a chance he won't keep his word and kill me anyway; if I refuse, I have to fight him and even if I win I still don't know the way out...guess I really have no choice." Also, very polite of Smeagol to let his guest go first!😆
In the book Gollum actually said “we only has six” referring to his teeth. I love how happy he was when he figured the riddle 😍 his reaction is cute also the way he add an S to every plural, handses, eggses, Hobbitses 😂
I’m gonna be quite honest! I love BOTH The Hobbit films and the LOTR films. However, the LOTR films are objectively better. If there’s anything I absolutely love about the Hobbit films it’s Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage! The Middle-earth series is definitely a series I’ll always love and cherish!
I love how when Bilbo offers to play a game of riddles, saying "Just you and me" Gollum/Smeagol looks around and whispers "Just-just us!" As if there's anyone else who might feel left out and want to partake in their private game.
I think he says that because he needs Gollum in the game, to win. If it was a game of riddles between just Smeagol and Bilbo I have no doubt Bilbo would win easily, the addition of "Gollum" (the cunning, clever, malicious part of Smeagol) meant his chances were far better
Honestly, one of the best scenes in the entire trilogy. The dynamic between these two is epic. Actually 2 of the best scenes involve these two. The other one is when Bilbo chooses to show Gollum mercy.
Smeagol in this film is a CG master piece. The best CG and motion capturing I've ever seen. The detail on his skin, his eyes, his expressions. It is an achievement in film history in my book.
@@VinthechadI love how you can see his thought process on his face. First he is stun-locked by the brazenness of Sméagol telling the price of losing, then he wants to object, stops himself and considers the absurdity of how he even got into this situation and that death probable in any outcome he took. “… Fair Enough.”
I love the desperate mumbling in the end of this scene where Gollum guesses "fish bones, shelles, batwings"... it says a lot about his whole world of reference for the last 500 years if he thinks Bilbo might be carrying batwings in his pocketsess 😂. A hilarious moment in an otherwise very dark scene 😄
Gollum had already asked the first riddle before the game started, which is why Bilbo has the last riddle and Gollum says ‘last chance’. If Gollum had gotten that one correct they would have tied.
I know the Hobbit films aren’t very good on average, but this first film honestly came a lot closer than the others to capturing the charm of the book. I think this scene is genuinely a great adaptation, just two great actors being allowed to just act out the excellent interactions between Bilbo and Gollum. It’s genuinely incredible that this is the same trilogy that included that awful romantic sub plot or all those video game action sequences (one of which this bit sadly had to share screentime with!)
Gonna be honest, yes I know the Hobbit overall wasn't as good as Lord of the Rings, but boy when the Hobbit nailed it in scenes like this one, perfection.

I feel so bad for gollum, can you imagine being cursed, killing your cousin, living for 600 years, having a split personality, wanting to eat things that are alive? Couldn’t imagine
Gollum's "That's not fair, it's against the rules!" reminds me so much of playing board games (like Monopoly) with siblings and friends as a kid and constantly arguing about "house rules"
I LOVE Andy's hand-animated performance in LoTR. I really do. But this Gollum is better. Goes to show motion tracking really is the new rotoscoping. Gives a life-like accuracy to the movement that you don't get with key-framing, no matter how good the CG artist is.
I know they lit the scene to display the incredible job they did with the animation and Serkis' acting... But just to see what it would've been like, I watched this scene with the brightness WAY down, to the point where it was difficult to see more than very dark glimpses and close facial zooms. Gollum feels MUCH more intimidating when you feel like he is capable of moving around in the darkness with ease while Bilbo should be struggling to see at all. If you've ever been in a cave you know that ANY light is honestly unrealistic, but even the book describes Bilbo as being able to see the green glint in Gollum's eyes. I felt that a tiny bit of light, just enough to where it is still pretty difficult to make out what you're seeing on screen during this scene, felt the most like I remember imagining when I first read the book.
In the book Bilbo won on a lucky accident. With the time riddle, Gollum was about to call himself the winner, and Bilbo, wanting more time to think, simply burst out "time" in a panic, to which Gollum got angry at him saying the correct answer, and Bilbo just went along with it

"...if I lose I get eaten; if I win, there's a chance he won't keep his word and kill me anyway; if I refuse, I have to fight him and even if I win I still don't know the way out...guess I really have no choice."
Also, very polite of Smeagol to let his guest go first!😆
I feel like he was more taken back by gollum wanting to eat him whole. He seemed confused how gollum would manage to eat him whole
3:05 gollums thinking is incredible
In the book Gollum actually said “we only has six” referring to his teeth. I love how happy he was when he figured the riddle 😍 his reaction is cute also the way he add an S to every plural, handses, eggses, Hobbitses 😂
I’m gonna be quite honest! I love BOTH The Hobbit films and the LOTR films. However, the LOTR films are objectively better. If there’s anything I absolutely love about the Hobbit films it’s Martin Freeman and Richard Armitage! The Middle-earth series is definitely a series I’ll always love and cherish!
Well jackson only wanted to do 2 movies, they forced him to stretch it to 3 and rather last minute
@@disturbed157 i would have rather seen guillerma del toro do the 2 films as originally planned
@@StrangerBlocks yeah Del Toro has a thing for practical effects too so I think they would also look quite a lot better.
@@grandmasterkaiju3821 ya there is an interview of him nearly crying talking about how he didn’t make them and saying it’s like being widowed
I first loved the hobbit then lotr and to Tolkien their creator.
You can really see so much of gollums dual personality in this scene it’s incredible
Honestly, one of the best scenes in the entire trilogy. The dynamic between these two is epic. Actually 2 of the best scenes involve these two. The other one is when Bilbo chooses to show Gollum mercy.
I daresay it's the best and one of the few good moments in the entire trilogy.
gollum is an old man and a child at the same time and his expressions are amazing
4:36 The way he said *”Times up.”* was literally so menacing and terrifying
Time...Time, the answer is Time.
for me that was his cutest moment of all time.
Smeagol in this film is a CG master piece. The best CG and motion capturing I've ever seen. The detail on his skin, his eyes, his expressions. It is an achievement in film history in my book.
"If Baggins looses, then we eats it whole. :)"
👁👄👁
"Fair enough."
That part always makes me chuckle every time. Martin Freeman's body language & expressions says it all
*loses
@@VinthechadI love how you can see his thought process on his face. First he is stun-locked by the brazenness of Sméagol telling the price of losing, then he wants to object, stops himself and considers the absurdity of how he even got into this situation and that death probable in any outcome he took.
“… Fair Enough.”
The calmest response ever😂😂😂
I love the desperate mumbling in the end of this scene where Gollum guesses "fish bones, shelles, batwings"... it says a lot about his whole world of reference for the last 500 years if he thinks Bilbo might be carrying batwings in his pocketsess 😂. A hilarious moment in an otherwise very dark scene 😄
5:45 this is a nice detail included from the book. Bilbo also had his hand in his pocket when this happens and he quickly pulls it out
As tense as this scene is, it was nice of Gollum to let Bilbo go first.
Yeah that's a big advantage. Although I think that was Smeagol, because he was so excited about the game
Always loved the bit at 2:49 where he calls the question nasty 😆
The cgi in this movie is incredible. Gollum's skin looks very real
I love his face when he say "time's up" 🤷🏻♀️ 🤭
You pretty 😊
“Teef? TEEF!!! Yes, my precious!”
Teef
I got 1000000000 teeth
2:09"Oh, oh! We knows! We knows!
Shut up!" 😂
But we, we.. only have...nine!
@@havenspringer lol
Gonna be honest, yes I know the Hobbit overall wasn't as good as Lord of the Rings, but boy when the Hobbit nailed it in scenes like this one, perfection.
6:07 - Me when I ask my mom for McDonald's driveby but she passed over it
LMAO!
I love how Gollum throws his murder weapon rock in a tantrum, and Bilbo reacts to it like a bemused parent telling off his grouchy kid.
I live the delivery of the line “if baggins looses we eats it whole”
And then Bilbo's response
@@eryvac0074 fair enough! 😂😂
@@alexandermacdonald499 meanwhile, in his head: (in a Texas accent) "we sure as hell ain't in the shire anymore"
“Is it scrumptious??” in Gollum’s voice! OMG 😂❤️
3:06 me when im taking a dump
0:11 , I love this shot of Gollum becoming Smeagol.
I have not watched the movies, but read the book, everyone said this scene is iconic and this scene was exactly how it is described in the book
Probably the best scene in the entire trilogy. Which isn't saying much
expressions on gollum's face is precious.....
@5:41 you must give us 3.
“Holds up 2 fingers” 🤣
He held up 3, though, didn't he? Half his hand isn't on screen
2:08 best part of the movie hands down...
absolutely, made me laugh out loud all by myself! 😂
🤣🤣🤣
I love the egg riddle just cause Gollum went from murderous charge to excited hearing the riddle and then to thinking deeply of the answer....
and the subtitles in this video give a very different answer lmfao
at 5:00 , the second time gollum says : Ask us !!
it always give me chill, such a great scene and great performance.
that was so funny
This scene was more captivating than the whole battle of the five armies.
It was my favourite chapter in the book. I'm happy to see it's my favourite moment of the Hobbit trilogy. Peter Jackson really nailed the scene.
1:32 this is a cool premonition on how gollum is about to call bilbo at, when he finds out what's inside Bilbo's pocket.
4:09 is close to the book:
“Is it nice, my preciousss? Is it juicy? Is it scrumptiously crunchable?”
Tolkien, J.R.R.. The Hobbit: 75th Anniversary Edition (p. 77). Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Kindle Edition.
It's amazing how clever Smeagol is.
*Handses!*
*Nothing!*
"that's not fair! it's against the rules!" lmao gets me every time
0:36 The way Gollum says he's gets to eat Bilbo if he loses is hilarious!💯😂😂
Gollum is cute in an ugly way whenever his mind switches to Sméagol
He’s definitely adorable.
His facial expressions are so cute. 😂❤
GOLLUM IS SO CUTE 😂
I feel so bad for gollum, can you imagine being cursed, killing your cousin, living for 600 years, having a split personality, wanting to eat things that are alive? Couldn’t imagine
Well he basically just became a junkie. He does not care about anything real as long as he stays alive somehow and can get high over and over.
They excluded the last part of the last riddle. It also said “slays king, ruins town, and beats high mountain down.”
No, I heard that part of the riddle here.
This and Bilbo's conversation with Smaug are the two best scenes in the entire trilogy
Gollum's "That's not fair, it's against the rules!" reminds me so much of playing board games (like Monopoly) with siblings and friends as a kid and constantly arguing about "house rules"
Yeah, the Sméagol side of his personality is like an excited little kid or happy puppy dog.
the emotions are so funny after gollum says give us a chance
Thank you HBO max for uploading this whole. Had to keep watching it in three separate videos.
Gollum is one of the best characters ever created. Definitely one of my faves. I can do his voice perfectly.
'knife'. "Oh Shut Up". Loolll 😂😂
After learning more about gollum and bilbo I’m finally starting to realize how legendary this scene actually is
That was a amazing scene.
What a Great Acting
Lmao at Bilbo using the old "Pick a number im thinking of, 1 through 10!" To win this
I LOVE Andy's hand-animated performance in LoTR. I really do. But this Gollum is better. Goes to show motion tracking really is the new rotoscoping. Gives a life-like accuracy to the movement that you don't get with key-framing, no matter how good the CG artist is.
The bones surrounding his "lair" are super creepy, like he doesn't even bother to just chuck them in the lake. He doesn't care.
2:42 He said bulls**t 😂
4:35 love the calm, casual "times up ¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
1:10 get yourself someone who looks at you like Gollum looks at Bilbo
Someone who looks at you like food?
@@hercules2606hd he seemed inlove with it
Look at how happy smeagol gets when bilbo says he had love to play with him
Subtitles: "AXES!" HBO showing their incompetence once more.
*Smeagol:* "Oh, oh, we knows, we knows!"
*Gollum:* "Shut up!"
Best scene in Hobbit series
Gf: why did you stop?
The 10 second guy: 4:36
Bruh this made me snort my drink
I don't get it
@@abhinavsumesh2549 performance on the bed. You know........
I love the way Gollum’s face kept changing as he thought of an answer
I love the accuracy with the fact that Bilbo only accidentally asks him what's in his pocket then goes with it
"Eggsies... grandmother taughts us to sucks them!"
It hits differently when you think about how long Smeagol's mind was enslaved by the ring.
I like how Gollum just melodramatically whines in annoyance when he loses to Bilbo. That’s actually a pretty human reaction.
Andy Serkis is a god for playing Gollum so perfectly
Smeagle: EGGSES

Gollum is the only fictional character that can give me insomnia and anxiety attacks in the middle of the night.
Why? I find him adorable in a weird way
