Smaug is secure in his strength, so he talks to his victims while making near-misses as he does with Bilbo.
His attack on Lake-town shows that he's very capable of killing large numbers of people. Imagine now, if you will, what sort of disaster Smaug might have inflicted on Rohan and Gondor?

Well considering smaug is very intelligent he was more curious about what Bilbo is then following his killing instincts. Dragons in Tolkien's lore are manipulated and new formed souls. Who knows what pride slug smaug was before he became a dragon. Also smaugs very sadistic character explains by itself, why he spared Bilbo's life so Bilbo can see him destroying lake town

I don't know either. all Tolkien dragons are evil; being made by melkor, Sauron's master. Smaug isn't even very strong, or big, look up ankalgon the black for that. Smaug seemed near impossibly powerful but that was more because everyone else was so weak, a first age army would have been able to kill smaug with few or no casualties. Off the top of my head I can remember powerhouses like finrod fellagund, beren, and several maiar kicking ass.

    • @zlobzor
      @zlobzor 9 місяців тому +95

Kinda. While they did motion capture, the data was pretty much useless. Human and Dragon physiologies don't match at all.
However, the animators did use Cumberbatch's performance as reference. His acting inspired the acting in the dragon's animation. Which was key-frame animation, not motion-capture.

Whenever he talks about the dwarves or Oakenshield, you can really hear the disgust and anger in his voice. I love those small moments when Smaug's anger gets the better of him, he's so multi layered in his short screen time. He's extremely intelligent, narcissistic, psychopathically playful. And yet at the same time he's quick to anger, impulsive and overconfident. The fact that the dwarves "dared" come to his home and face him makes him leave that home he's been comfortable in for 60 years to commit mass slaughter, just to satisfy his fury

That's terrifying honestly, when movie creatures reach a certain level of massiveness there's almost a safety to it, like it's huge but it means you can hide like a mouse in a hole and maybe move around it and it has to find you like a person trying to find a fly that's stopped buzzing. I even thought it was kind of silly that Smaug says there nowhere to hide, the complex is huge and surely there are plenty of places he wouldn't be able to break into, but if he can "sense" where you are with his scales then it doesn't even matter if he can't see you because he can starve you out and will feel you when you try to sneak by. Thanks for the nightmare fuel

This guy was MADE for the big screen. I had an awesome teacher who read the hobbit to my class when I was in the third grade, a year before these movies came out. I was so exited to see trailers for the movie coming out. When the end of the first one teased Smaug, I couldn’t wait for the second one. When I finally saw this in the theaters at 10 years old, it was a truly awesome experience. He looked even more awesome than I imagined, his thundering voice was so loud that the whole theater shook and it freaked me out! That first "Well..." is so powerful. Even with the fact that talking dragons are rather common in fiction, and that it wouldn't be a twist if you're at all familiar with the book, it's still an awesome moment because the whole buildup in the movies made Smaug out to be nothing more than a crazy wild animal. But what's the first thing he does after waking up? Speak in an inquisitive voice; conveying that this is not some mere mindless beast, but a highly intelligent creature in just a single second

I love Smaug so much, makes the second movie so much more enjoyable to me, I enjoy quoting him due to just how amazing his lines are. All of them are just perfect, he's a cold, ruthless beast, he put it best: "I kill where I wish. WHEN I wish!" and "You care about them, do you?? Good. Then you can watch them DIE." He is a monster simply by nature, and he's *loving* it. My second and third favorite quotes I can say by heart. "I am almost tempted to let you take it. If only to see Oakenshield *SUFFER.* Watch it destroy him...watch it corrupt his heart- and drive him MAD." and "I will not part with a single coin! Not. One. Piece of it!!" They encapsulate him perfectly, he's the best villain in my opinion, he's such a threat to everything that he comes across, he's confident he's unkillable, he's steady and methodical until his anger gets the best of him. He's the perfect mix of intelligent creature and animalistic beast, they NAILED him in the movie.

The other Valar created languages for their followers or adopted language from the Eldar.
Sauron devised Black Speech as a means of unifying the orcish tribes under his rule and likely as an ecclesiastical language in the lands he'd subjugated or cajoled to his side.

This! I was always a tiny bit disappointed that Jackson just decided that all of the dwarves of Durin's line were just...weak-willed and could fall into some kind of gold-madness, when this portrayal of Smaug just made it seem so clear that he could've done as Book!Smaug did, and laid a curse on the gold. In general, the Hobbit film trilogy felt _less_ magical than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, when the actual book always felt moreso. Middle Earth is a world of much more subtle magic (unless you're an Istari or other Maiar) than many other fantasy settings, but The Hobbit is full of it. That none of that was leaned into in the films, particularly the idea that a dragon's mere presence tainted and cursed the treasure it slept on, and that Smaug in particular had just kind of deliberately sunk all his malice into the treasure of Erebor...I was so disappointed.

I've become so used to smaug talking that whenever i hear him roar, it feels like a fever dream.

9:47 and the arrow missed, smaug killed everyone and lived happily ever after. The end.

Smaug hyping himself up just to get killed by an arrow 10 minutes into the movie🤣

Smaug had survived and conquered his enemies long ago by the time we catch up to him. He's a villain, he had to die.

Smaug is what made this movie and one of the best parts of this trilogy.

How did he deduct so quick that Laketowners conspired with the Dwarves just by the unknown smell of a burglar and an obscure non-referential riddle? He must be Middle Earth's greatest detective!

I remember watching this in imax 10 years ago and they didn’t show what Smaug looked like before the movie came out and smaugs entrance in theatres was an experience of a lifetime

It sounds like Smaug repeats what he hears humans and other races say about him, and has adopted that as an identity. Combining that with loneliness, isolation and greed is probably what made him so sadistic. Or maybe I’m just looking too deep into this.

Too deep. Smaug is a worm of Morgoth; they're all malevolent. Glaurung, for example, went out of his way to make Turin's life miserable.

What a waste to have to kill such a beautiful, unique creature. Smaug and the death of Thraundil’s reindeer moose thing hurt me. That’s a little more magic permanently wiped away from Middle-earth.
