- American television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air aired for six seasons on NBC from 1990 to 1996. It was produced by NBC Productions in association with the Stuffed Dog Company and Quincy Jones Entertainment, later Quincy Jones-David Salzman Entertainment. The series starred a teenage boy from West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, born and raised. He’d spent most of his days on the playground. Chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool and shootin' some b-ball outside of the school. One day he got in a fight when a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in his neighborhood. His mom got scared and decided it was time to for her son to get out of that environment. So, she sent him across the country to live with her sister and her sister’s husband plus their three children in the wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel Air, California. His name was Will Smith. And that goes for the character and the actor.

Janet Hubert created the personality of Aunt Viv, who was a main character. She wasn't just a wife and mother; she was a professor and former dancer. She was funny, likeable, and very fashionable. No dis to Daphne Maxwell-Reid, but as far as I'm concerned, the Aunt Viv role ended when JH was fired. The new, remixed "Viv" was relegated to the background. She had no outside interests, no sense of humor, she was matronly, and she seemed to ALWAYS be mad at Uncle Phil. Unfortunately, DMR's "Viv" is easily forgettable.

Daphne was left down the cold on her character and less storyline plot.
Yes, I felt this mini-doc did Janet a disservice, especially since it's in the public domain the role WS played in effectively blacklisting her and stalling her career (which to my knowledge, he did not deny), the role of colourism in casting a much lighter replacement and purposefully making the 'new' aunt Viv bland and more docile to counter Janet's more sharp and assertive portrayal. I feel this clip largely upholds the over-simplistic, pre-2020 reunion narrative of Janet just being difficult and bitter.
I feel the same way about Jo Marie
forever being the only Harriet.

but Jo Marie was the best.
The original aunt viv would have gave Wills dad the BUSINESS if she was on that episode. And i would have been here for every word. ❤❤😂😂❤❤

This show was a memorable gem for that!
Carlton running around the whole set was an event!!! Even when Uncle Phil made a cameo blooper on Family Matters. The audience and extra’s laughing it up during these times was such a fun treasure.

Fun Fact: Debbie Allen directed the pilot as well as the first official episode of Season 1. She also suggest they name Aunt Viv after her mother, so yes, Vivian Banks is named after Debbie Allen and Phylicia Rashad’s mother, Vivian Ayers-Allen.

Did the replacement Aunt Viv have the same career as the first one?? The replacement would always be home barely going anywhere. I get it that she came on the show after the Nicky character was born so she obviously stayed home to look after Nicky, but even as Nicky grew the Aunt Viv replacement never went anywhere.
@@robertfranks665 I honestly don’t even remember. I barely watched The Fresh Prince after a certain time and for me this was over 25 years ago. I don’t remember much in reruns either. I only know of the Debbie Allen fact cuz I’m a fan.
Just like with family matters, once Janet Hubert left, Vivian had no identity outside of being associated with uncle Phil and always being his sidekick.

Ashley’s performance of MAKE UP YOUR MIND reflects how talented teen Black artists were at the time. You can tell how much the actress, Tatiyana Ali, and her counterparts Monica and Brandy studied pure raw talent of years back like Whitney, Patti, Aretha, Chaka, etc. Yes the comedic focus in that scene was on Will and Carlton’s antics as her ‘back-up dancers” but her look on that stage was my main focus and felt it was the epitome of the 90s youth- high vibrational smoothness with a damn good voice to match. I’m glad there’s finally a full version of MAKE UP YOUR MIND on youtube since it wasn’t available during her KISS THE SKY debut album era.

The 🥇 Aunt Viv was the ♑🐐 GOAT. She had her OWN identity outside of her husband and just relatable on different levels. The 🥈one was so drastically different in terms of personality, no disrespect to the actress.

It's a shame, coz the lite skin aunt Viv is a great actress, She and her husband(the dad from Sister,Sister) were very proactive for Black actors union. But it was obvious They cast her for the wrong reasons. Colorism and Will Smith ego.

It was so sad to hear Janet Hubert talked about how she received more affection from James Avery while playing her character Vivian than her own husband. She was pregnant at the time and it was emotionally draining for her. I guess that's why she was perceived as being difficult.
But in the 2nd season it started right there while Janet wants to take Will's spot

I still see Uncle Phil as the crooked cop in Flesh. Daphne Maxwell Reid says she offered the role of Aunt Viv first but she didn’t want to work with a rapper! Her Aunt Viv character was more of a friend to her daughters than a mother. He never kissed Jasmine Guy when she played his love interest.

I remembered watching the first few seasons of the show. I think Alfonso did a Pepsi commercial with Michael Jackson. I've been watching Bel-Air(the reboot). The first season was fine but the second season has some meaty storylines. I hope the 3rd season of the reboot comes back next summer.
