I used to love Mr ballen I stumbled across you by accident..I use stories to go to sleep, love your stories so I subscribed thanks for the great stories
HOLY CRAP!!! You have completely jarred me this evening with #7….There I was, casually listening, when I heard “Henry Snodderly.” He was my great-great-great-grandfather, and I never imagined I’d hear our often-told family story on this channel. I guess I didn’t realize this was a famous case. Thank you for covering it!
My husband James and I love listening to your show. You have the art of storytelling down to a science J.D Your voice is like a lullaby that we never get tired of hearing Thank you for what you do .. truly one of a kind we love ya God bless
I’m so happy I stumbled by your station! Even happier about the stories being told currently. I’m not sure what else you tell stores about but my goodness your voice is absolutely perfect for these stories.. I am most definitely a new follower of yours!! Keep up the great work!! Back to the story.
It's okay J.D. I didn't have anything else to do this evening. Haha Go ahead, put out another 3+ hour video, I dare you... Cause I'll watch it too. Have a great week my friend! I'm headed to cedar Creek State Park for the week.. I need a break from the real world. Interestingly enough, the people I need a break from are going with me. Hahaha.
J.D.: Overall generalization: excellent music throughout. Excellent visuals. Good sound effects. Really just a paramount epic! I appreciate the time it takes to put this together. Thank you. Keep on!
Hey JD. My family is from Smyrh County Virginia. Saltville... We have been out of state since 2014 and we are so homesick. Your stories bring us closer to home and those we miss. They motivate us to get back home where we belong. Keep them coming! And Thank you for what you do. Story telling is an Appalachian art.
JD you are one hell of a story teller i was emensed through out the whole 3+ hour's. It feel's like im in the story in a sense. Keep up the great work you deserve a heck of alot more subscriber's i see this channel in the Ms for sure. These can also be short movies/show's cuz the stories are captivating to say the least!!!👌👍
Hi JD! I’m sure you put several hours making this video. Such a historic video should be seen by everyone. I’ve learned so much from your content and I do appreciate the time and dedication you take in sharing with us. Have a blessed weekend!
Thank you Willow! I've worked on this one on and off for a while now and finally got it put out. It was all my computer could do to export a video this long... took a solid day to upload to UA-cam!
I love this story teller and all these great old tales!!! Awesome history! I’m from Western PA but I love the Appalacian area and hope to move someday! Keep em coming!! 👍💯💯💯
Listening to this in Carlisle Cumbria England absolutely brilliant love your true life stories of America back in the day thank you from across the pond Carlisle Cumbria England
gotta love stories like Billy Deans, where he constantly is arrested for armed crimes and trying to kill people, he escapes custody and gets a minor slap on the wrist each time
New fan here.like as of today and i am really enjoying your stories. I live in kingsport Tennessee so its cool to hear some old stories about the Appalachian mt
I can’t tell you how much I love your content (was born and raised in Mingo Co. in West Virginia) but I have a lot of medical issues so I spend a large amount of my life in the bed or hospital. I recently had surgery and the Dr tells me it’ll be 4-6 weeks in bed and 4-6 months to fully heal. So I love these long videos and the subject matter. 👍🏻
JD, As always thank you for the history and entertainment. I wonder where you get your information from? I know you do a lot of research, thank you for that! Do folks write you about their family experiences? I used to listen to my great grandma & granddad tell stories. It you’ve got a great show. Yes I bought the book and soon plan to subscribe as a Patreon.
19:22 I live in Morgan County, TN. About 20 mins from Oakdale and 25 from Harriman and 10 from Wartburg lol. My papaw was a prison guard at Bushy Mountain State prison. It still blows my mind that I haven't heard some of these stories but it makes me happy that someone is telling them.
I live in ala lower south milton fla is bout 10 miles from me I luv these outlaw stories enjoyed It 😊better than a book😊been to Tennessee luv the true stories I'm from atmore ala born n raised n atmore ala 😊
im glad you enjoy the stories my friend, I do my best to bring them to life and make them better than a book. Yet, folks contact me from all over the world wanting a book, since the vast majority of the planet doesn't watch UA-cam.
I am so enjoying your stories. My parents are from the mountains and many of the last names in your stories we know. I sure wish my parents were still here so that I could ask them how they are all related... because you know, everyone down there is related one way or another 😂
Wow. First account is a summary of early 20th century prosecution and sentencing. The process was much more swift and definite. Older relatives of mine who worked as emergency room physicians through the late 1940s to early 50s in the city of Pittsburgh told me that they saw and treated a steady flow of men injured in knife fights, but never saw knife cuts "across arteries". Knife cuts were always " straight down" to avoid arteries. Reason was that guys with knives knew that a severed artery could result in a death, and very surely, execution in the gas chamber. The time between sentencing and execution was really very short, in comparison to our time now, with our appeals process extending across years. Into the 1950s a convicted murderer had just a few short months to try his/her luck with the appeals process. This video ( first story) is also 0:03 interesting for the description of community involvement, in the chase, capture, and trial. Different times and different attitudes. Thank you very much for this presentation
Ole smokey sparked 4 in 32 minutes. I like the fact that the condemned exhausted their appeals in 2 months. The amount of appeals and time allowed to the condemned nowadays is ridiculous. I think 10 years is more than enough time. Also I am not opposed to these sentences being carried out publicly.
Why was the entire clan pardoned 10 years later?! Btw, I love Blues music and appreciated the music you chose for this video. Have a great weekend. Take care and stay safe out there.
3 1/2 hours cool but I'm watching a little at a time on breaks while I'm weed eating before it rains again. Aww out of weed eater string and I don't have a new roll. 🙂
I got a story for yall. In the 1920s my great great some odd uncle named Doc Wilson (his real first name has been lost with time) opened up a shop near the Nantahala. He was wounded in Argonne-Muese and he lost his arm just past the elbow from shrapnel. He didn’t drink nor did he partake in women but he liked to play cards and had a little room in the back of his shop where men from town would come for Poker games. One night he ran a boy off for cheating and apparently he came back the next day and beat Docs wife and killed his dog swearing Doc owed him money for that game. Well after that Doc sent home his wife every night and waited for the boy to show his face. When he finally did, the boy stabbed doc and thought he killed him. But my uncle didn’t die and he held his guts in and shot the boy in the back of the head. Lit his pipe up, walked down the road to the house AND SOWED HIMSELF SHUT. My granny used to tell me that one. Thought it was cool and I’d share. By the way the boys last name was Milsap. Go figure.
I’m not sure how to get in touch with you or if you done video on Abingdon Va behind courthouse is refurbished cabin if memory serves me it was blacksmith at one time I think there’s plaque there it was wolf creek something went on there sorry we done work on courthouse and there’s older man who’s lawyer owns it I’ll try to find more information on it but it’s beautiful place there’s Al’s 4 big walnut trees that’s been there over hundred years sorry for so little information
@01:03:30 Leo Burt has remained at large and is still on the FBI wanted list since 1970 with a bounty of $150,000 for a bombing leading to a death of a physics researcher, Robert Fassnacht
The story I read stated that Frankie may have killed her husband in self defense (to keep him from killing the baby and Frankie). However, the courts in N.C. (at that time) did not allow self defense to be used by any woman; plus, Frankie was not allowed to say a word in her own defense. My mother was born in North Carolina in 1918; and, she had never heard the story about Frankie Silver until I handed her the book I had finished reading (The Balled of Frankie Silver, by Sharyn McCrumb). Johnny (Charlie ?) Silver's body is buried in more than one grave (because it took a long time to find all his body parts). Frankie wasn't a big woman. It is believed that someone cut up the body and hid the parts in many places in the woods. Because Frankie had no rights (as women have today), we may never know the real truth of this story. This gives the old song "Frankie and Johnny" a whole new meaning. There are many version of that song. Even Johnny Cash did his own version. Each researcher has written their version of what they think happened. However, in this video I heard Frankie Silver called "BITCH" for the first time. Frankie was a young wife, new mother, not well educated, and assumed to be alone with her baby and drunk husband when all this happened.

Americans love tee shirts and great stories
I got a story for yall. In the 1920s my great great some odd uncle named Doc Wilson (his real first name has been lost with time) opened up a shop near the Nantahala. He was wounded in Argonne-Muese and he lost his arm just past the elbow from shrapnel. He didn’t drink nor did he partake in women but he liked to play cards and had a little room in the back of his shop where men from town would come for Poker games. Why wouldn’t they have a bridge to get over the river? Was it to far to use a couple trees?
