Pull out when about to spill
Keep it in when you don't plan on spilling.

Some free advice: always make sure you have your fill
Port loose before opening your drain port. It sucks to find out your fill port is seized or the plug is stripped after you drained all
Your fluid.
Watch the video back you'll see the oil I did do that. Also it's not a big deal just rotate the drain plug 180° and it becomes a fill plug
@@DIRT-BOSS why give wrong advice then? Always loosen fill or level port before loosening the drain port. most good mechanics know this...
@@silencer9112 if you know how much it takes it really doesn't matter what hole you use to fill it. If it takes 10 liters or 20 liters just throw I'm what it takes.
@@Deere2154D okay, and what if you only have a drain and fill plug, and the fill plug is seized? or what if you don't know how much it takes?
@@silencer9112 it's supposed to be changed every 2000 hours for one so should have some sort of a record on it, for starters. It's called a notebook for a reason. Even Google might be able to tell you how much it takes by googling size and model and looking up capacities. In a world with technology and and almost infinite knowledge at the tips of our fingers it blows my mind how stupid people have become.
I always open the fill plug to release any pressure (caused by either the ambient temp rising or having the finals hot/warm from using), if there’s pressure in there and you loosen the bottom one first, that shit will blow all over you and make a damn mess...
I hear ya I loosen both top ones first just didn't say it in the video
@@DIRT-BOSS yup. The problem is some untrained personnel will do as said… and get rustproofed. I personally like to vent it first. You know. Seals can go bad and fill it to the brim…
Even though he wants you to do the bottom one first you better crack the top one loose first to ensure once you drain the fluid you can fill it back up nothing worse than draining it and then you can't get the fill hole open
The last time I checked the final drive rotates 180° fill the drain hole.. 💥
@@DIRT-BOSS correct but you can use the same procedure on any differential or crankcase anything that has to be drained and refilled and in those cases you can't flip it over so you better ensure that the fill hole is able to open I know in your case that it doesn't matter
I appreciate keeping it clean as much as getting it done quick. So much nicer when there's no mess to clean up after
Yes sir
I'll probably never need to utilize this helpful tip but thanks for the video anyway.
You're welcome man You never know
Love what you said, "Sometimes it just doesn't have to be difficult !" And you know that's true. Seen several of you guys having to change the FINAL DRIVE. Makes changing the oil so much more beneficial. Wonder how many viewers will be changing oil in something thanks to you showing the path? Good job & Thanks for another. Sonny
Thanks Sonny for sure

Wonder if that dbag is going to thumbs down this video too. Great tip brother!
Hahaha
When you remove the bottom plug first there may be a chance of the oil squirting out and getting all over everything because there may be pressure inside the housing. It is better to remove one of the top plugs first in order to relieve pressure. You can screw it back in after that to slow the flow down when you pull the bottom plug if desired. I usually don't.
Good point that I didn't explain but I did do that those top ones were already loose as you saw
There sure as hell shouldn't be no pressure in there. It aint a hydraulic system, just a simple gear oil bath. If you got pressure. There u got problems!
@@toddreynolds8875 The pressure comes from a change in temperature. There is no natural vent to the atmosphere. There could either be a vacuum or a positive pressure differential depending on the ambient temperature because almost half of the internal volume of the housing is free air space.
Great video Dirt Boss! Planetary drive is super power on equipment needs the good clean stuff!👍😎✅
Definitely 100%
I love how ur not a know it ALL. Simply showing ur perspective on things. What a simple way i would've never thought of. Thanks man
Hey thank you for commenting I appreciate it
No gimmicks, plain and simple instructions. It's a 👍🏻 from me, and I haven't even got a 360!!!
Thanks man All my videos are like that No games !
Short and sweet maintenance is key to success
Thanks
Good way to do it. Have a great day.
Yes it is
Not trying to
Be rude or anything good video I am a heavy equipment mechanic as well and I would not always say do bottom plug first. In certain options machine that’s been running all day long and the operator has to down it for the service I recommend pulling the top plug first to release all the pressure From in the final drives or you will get one good surprise pulling that drain plug first.! And also I would recommend after fluid drips out the level port put level plug in and let the fluid settle and then check again sometimes after letting the fluid settle you are actually able to add more!
Absolutely All good points there I did open the top port to let the air out I just didn't mention it in the video as you can see they were loose.. Thanks
I'm a forklift mechanic, if any gearbox fluid came out looking like that, the gearbox would die soon. Those diggers must be quite a bit tougher.
Yeah it always comes out like that it's an aggressive unit
Everyone track I've done looked exactly like this.
This isn't a car's differential or truck's transfer case, but it's good practice to at least loosen the fill port first. If for some reason it won't come out then don't drain the case. My point isn't exactly apples to apples here, but close. I wish my differentials and transfer cases were this easy.
I hear what you're saying but if you watch the video back the top two were already loose and oil was coming out I always released that pressure didn't have time in a 59 second video to state that it's just common sense.. also on a final drive it's not a big deal if the top plug is seized because you can rotate the final 180° and fill it the bottom plug which will be on the top at this point.. bada boom bada bing
I will never need to do this but appreciate the wisdom none the less.
Thanks man
I can smell that from here.
💯
Tip...drill a hole in the top of the drum it will make the fluid come out quicker as it lets the air out :)
Yup
Should always unscrew the middle level plug as you can then tell if the level is too high, it will indicate mixing with hydraulic fluid meaning the seal inside the final drive is busted.
Good point but a well-maintained machine you should know your machine
Mike, Excellent video. I just changed my final drive oil using your method. It couldn't have been easier. Thanks - your the man.
Awesome!
I like you you called the funnel a doobie! 😆

You have to open the drain plug when the transmission is still warm. Then you have a nice surprise.
That was so fluidly done
😂
Thanks. Now I can add this to my resume.
Awesome led me to your subscription!
I like the dubie. Good video. Have a blessed day!
Surprised I didn't see a comment how the original didn't have a catch pan. And yes. I always open the fill port first to release the pressure. Bc if you pop the drain and there's pressure behind it. Then it shoots oil straight out all over your jeans and boots or shop floor. Put a catch pan for the used fluid. Then open the drain.
I guess you'll have to watch the video back closely there is a pan on both sides and the top is loose obviously I did it by hand and you can see oil coming out
Ya. My phone was blurry. Gotta love "high speed internet." I'm sorry. Didn't see the catch pan at first.
@@brandonmorris3717 No problem man A lot of people said there wasn't a pan I think it's cuz it's the same shape as a track pad
Lol. It's funny how life works. So the day after my last reply we were doing an interstate job in fargo. And when I got back to my 336 the mechanics had serviced it the night before and pulled the plug right there. Smh. You could see where they pulled the plug and it squirted out under pressure. With a dry boot print right in the center of the stream. No catch pan. Weird how things in life happen. It's like we speak them I to existence or something.
It smells good too
Absolutely
I don’t own heavy machinery like this, but at least now I know how to change the oil! Thanks
Yeah buddy you're welcome
So basically it's done the same way every oil change is done. Pull the drain plug and moderate it with the plug or fill cap.
Yes sir
No bullshit, no clickbait
Exactly 100% on my page
Easy way. Thank you for sharing.
Welcome
Great video, but in my opinion you should always loosen the fill plugs first because if you drain the oil and cant open the fill plug you cant put new oil in, have had it happen to me a few times already.
Me too In the past just rotate the bottom plug 180° to the top and fill it..
@@DIRT-BOSS jesus fuck why did i not think about that😅😅
@@aapoaunola2080 lol you can't believe all the comments saying the same stuff nobody thinks just a rotate it
Awesome 👍
How often do you Changing the oil in the final drive?
I know from site work you don’t measure miles done or fuel consumption as the answer is just yes. So do you just do it annually or every 1000hrs of run time or something else?
I do it every 500 hours or as needed if it was really hammered
Why can I smell this video? 😂
Exactly !! It is so smelly My mother actually called me and said I smell propane Leaking.. the wind was blowing 1000 ft over to her house ! Hahaha
Question here can anyone tell me why you need the 3rd fill port above the level port? Cus could you nae just fill it from the level port and be done?
Yes some final drives only have two ports The third port is because in that configuration the gears are out of the way and you could fill it more efficiently
Where's Dirt Boss?😥
Simple and to the point Dirt Boss. That's a maintenance item that is often overlooked, but very important! No one wants to pay for new or reman final drives!
Yup i hear that !
Thank you for showing and teaching, that makes for an easy job down the road.
Yes sir Thanks for watching
How many litres in each side on these 160s?
My dad was a diesel mechanic and seen an apprentice stick his finger in there when another guy started the excavator with the bolt in the final drive. Lost his finger up to his first knuckle.
Wow I can imagine time to drain the oil again !! 👉
I would prefer to at least check that the top ones can be loosened before even thinking about removing the bottom one. What if they are stripped or seized up in there
I did watch the video back
Great information Boss!
Thanks Dave
Don't open the bottom screw first.
If the system is under pressure, you take an oil bath.
That happens to me...
I get that part I had the top ones open to release the air first if you look at the video you will see they were open I just didn't mention it should have but I only had 59 seconds to do a short
U forgot to advise if you change the 🛢filter it needs to be full before putting it back because the oil won't get their fast and it will show lower level
No filter
You need to loosen the top one first and that way it’s got a vent then put it back in and then do the bottom one because sometimes they’re pressurized and it’ll blow that plug out of your hand
I did
If that fd is pressured you got problems
I don't know anything about the machine you are working on but yes I like the video it was relaxing to watch.. ❤👌
Thanks man
You forgot to mention the most important part for not making a mess. Crack the very top one first to relieve any positive pressure in the final drive before following your procedure.
Mike I'm Telling ya the timing on this one is just freaky...I was planning on taking my D5 Dozer to Price Chopper in the morning for some 2 for 1 Red Peppers, But I knew I had to change the Final Drive Fluid First......And Low and Behold here you come with step by step instructions for just what I need to get me some Nice Sweet Red Peppers. Mike, You might not be there when I need you....But Your always Right On Time⏰....Thanks For being You Buddy 😉
😂 That was great !
@@DIRT-BOSS Would you expect any less❓
I tried to do it after watching this video but ended up covered in oil and didn’t get any in the drive. Can you make a more detailed video next time please. (Sarcasm?)
😂 👍🏼
Nice
Thanks Frank
Wish I could do that with my push mower.... I finally learned to put it up on blocks and stick a tube in the hole.... drain down to the pan. Makes a one rag clean up sized mess.
My neighbor uses an oil sucker. He still makes a mess. Takes him longer to clean the sucker than it does me, to clean off my mower’s deck.
Boss, if you have advice on how to do that.... I’m all ears!!!
Your method works just fine!
I had a Jeep with a horizontal filter. Right under it were 2 cross bars. The oil chsnge was always a mess. I got so mad that one day I just cracked the filter loose and I took a large nail and punctured the flute along the bottom in one spot. I turned that nail to point down and then removed it. With the filter cracked just a bit, the suction was broken and the oil came out the nail hole. I could aim it so it missed the 2 bars and went down to the pan. Took longer to drain but cut the mess down to minimal. I would open the filter a bit more as the oil drained. By the time I spun it off it wasn't full. Stupid design.
@@leahwhiteley5164 pretty clever! Thanx
I would use the fill port to regulate flow, just in case someone over filled it....
Gotcha
i was changing rear diff fluid on a subaru years ago and opened the bottom drain before trying to open the fill drain above it....to my surprise the top bolt was seized and could not be opened...now i had a drained diff without a way to fill it.... i now know to try opening the top fill holes 1st before trying the drain plug....the opposite of what u just suggested.
Yeah that's because it was a Subaru
O YESSSSS
That's the best way with out a doubt.
Thanks man It took me years of standing there waiting for that stuff and a broken back to come out of the jug to come up with that one
I understand. The only thing I do different is I get the gear oil in a 5 gallon bucket and put a hand pump on it. You can control how much you loose on the top up
@@livingstonexcavation732 Yes that works too
That’s awesome
Thanks man
I need to get me one of those “doobies” 😀
😆😆😆
Always make sure your level and fill port come loose before draining the oil. Had plenty stripped out or siezed. Never want to drain the oil and realize your going to have to guess fill it so it can be used while you go to town to get new plugs
Just like drive units on the forklifts
Good to know
Same way I change the gear oil on the lower unit of an outboard ...
Yup
I change oil for a living on constructing equipment. Your doing it wrong! Top plug first or you will be wearing it if you do it correctly. Which is to change it when hot. Also if you wait till it's burned black like you did, your not changing often enough.
Good to know
Love the filling technique beats pumping it by hand haha. Quick tip though it's a good idea to remove the centre plug first because if you see a decent amount of oil coming out of there and you know you didn't overfill it that's a good sign that you've done a seal.
True thanks for watching
Nah, you should always remove the top one first as you don't wanna remove fluid before figuring out you can't add any
Really You could just rotate it 180° and fill any hole
It's the DirtBoss 😎 yeah buddy servicing up the final drives on the KOBELCO 😎 yeah very important thing to do 👍 🤔 funny went to work with one of my friends today and they had a doosan dx 480 lcv and the left final drive seal's gone plenty oil all over the place even after they fixed it up until we left the place smells of gear oil 😂 Thank U for the great video DirtBoss 💪😎👍
Thank you buddy Thanks for watching
That cambro though..good idea
💯
I was always told to take out the fill plug first. If the fill plug is stuck, you’re kinda screwed if you’ve already drained it.
Why just rotate the final drive to the top and fill the drain plug
It's not a valve that slowing down the oil it's called vacuum.
I get it I was on the spot have to do a short for 59 seconds I said the wrong terminology I said it's like a valve but yes vacuum
I learned something I will never use but I thank you for the knowledge
Thanks man
Good tip Mike
Thanks
Quick and easy....!!! Just don't get that crap on your clothes, it will smell forever no matter how or what you wash it with .😆
Yes sir that is some stinky stuff
No beer consumed? 🍺
Not at all
Use the oil gear ring compressor next time will speed things up for you. Cheers
I don't have one
He said doobie
😎
Never do the bottom first because is you can’t get the top ones out you now have a final drive with no oil in it at all
If you see on the video I had the top ones loose already to let the air out.. also if you can't get the other plugs out you just rotate the final drive to the top and fill the drain plug
And what if you can't get the top ones out? And now you've already drained all the fluid?
Always check your ports I open the top one just to let the air out a bit first.. besides if that was the case and you really couldn't get the bolts out just run the drive upside down to the desired height and fill
Sweet!
Thanks
Nice👍
Thanks Jimmy
You didn't mention to not drop the plug in the drain pan. Lol Otherwise it's awesome!
That's not the end of the world that's the fun stuff so you can get all that stinky stuff on your hands
@@DIRT-BOSS right on!
Don’t u want to be sure you can remove and fill the top plugs before you drain out the fluid
My machine is maintained I know the bolt will come out but yes if you feel that the equipment is bad caution is advised
Yeah no make sure you can refill before you take out that bottom one.
💯
Here I thought this was a new Dirt Boss video😒
New one out
Gotta get me one of those doobies
Oh yeah
A 5 gallon pale with a pump on it is easier to move around than cinder blocks
Nice-a-Nice!
You know it !
I crack the fill plug 1st to relieve any built up pressure
Always break lose the fill plug first tho. If it’s seized and u drain ur oil out ur gonna have a bad day
Just rotate the drain plug 180° to the top and fill it bingo! But I did loosen the top one first You could see the oil and they were hand tight
Yha wouldn't be a bad few seconds just turn your motor to full plug level and fill her.
How many hours between changes?
I believe the book says 500 hours.. I do it whenever I feel it's necessary
After how much hours you change oil?
500 usually but double-check your manufacturer
🏆
👍🏼
However loosen the top one's 1st before you take out the bottom. If the bottom comes out and the top ones are seas up and won't come lose your screwed.
I missed that ,would you do it again? Lol!
