Thank you SO much for this! Most restos on UA-cam are 90s or later; as my 1st mtb (in 1988) was a base Rockhopper in Too Blue, this absolutely resonates... 👍 *Edit*: Gorgeous cat too! ❤
I got a 1988 trek mountain bike frame. I decided to make it live no matter what. From buying special tools for the bottom bracket to cold setting the dropout it won't be worth $100 to anybody else but it will be mine the way I like it.
👏👏👏In my opinion, keeping the original paint is the only option when restoring these bikes. The bike loses it's soul and history when you strip and repaint the frame. Great job the bike looks happy✌😊
great job saving the original paint I 've done it a few time and it's so much time spent and I'm not very patient so I rush it and does not t come out as good as your
Good job dude. I do the same thing. I have 5 specialized bikes. The oldest being an 1985 stumpjummer in excellent condition all original. Is 16 bike's to many for one person to have? He'll no, peace
Hi Ferris, excellent job with the build. I just picked up the same bike but a 1999, it's in better condition than your bike to start with and it came with a rock shox jett fork. Where did you get the decals for your project? thanks!
Hey, Ferris. Great work on the restoration. I’m rebuilding the same bike, but mine came in much better condition. I would like to replace the stickers, though. Would you mind sharing your graphics files on them? Thanks.
Awesome work! Curious, what rear u-brakes model did you use ? I've been digging through the crates at my local junk shop and can't find any with adequate reach. Enjoy that ride, she's a beauty
Excellent work! Looks great. May I ask what you used to clean the components and frame? One of the comments mentioned thinner. Was their any concern of damaging the original paint? Last question, what was applied at the end? Clear coat? What type? Thank you
Thank you sir! For the frame, it’s thinner. Reason why is because I was removing a coat of paint (the black/silver coat early in the video). For the components, I used petrol. It’s fast, and it’s cheaper than thinner. I used thinner just to get rid of the upper coat. Once I see the original paint, there is where I stop. Then it’s off to sanding. Last step, was clear coat. Just plain aerosol can clear coat. Hope this helps your questions. Cheers!
The previous owner decided to repaint the bike, which explains the silver and black color. Basically, the video is me removing the paint, and saving the original paint that was beneath it. Hope this translates well! Cheers!
Mine was traced from a set i found on Google. But if you’re looking for the original decals, there’s one seller from the US. Can’t recall his account though sorry. Do drop me your email if you want the copy i traced ✌🏼
That black stuff you had to scrape off. Was that tar or chimney soot? Frame looked hopeless until you revealed that beauty underneath. Great job! By the way, a bike repair stand would’ve saved you a lot of effort flipping that around. Bought mine from Amazon for less than $100.
Hi! It was actually paint, very stubborn paint 😂 and thank you so much. Tried my best! As for the bike stand, it was the only thing i have problem getting. There’s always something else to buy when i have the chance 😂
Just search for the bike model + decals (1988 Specialized Rockhopper Decals) on Google. Once you found it, just trace it with photoshop etc. Found mine on Facebook 😅
Exactly what i was thinking when i first discovered it. It was a totally different bike when it was covered with the paint. Time spent was totally worth it 🙂
No bikestand, no workshop, no cable-cutters, no problem!
Beautiful bike, grear effort 👌🏻

Nice job working with resources at hand! Came out great
Top notch work and great job doing your best on the paint!!! glad you didn't sand and repaint! She looks amazing!!!!
Thank you Jason! Made the right choice for not repainting it too!
I had this bike my first mountain bike and it was stolen. Loved it
У вас є почуття смаку та потяг до чудового вінтажного !
Last year did tne same to an '87 Rockhopper I found. It was my first mountain bike and first race bike. Still great fun to ride, even offroad.
That’s awesome! Totally agree on the fun part. Still rocks after 30 years!

Couldn’t agree more! It really does looks happy in some way 😂

It's A big improvement.

Sweet restore! Love your shop cat! Where did you come up with the decals? Thanks Tony
Where did you get the decals?

Thank you good sir! The Stumpjumper must be looking fine! And no, there’s no limit to how many bikes one should own 😂
will take you into old no problems

Hi David! Thank you! Bet the bike looks sweet! Found the decals from Google. Ended up tracing it and printed at a local print shop 😬
@@ferriseidid hi!! Coud you place give me the page were you get them?? (Sorry my inglish is horrible) exelent job!!
Hi Rafael, how about you drop your email, I’ll send it to you.

Hi @Nate! That’s great! I don’t mind sharing, but do drop me your email. Will share it via email.

Que hiciste con la pintura? No me quedo claro, arriba de la pintura original que había? O la repintaste de color original? Contestame, saludos

@@ferriseidid 😃😃😃😃😃
Great work! im restoring the same bicycle, rear drop out 130mm? seat tube 26.4mm?
Thank you George! Yup, same specs 😬
@@ferriseidid thank you
I know this is a few years ago but did you manage to get the paint code? I have the same bike and need a touch up
Sorry unfortunately I don’t have it. Try an auto paint shop they might be able to mix one for you. Hope it helps!
ironically, the atrocious paint job preserved the original color almost completely
nice recovery!
Any idea where I can order these decals?

@@ferriseidid hi! can u email me the traced version? :)
Fantastic job. I did the same with an old road bike, I need to find the energy to restore my '94 hardrock. Where did you find the decals ?? Thanks !
Thank you! I found mine in Google. Yours should be easy to find 😬
May I know what liquid you applied to the canti brakes before rinsing them with water?
@ 11:16
That’s actually petrol! Found it to be the easiest way to get rid of hard stains. And cheaper! 😬
@@ferriseidid thanks bro! I’ve also got a little project of my own. Keep it up!
Sure thing my dude! All the best on your project 💪🏼
what chemical did you used the remove the top paint sir?
I used thinner, sir. Tried using petrol as a second choice, but didn’t get the job done as well as the thinner did.
@@ferriseidid thanks for the reply Sir, great help , I actually have an old specialized hardrock sport 91-92 model.

Thank you so much! I found a set on Google and ended up tracing it 😬

Just search for the bike model + decals (1988 Specialized Rockhopper Decals) on Google. Once you found it, just trace it with photoshop etc. Found mine on Facebook 😅

Why would anyone spray.paint that black. Think it was stolen or a kid did it? Impressive amt of patience on your part
