I agree there are many priests who lead saintly lives and this has been very hard on them. On the other hand there is a culture of not speaking up about abuses or potential abuses. This has to change for the church to begin to heal itself

I wish people on here would stop saying 'Archbishop Vigano supporters are only SSPX sympathisers and conspiracy theorists'. I have heard Matt Fradd, Scott Hahn and Bishop Strickland (all of whom are quite friendly with respectable 'mainstream' Catholic organisations like Word on Fire or Catholic Answers), all express the view that Vigano's claims have some credibility, or that the report just released is flawed in some way. Many Catholics are suspicious. Matt Fradd, Scott Hahn and Bishop Strickland are certainly not SSPX sympathisers, and certainly not conspiracy theorists. Traditionalists maybe, but not conspiracy theorists.
To the people who dismiss Vigano and his accusations as straight out conspiracy and heresy, Cut it Out! Many Catholics want answers to good questions. Let them speak.

A lot of Priests have preyed on people. I knew about such happenings even as a child. My father never let us kids in the Church corridors by ourselves or left us alone in a room with a priest(be it for confession or catechism or any other discussion). A smart man and I admire him for that. He knew about this and taught us kids how to protect ourselves against predators. I was lucky I never had to experience such horrifying incidents. A lot of priests are vipers. Just like John the Baptist referred to the Pharisees. Protect your kids people. The church has a lot of skeletons in the closet. Follow Christ. Never put a priest or nun or any human on a pedestal. You will regret it. Humans are fallible. Even the pope as we've seen from this report and other events(pachamama worship). Follow Christ. He doesn't disappoint. FYI, I'm Catholic.

@@yalechuk6714 Agreed! I mean in the poor in two senses: first, I mean spiritually the Church needs to adopt the beatitude: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God." We need to embrace our complete dependence on God- any good we do or beauty we create is first just a shadow of God's goodness and beauty and only possible as a participation in God's goodness and beauty.
Then literally: the Church as a whole as well as individual parishes are mini-corporations that have to spend most of it's time focusing on finding ways to pay its own employees and keeping itself in existence. A dear friend who is a priest says his "job" requires he spend more time thinking about money then anything else. In my opinion let the Church completely abandon the trapping of a worldly corporation- sell off everything we can. Cast off the comfortable, ecclesiastical lifestyle that creates such a divide between bishops and their work in the Church. Have priests and bishops live in community with each other to support each other and hold each other accountable. Let them live in community with their parishioners so they experience the life of the people they serve.

There is one urgent need -- this interview with B Barron needs to be combined with interviews with Vigano (various including and Life Site News). I have so much time and respect for Barron that it makes it difficult for me to see any gap in the handling of the critique of this report. There are gaps, Bishop B. There is no signed authorship of this report or list of people who may be termed co-authors; there is no interview with ArchB Vigano yet he is accused in this report of not informing Pope Francis of the abuse of McCarrick. There are blatant lies in this report, (and I add unwise because those aimed at ArchB Vigano for example, can be proved wrong), being told in the report which seeks to put Pope Francis in the best possible light. Nor was one of the main abused interviewed. These are not just gaps, they are volcanic craters. Therefore, I suggested above, that the anchor in this interview should have brought all of these things into this interview. Bishop Barron, this report in not admirably transparent at all. I for one, because of my huge respect for you and because as Church, we need you to do deal with these aspects fully. Please, please communicated this comment to Bishop Barron. thank you.

Vigano has rightly been critical of McCarrick and other American bishops, yet many forget that the one person in the United States who could have taken action against McCarrick years ago was Vigano. He was the Nuncio, he was the representative of Pope Benedict and Pope Francis while McCarrick was Cardinal of Washington. Why did he not act then? He had doubts and reservations then. I find this all very bizarre.

I have really struggled with my faith and in the Catholic Church since news broke on Catholic Church priests abusing children. What was most devastating was the Church’s cover up. Just like Watergate. I thought to myself, “Where is the Church’s moral authority”. I went to Catholic School from 1st grade until my graduation from college. We had a priest in my grade school in Philadelphia who was suddenly transferred because of allegations in the mid 60’s. I recently looked him up to see what happened to him and was devastated to find out he was once again transferred back into our parish school in the mid 80’s. I had friends from High School who went to St. Charles Seminary in the 70’s and dropped out because of many seminarians jumping in and out of bed with one another. You cannot tell me that the hierarchy of the church did not know. They turned a blind eye because they were afraid of the scandal. Well they sure got their scandals and lost many Catholics. I ended up going to a nondenominational Christian church. I do appreciate you speaking out about this issue publicly and apologizing on behalf of the church. M. Kelly

The church’s moral authority does not come from the clergy, or the laity, for those bodies are just men, rather the church’s magisterium comes from the inspiration of God and of his only begotten son.
At the end of the day, the laity are just as much a part of the church as any pope or cardinal, our roles and vocations might be different, but we are all Christians, and we are all sinners, and even if some individuals abuse the vehicle of our salvation for their own corrupt and evil ends, that vehicle of salvation is still the church.
To put it more concisely as our friend Chesterton is known to have said, “the Christian ideal has never been tried and found wanting, it has been found difficult and never tried.”

The Church's system must address this dysfunctionality and others, too, perhaps, even evil of the worst kind, like there's no excuse and no more another one so disgusting. The positive side, it seems to me, is that on my part, I get convicted by this embarrassment so much so that in my own little way, I MUST not add more injury to the Church's badly scalded skin. And, Lord, have mercy on Your Church.

When the body of Christ suffers we all suffer, (the church) because we are united in the Holy Spirit....that’s how we are together supernaturally, and we do struggle in it because we’re sinners too...but let’s forgive all, pray more. offer all to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and his mother Virgin Mary who suffered so much for us,and our Lord will guide us protect us and instruct us on this journey. Our personal struggle will be blessed beyond measure!

My 40+ years as a researcher and practitioner in the field of organizational culture, I can ascertain that other sexual abuse cases will take place and that the protocols put into place will be shaped in their application by the «collective pre-disposition to think in a given way» at play (culture). The function of culture is to persist and, every organization has its seeds of death in its cultural DNA. As a catholic, I hold the Church as born out and for resurrection. It therefore is designed for and from the tomb. Currently, my Mother the Church, is in the tomb. We have entered in the tomb where the innocence of abused children lies dead with the body of the Crucified. The Church’s culturally fabricated purity is dead, and, as Lazarus, it smells. Reformed protocols without resurrection will lead to more of the same.

In it he said that he had gone to the church to escape the brutality of life in Dublin, which frightened him in the 1960s and instead seems to have walked into a place of even greater terror. As a result he left and became very bitter and atheistic.
That’s a famous example but it must be so tragic that the place you go to find peace turns out to be even worse.

There must be two adults with a group of children or vulnerable adults. There is too much involved in the system to state here but if an abuse takes place in the Church, the Parish Co-ordinator must inform the PP, Diocese, police, social work or other approprate authority. Reciting the Profession of Faith this morning, I wondered. Do I really (anymore) "believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.... one baptism for the forgiveness of sins"? Why should I remain? The hierarchy of the church has failed so abysmally ... how can we ever trust again? If it is such a 'human institution' as you have said many times Bishop Barron, why should we believe in it?

In one way, he was a highly visible whistleblower, willing to testify and yet he was ignored. I’d love to know why. I think Pope Francis needs to be transparent and respond to this issue.

Perhaps the report is serving multiple purposes, one of which may be to torpedo Vigano in some way and discredit him. Something smells very fishy around his name being so prominent in the report, seemingly to claim (or at least, to strongly insinuate) that he was complicit or negligent in these abuses. Vigano has struck me as one whose loyalties are to Christ and the Truth, however uncomfortable the Truth might be for the church. If this impression is true, and if corruption runs deep within the church at this time, it would serve that corruption to lay some of the stink on a man like Vigano.
But I fully admit my vision here is one of an observer only. I was not a victim of such crimes, nor have I ever been a Catholic. I am Lutheran (Missouri Synod) and these issues interest me deeply. But I am in no position to see these things from the inside.

"Is there a better way the devil can hurt God's Church?"
As a believer for 52 years, I can affirm that the worst problems in my life came from Christians UNWITTINGLY trying to stop me from believing in the teachings of Christ. How many pastors have UNWITTINGLY told a man struggling with criminal sexual desires that castration "doesn't work (it does)" or that it is "against Church teaching?" (No church has authority to contradict it's Founder who said, "If your eye offend you, cut it off!") How many Christians have UNWITTINGLY encouraged someone struggling with greed that they should toss aside the economic models of scripture and everything Christ taught about wealth? Along these lines, I once mentioned in passing "the economic teachings of Christ" to a fellow Catholic.
"What?" he asked. "Christ didn't say anything about money! Religion is religion and business is business."
I could give numerous other examples. In the end, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY word that proceeds from the mouth of God." The number of people who cherry pick or twist God's Word are so common, I wouldn't give a nickel a nationload for them. Even Stalin and Hitler believed PARTS of the gospel. Just as the Pharisees thought they believed in Moses but didn't (John 5:46), so many Christians think they believe in Christ but don't.

I have great respect for you, Bishop Barron. I agree that the system failed. I would also add that our attitudes towards persons of high esteem, authority in the Church and schools, in contrast to our attitudes towards children, had to change immensely. We have much to learn, still. It is only in recent years that child protection laws and policies (in Canada) have been established, with many amendments that followed. In Canada, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was signed in 1990 and ratified in 1991! We must never dismiss abuse as trivial or to be resolved internally - within the Church. We need to recognize that such behaviour as sexual abuse is a criminal act and allows the legal process to decide the consequences for the perpetrator; we, the Church will have fewer problems in deciding what to do. However, just as in secular society, we the Church must work on prevention. There must be a strict assessment in place to eliminate the infiltration of sexual abusers, who will be near a vulnerable population. (Retired Child Protection S.W.)

Let's see if real change will happen. Catholic Church system has been financing and protecting own criminal for decades, perhaps centuries ... Spotlight has revealed serious crimes over almost 2 decades ago, with many others after, but it continues .... Age old system and power supported by the people.
Donations also go towards protecting own criminals ... Many turned a blind eye, including the people contributed to the problem.

Any priest in active ministry (including bishops of any rank) should be goven a psychological test such as MMPI, an FBI-quality polygraph test, police background check, and random drug testing (on an ongoing basis) to determine if the priests are fit for continued ministry. The priests and bishops should be accountable to a board of laity who have unrestricted access to financial records. Every priest should appear before such a board to answer all questions until the board is satisfied with the fitness of the priest.

I disagree on at least two points: 1) the signatures of who wrote the report and 2) the names of those bishops still active who knew but did nothing or who accepted cash payouts. I'm not sure we can just hope to turn the page and move on without addressing those who benefited from M's influence and cowed before it.

The devil made me do it (clearly in the introduction and in reference to not just McCarrick but also to negligent bishops) is not an adequate response to this crisis. Satan is active always, but our giving in to Satan is a free choice. The bishops have failed again to accept responsibility for confronting and correcting their brother who desperately needed sexual addiction counseling and may have been saved if they had the courage of Vigano. An apology is not enough. We won't trust you until your behavior is trustworthy.

Bishop Barron you opened a door for us there. To take the whole ugly episode in a spiritual way. This truly is the Passion of Christ in the Church. Put in this context we see the atrocious attack on Christ and like Him we and the victims feel the moral pain, the desolation, the abandon. Like Him we are degraded as Catholics, laughed at derided mud and stones thrown at our belief.
You pointed out the answer, "look at it as a spiritual situation". That IS the right path to take to make sense of it all
With a good will we can go as far as Christ did :"Father forgive them, they know not what they do"
Tall order for sure but it is the new era, the Paraclet, the Counsellor is there to guide us.
Anger, feelings of revenge, leaving the Church, losing our baptismal gifts would only cause more damage to the Church
giving in to Satan, attacking on the inside....
Thank you Bishop for giving us a true perspective.
