The Dark Night of the Soul

- Friends, what is the “dark night of the soul”? How does it differ from general depression, sadness, or confusion? That's what Brandon Vogt and I explore in this new episode of “The Word on Fire Show.” We unpack this spiritual concept from St. John of the Cross, and discuss a famous saint from recent times who experienced this “dark night” in a profound way.
A listener asks, does God have a sense of humor? If so, is it objective so that everyone should find it funny?

"If a man wishes to be sure of the road he treads on, he must close his eyes and walk in the dark"
~St. John of la Cross
Amen, Sao Joao
True. Only in darkness, you can see the Light❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
“If my petition is not compatible with God’s Holy Will, and what I ask for should not be granted; please pray that I may receive that which will be the greater benefit to my soul..” 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
Oh such grace you have in knowing and being able to express that! Very Petrine!
Amen.
@@walteraymerich176 I'm m
I needed this. thank you.
I really relish watching your videos Bishop Barron. I am in a way a Catholic that has become somewhat more Protestant but your insights are drawing me back to Catholicism.
Praise the Lord🙏🙏...please do not leave the Eucharist for anybody
Love how you Bishop Barron described the closing of the eyes during prayer and contemplation... a good new key I have not always used in going deeper with my Lord . Thanks and gratitude !! Katrina
ProtestChristians were borned about 500 years ago They rebelled against the RCC= Roman Catholic Church of Jesus Christ similar to Lucifer and his gang of devils rebelled against God's Kingdom in Heaven. RCC is Jesus' Kingdòm on earth. Close your eyes and Pray the OUR FATHER
I've had that experience before too but came back to being a much more devout Catholic. I found that Catholic theology is really much MUCH richer than any other Christian denominations'. It's not a surprise when you realize how long this Church has survived and fought varieties of heresies. I really suggest you read or watch St. Thomas Aquinas' and then St. Augustine and so on. So many Catholic saints out there have produced so many intellectual masterpieces that have sealed my faith in Catholicism.
i went to depression. it may not be the dark night of the soul as fr. barron said but it was where i met god again after grieving so much that ive been far away from him for too long. now im beyond that experience and glad god pulled me out in that state and experiencing now his mercy. day by day im praying to find joy and share the love that god has ignited and confirmed during my depressive episodes which i realized its all abt him.
Me too ✋
My encounter with God involved light that enveloped me and His voice saying, “You are Mine.” That was 59 years ago when I was 15.
🥹💟💟💟
what a Great God we have!
Same here but He audibly said to me “Go to Church and Learn all you can about me.” I immediately went to Church and have not stopped learning. It’s embedded in my soul.
I wanted to thank you for your Rosary video's, I've always wanted to say the Rosary daily but I always found that I had forgotten to do it. Now as part of my routine, when I go to bed I load up that days rosary, pop on my wireless earphones and pray the Rosary with you before I fall asleep. Thank you so much for this, it's really a blessing.
“My only wish is to be forgotten
But even that is wishing too much.”
St. Therese
I’m getting so much from your videos, I’m having a bit of a Dark Night of the soul myself at the moment , first week clean from a 17 year pill addiction, all my usual comforts , even food and sleep are absent. The only relief for me right now is staying as close as possible to my Heavenly Father.
God bless you Rachel. You can do this in the Holy name of Jesus Christ. 🙏🏽
Thankyou Guys so much , it means a lot , a month in now, still very difficult, but God is in control, & there’s no going back xx
Hold on daughter, your Heavenly Father loves you and is proud to see you overcome, he will give you the graces to.
Godspeed you Rachel! Definitely not an easy battle you are fighting, stay strong and I'll pray (altough I'm not got at it yet) for you so God can give you that strength. I'm also fighting a couple of dark and ugly addictions on my own, with the help of a friend and mostly important God's blessing I hope I can keep being strong and continue trying to live a better life and growing as a person.
It's two months now - hopefully, your road has gotten easier 🙏 Happy Fourth of July Sunday 💕
Living with too much light . Finally I understand why I’m so decentralized and overwhelmed. In love with God’s will . Jesus please continue to help me navigate this state in which I’ve been in .
I am a novitiate of the Carmelite third order. I am so pleased by Bishop Barron’s comments on St. John of the Cross’ “dark night of the soul” which I am struggling to grasp its significance and reform my life through it.
How many of us think we’re going through The Dark Night of the Soul when we’re actually separated from God because of mortal sin on our souls which we may have forgotten about or are not aware of?
It’s the same with suffering. Most of us who suffer see ourselves as Job. But Job was a righteous man. Are we truly righteous and suffering as a means of high moral testing? Or is our suffering a form of chastisement as a means of bringing our actions back into line with God’s will?
Some yes and sometimes suffering is just for our refinement so we can have a deeper intimacy with Jesus and be a more useful vessel for him. In both evangelical work or discipleship of new believers. We all are caked into the fellowship of the lords sufferings as Paul spoke of in Philippians
Your so wrong! I can tell you never read the book!
Dr. Jordan Peterson’s you tube video popped up in my you tube “feed” while I was watching the Father Robert Barron short videos! If it wasn’t for Fr, Barron I wouldn’t have discovered Dr Peterson. It was also what I consider my favorite presentation of his while in the lecture hall presenting to his students on the BENEFITS OF MARRIAGE’! The best perspective ever. Truly honest and from a psycho-social health and economic perspective.
I love that the Divine masculine and feminine are always working together for our most high good
Always proud of you Bishop Barron. You got it! We love you!
The topic discussion was just so amazing! I have just learned a lot of new things and I even got to finish half of my easter reflection that I will be presenting within our religious community here in Rome this Black Saturday! What's crazy about it was that I found myself sribbling a lot of notes, basically connecting these ideas to Marks' account on Jesus' Resurrection (the Gospel reading this Easter vigil celebration), without having finished the video yet! I just couldn't help myself and was afraid to lose the surge of ideas that came along while watching the video.
Million thanks to you brandon and most especially to Bishop Barron for all the enlightening words and reflections! God's blessings to all those who have watched the video too!😊🙏❤
Excelente, excelente. Una sencilla y comprensible explicación de la Noche Oscura. Gracias
Word on Fire is a gift from above for all 🌍 🌎 🌏 Thank you Lord for the wisdom and discernment you gifted to all Bishop Barron mentors and the people who work right now and in the future in this ministry.
Man, Ive been going down a spiritually rough road with a lot if things but I keep praying and going to confession, mass and many other things trying to knuckle down and graft hard while I hold fast. I laugh a lot, mostly at myself and in a good way. I have long wondered if God has a sense of humor. I always hoped he does so its nice to hear. Thank you Bishop Barron and everyone else involved in this video. The trenches of spiritual warfare have been kinda rough and things were getting kinda low, this just helped boost my morale. God bless y'all.
How are you doing now
Perfect timing for this reflection! Thank you Bishop Barron!
Amen! I love the intro to this video! It is so true! I am thankful for the dark night, so I was able to see The Light, literally. I love the Rend Collective song, Lighthouse! Today, if I ever start to need courage, or strength, I sing, and remember The Light shinning in the darkness. I am so thankful to God for Bishop Barron, and the Word on Fire ministry for talking about this topic.
Listening to Fr. Robert Barron has made my spiritual journey beautiful thus deepening my personal relationship with God. I am learning a lot! Thank you!
Me encantan las hermosas poesías de San Juan de la Cruz! I visited his tomb in Segovia a month ago and remembered this show while I was there. Thank you for your teachings, Bishop.
Bishop Barron & Brandon are the best.
Hello Terry
This will be a good one!
Thank you, Bishop Barron. This was wonderful!
Spanish is my native language. And my husband and I are celebrating 50 years of marriage. Need I say more? 😊
Thank you! Awesome discussion!
Muchas gracias por esta charla, Bishop Robert Barron, desde la tierra de San Juan de la Cruz Necesitamos los cristianos conocer mejor este camino de la noche oscura. Un saludo desde Barcelona, España.
It is definitely way different that depression. It is a good road to travel when you get to the end. But until you do it is so scary and rendering.
In the 1970s the Holy Spirit visited me, unbidden, as I was drawing to a close my reading of the Bible, from beginning to end. I was reading John's gospel. I was suddenly overwhelmed with the love of/for God. I was led to read St John of the Cross. I was immediately elated: this man was so much in love with God. I fully empathised.
Thank you Bishop 😊 enhancing the faith, hope and grace! 🙏🙏🙏
This brings John Chapter 6 to mind. Quite overwhelming.
Thank you, Lord for Bishop Barron for this spiritually enlightening & enriching discussion of St John of the Cross's "Dark Night of the Soul." This discussion truly captivates the heart & soul.
Perfect...thank you, Father, After the joyful mysteries we praise his holy name.
Dear Bishop Barron it is great to hear your lecture .When comes after my pray the darkness when l cant see the stars l feel suffering not only the worlds uptudate problems and Jezus crucifixcion l wait for sunrise and a new day and hope for the be
st and god forgiveness and help.
As a young man I was troubled and saw this book with this title in the discount paperback book for 25 cents! But I was soon shocked to find out that he was not talking about our sad state!!! What he is saying is that after we come to God!!!!! And our comfort drys up and now we feel abandoned! Mother Theresa experienced this!!! And it lasted most of her life!!!
I love how BB describes closing our eyes, is a way of darkening our senses to the world, to convene with God, never has this occurred to me as I close my eyes to pray, I've just done it unconciously.. But what I love even more is how he describes closing our eyes to the world, the world is good, "we're not being puritanists.. Don't go down that path..." .. He's so right, his words are always absolute truth, and his delivery which is uniquely his own God given gift, is always true, real, authentic and humorous! Talents are nothing unless put to good use, put to God's use and for God's glory, which BB does, he's the only person on the web that can talk for hours without my getting a headache! God bless you Bishop, I pray the world will have you for many years to come 🙏🏻
To be honest, I've not delved into St. John of the Cross, so questions & commentary by both Mr. Vogt & Bishop Barron were very helpful to an understanding & appreciation of what his real meaning of "Dark Night of the Soul" is. I also appreciated that you had mentioned Edith Stein, as someone you admired. You hit a very positive nerve w/me, since she is one of my "heroes".
"Reformers are not super-popular with those they are trying to reform."
No truer words!

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ 🙏 Mother Mary Pray For Us 🙏Abba Father Bless us and we Adore You 🙏Holy Spirit Guide us and direct our paths 🙏
Thank you so much Bishop❣ St. John of the Cross is my favorite saint.
I understood your explanation of "the night of the soul" the expression of the soul being in love to the Lover of our soul and the Lover of our soul showing the soul His love.
And yes, God has a sense of humor💕
Thank you Bishop Baron for explaining, elaborating and illuminating concepts and ideas which are hidden, unclear or hard to grasp it is very important, God bless you abundantly !
Just exactly what I was wondering 🙏🙏
If you speak Spanish I highly recommend an album on Saint John of the Cross' poems from Jesed "Silencio de Amor" ...you can find it here in UA-cam...Abundant Blessings
Jesed, the best.
Thank you Bishop Barron for the excellent insight on why God takes away our consolations and worldly attachments -- for a higher form of love. Always enjoy your WOF show with Brandon. May God bless you both.
Every weekday morning, I fire up my kindle, search Bishop Barron Rosary and pray along with him. I love his descriptions of the mysteries and am enlightened every time I re-listen. Thank you so much.
You two are so alike. The smiles on your faces when bishop Barron described what to do when God removes a consolation from one’s life is truly revealing of your preferences for the head to the heart journey. In the midst of the pain I experienced when I lived through such God-initiated removals, the intensity of darkness was such that asking myself the question you proposed would have appeared to me as interruptive to the darkness as so aptly described by bishop Barron. What worked for me: First take the pain, stay with it without investing in it, let the question emerge from it, then live the pain in the question and just listen. I so love both of you as my dear brothers and ask God to bless your ministries.
Levis Shalom
Very inspiring especially on St. John of the Cross' Dark Night of the Soul.
I also thought that the 'dark night of the soul' is something of a period in life where someone is experiencing anguish for the sake of spiritual refinement oriented to God. I don't have much knowledge about saints, or philosophy, theology, and definitely not poetry.
It is interesting because there are Christians who fill their senses with music, minds with words, and hence emotions in their search for spiritual encounter with God, and I suppose that is totally different with the spiritual concept of darkening the senses and the mind to connect with God who is beyond the physical world.
But without knowing and acknowledging God, deep meditations and inner purge of the senses are quite meaningless, because the goal is then oriented to oneself and not to the ultimate reality of God, the very Being of being.
I know that sometimes God will come to us anytime, anyway, in whatever way He chooses; even when we are filled with emotions and not in deep prayers, but again I think the most appropriate way of encountering God is to empty oneself of material desires, and conflicting minds, and to let the Holy Spirit embrace us in deep prayers and meditations.
This is very interesting, I have meditated for 2 years straight and while I did discover "treasures" from it, it was ultimately focused on the self. Those "treasures" from my meditations were I guess, "peeks" from God maybe, I later discovered that good ultimately comes from God, and my meditations were merely a tool to understand God better in the end
@@homiesenatep It's good that you find God through your meditations. Christian meditation is focused not on the self, simply oppressing distractions or temptations, but to communicate with God through Christ and the Holy Spirit.
@@JohnR.T.B. I am barely learning catholic meditation, all I know is that I just started the rosary. The zen-like meditation I practiced for 2 years was indeed fruitful, but it was practiced in a state of mortal sin, which limited my view to 'see' God and his blessings. I still practice this zen meditation, but now I pray the rosary and went to confession
the dark night concept certainly has been adopted by the less science-oriented branches of psychology and new age spirituality, but phenomenon that St. John of the Cross describes is very different.
Incredibly well said, even though you mention not having much knowledge of philosophical nor theological tradition, you hit the mark with this analysis - I think. :)
This is one of my favorite videos of yours Bishop Barron. Thank you for making it. :)
Thanks oodles Bishop Barron😊
I always love how Bishop Baron brings deep theological concepts to us in terms everyone can understand. Praise God. In my life, this video comes with perfect timing. We just finished discussing St. John of the Cross, St. Theresa of Avila and the threefold steps to the spiritual life in my Applied Catholic Spirituality class at Catholic Distance University. This video was just a cherry on top of my seminary studies.
Isn’t He just awesome?
This gives me something to think about while growing in the spirit direct me God to where you want me ...sometimes I believe God works different ways with everyone.
Very true
What a treasury of the Holy Catholic Church! How well you share it Bishop! Love your voice, Bless you and Happy Easter! ❣🙏
I am getting ready to try Exodus 90 with a group of guys for the first time. This is exactly the message I needed to hear. Thank you Jesus!
St Karol Wojtyla’s (John Paul the Great) dissertation on Faith in John of the Cross is a great read! I hope more people, especially laymen, will make time to read it.
the analogy at the beginning of the video was perfect. There are songs about it.
Unearthly night
World you fear
Love lies lurking, a wounded dingo-dog
Soon to decease
I have wandered my whole life long
The night becomes my bride and everything else must die
World without end
For me"
"The dark side's coming now, nothing is real
She'll never know just how I feel
From out of the shadows, she walks like a dream
Make me feel crazy, make me feel so mean
Ain't nothin' gonna save ya from a love that's blind
Slip through the dark side and cross that line"
"Listen to the wind blow
Down comes the night
Run in the shadows
Damn your love, damn your lies
Break the silence
Damn the dark, damn the light"
Great. I went to high school at Loyola School in N. Y. a long time ago. and then came back to Argentina. Even so, I can perfectly understand your English as I learned it over there. Listening to you seems to me as if a fellow student or a teacher was speaking to me. If only you had been my teacher!!! About your brilliant and enthusiastic explanations, I can respectfully tell you how "Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris" (Pope John Paul II) helped me a lot. In a catholic school at those times they did not teach us but rather asked us what we thought about issues. That made me really mad and and filled with frustration. Everybody was so concerned about changing the Church to the ways of society... That sounds familiar to me nowadays
Regarding the question at the end, I highly recommend bishop Fulton sheen’s video called “the divine sense of humor.”
My dark night of the soul lasted years and involved an ending of life as I knew it....the problem comes about when one who is going through it is speaking with someone who has no idea but wants to portray himself as an expert....
Oh dear. It's best to be careful who you confide in and who you ask for advice from. It's not that people aren't trustworthy but that very few people actually understand what you are going through or know how to help you. Especially if they haven't gone through the same thing.
Very very helpful
Superb commentary! St. John of the Cross has been a favorite for many years, and this has been the most informative explanation of "The Dark Night of the Soul" I've heard. Many thanks, Your Excellency. A treasure!
Thank you. God bless.
Great explanation!🙏🙏..Bishop you’re spanish is excellent! Gracias!
He says Californianas speak Spanish as well as I does ( not true: I Heard him translate Juan fluently, and it's XVI C. Spanish. Probably has kept it from the tome of Don Diego ( a.k.a as " el zorro")
Bishop Barron, please pray for my surgery I had on my toe that it heals properly.
God doesn't want you to fall in love with his consolations. He wants you to fall in love with his will. - Bishop Robert Barron.
Wow.
St Edith Stein = underrated. Still waiting on the reprint of Finite and Eternal Being~
Agreed, but sadly she was overshadowed by her classmate Heidegger, and the fact that she was a female didn't exactly help either.
@@lukebrasting5108 it's a travesty for sure. It's awesome that ICS has been translating her writings to English recently though. It's powerful stuff. It makes me hopeful.
Goodbless you Bishop
I love this video. On a dark night of my soul I'd rather spend time with someone who cares enough about me enough to tell me the truth when I am wrong. Like if I am about to take on too much when I am not ready for the responsibility before instead then I end up being imprisoned in a closet and regularly beaten or impaled to within an inch of my life too as result. St. Theresa of Liseaux was very wise when knowing what kinds of responsibility she was capable of taking on.
Thank you Bishop for your excellent and profound explanation on "The Dark Night of the Soul".
According to St. Therese "Only hands that are empty find God is all" When we empty our hands, thats when we can receive God.
One of the best explanations I’ve heard regarding “The Dark Night of The Soul”! Such a hard concept to grasp! God Bless you always Bishop Barron!🙏
One of my favorite videos of Bishop Barron. St. John of the Cross is sooo deeply valuable. Don't fall in love with "falling in love with God"....that's NOT the goal. Fall in love with God, NOT the "feelings" or "sense of euphoria" that falling in love gives you. MAN THAT IS SO GOOD!!! It almost seems like we ALL fall into that trap at some point on our "love journey" with the Lord.
So good, thanks so much!
I’m impressed by how effortlessly the Bishop rattled off that response about humor! Pretty much nailed that response, apparently off the cuff.
Really appreciate this video.
Realmente excelentes y profundas reflexiones! Lo disfruté muchísimo. Muy buena lectura en español 😊
Thanks Bishop !
Thank you for a much more logical explanation of the Dark Night of the Soul....
This is one of the most wonderful videos on UA-cam. Inspiring.
Always something deep coming here. It's like lake trout fishing, deep and very mysterious fish that are wonderful to catch - and healthy, too.
Great translation of San Juan de la Cruz "La noche Oscura", God bless You! Dios lo Bendiga
“They don’t sound like Oprah. They are very disciplined.” 😊
Your intellectual strength marvels and challenges me to be better and do more...
saying the dark night of the soul is a struggle is putting it mildly. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
I always am both lifted (by seeing/hearing how high my faith should raise me) and crushed (by seeing how miserably inadequate my efforts are.) I yo-yo back-and-forth violenty from aspirations of sainthood to violent desires of a self-destructive nature and overwhelming sense of failure in each and every sense of the word.
In the first, I give God Everything I am, have or do/did past, present and future and beg Our Lord to guide me to Holiness in following His Will.
In the second, I reject myself as unclean. Therefore, everything I have done, been, etc. is automatically discounted to miserable triviality and blasphemousness.
May God bless you Excellency and protect you and give you more grace thank you a lot
Its in the long and dark and unquenching, unquenchable nights of the soul a man's true purpose, began stop bloom. Though the tunnel in length and much may find many in despair but in its crumble the days is in majesty, may it's pure sun kiss your soul.
God Bless you Bishop, thank you!
Thank you Bishop Barron! My prayer!
Among his millions of accomplishments, I didn't know Bishop spoke Spanish so well !!!!
I think a lot of priests are bi-lingual to some extent.
Thank you for the great inspiration to Life. God Bless you Bishop Barron!!
Wonderful! Trish, Australia.
Is Trish a city ?
I really enjoy your videos, thanks for all that you do Bishop Barron. I miss the movie reviews that you used to do. I recently watched a movie on Netflix I had no idea about called "Spotlight", a true story that happened in Boston. The investigation happened i think in the late 90's or beginning of the 2000's, and the Boston Globe reporters discover a humongous priests scandal cover up that had been going on for years.
Thank you. Thankful.
GOD BLESS YOU FATHER BARRON FOR YOUR INTERPRETATION. THIS IS A BLESS FROM GOD TO UNDERSTAND YOUR EXSPLANATION OF JHON OF THE CROSS. 🙋♀️❤❤✅🙏📿📿📿THIS IS A BIG GIFT.
GOD BLESS YOU. Maria3
Thank God I found you.
Good one! I personally find God in all of nature, Creation, universe etc. the best! I use my brain too but along with.......👍
I'm currently reading dark night of the soul by Gerald G May. Looking forward to this.
Absolutely.
