  • Friends, what is the “dark night of the soul”? How does it differ from general depression, sadness, or confusion? That's what Brandon Vogt and I explore in this new episode of “The Word on Fire Show.” We unpack this spiritual concept from St. John of the Cross, and discuss a famous saint from recent times who experienced this “dark night” in a profound way.
A listener asks, does God have a sense of humor? If so, is it objective so that everyone should find it funny?

I've had that experience before too but came back to being a much more devout Catholic. I found that Catholic theology is really much MUCH richer than any other Christian denominations'. It's not a surprise when you realize how long this Church has survived and fought varieties of heresies. I really suggest you read or watch St. Thomas Aquinas' and then St. Augustine and so on. So many Catholic saints out there have produced so many intellectual masterpieces that have sealed my faith in Catholicism.

i went to depression. it may not be the dark night of the soul as fr. barron said but it was where i met god again after grieving so much that ive been far away from him for too long. now im beyond that experience and glad god pulled me out in that state and experiencing now his mercy. day by day im praying to find joy and share the love that god has ignited and confirmed during my depressive episodes which i realized its all abt him.

How many of us think we’re going through The Dark Night of the Soul when we’re actually separated from God because of mortal sin on our souls which we may have forgotten about or are not aware of?
It’s the same with suffering. Most of us who suffer see ourselves as Job. But Job was a righteous man. Are we truly righteous and suffering as a means of high moral testing? Or is our suffering a form of chastisement as a means of bringing our actions back into line with God’s will?

    • @jessenewman6738

Some yes and sometimes suffering is just for our refinement so we can have a deeper intimacy with Jesus and be a more useful vessel for him. In both evangelical work or discipleship of new believers. We all are caked into the fellowship of the lords sufferings as Paul spoke of in Philippians

The topic discussion was just so amazing! I have just learned a lot of new things and I even got to finish half of my easter reflection that I will be presenting within our religious community here in Rome this Black Saturday! What's crazy about it was that I found myself sribbling a lot of notes, basically connecting these ideas to Marks' account on Jesus' Resurrection (the Gospel reading this Easter vigil celebration), without having finished the video yet! I just couldn't help myself and was afraid to lose the surge of ideas that came along while watching the video.
Million thanks to you brandon and most especially to Bishop Barron for all the enlightening words and reflections! God's blessings to all those who have watched the video too!😊🙏❤

In the 1970s the Holy Spirit visited me, unbidden, as I was drawing to a close my reading of the Bible, from beginning to end. I was reading John's gospel. I was suddenly overwhelmed with the love of/for God. I was led to read St John of the Cross. I was immediately elated: this man was so much in love with God. I fully empathised.

I love how BB describes closing our eyes, is a way of darkening our senses to the world, to convene with God, never has this occurred to me as I close my eyes to pray, I've just done it unconciously.. But what I love even more is how he describes closing our eyes to the world, the world is good, "we're not being puritanists.. Don't go down that path..." .. He's so right, his words are always absolute truth, and his delivery which is uniquely his own God given gift, is always true, real, authentic and humorous! Talents are nothing unless put to good use, put to God's use and for God's glory, which BB does, he's the only person on the web that can talk for hours without my getting a headache! God bless you Bishop, I pray the world will have you for many years to come 🙏🏻

You two are so alike. The smiles on your faces when bishop Barron described what to do when God removes a consolation from one’s life is truly revealing of your preferences for the head to the heart journey. In the midst of the pain I experienced when I lived through such God-initiated removals, the intensity of darkness was such that asking myself the question you proposed would have appeared to me as interruptive to the darkness as so aptly described by bishop Barron. What worked for me: First take the pain, stay with it without investing in it, let the question emerge from it, then live the pain in the question and just listen. I so love both of you as my dear brothers and ask God to bless your ministries.

  • @JohnR.T.B.

I also thought that the 'dark night of the soul' is something of a period in life where someone is experiencing anguish for the sake of spiritual refinement oriented to God. I don't have much knowledge about saints, or philosophy, theology, and definitely not poetry.
It is interesting because there are Christians who fill their senses with music, minds with words, and hence emotions in their search for spiritual encounter with God, and I suppose that is totally different with the spiritual concept of darkening the senses and the mind to connect with God who is beyond the physical world.
But without knowing and acknowledging God, deep meditations and inner purge of the senses are quite meaningless, because the goal is then oriented to oneself and not to the ultimate reality of God, the very Being of being.
I know that sometimes God will come to us anytime, anyway, in whatever way He chooses; even when we are filled with emotions and not in deep prayers, but again I think the most appropriate way of encountering God is to empty oneself of material desires, and conflicting minds, and to let the Holy Spirit embrace us in deep prayers and meditations.

This is very interesting, I have meditated for 2 years straight and while I did discover "treasures" from it, it was ultimately focused on the self. Those "treasures" from my meditations were I guess, "peeks" from God maybe, I later discovered that good ultimately comes from God, and my meditations were merely a tool to understand God better in the end

    • @JohnR.T.B.

@@JohnR.T.B. I am barely learning catholic meditation, all I know is that I just started the rosary. the analogy at the beginning of the video was perfect. There are songs about it.
    Unearthly night
    World you fear
Love lies lurking, a wounded dingo-dog
    Soon to decease
I have wandered my whole life long
The night becomes my bride and everything else must die
    World without end
    For me"
"The dark side's coming now, nothing is real
She'll never know just how I feel
From out of the shadows, she walks like a dream
Make me feel crazy, make me feel so mean
Ain't nothin' gonna save ya from a love that's blind
Slip through the dark side and cross that line"
    "Listen to the wind blow
    Down comes the night
    Run in the shadows
Damn your love, damn your lies
    Break the silence
Damn the dark, damn the light"

Listening to you seems to me as if a fellow student or a teacher was speaking to me. If only you had been my teacher!!! About your brilliant and enthusiastic explanations, I can respectfully tell you how "Apostolic Letter Salvifici Doloris" (Pope John Paul II) helped me a lot. In a catholic school at those times they did not teach us but rather asked us what we thought about issues. That made me really mad and and filled with frustration. Everybody was so concerned about changing the Church to the ways of society... That sounds familiar to me nowadays

Oh dear. It's best to be careful who you confide in and who you ask for advice from. It's not that people aren't trustworthy but that very few people actually understand what you are going through or know how to help you. Especially if they haven't gone through the same thing.

Superb commentary! St. John of the Cross has been a favorite for many years, and this has been the most informative explanation of "The Dark Night of the Soul" I've heard. Many thanks, Your Excellency. A treasure!

He says Californianas speak Spanish as well as I does ( not true: I Heard him translate Juan fluently, and it's XVI C. Spanish. Probably has kept it from the tome of Don Diego ( a.k.a as " el zorro")

Agreed, but sadly she was overshadowed by her classmate Heidegger, and the fact that she was a female didn't exactly help either.

@@lukebrasting5108 it's a travesty for sure. It's awesome that ICS has been translating her writings to English recently though. It's powerful stuff. It makes me hopeful.

I love this video. On a dark night of my soul I'd rather spend time with someone who cares enough about me enough to tell me the truth when I am wrong. Like if I am about to take on too much when I am not ready for the responsibility before instead then I end up being imprisoned in a closet and regularly beaten or impaled to within an inch of my life too as result. St. Theresa of Liseaux was very wise when knowing what kinds of responsibility she was capable of taking on.

One of my favorite videos of Bishop Barron. St. John of the Cross is sooo deeply valuable. Don't fall in love with "falling in love with God"....that's NOT the goal. Fall in love with God, NOT the "feelings" or "sense of euphoria" that falling in love gives you. MAN THAT IS SO GOOD!!! It almost seems like we ALL fall into that trap at some point on our "love journey" with the Lord.

saying the dark night of the soul is a struggle is putting it mildly. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

I always am both lifted (by seeing/hearing how high my faith should raise me) and crushed (by seeing how miserably inadequate my efforts are.) I yo-yo back-and-forth violenty from aspirations of sainthood to violent desires of a self-destructive nature and overwhelming sense of failure in each and every sense of the word.
In the first, I give God Everything I am, have or do/did past, present and future and beg Our Lord to guide me to Holiness in following His Will.
In the second, I reject myself as unclean. Therefore, everything I have done, been, etc. is automatically discounted to miserable triviality and blasphemousness.

Its in the long and dark and unquenching, unquenchable nights of the soul a man's true purpose, began stop bloom. Though the tunnel in length and much may find many in despair but in its crumble the days is in majesty, may it's pure sun kiss your soul.

I really enjoy your videos, thanks for all that you do Bishop Barron. I miss the movie reviews that you used to do. I recently watched a movie on Netflix I had no idea about called "Spotlight", a true story that happened in Boston. The investigation happened i think in the late 90's or beginning of the 2000's, and the Boston Globe reporters discover a humongous priests scandal cover up that had been going on for years.
