The first video game console.I ever owned and still own to this day. So many great games available on it, and over time I was able to play games I never knew existed. Xenosaga, SMT series, Disgaea, Mortal Kombat and WWE games were amazing on the PS2, and there’s the exclusive Transformers game based on the Armada series that is severely underrated. And Dark Cloud is a gem on the console, wish there was an actual sequel or remake.
Same here. Ps2 was my first video game console,i still own it and it works fine and i'm still playing on it in 2020. I've started playing recently Okami and Klonoa 2:Lunatea's Veil.
Start with a Fat PS2 and put a hard drive(Sata or IDE) or SD Card in it via an HDD adapter. If you use an Official Sony HDD adapter you can also play online via network. It also enables you to load larger ISO files. Faster load times and less wear and tear on your optical drive. Also handy if your optical drive is broken.

I softmod my fat PS2 one year ago with Free HD boot (a Free Mc Boot version for Hard Drive) and I love it. I create my own back up directly on my PS2 and I stock them with my Hard Drive 👌. I can also up my PAL 50Hz only game and forced them to run at 60Hz, some game run great like Tekken Tag, but it's not 100% perfect.
some of my favorite PS2 games are: Mana Khemia 1 & 2 (Which i hope gets an HD remake ) the Xenosaga trilogy (Which i hope gets an HD remake ) the first three star ocean games FF10
For the FAT model (which I have) you can use the network adapter for the hard drive and run games form there if your lens is dead (like mine). Sadly, the original one uses IDE HDD, those are hard to find in good conditions or bigger than 160 GB, luckily there are third party network adapters with SATA connections which allows you to use up to 1TB HDD.
Fun fact: I own two PS2s, one North American fat and one Japanese 90000 slim. I only bought the Japanese ones because I have a growing collection of Japanese DVDs.
I'm in the UK.. For TV/Monitor setup I use Component lead for my LCD TV connected to my fat PS2 and RGB connected to my CRT via my slim PS2.. All works perfectly. No upscale devise needed.
I've started collecting games for the PS2 a week ago and it's the first console I've decided to avidly collect for. Let's just say, it was a great decision.

After market memory cards usually works good ( it's a memory chip after all, the board that manages it is quite simple ). I bought a bunch of 128MB cards from Aliexpress for like 10 bucks of something , some of them are in active use by me, a couple others are used as backup for my oldest saves and never used unless there's a problem ( never happened one in almost a year ). Years ago, when my first PS2 dvd drive failed, I bought another used one that still works fine even now. FreeMCboot was a blessing to help me resurrect my first PS2. Now I have a 2 FAT models, both working perfectly except one that has a busted dvd drive, but they both work fine with FreeMCboot. The good one I keep it as a backup if something wrong happens.
If you want to save the disc drive, then use free McBoot and OPL. Then just load your backups from a USB drive. Videos do tend to be a bit sloggish, but most games run fine ;-)

I remember doing all this back in the day when I didn't even own a computer yet. I now use my CECHA01 PS3 for all my PS2 games strictly.
I found my ps2 in a pawn shop not too long after it was released. I was so excited, it looked brand new. I didn't have the money at the time but my mate lent me some so so could buy it. Then I got v8 super cars and played the shit out of it. It look so realistic!
07:53 The Dual Analog Conroller doesn't have any rumble. It's basicly a normal PS1 controller with analog sticks and longer grip handles (best grips ever).
I remember all my friends told me to buy a PS2 back then, but i thought it looked kind of ugly. So i bought a NGC on launchday instead. And we all ended up playing Timesplitters2 in 4 player Splitscreen, so much fun. And amazingly the cube i bought back then is stiil hooked up and works perfectly fine. I'm surprised TXR didn't get a mention (it did start on the DC era first), but most if not all remembers the old PS2 titles. If you like best motoring and all that I highly recommend you play Kaido Battle 2/3 aka Kaido Racer 1 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2. It's an under rated gem.
I enjoy collecting for the ps1 and ps2, mostly to get the games I sold back then and to buy the ones I couldn’t afford. It’s funny you mentioned Grim Grimoire-I lost an eBay auction for that game a few months ago and haven’t tried to go for it again. 😆
I hope they make a ps2-Mini soon( With all the popular games included like BF2, GT4 and great third-Person similar to the C&C series on the other platforms especially if they can revive online servers for 64 persons)
It's so funny this video is called where to start: ps2 My first game console was supposed to be a Gamecube.... I wanted to replicate my friend down the road by getting melee, mario party, and so on. And when I brought the gamecube home for the first day I was so anxious to finally play those amazing games at my home and whenever I wanted, I thought my heart would burst from pure joy. That is until my dad realized the cd tray could only hold small discs and therefore wasn't able to playback dvds. He went back to the store to get a ps2 instead, a system I never knew with a bunch of no-name T-M rated titles I could care less about then because I only ever knew Mario. Knowing the PS2 had no mario games, I was heartbroken and distraught on the long-term to say the least. Little did I know it was probably the best eye-opening decision that could've been made for my young gaming life back then. I would've probably grown up a Nintendo fanboy instead of being as open as I am to all the games I've come to know and love. Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and Clank, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Sly Cooper, and several other games from jampack discs just to name a few. Oh and Super Monkey Ball DX is waaay better than 2 on the gamecube. Makes for a much better collectable. Plus, later down the road, I still know how good Nintendo games are and am still able to return to and love them the same through emulators and all!
@Plokzig A-MAZING. Do you know that beige "zero delay" board? The cheapest one, I believe? Works on it. They have a list on their website, on the product's page, but I think you should check the firware update history for the actual full list. But, all the big ones are covered: Xbox One bluetooth, Ps4, ps3, Wii, Wii U pro controllers
My fist PS2 was modded to play Japanese games bc i was so obsessed with DDR EXTREME and at the time it was only available in Japan I lost about 30pounds playing that game.
@referral madness I remember playing Evergrace, Eternal Ring. RPGs that used the PS2's graphical abilities but unfortunately weren't very good. I played Smuggler's Run , TimeSpliter's and Armored Core 2 also but I'm not for sure if at launch. Armored Core 2 was my favorite of all those games though.
a Fat PS2 is infinitely more useful than a Slim. you can attach a PC hard drive in the back slot, and use Open PS2 Loader to play all your games directly from the hard drive. it has much much higher compatibility than USB or Network streaming does, its extremely simple to use and store games long term, no fiddling with a PC, no swapping or burning discs, and is overall a lot more stable and less likely to overheat or fail. oh, and you can use a virtual memory card to store your save data on the HDD itself, instead of relying filling up actual memory cards. AND, with a Fat PS2, you can install Free MC Boot onto your memory card yourself from scratch, using Free HD Boot. no need to buy a preinstalled memory card online, all you need is the third party HDD adapter and any regular laptop or desktop hard drive. brand new HDD adapters for modern SATA hard drives are available online for like $15 i would HIGHLY recommend a Fat PS2 over a Slim if you intend to mod it.
I remember connecting my PS2 to a HDtv and being totally disappointed. It looked horrible. I now use a small 9" JVC CRT with S-Video and it looks great. As for the difference between S-video and component, the main thing notice is that there is a tiny bit of color bleeding near high contrast areas. But it's not noticeable to me unless I'm looking for it. I believe the colors are also a bit more accurate with component (though to me they just appear slightly more saturated).
When I have the money, I will get an OSSC, some HD Retrovision component cables, a Network Adapter and the SATA upgrade, a memory card with Free MCboot, a multitap, and some wireless controllers. If I had a little more money, then I would change the exterior housing of my Fat PS2.
As an interesting note about the PS2: In terms of power between PS2, XBox and Gamecube, the PS2 was the weakest. On upscaling: You can try early PS3s for that as well.
I fixed many of these Fat and Slim. The best fat version is the 5001 version. As it will load game faster and has the better fan which makes it more silent. Plus it plays a few games other Fat versions don't, like the hidden gem Tomba. As for the Slim version, the best laser and lightest one is the 9000 series. It does not need a power block. Try to avoid the earliest version of the Fat, 3000 series. Those Lasers and laser assembly are different. The 3000R and 3900 are pretty much the same. Some use a different laser but most use the same. Same with the Slim, avoid the 7000 early versions. They tend to break more often. the 7500 and upward are a bit better, but the 9000 version is the best.
I would recommend: Burnout 3 Takedown (one of the greatest games ever made) Every GTA game, even Liberty City and Vice City Stories Def Jam Fight For New York Need For Speed Underground 2 SSX 3 and On Tour Rachet Deadlocked Crash Tag Team Racing
Ps2 the only console to play every different color disc. Purple blue black gold or the mirror looking CD color. Before ps2 came out there was gameshark on ps1 and people modding them to play dvd movies. Ps1 was rumored to play all of its games on 1 disc, it was amazing how people hacked ps1 over ps2 back in the day.
Ok so you make reference to the PS1 Dual Analog Controller and how the rumble doesn't work when used in conjunction with a PS2 console.... the PS1 Dual Analog Controller (which is the predecessor to the Dual Shock) does NOT have Rumble Motors inside it..... I know this as I have one of the Dual Analog controllers in my collection of PS1 stuff. EDIT! it appears that JAPANESE Dual Analog controllers DID have rumble. US and European Dual Analog controllers do NOT have the rumble motor in them just to confirm.
Well, the ps2 library is so huge, there is something for everyone. Here are some personal recommendations though: Dragon quest 8 is just a sublime game. Not too expensive either. Around 15 euros here. Final fantasy X and XII are good picks for your final fantasy fix. Not that expensive either. The burnout series are thrilling arcade racers that are usually dirt cheap. I've always had a soft spot for the ratchet and clank and jax and daxter games. These were popular and shouldn't be expensive at all. The tekken and soul calibur games of course, if you need some fighting games. That's just the very tip of the ice berg. There's 1000+ games released for the ps2.
There is Kingdom Hearts I and II, Jax and Dexter trilogy, Sly Cooper Trilogy, Dead or Alive when it was good, GTA Series 1-3 San Andreas Vice City. Some of them I never played.
I have two Europan PS2s wan is the default FAT and the second is the Silver Slim, I first brought the slim one and its optical eye died after 4~6 years(can't really remember the exact year butt yeet was something like that)and I had2 replace that with a cheap Chinese wan cuz that's de only thing that was available in the local stores and online shopping was.... well(at least in Israel) basically didn't exist, although keep in mind that I was pretty harsh on that poor thing and played countless hours of GTA and PES. I've got the FAT wan second-handed(de slim was factory new from Toyzaras at a complete ripoff pricing) and as much as I know the previous owner, that PAL ps2 was having a hard time at its early years cuz that dude was a hardcore wan, after the Wii arrived it was left in a dark room collecting dust for 12 years and today its working awesome. Just posting this for anyway who might benefit from it in reliability perspective.
Yes, 2 TB is the limit, cannot add more If you're using fat, better install it internally, it's faster than USB (USB 1.0!!) But if you're on slim that's what you're stuck with, USB. But the PS2 needs to be modded, either with MATRIX MODBO 5.0 modchip, or FMCB (up to series 9000x), or the newest yet the beta ones, fortuna exploit.
There's nothing wrong with playing over USB, I'm playing my games over USB and the compatibility is 99%. The games run smoothly and the load times are great. And don't forget to keep your game files defragmented, if you're getting stuck on a white screen while initiating a game that's the culprit.
@@mikimouse3001 How do you manage to not get lag through USB or stuttering FMVs? Very few games don't give me those, and I now currently use the network sharing method.
I really missed the mark on this one. i had a PS2 way late than everyone else, but i remember watching many Cybernet episodes of PS2 games. and my dad's friends had one with MGS2 MGS3 and with RE4, with also van helsing game and 25 to life... When i got it i didn't had much games, i managed to play MGS3, RE4 and silent hill homecoming out of any PS2 SH games, Tekken 5 and some weird GTA game where you start at a military base and that's pretty much it. now all i think about is to play all the SH and Ace Combat ps2 games. and i'm a fan of the PS1 game Devil Dice and i heard that it had an amazing sequel on PS2 called "Bombastic". i hope Sony will finger snap and PS5 will have all those games in an instant.

I hope they make a ps2-Mini soon( With all the popular games included like BF2, GT4 and great third-Person similar to the C&C series on the other platforms especially if they can revive online servers for 64 persons)
My favourites,
Sly 2
Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3
Need For Speed Underground 2
Ratchet and Clank
PES 2006
It's so funny this video is called where to start: ps2
My first game console was supposed to be a Gamecube....
I used to play a ps2 game, who's name escapes me. It was a mecha fighting/shooting game, with a huge amount of customization options.
Armored Core? S.L.A.I.? Gun Griffon Blaze?
I love it
I used to play resident evil 4 all night
Broke 2 controlers playing dbz budokai tenkaichi 3
Good memories
Suggestion dude. If you're going to load games through local network use static IP
PS2 PES and Burnout were insane.
Just bought Xenosaga trilogy black label original for Christmas. A bit pricey but worth it.
3rd party memory cards were really reliable in my experience, don't be afraid of using the ones that you can put SD cards into
I still play my original PS2 a lot and its quite fun. I dont even have an Xbox One or PS4 and I dont need one if I got a PS2, Xbox 360 and PS3!
Brook PS2 converter - Use several different controllers on the PS2.
@Plokzig A-MAZING. Do you know that beige "zero delay" board? The cheapest one, I believe? Works on it.
They have a list on their website, on the product's page, but I think you should check the firware update history for the actual full list.
But, all the big ones are covered:
Xbox One bluetooth, Ps4, ps3, Wii, Wii U pro controllers
Ace Combat and Onimusha
About upscaling you forgot to mention GSM which is also included in FreeMcBoot. It is a free software upscaling option.
My favourite gaming console of all time.
I had to slim ps2s and they started the disc reader started to go weird and stopped working after awhile 😔😔
2 words “ greatness awaits” PlayStation 2 was the best consoles ever. So many hits on it. Who here is a socom fan hit that like button.
My fist PS2 was modded to play Japanese games bc i was so obsessed with DDR EXTREME and at the time it was only available in Japan I lost about 30pounds playing that game.
Thats an awesome idea, getting games to work through the Internet port. Awesome 😎 good luck.
I bought my PS2 at launch. The demand was so high people were getting mugged as they left the mall.
@referral madness Yeah, it was in the news and they were telling people to be careful when leaving the mall for the parking lot.
@referral madness I remember playing Evergrace, Eternal Ring. RPGs that used the PS2's graphical abilities but unfortunately weren't very good. I played Smuggler's Run , TimeSpliter's and Armored Core 2 also but I'm not for sure if at launch. Armored Core 2 was my favorite of all those games though.
i still have the original ps2 the problem is the disc drive doesn’t read anymore
Didn't mention GT4 can output 1080i natively. Pretty cool feature.
a Fat PS2 is infinitely more useful than a Slim. you can attach a PC hard drive in the back slot, and use Open PS2 Loader to play all your games directly from the hard drive. it has much much higher compatibility than USB or Network streaming does, its extremely simple to use and store games long term, no fiddling with a PC, no swapping or burning discs, and is overall a lot more stable and less likely to overheat or fail. oh, and you can use a virtual memory card to store your save data on the HDD itself, instead of relying filling up actual memory cards.
AND, with a Fat PS2, you can install Free MC Boot onto your memory card yourself from scratch, using Free HD Boot. no need to buy a preinstalled memory card online, all you need is the third party HDD adapter and any regular laptop or desktop hard drive. brand new HDD adapters for modern SATA hard drives are available online for like $15
i would HIGHLY recommend a Fat PS2 over a Slim if you intend to mod it.
I have a ps2 as while as a ps3 i love both of them and the ps2 beings back great memories for me!!!
Ps2 turns 20 this year
I have a Japanese phat , PS2 has a great import selection
Yoooo what's the 2D fighting game at 3:47?!
E D I T
It's KOF '98. Nevermind.
They even made age of empires 2 for ps2.
DEVIL MAY CRY SERIES,DEF JAM SERIES,EXTREME G RACING 3,AND GAUNTLET LEGACY
When I have the money, I will get an OSSC, some HD Retrovision component cables, a Network Adapter and the SATA upgrade, a memory card with Free MCboot, a multitap, and some wireless controllers. If I had a little more money, then I would change the exterior housing of my Fat PS2.
Surprisingly Persona 3 looks better than Persona 4 while playing PS2 slim with Component cables on a Samsung HD TV.
Final Fantasy X was my childhood. Last great final fantasy in my eyes
Love the ps2, it had sooo many games and tons of rpgs *~*
I would recommend:
Burnout 3 Takedown (one of the greatest games ever made)
Every GTA game, even Liberty City and Vice City Stories
Def Jam Fight For New York
Need For Speed Underground 2
SSX 3 and On Tour
Rachet Deadlocked
Crash Tag Team Racing
To be honest it was the best because it also played movies. A Swiss Army knife of sorts.
I started collecting for ps2 lol so many good games
6:42 omg yes! atv offroad fury 2 (of 4) had an amazing soundtrack compared to the others imo since, well, I never played the others ^^;
Use component to a RetroTink 2x and pass it through a mClassic. It looks great!
Odin Sphere was a marvel. Its intro song, hmmm so good.
I'm hoping the PS5 will be backwards compatible with PS2 discs.
I can hope, right?
Ok so you make reference to the PS1 Dual Analog Controller and how the rumble doesn't work when used in conjunction with a PS2 console.... the PS1 Dual Analog Controller (which is the predecessor to the Dual Shock) does NOT have Rumble Motors inside it..... I know this as I have one of the Dual Analog controllers in my collection of PS1 stuff.
EDIT! it appears that JAPANESE Dual Analog controllers DID have rumble. US and European Dual Analog controllers do NOT have the rumble motor in them just to confirm.
Im using a ps2 into a retrotink via composite on a 4k tv. Looks great and no delay. Check out the retrotink.
Great video.PS2 is still the best.
Ok i just got a ps2 at a thrift store for 20 bucks what games should i get
Well, the ps2 library is so huge, there is something for everyone.
Here are some personal recommendations though:
Dragon quest 8 is just a sublime game.
@@styno9295 isnt gta san andreas on ps2?
Love your videos!!!
There is Kingdom Hearts I and II, Jax and Dexter trilogy, Sly Cooper Trilogy, Dead or Alive when it was good, GTA Series 1-3 San Andreas Vice City. Some of them I never played.
Well here’s where you start: Don’t put it on its side like in the thumbnail because it’s all but proven to hurt the disc drive over time lmao
Yeah, luckily my ps2 somehow "healed" (it had trouble running discs while in that pose) after i put it back in its original position.
when the ps1 & ps2 stopped working putting them upright gave them some extra life.
I've been playing a lot of Grandia Xtreme on it lately.
Please, someone who explains if it is possible to place a solid external hard disk of 2 terabytes on a Playstation 2. Greetings from Chile! :) 🇨🇱
Yes, 2 TB is the limit, cannot add more
If you're using fat, better install it internally, it's faster than USB (USB 1.0!!)
But if you're on slim that's what you're stuck with, USB.
But the PS2 needs to be modded, either with MATRIX MODBO 5.0 modchip, or FMCB (up to series 9000x), or the newest yet the beta ones, fortuna exploit.
@@bitelaserkhalif If you use a Slim, for the love of god don't use USB. Use network sharing instead, it's sooooo much faster.
@@KacKLaPPeN23 complicated to set it up; cannot use lan multiplayer
Military base GTA? That's underrated GTA Vice City Stories. Too bad Rockstar didn't release it on mobile, its been 10 years!
@@bitelaserkhalif so that was vice city stories ? it was fun, but my tradition is to never finish a GTA game but play all of them, i never understood why would i want to finish up a game when i'm having fun doing other shit than finishing the story.
Who elses watches the reasonable ads for channels they like lol
