Cutting out silicones was the reason my hair couldn't grow past a certain length: it just kept snapping off. I believed that silicones are just the "illusion of healthy hair" for the longest time. It's so good to hear that it's not the case! Also, perosnally, I'd rather live with the 'illusion' than the dry, tangled mess my hair turns into without them.

I went silicone free and only used natural hair products for about a year while trying out the curly girl method. My hair looked absolutely disgusting, it broke off a lot and my scalp was in a very bad condition, oily and itchy. Turns out some natural shampoos can be extremely irritating. Now, about 1.5 years later, my ends are still looking thin because of how much hair I lost back then. I'm back to using Pantene, Elvive and whatever and straightening my hair, and it's growing back healthy and strong. 🙏🏼 I no longer care about what the self-proclaimed hair experts on Tiktok say, most of them don't know a thing.

I went silicone free a few years back for nearly a year thinking it would make my hair 'healthier'. No it got worse. Was always tangled. Broke more and was way drier. I have fine hair that tangles easily so silicones help me detangle easily without breaking my hair. Once I added silicones back in my hair has felt 100x better. My routine now is shampoo/condition with Olaplex. Spray Its A 10 leave-in (has silicones) all over after towel dried. Apply a small amount of Olaplex 6&7 to ends. After I blowdry apply a small amount of Moroccanoil light oil (also has silicones). This routine has kept my hair in the best condition. I also do Olaplex 3 1x a week and also the Olaplex mask regularly as well.

My fine hair was always tangled and hard to style, leading to lots of breakage, but silicone has been so vilified I was scared to go back to it. I finally did some research and realized that silicones are actually helpful to my hair type. I’ve incorporated some silicone products into my routine, and my hair is shinier, stronger and looks better than ever. And since it’s not breaking, it’s getting fuller and longer, too.

Love this video about silicones! I stop using because of the scary stories and the curly girl method but my hair didn't do well without it even tho I completely got it out of my hair. The curly girl method really screwed up my scalp and I lost hair from all that hard scrunching and quit doing it. So now I'm a total rebel. I use whatever I want as long as it's high quality or I think will help my hair within reason and I use heat very carefully......AND I wear my hair straight most of the time because it's easier on me even tho I do have a strong wave. I'm still trying to wrap my head (no pun intended) around the fact that we have all seemed to forgotten that we KNOW how to deal with our hair and what works for us. I have consistently found that when I do things MY way my hair responds beautifully. I think this is what Abbey is trying to tell us. Thank you Abbey!

Thanks so much for touching a little on the curly hair topic. After watching your videos for a while and understanding ingredients and what my hair needs, I started to wear my hair in its natural texture(wavy curly) after probably 15-20 years of straightening, curling iron, etc... It's only been about 6 months and my curls definitely have damage but they're looking pretty nice. Its been crazy to try and figure out what "curly hair needs" with all the info out there for that community. So as usual, I always find my self back to you and your info because it just makes the most sense. Thanks again!

Hi Abbey. Excellent video as usual. I started using the K18 mask based on your videos, as well as products with silicones. The results were great at first but lately my hair became excessively dry. I had been using K18 maintenance shampoo, Redken acidic bonding concentrate, Amica Flash, Color Fanatic, Redken Big Blowout and Olaplex 7 -- all containing silicones. The drier my hair got, the more Color Fanatic and Olaplex 7 I used, until my hair was dried to a crisp. Even the K18 mask stopped working. This morning I tried the K18 clarifying shampoo instead and avoided anything with silicones. To my relief, my hair is back to normal. I didn't recognize the signs of silicone buildup. So if you use silicones, a good shampoo is not enough; a clarifying shampoo is a must. Now I'll be cutting back on silicone products and adding a clarifying shampoo once a week.

Thank you so much for enlightening the public once again! I’m so passionate about this because I at one point was a ‘victim’ of this fear mongering. In 2016 or something, my hair was very long. All of a sudden I got into the ‘no-poo, everything you apply on your body gets in to your bloodstream’ corner of UA-cam. I was shocked and decided to just use a harsh ‘natural’ shampoo bar. It ruined my long hair and after a year or something, I had to chop off everything I worked for years before. I’m not saying that a natural approach is wrong, just that everyone is different and we should consume these kind of bold unscientific claims with a grain of salt.

Hi Abbey several years ago during perimenopause my hair was not doing well - excess shedding, severe dryness, breakage etc and I decided to stop fighting with my natural texture. I transitioned back to curly hair with just some diffusing as the only heat I used on my hair. The youtube curly hair community convinced me to stop the silicones and alternate co washing with shampooing. In fairness the lack of heat and styling tools did improve the condition of my hair. As it was so dry oils work well in my hair and my course/curly hair is in need of weight/taming. I also have a very dry/eczema prone scalp, so greasiness isn't an issue for me. A silk pillowcase and bonnet made a massive difference to the tangles and frizz. As I got more confident in wearing my hair curly and learned how to style it, I decided to try adding back some silicones for styling. I live in Scotland (which is a very wet place) and was constantly fighting frizz, due to all the damp weather. I do clarify and deep condition to ensure I don't get buildup and my hair is less frizzy with some silicones in my products. I'm cautious not to overuse them and tend to just use them in my styling and finishing products, but that's what works for me. Oils and butters work really well in my hair to soften and moisturise. Naturally course/curly hair is fairly often high porosity, just due to the structure of having those bends in the hair shaft itself (although that's certainly not true for everyone). I shampoo every week and if I want to/need to then I would co wash once mid week - a very gentle cleanse to refresh my style (mostly in warmer weather tbh). I use the ordinary scalp serum through the week to moisturise my very dry scalp, whilst adding small amounts of oils/serums to the hair to smooth and moisturise the lengths and ends. Every person with curly hair is different and will find different things work for some and not others. Once all the raging hormones subsided my hair stopped shedding as much anyway, but I'm happy with my curls now and have no need to straighten it anymore. Like parabens, sulphates, anti perspirants and all the other "demonised" ingredients the truth is often different to the fear mongering around them. Best wishes.

I have long fine wavy hair. Lots of it but fine and prone to frizz in humidity. For years I’ve used Aveda Light Elements as my ONLY styling product after good shampoo and conditioner. This contains light oil and silicones. My hair is shiny and healthy. Once a man who turned out to be a hairdresser came up to me and asked if I was using a glaze on my hair. So when I started to hear people demonizing silicones I just shrugged 🤷‍♀️.
I occasionally use a Neutrogena anti residue shampoo.
This all reminds me of the anti gluten bandwagon.
    Good job Abbey! 😊

I have high porosity, wavy fine hair that tangles with the slightest breeze I was doing strictly curly girl method for about 2 years. Initially my hair loved it - my waves turned into curls, I did lots of deep treatments. My hair was full, not frizzy and started developing a natural shine. However, my scalp suffered and my hair growth slowed. I wanted to rebuild my hair from the inside. I recently felt like a got to a point where my hair was healthy enough for me to reintroduce silicones. My hair is now the healthiest I've ever been. No more scalp issues. I invested in the pureology strength cure range and it's the best purchase I've ever made.

My hair is extremely fine but dense and this combo helped me take my hair from armpit length to waist length in about a year because I was able to FINALLY stop the breakage problems while not weighing my hair down. I also should note gentle daily detangling is key- I also switched from wet brushes and tangle teezers to using only a wooden wide tooth comb and a Tek wooden hairbrush around new year. To me, it’s not worth arguing with anyone about, but silicones, as long as I regularly clarify, helps make my dry, thick, frizzy, curly hair much more manageable. But I think your videos prove that both can be true and you should just listen to your hair. Sometimes I put oils in my hair as a deep conditioning mask and sometimes I use a gloss with silicones. I started avoiding silicones many years ago when I used a silicone heavy conditioner and it really weighed my hair down - it looked stringy as soon as it had dried! I wrongly blamed the silicones.
Now I know better ... one of my favorite leave in sprays is amodimethicone heavy! It's not silicones in general that are a problem, it's the exact ones and the formulation. If a formulation is right for your hair, any silicones in it will be helping, not hurting.
By the way, dimethicone comes in different weights, from super light to quite heavy. The INCI doesn't tell you which weight was used. Again, you need to judge the entire product, not just one ingredient.

Silicones can provide ‘Slip’, shine and protection from heat and the elements. They prevent excessive color loss and seal the hair surface controlling water loss and absorption. The downside is they can build up if over used or if several types are used In conjunction with other ingredients and this can leave the hair feeling ‘waxy’. I don’t like them for the most part in my hair because I tend to get scalp eruptions or pimples when they are present.

I am a testament to the power of silicones in hair care! 🙋🏻‍♀️
Several years ago I bought the Curly Girl book, which I think was the main reason why so many curly hair people stopped using silicones was because that book suggested it (among other bad ideas), and while I was never fully on board with co-washing, I was using all natural, sulfate-free shampoos that made my hair worse than ever (I was BORN with frizzy, unruly, coarse hair) and all natural leave in products with oils didn’t seem to do much to help me, because I was washing my hair more often to reduce the oil build up, and sulfate-free shampoos were very stripping to my hair. Now I use products with silicones every wash day (including silicones on my rinse out and leave in conditioner) and my hair has recovered a lot. I feel like the Curly Girl book, while well intentioned, I’m sure, was actually the worst thing that ever happened to frizzy, curly hair care. It almost ruined my hair.

I used to do the curly girl method back in 2019 until early 2020 (my hair had a natural wave and I had my partner chop my hair to chin length) I avoided sulphates and silicones up to march 2020. I also avoided chemical hair dyes cause of a nasty reaction but when my greys started coming thru I tried henna which nuked my waves from orbit (my hair was 2a/2b after a couple of henna treatments my hair went to 1c type) and a lack of silicones made my hair look like I'd been dragged thru a bush backwards and always greasy at the roots. So I purchased some ogx shampoo and conditioner and my hair appeared to look a lot better, my hair is now near waist length. I love silicones cause they protect hair from heat damage and UV damage. My theory is if you use an spf for your skin and face then silicones are a somewhat protection against UV for your hair. I use silicone free hair masks and other hair products but some of my products do contain silicones.if silicones were so bad companies wouldn't use them

Oh the big thing in curly circles is that silicone is really hard to remove, so you need to use super harsh cleansers to get it off, which curly hair generally doesn't like because it's naturally drier. (what with the oils having a harder time getting down the hair shaft vs straight hair) This has long since been debunked because even relatively mild cleansers remove silicones, but CGM purists and clean beauty freaks have just doubled down and will even tell you that silicones will NEVER come off your hair, and you essentially have to CUT them off your hair. So... yeah... big bag of nonsense.

@@thebeasidethere are other things this person mentioned that can be harmful for the skin, though, such as fragrances, and I have the exact same problem. I would like to reintroduce silicones into my hair routine, I know my hair likes them, but my scalp and skin do not like a lot of the other ingredients (fragrance is one of them) that often go along with them. And I always prioritize my skin because allergic reactions and irritation are much worse to me than slightly less shiny or simply slightly more ‘weighed down’ hair. I also tolerate certain fragranced products that only go on the lengths of my hair if they are from organic hair care brands, depending on what the fragrance is (it really does depend, because certain essential oils can also be irritating), but I have yet to find a hair mask for example that has silicones and does not have ingredients that are irritating for my skin. That being said, I don’t heat style my hair besides sometimes blow drying it from quite a distance, I don’t colour it, I don’t wear it in tight hairstyles etc. and my hair is naturally pin straight and pretty silky, so I probably don’t need silicones as much as some other people might, so I don’t hugely miss them. I find that a bit of Argan oil gets me very similar if not the same results. My hair is just a bit more weighed down perhaps, but as I say it is pin straight anyhow and unless I wanted to heat style it frequently it would be that way regardless of the products I use, so it doesn’t make a huge difference to me. I would honestly love to use them though, if they weren’t always paired with ingredients that my skin absolutely does not tolerate (even in masks, conditioners, and styling products that do not touch my scalp, the hair still touches my skin, such as the skin of my back, and my skin is so sensitive that it does react from that alone).

I have read that shampoos with cocamidopropyl betaine can remove silicones so it makes me lean more into potentially wanting to use them. Side note - I went to a hair dresser once who told me that the only way to get silicones out of the hair was to cut them out because they are like little ‘wax beads’ that jam their way into your cuticle and stay there forever and the more I think about that - wouldn’t some people want that ? to permanately smooth out the cuticle ? lol

I focused on improving my hair health before trying out styling products. I wanted genuinely healthy hair and persevered and got there. My virgin hair was low porosity apart from the ends and the very front where I have more UV damage so I didn't need much help sealing my cuticle. I prefer using protein products and olaplex 0 and 3 to fill in any chips/gaps in the cuticle or to coat the shaft with a protective barrier. Polyquats do that too. I will say that a lot of cheap conditioners rely more on silicones than other beneficial ingredients to give that silky feeling so switching to an affordable silicone free conditioner was so satisfying because there's space for other great ingredients in the formula and after a while my hair got that silky feeling and shine naturally without silicones. If you have a larger budget there are certainly great higher end formulas with silicones in them but it's slim pickings for great cheap formulas with silicones imo. Also I think a reason a lot of curlies avoid silicones is because curls and waves typically look the most defined when styled wet and then diffised on low heat to dry the hair fast and lock in the shape in a gel cast. An ingredient that repels water makes that more difficult, even if it is beneficial for reducing hair swelling.

I love my silicones!!! I have fine hair that tangles super easy so I need silicones to add some slip when I brush it!! I hate that people demonize them!

So glad I watched this!! After going silicone free my hair has not been the same (in a bad way).

I actually never heard of silicones in hair care. I thought they were just in makeup primers, I had no idea about them having anything to do with hair and hence I never looked at anything other the SLS in hair products

Thank you for the informative video! I’m a PhD student currently and SO ecstatic that you’re diving into real peer reviewed research to debunk these claims.
One thought, I’m very curious to hear your thoughts on these types of ingredients in skincare products. I feel like silicones are demonized there as well, and I don’t know if there’s any basis to that. If you need video ideas, maybe that’s another direction you can take these deep dives?

Thank you so very much for all the information you offer on your channel. I truly appreciate the level of research and effort you put into each video. I wish there was an easy way to search within the UA-cam comments from my phone... my apologies if you've already answered this question... do you have specific product recommendations for very thin, fine hair? Also, do you have any info on (significant) hair loss after Covid? Again, Thank you so much 💓

My hair is very tangly and frizzy without silicones. And much more breakage from brushing

I am sooo glad we've seemingly entered the era of parsing out the facts and determining how that information best applies to individual people instead of just categorically saying certain things are bad. I need silicones for detangling!!! Makes the biggest difference for sure.

I like silicones one my straight, fine hair. I like to spray a little Mane ‘n Tale detangling spray on the back of my head and then gently brush through.

So in short: we can use silicones as long as we use a good clearifying shampoo so now and then? So informative this video, thank you so much! I have thin wavy hair and followed the cg method for about 1 year. But my hair lost shine and still felt and showed dry with no volume. From now on I'll start using silicones again. You sure would have a perfect video about it... but can I ask you here what products you would recommend for thin wavy hair who desperate needs to start with silicones again? Thank you in advance!
