In the 1980s, a lot of Iranian refugees came to my town in Germany. They opened restaurants and cafes here. They put chai on the menu, something nobody had ever heard about. But soon everyone loved it. Now it has become a very popular drink here, especially on rainy days. A few years later, we got Indian restaurants as well, and pakoras are also very popular.

@@imelimadame9244 @Imeli Madame :D Yeah, that's actually a fair reason to challenge someone to a duel.
As a kid, I despised runny egg yolks, so my mother always made scrambled eggs. I just always assumed that's how it's done. (Bonus feature: you end up with only smashable components which allows a very mixable, porridge-like consistency. Excactly what you want as a kid :)). As a more sophisticated grown up, I now also prefer my eggs sunny side up and veryyyy runny (and am able to keep the spinache, eggs and potatoes seperated for a bit longer than before). So the scrambled eggs are no longer a hill I am willing to die on. ;)
I originally grew up around Hannover.

You should do engagement dishes and traditions! this is very weird but in my hometown, when a girl gets engaged, her family gives out 3 fishes from the season's popular fish to let the neighborhood know that she got engaged. It is also bad to grill the fish as old people used to believe that grilling it would " grill the girl's luck ". So the other popular choice was to fry the fish! Super weird, super random. lol.

The whole area was merchants heaven on earth! As it is located on the Arabian (Persian) gulf, we have been very influenced by India and other neighboring countries. We make Chai but we call it karak, we call normal red tea Shai. We also do henna for weddings and wear Indian inspired dresses in the "henna night" . I could go on and on really 😂❤️

It’s synonymous with cold sunday afternoons, hanging out with my grandma and aunts and my mom and sister. The spiciest German dish I'm aware of is Currywurst, which is inspired by British-Indian cuisine. Most spicy dishes around the world often have some kind of connection with the Indian subcontinent or South America where the majority of popular spices originated.

@@RR-kp5ps There is Pfeffersteak which is basically steak with a pepper-sauce. And maybe Soljanka a soup that originated in East Germany that can be spicy. There was this Lebanese place right next to my university and you couldn't move an inch there when it was lunch time, because everyone was having lunch there. Everyday they would cook a giant pot of lentil soup. Whatever you would buy there, it would come with a bowl of lentil soup which you could refill as many times as you wanted. It's usually eaten with rice or some other starch.
Dishes around a sauce based on butter and flour (effectively forming a roux but the process is a bit different) are pretty common in Germany as well as Switzerland and Austria. France has a bit of a different methodology, but you find very similar concepts.
My grandma used to cook a whole chicken for a broth, then breaking down the meat to put into the dish.
So she'd use an entire bird for a soup and main course.
Today it's obviously too much trouble to do it that way, and the meat does get pretty tough. But many cook books offer variations of Hühnerfrikassee. As mentioned in the video, just about any white meat may be used and anywhere from all the vegetables to none may be in the sauce. With a very good stock you may end up with a rather pricy dish that's more or less meat in a sauce and still have a very deep and rounded flavor.

In Trinidad and Tobago ours is definately Stewed Chicken soup with a dhal base. You put a little bit of oil in a pot and add some sugar, when it turns to a sort of dark caramel color but not burnt, you add in your seasoned chicken and peeled and cut up veges like carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and what we call eddoes along with some chopped onion and garlic. Mix till all is coated and let it fry up for a few minutes then add water to cover and add the cooked dhal which is basically boiling split peas in water and pureeing with a hand blender. Cook until everything is fully cooked and add more water if you have to. Closer to the end add macaroni and dumplings which are flour and salt kneeded with water until a stiff dough forms. You can add finely grated carrots if you wish. Add your salt and pepper to taste and add a little bit of Golden Ray or butter (if you can find golden ray that takes it over the top) and add a little touch of dark soy sauce. I hope you see this and make it! You'll love it! Trini Cooking with Natasha, Taste of Trini and Foodie Nation should have similar recipes but not sure if they used dhal as the base though. Love you Beryl!

super cool to see a dish from Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷 I feel like there are many variations of this across Latin America & as Beryl said, it’s amazing to see how much people across the world have in common. I’m also Puerto Rican and my family has also made this with other white/sharp cheeses - you can use Gouda, Oaxacan cheese, queso blanco, and so on. Depending on what’s available/people’s preference, we may also swap coffee for hot cocoa and regular cookies (especially Maria, iykyk!) for saltines. And again, it changes person to person, some people prefer to dip the cheese/cookie/crackers and others prefer to mix everything in and scoop it out.
also, perfect video for today as it is, in fact, cold & rainy. 😂

Interesting variation of the Huehnerfrikassee! As a german I make it this way: chickenbreast chunks, capers, mushrooms, white asparagus, white wine, worcestershire sauce, pepper and salt, lemon juice and that is the the way to make it and serve it with rice. I have never seen anyone cook your variation of it. Frikassee is always a stew and not a sauce or gravy over meat.

I only found your channel today but I already just LOVE and appreciate your videos. I have always loved learning from other cultures, and food is a universal language in the way music is. No matter where you're from and who you are, eating foods from other cultures allows everyone around the world to connect. It's a beautiful thing, but I just haven't found a channel that could satiate my hunger for diverse and meaningful food- until today! I love how willing and open minded you are and I've learned a lot just from two videos! I'll be binging your channel for the next hour or so but I just wanted to say you're awesome and I'll definitely be keeping up with your videos!!!

I'm a mainland Puerto Rican and I remember when I was younger my older sister putting cheese in her hot chocolate (and later her coffee) I thought she was just crazy!

For me it was the chai's color. There's nothing that beats a freshly brewed cup of strong adrak wali chai along with some snacks (for me a couple of cigarettes) on a rainy evening, sitting by the door with your cats on your lap. :)

Wow, this video was a nice surprise! I used to live in Bogota when I was younger and in school for a snack, they would give us the hot chocolate and cheese with a slice of brioche bread. It was one of my favourite things to have and watching it now gives me a nice sense of nostalgia :). Thanks Beryl, your videos always help me feel like I'm home!

For the lentil soup, I add fried onion on top and I use pita/ pita chips to add some crunch as well
