Hello there. You've got a new subscriber here. Watched a few of your videos and just wanted to say that I think you're doing a great job! Your video/sound quality is fantastic and I really enjoy your playing too.
It's kind of amazing what quality you can get for so little money nowadays. For what it's worth, I actually thought the Firefly sounded better than all the others. I realize that is totally subjective but it had a really nice presence that I didn't quite hear on the others. It was like they were a bit muffled in comparison.

Now I want to get some antiquitys for my fire fly. I like them because the attack sounds so much cleaner.

That sounds really good, I think it is closer sounding to the SG. I am looking forward to what work and/or money you put into it to make it playable.

I listen to the comparisons without knowing which guitar was used (blind test). For my taste, the results were (1)490/498 (2)Firefly (3)SG. That surprised me so I listened back a few times and I did not change my mind. With that said, I will gladly trade my Firefly for your SG any time you want. Seriously.

Lol..definitely the SG is a bigger departure in tone from the FF than the Duncans in the other semi-hollow. But I think it's likely a sum-of-parts thing, rather than the PUPs alone. That SG neck is a solid hunk of mahogany, and chunky. The body is thin and solid. A very different resonance and feel. It'd be interesting to throw the 490s in the FF...but I'm not disturbing that SG's mojo lol. I'm seeing used sets for $150. Then I'd be in $400 to the FF, which still would be a great deal imo.

@@MusicNerdStuff Totally agree. The Firefly is sort of a diamond in the rough. Not loving the headstock but it's better than Epiphone's.

Gibson, Firefly, Duncans. In that order.

i think the firefly had a nice open sound to it. would be nice to hear some slow clean single wolf tone notes to hear how the overtones sound. thx for the video. i dont think a person can lose out with buying one. if it fills your "character tone" needs at home, and is good enough to justify upgrading the pickups and tuners, then its a win win. its all left to the hands, creativity, and wise choices on quality effects and amps. thanks for showcasing the guitar, have a good day man.

Good vid...to the point. To me the FF pups sound best. SD are smooth, but weak (unless they are not raised up enough). The 490/498 pups are my usual fav, but, again, the FF sound best here. PS: If one were to place the SDs in the FF, and the FF in the custom build, it is likely that more people would like the FFs! :-)

I know i'm supposed to like the boutique Duncans the best and then the stock Gibson pups, but I liked the firefly tone a lot more. I'm not sure it is a classic 335 humbucker tone, but I liked it better. It seemed fuller, more open and from the perspective of just watching a vid seemed to have more sustain and resonance. It wasn't nearly as clean as the Duncans, but I liked that extra bit of shimmer.

I recently bought a Firefly as well, but mine is the 3pu Les Paul style.
I was cruising around UA-cam looking for new Firefly reviews and your 335/338 comparison popped up which, in turn, led me here.
I have to say: In MY opinion, the Seymour-Duncans fared the worst in this comparison, with the Firefly and the Gibson pick-ups fairly even...
I hope I haven't jinxed myself! I bought the Firefly with the intent of upgrading the electronics (and hardware if needed) and I ordered a set of Seymour-Duncan P-Rails to install in it. Time will tell!

The firefly's sound is better and more even , the Gibson's are muddy and lack mids

When you made the modifications What pick up brand and tuners you used for the firefly?

In all examples, I liked the Antiquities the best. I liked the Gibson second although it was a much different and hotter sound. The FF's were fine. Just not as detailed or clear.
