You can tell alot about a person by the way they treat animals. Makes me happy to see people treat dogs like family. Only animal in the world that will love you more than they love themselves.
Good to see a malinois being used as a homestead dog and not for military/police work. These breeds were herding dogs before becoming militarized. I have heard people say they don't make good pets when that's not the case. As long as they have plenty f exercise, attention and space to run they are good dogs for many homes. Training is good because they are smart and letting their brain work helps keep them happy
And i must thank you for your kind words because i am not an expert in training or wanting a maligator as they are wrongfully called also you can see in this video not all malinois want to run and chase all day all you need is to coordinate ur time with your dog so you can get an awsome loyal dog that is not psycho not to playfull because highsocialisation can get you to where your dog would be stolen and they are naturally no fear for kids if you bring them when they are puppies so they can grow with them i am really happy to see this video trully i've been wanting one for a long time most of the other video scared me
Rufus is a lovely dog. We have an 11-year-old Groenendael who has been a joy to our family ever since she joined us at less than 9 weeks of age. I like your training methods because they act on building trust between dog and handler, not the idea of forcing obedience through fear and intimidation. And boy, are Belgians thinkers! I'm glad you're involving your daughter in Rufus' training-I learned to train at about her age and know that learning the mechanics when she's still so open emotionally means she'll always be able to bond and work well with her subsequent dogs because she's learned the "language" so young. I look forward to watching her relationship develop with Rufus as they both grow older. It was also fun to watch Rufus with your chickens and compare his behavior with our Dani around our cats. Since she came when she was so young and roughly their size, they've always been in charge and always will rule. :) Thank you for sharing your furry (and feathered) family with us.
+TWANGnBANG This makes me so miss my rottweiler/bullmastif cross that I had, he just got too old and had to be put down, he lived to be 13 and a half and I had him from the time he was first weened, he was such a great dog, that was nearly 6 years ago now and I still can't bring myself to get another dog, just don't want to put myself through that kind of loss again, and I just don't think any other dog could live up to what he was if you know what I mean.
Awesome to see him growing up so fast. My girlfriend and I have a male German Shepherd/Pit mix (Cheveyo) and a female purebred Pit (Launch) which both have been throw obedience training. We tried to put both of them through protection training, but Launch just didn't really have the drive that's needed. We were able to get her to bark, show teeth and even on occasions to bite, but we never got her to hold. Cheveyo on the other hand had plenty of drive when it came to protection training. We were able to get him to bark, show teeth, bite, hold and even to chase. My father also trained him to hunt alongside his dogs. He does a lot of hog dog hunting and Cheveyo really enjoys that as well. The trainer that we took both dogs to specializes in Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds. He also breeds and used to compete in Schutzhund, but now with his health the has retired.
Rufus is one beautiful pup you area one lucky man.I have owned this breed for over 28 years long before people new they existed.I love them they are great he loves his home.
We got a German Shepard pup about 7 months ago. lol Boy they grow fast. We are both semi-disabled so we are training her to help out when needed. Our last dog was trainable & willing to please but not very bright. I had smarter dogs when I was younger but I had kind of forgotten how nice it is to have a smart dog. In just 7 months we have most of the basics down & now we are working on the names for things, bring it, leave it, push it, pull it. It's funny because if she gets confused she just goes through the training exercises trying everything. lol Anyways, getting a new pup & training is fun, frustrating, rewarding & at times, disappointing all in one. Kinda like having kids. :) My friend had a Malinois years ago & I would love to have one but we don't have the space. They are very smart, high energy, high drive dogs & that's more than we could handle here. Theoretically, our GSD should mellow out somewhat & adapt better to a standard house on a city sized lot. lol In theory anyways, a GSD should fit our slower paced life better. Now, we just need to get her to leave unattended milk alone and quit getting ice cubes out of the door dispenser. Nobody taught her but she loves ice cubes & she has figured out how to push the lever. lol Anyways, it's great to see your pup. He is gorgeous with great muscle definition. You are making me jealous. I wish we had some land & the ability to meet the needs of a smart, high energy dog. Looks like you two have a great relationship & he will just keep getting better & better as he learns & matures more.
I really enjoyed your update on Rufus! I brought my first Malinois female home last Saturday. Her mother is from show lines and her father is training in Schutzhund. I would like to do both with her. She likes to ride on the John Deere lawn tractor and she loves the treadmill as well! At 9 weeks she backed down a huge UPS driver. I think he was scared. She warmed up to him and he gave her a big rub! All was well. Thanks again and I'll check back in from time to time! Sharon in Virginia
Thanks for the Update, I have been working on my wife, your videos are helping me convince her that she can handle having a high drive dog. She has some fears (bad experience when she was young) and seeing your dog be calm, cool and adorable is helping me win this one XD
He reminds me of my Dutch Shepard. He is a home dog too but also likes to be outside. He is fine if he is out or in. Acts the happy either way. He has an ingrain protective manner too. Acts sweet and friendly most of the time unless he smells something off on a person then he will get between them and me and not let them close. He clears the land of everything but cats too. Neighbors have thanked us for clearing out the raccoons and possums.
+FuYing Bro We lost 7 out of 12 chickens in the 7 months between the death of our last Malinois and the arrival of The General. Now, the biggest risk to them is our dog himself. :)
I always love seeing people so dedicated. Today I went to a shelter and there was a man bringing in his Malinois because he couldn't handle him. When he arrived at the shelter the dog bit a woman's hand. It makes me feel so sad for the dog, because they are so misunderstood and don't receive the excercise/attention they need. I have a Malinois-Dachsund cross breed. She has a lot of the characteristics of the Malinois. She is cute and small but a handful. But I wouldn't miss her for anything. This week I discovered her brother is at the shelter too, he's only one year old... It breaks my heart. People need to educate themselves before getting a dog, especially these ones.
My rescue Belgian Malinois mix is a very high-energy dog. He needs to run at least few miles a day in order to be content. He also has a very high prey drive. He is an amazing dog but not for everyone.
@@Monscent Seconding this! Scentwork drills, obedience training and food puzzles calm a dog much better than exercise. My GSD and I used to go on 8 mile jog and he’d be up again by lunch time. Now he goes on a shorter run and has a food puzzle and some scent work and is much more likely to sleep through the afternoon.
Great video! It's great to see his development and progression- as well as your training! I'm so happy to see the "out" command- so many K9's (even law enforcement) don't let go on command! I also have a large working dog breed that needs consistent exercise/training. From a professional opinion, I would highly recommend performing a gastropexy to prevent bloat. It's totally work the cost to provide ease of mind!
i can see you wanna train general mildly compared to others in your local area and i support you with the though that only mild ways to train protecting dogs should be trained than just plain out ruthless as you say so keep up the nice work with training with him and he looks very cute
Would strongly recommend learning nosework and volunteering with a shelter as well as joining your SAR team as a non-handler first. This is the route they advised me, and I’m learning a crap ton before I get a SAR dog. That said, if you’ve done this please ignore!
any time you show him. i detect his improvements in everything. and i liked the training you did when letting him improve upon tracking and returning to home. even if the house isn't the objective. "home" being a way to get back to a location your familiar with..

Fantastic progress on the training. My 6m/o czech gsd isnt near that point, were just getting out, down, sit, and stay (off leash) Nothing gets him quite as excited as a sleeve.
You're thoughts on training are spot on I think, you have a friend who protects rather than a protection dog that you can pet. The latter is needed in some cases, but I see that in mostly professional areas or certain high risk individual cases, but I think you choose right for your circumstances. Handsome Regal pup you got there. I have a 6 week old Silver tip GSD dad and Belgian Malinois mom pup. She is definitely smart at this age. Has a 10 YO gentleman giant GSD to learn from too. 🤙🏼
He's a good looking buy. Training is important as you know and a good trainer is more so. We had top fire our trainer due to a few problems. We are working through it but time will tell.
i just found out that my 6 month old puppy is half malinois! i originally thought her mom was a german shepherd mix because she had shepherd features but was smaller and her face was structured a little differently than what i was accustomed to seeing. now that i discovered the malinois i see where all those features are from! looking at pictures my little female has super strong malinois features. even the descriptions ive read of her temperament are pretty spot on. the father of the litter is a husky mix. im excited to learn more about this breed to see similarities and differences.
syvkni I had the same thing happen to us. we got what we thought was a half German Shepherd mix from the shelter only to find out he is half Belgium Malinois.We think the other half could be partly husky but not sure. would you mind sending a picture of yours. I have a Labrador-beagle cross breed that is 2 years old now and he is a similar size to General and also I have a labrador-paterdale terrier cross. Both are so cute!
My dog cant fetch as much anymore because of arthritis although she doesn't realize it. If we do it to much she limps later. However she loves it and we are waiting till summer when the lake thaw out.
OMG, I just rescued a 10-month-old Mal mix who could be the twin of Rufus. Luckily he was being fostered at an obedience training facility so he was pretty well socialized. My 10 yo female became instant best friends with him and I expect it won't be long until he becomes the alpha but Rocket is holding on to the upper hand for now. I am teaching him not to eat my cats like with your chickens but my cats know how to deal with malinois so as long as they stand their ground they are safe. He ran at the tv while I was watching your video when you were throwing the ball, pretty funny.
Really like the way you plan your videos. We can see you put a great deal of time and effort into each video produced. The General will be Quite the Dog. Totally jealous man. My Belgian is almost 2 and she's still thin, feed her twice a day "Nitro" food from pet store. Hint I find the tennis racket and ball will save your arm and back. Awesome Job!!!
Beautiful dog! and thank you VERY much for the disclaimer! "Belgian Malinois are not good pet dogs. They are very smart and have very high energy levels. If you cannot give them lots of exercise and mental stimulation through training, don't get one." We have a mali mix and she has enough energy for all of us, don't think I could handle a pure breed maligator.
He just means they aren't like Shih Tzus in that they need stimulation to be happy. He's not saying they aren't good pets, they just aren't good low-energy pets. You have to give them mental and physical stimulation, similar to German Shepherds.
I agree about the robot dog. I never saw the appeal of a dog that was a robot. Mainly because I can't imagine a dog would perceive that training as affection and partly because robots only do as programmed. Dogs, especially dogs like the Malinois, are very protective and fearless to begin with. My male German Pinscher first took a defensive posture for my sake when he was four months old. A homeless guy was yelling and circling our car at a convenience store when Benny casually walked over, sat on my lap and put his front paws on the arm rest ready to leap out of necessary. No training necessary...
My dream is to get a malinois in the future. I would be very active and hopefully agility train it. I'm willing to spend hours and hours every day training and exercising to have one :)
TWANGnBANG Thanks :) I can't have one for a long time, but I probably won't get one as a first dog, and if I did I would adopt a senior :) I know they take an experienced handler so I would need a mellower dog to work with at first. I don't to get ahead of myself like a lot of people do.
EPIC! Just got to love a dog that eats at Mach 3. Happy B-Day General. Okay he's just one cool dog. I totally get why you don't want to part with him for training. I think he's amazing right now. Called Mans Best Friend and vice versa for good reason. Don't sell yourself short you're training him well.

i had a prize an alsation sheperd "Rommel" 15 years ago. we saved his seed at a show dog breeding service. i made sure to save his branch of the line. great dogs are a thing of beauty and love.

A very pretty boy. My little GSD girl is now 15 months -- I got her from Wayne Curry/Kraftwerk K9, in Washington state (she had a 3 thousand mile plane ride at 8 weeks, and got out of the crate like it was just another day -- her temperament is the most solid I've seen in any dog; and I've had top quality working dogs since 1991). There's nothing like a great working dog. BTW, the best training videos I've found are the Michael Ellis videos, from Leerburg. Of course, Ivan made some great videos quite a long time ago (much of the best training these days is based on stuff Ivan was doing 20 years ago).
I agree with your misgivings about training -- there are lots of "dog people" who are not really much fun to work with. IMO, if you just do a little bit of sleeve work, to the point where the dog will gleefully take a hard, full bite, and hold on -- then, with a good dog, that's all that's necessary. A dog that has never "bit" anything before may have good protective instincts, but still not know "how to bite" if it really needed to. It only takes a short amount of experience putting full bites on sleeves for a good dog to understand how it's done (although at least some of them have to be on a stranger -- not on Dad, lol). After that, rock solid recalls, downs, and perhaps heeling, and you have a family dog that can do what's needed, when it's needed (if it is born with the right characteristics for a protection dog). I've been extraordinarily lucky with my girl on that regard -- she's very friendly, but is also VERY ready to give somebody the "suspect treatment" if they're "acting funny." She's the perfect combination of aggression and friendliness -- not always easy to find. You can never go wrong with solid European working lines, as you know.

We were on Ivan's wait list for 6 months and were told we'd probably get a puppy from the "H" litter, but Ivan changed his mind about giving a pup to someone and asked if we were ready to take one. We are so glad we did.
I love his howl. So he is a homebody. So funny how he squeezes into a small spot. Bless you for not using the ecollar. He can handle the command with the chickens and herding. he is so smart.How much does he weigh? I have an aussie shephard/collie cross but I am using all her strength for service work so there is a lot of reeling in to do and switching her attention to something else, she is catching on but she is at the testing age. Is the flipping of the digestive tract common for this dog breed? Why don't you train him yourself, you clearly have a very good handle in a positive way ? Blessings!
I got so excited when you mentioned not using an e collar. I hear constantly about the befits of e collars with my Shepherd and I can o my think to myself- why would I want to teach a dog that pain is an indicator to stop if I want a protection dog? And why would I want to encourage a trick or agility or nose work dog with pain? Pain and fear are great- for breaking a dog’s drive. If you’re struggling with the chicken chasing, have you tried a BAT protocol? You’ve mentioned doing a board and train for further protection training (and you are so right, building solid fundamentals like a fast “out” and motivation to bite) are so much more valuable than teaching biting as a trick- that’s how you get failed dogs. If you can’t bear to part with him for board and train (no judgement, but I think the handler should always be the trainer) can I recommend Denise Fenzi’s Shutzhund course? She knows her shit and has her dogs listening if she’s barely whispering.

I have a Malinois too, you are raising him the right way! Mals are so easy to train without compulsion. Patience is everything with Mals.

You're thoughts on training are spot on I think, you have a friend who protects rather than a protection dog that you can pet. The latter is needed in some cases, but I see that in mostly professional areas or certain high risk individual cases, but I think you choose right for your circumstances.

Handsome Regal pup you got there. I have a 6 week old Silver tip GSD dad and Belgian Malinois mom pup. She is definitely smart at this age. Has a 10 YO gentleman giant GSD to learn from too. 🤙🏼
He's a good looking buy. Training is important as you know and a good trainer is more so. We had top fire our trainer due to a few problems. We are working through it but time will tell.

i just found out that my 6 month old puppy is half malinois! i originally thought her mom was a german shepherd mix because she had shepherd features but was smaller and her face was structured a little differently than what i was accustomed to seeing. now that i discovered the malinois i see where all those features are from! looking at pictures my little female has super strong malinois features. even the descriptions ive read of her temperament are pretty spot on. the father of the litter is a husky mix. im excited to learn more about this breed to see similarities and differences.

syvkni I had the same thing happen to us. we got what we thought was a half German Shepherd mix from the shelter only to find out he is half Belgium Malinois.We think the other half could be partly husky but not sure. would you mind sending a picture of yours. I have a Labrador-beagle cross breed that is 2 years old now and he is a similar size to General and also I have a labrador-paterdale terrier cross. Both are so cute!
My dog cant fetch as much anymore because of arthritis although she doesn't realize it. If we do it to much she limps later. However she loves it and we are waiting till summer when the lake thaw out.

OMG, I just rescued a 10-month-old Mal mix who could be the twin of Rufus. Luckily he was being fostered at an obedience training facility so he was pretty well socialized. My 10 yo female became instant best friends with him and I expect it won't be long until he becomes the alpha but Rocket is holding on to the upper hand for now. I am teaching him not to eat my cats like with your chickens but my cats know how to deal with malinois so as long as they stand their ground they are safe. He ran at the tv while I was watching your video when you were throwing the ball, pretty funny.

Really like the way you plan your videos. We can see you put a great deal of time and effort into each video produced. The General will be Quite the Dog. Totally jealous man. My Belgian is almost 2 and she's still thin, feed her twice a day "Nitro" food from pet store. Hint I find the tennis racket and ball will save your arm and back. Awesome Job!!!

We have a mali mix and she has enough energy for all of us, don't think I could handle a pure breed maligator.

He just means they aren't like Shih Tzus in that they need stimulation to be happy. He's not saying they aren't good pets, they just aren't good low-energy pets. You have to give them mental and physical stimulation, similar to German Shepherds.

I agree about the robot dog. I never saw the appeal of a dog that was a robot. Mainly because I can't imagine a dog would perceive that training as affection and partly because robots only do as programmed. Dogs, especially dogs like the Malinois, are very protective and fearless to begin with. My male German Pinscher first took a defensive posture for my sake when he was four months old. A homeless guy was yelling and circling our car at a convenience store when Benny casually walked over, sat on my lap and put his front paws on the arm rest ready to leap out of necessary. No training necessary...

My dream is to get a malinois in the future. I would be very active and hopefully agility train it. I'm willing to spend hours and hours every day training and exercising to have one :)

TWANGnBANG Thanks :) I can't have one for a long time, but I probably won't get one as a first dog, and if I did I would adopt a senior :) I know they take an experienced handler so I would need a mellower dog to work with at first. I don't to get ahead of myself like a lot of people do.
EPIC! Just got to love a dog that eats at Mach 3. Happy B-Day General. Okay he's just one cool dog. I totally get why you don't want to part with him for training. I think he's amazing right now. Called Mans Best Friend and vice versa for good reason. Don't sell yourself short you're training him well.

i had a prize an alsation sheperd "Rommel" 15 years ago. we saved his seed at a show dog breeding service. i made sure to save his branch of the line. great dogs are a thing of beauty and love.

A very pretty boy. My little GSD girl is now 15 months -- I got her from Wayne Curry/Kraftwerk K9, in Washington state (she had a 3 thousand mile plane ride at 8 weeks, and got out of the crate like it was just another day -- her temperament is the most solid I've seen in any dog; and I've had top quality working dogs since 1991). There's nothing like a great working dog.
BTW, the best training videos I've found are the Michael Ellis videos, from Leerburg. Of course, Ivan made some great videos quite a long time ago (much of the best training these days is based on stuff Ivan was doing 20 years ago).

I agree with your misgivings about training -- there are lots of "dog people" who are not really much fun to work with. IMO, if you just do a little bit of sleeve work, to the point where the dog will gleefully take a hard, full bite, and hold on -- then, with a good dog, that's all that's necessary. A dog that has never "bit" anything before may have good protective instincts, but still not know "how to bite" if it really needed to. It only takes a short amount of experience putting full bites on sleeves for a good dog to understand how it's done (although at least some of them have to be on a stranger -- not on Dad, lol). After that, rock solid recalls, downs, and perhaps heeling, and you have a family dog that can do what's needed, when it's needed (if it is born with the right characteristics for a protection dog). I've been extraordinarily lucky with my girl on that regard -- she's very friendly, but is also VERY ready to give somebody the "suspect treatment" if they're "acting funny." She's the perfect combination of aggression and friendliness -- not always easy to find. You can never go wrong with solid European working lines, as you know.

+big visk (bigvisk) I would've driven to pick up The General, but we had less than a week's notice we were getting him. We were on Ivan's wait list for 6 months and were told we'd probably get a puppy from the "H" litter, but Ivan changed his mind about giving a pup to someone and asked if we were ready to take one. We are so glad we did.

I love his howl. So he is a homebody. So funny how he squeezes into a small spot. Bless you for not using the ecollar. He can handle the command with the chickens and herding. he is so smart.How much does he weigh? I have an aussie shephard/collie cross but I am using all her strength for service work so there is a lot of reeling in to do and switching her attention to something else, she is catching on but she is at the testing age. Is the flipping of the digestive tract common for this dog breed? Why don't you train him yourself, you clearly have a very good handle in a positive way ? Blessings!

I got so excited when you mentioned not using an e collar. I hear constantly about the befits of e collars with my Shepherd and I can o my think to myself- why would I want to teach a dog that pain is an indicator to stop if I want a protection dog? And why would I want to encourage a trick or agility or nose work dog with pain? Pain and fear are great- for breaking a dog’s drive.
If you’re struggling with the chicken chasing, have you tried a BAT protocol?
You’ve mentioned doing a board and train for further protection training (and you are so right, building solid fundamentals like a fast “out” and motivation to bite) are so much more valuable than teaching biting as a trick- that’s how you get failed dogs. If you can’t bear to part with him for board and train (no judgement, but I think the handler should always be the trainer) can I recommend Denise Fenzi’s Shutzhund course? She knows her shit and has her dogs listening if she’s barely whispering.
