  • Crosscutting wood on the table saw requires the use of a Mitre Gauge and in this episode, I am comparing 2 very good miter gauge upgrades to see how they differ in usage and features.
We'll be comparing the Incra 1000SE Vs. Osborne EB-3 and hopefully you'll be able to decide which mitre gauge works best for you.

Putting the gauge in the far end of the slot & pulling it towards you to seat it is a revelation. I feel silly for not thinking of such a simple trick.

I am a HUGE Incra fan and use their fence systems on my router table. So, when I needed a miter gauge for the table saw, they were the first company I looked at. Its a fantastic product but I bought the Osborne. Its speed in use for 98% of what I do won me over. I have owned it for many years now and have never felt it lacking in features or abilities. And it gets used a LOT. Radial arm saw is gathering dust.

On the Osbourne or any device if you constantly use a measurement that is not well defined.
Set up and check the device to get it exactly where you want it.
Take a fine hacksaw blade and put a mark cut in that bar and then fill it with a high visibility nail polish. Bright orange works pretty good.
That way you can put it back right where it was every time without going through all the extra set up steps.

I upgraded to the v27 several years ago and never looked back. The t slot in my old saw was worn and sloppy, and the wear was uneven to make things worse, but the Inca nylock system worked like a champ! I actually just bought a 3000se from govdeals auction for 63 bucks! Can’t wait to get it and put it to good use! ( I was able to inspect it before bidding, it’s in perfect condition!!) All this to say, I would be totally against the way the Osborne adjusts to fit. The reason is that now you are metal to metal and after dealing with a saw that had a worn out miter slot I don’t want another. The incra nylock rings are meant intentionally to be sacrificial putting much less wear and tear on the saws mitre slot, I’d rather replace them than have to replace my saw…..again. Great video, keep em coming!

Hi Colin. How did you get the the spring loaded type screw to stay in? I just picked up a Magnum Tri-precision Mitre Guide but the spring loaded screw type for adjusting the angles, fell out of it's hole. Can't see how to get it to stay back in....lol...

Great video, Colin. Just as a side note, I believe that both can be set up to work in the right hand miter slot fairly easily as well.

    Great videos Colin.
I've had my Incra 1000SE for around 15 years, (I bought is at Rockler Torrance CA and took it home to the UK with me, along with a ton of other great stuff you guys are lucky enough to get).
I've readjusted the nylon expanders in the bar once in that time due to a little wear creeping in and realigned for true on a number of occasions after dropping the tool on my carpeted shop floor.
As for accuracy, like the Incra hype goes, "any angle any time", a fantastic product I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

The key clip (I call it a tooth) on my Sawstop's miter gauge gets on my nerves. But when I pull the gauge back behind the table's edge, the clip keeps the gauge from falling back and down onto my foot. As usual, we get a choice of problem.

I purchased the Osborne miter about 30 years ago after seeing Norm Abram on New Yankee Workshop use his. I love it, very fast to set up and make different angle cuts, and their is no learning curve to deal with. I also have the Incra and love it but as my eyes are getting older I use the Osborne all the time now. Both are great but I feel that the Osborne is easier to use.

Hello Colin! Well, I guess I'm still a little old fashioned here; I still have my 1973 Craftsman table saw and I still love it. To get the play out of the miter gauge, I gently center punched the left and right sides of the gauge's metal bar alternating sides about 1/2" apart along the whole bar. Then I'd try it in the miter slot and either stone the bar or dimple it a little more in places. I only had to do that once and it still has no play. I lubricate the miter slot with candle wax. I drilled a hole through the bottom of a candle, ran a loop of string through it, and i hang it on the front of the saw with an "S" hook that I made out of hanger wire. Almost 50 years later, still works GREAT! I also put a good piece of straight 1" maple on the gauge too. You're absolutely right about those tri-squares. I used to work in a machine shop and a good Starrett square is the only way to go. I was lucky enough to get my three piece set in 1973 from someone that was retiring. Still have it. Yes, the cost is painful but it is worth every penny! It is interesting to see how tools evolved! Thank You Sir!

I'll be curious about what you think of the Osborne when you try to set the stop block to a particular dimension with the built-in scale. Amazon reviewers did not like this aspect of that miter gauge. They didn't like it a lot. Oh well.

Incra makes a ratchet lever knob (BKN0BS2) which eliminates the need for the hex screwdriver. Simply replace the hex screw with the bolt and knob, and rotate the lever when you want to loosen the screw. I have them on my 1000SE, and they work well. I can move the lever, and pull out the extension. They enhance the usability of the miter gauge.

    2) I have been using an Incra miter V27 (less than $75 some of us have a tight budget) with an wooden auxiliary fence that gets changed often or an aluminum fence with an extension bar and stop block.
    3) I will put this in the same category of Ford vs Chevy

Thank you! I own the Incra 1000 but I am considering getting the Osborne. I like the 45 degree cut in the fence. One thing I noticed the last time I was in my Rockler store was that the pivots on their demo Osborne EB-3 seemed a little sloppy and looked like it could cause the gauge to pivot about a half degree. If I am going to rely on the little holes on the underside of the triangular brace to hole my angles, then I want the pivots to be rock solid. Can these pivots be tightened, or maybe the ones in my Rockler store were excessively worn? Do you have any thoughts on this concern? As an aside, I noticed you had a home brew fold-down outfeed table. Do you have a video or other info on how you made this? Thank you again!

    • @tonkatoytruck
      @tonkatoytruck 2 роки тому

Actually, the triangle design of the Osborne provides far more stability than a protractor design. Must have just been the demo model you handled.

I have an Incra 1000HD and really like it. I do however like the fact that you can move the fence and the extension on the Osborne without a tool. The 1000HD has detents at every degree plus the half degree scale so it is VERY precise.
