    I didn't even think that this was even possible, untill I accidentally stumbled upon this video. I keep finding nice tapered forks on ebay. I want to convert to through axel, but didn't think it was possible, because almost all the through axel forks are tapered. This "adapter" headset would help me out immensely. This is the kind of valuable information I don't get at any local bike shops. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.

    Got a tapered shock that couldn't fit into the original frame. Went to ask the mechanic. The mechanic said you have to order the straight type only. I was so stressed out that I posted it for sale and it couldn't sell. Until I saw your video Thank you very much for making this video. Respect 👍👏

    7:35 shorter exist, this cup does not fit this frame, it should be flush, all the way in, It should not be used like this. you need to get the correct cup with shorter internal part. Going I9 hydras, rode bmx, and played extreme sports for 25 years now. MTB is by far the most fun, and its alot less stress on me compared to bmx dirt jumping. #IDJM #eks #leatt #spy+ #fistgloves

    2:25 technically it's not an adapter. correct term is external lower headset cup.

      @@WOLFTICKVIDEOS I was expecting a *lot* of trouble, actually.
      One trick I have learned was to use *two* Cane Creek cup drivers when pressing in the second instance of cup so you do not have to worry about messing up the one you just installed.
      I used a piece of rubber as a cushion, which ate the rubber sheet, so the next time I’ll either get another Cane Creek driver (bought from their website; they recommend using them, and I can see why!) or use either a piece of Delrin plastic or Thicker (8+ Oz) Latigo leather.

    I knew about the faper (lol) adapter but not this one VERY COOL !!!! Ok UA-cam comment story time....Recently I was at my local bike co op to replace my headset. I had Jessica/sealed bearing/red in hand. With the help of volunteer Amanda, she lubed up Jessica to guide her onto my head tube but Jessica was going on crooked. Thankfully, the guy in the opposite bike stand that was watching us, told Amanda to quit cranking down on Jessica, otherwise she could damage my head tube. Finally, with Jessica straight and re-lubed, with the other guy still watching us, Amanda grabbed my steer tube and carefully slid it into Jessica....true story

    Well you better fix the the gap in the lower head tube, I would take it back a part and grind ( Saw) the lower headset cup down, you want no gap. if you don't fix it your going to bend the lower cup

    • @matttiggerward6147
      @matttiggerward6147 2 роки тому +3

      Agree totally with the is the gap is not good, the headset cup could bend as suggested or the internal lip inside the head tube could let go… most likely outcome is the first few big impacts will ram the cup into the head tube past the little lip, and because the diameter is less you could crack the head tube = dead bike 😭
      Pop it back out and measure the inside insertion depth and cut the cup down please!

    I did the same with my Specialized, tapered fork onto a straight steerer, I used a risk headset as they make an adapted one to do this (or at least they used to). It adds a little extra height to the front of the bike, plus I put 120mm forks rather than 100mm, but I've not really noticed any difference in handling. You should of asked, I could've told you all about it 😂😂😂
    Im not sure I like the gap between the cup and the steerer tube, I think I would get a machine shop to buzz the top off it so it fits in tightly

    This arrangement never seemed like an ''adapter'' to me. It's relatively common on newer road/track bikes top have a 44mm headtube with a 1.5 inch tapered fork. The lower assembly ends up being external cup like here becasue the crown ''race'' diamter is 40mm, which doesn't leave enough room for a bearing within the 44mm headtuve ID. It's actually my favourite headset/fork setup, to have a 44mm headtube with 1.5 inch tapered steerer. I'd like to have this on a custom road bike at some point. You can also put a straight 1 1/8'' fork in there with a reducer adapter.

    Are you just going to leave that gap between the headtube and lower cup? That's how headtubes get cracked. If the cup is too long and won't let it seat then use a dremel to trim it down an 1/8 of an inch or so

    You said you don't get suplimentary comments, so i made it a new one. A longer fork or making a mullet doesn't change the architecture of the frame. BB drop is a hardware thing. A longer fork effects stability but it's constantly moving. Making a bike a mullet reaks havoc with a bikes geometry (unless it was designed that way) but doesn't change BB drop from a frame standpoint. Think of it as leverage over the bike when your standing on the pedals. No matter what fork or wheels are on it it's a fixed point of leverage acting over the frame. So is it a deal breaker loosing 4mm of bottom bracket drop? One side of the room you have stability, the other side you have sensitivity to rider input. You may like the higher BB drop better! Just my opinion!

    So... I got a 26 inch K2 Nomad 3.0 that I was HOPING to put a used 29er tapered fork on... I was able to get the bearing race cups out of the frame....and that doggone taper is STILL so wide where I don't think it will work. 😢 So I have a fork and some tires for sale and I'll probably be looking for a used Judy or something....

Mine also has a little bit of a gap in between the cup and and headtube although not as big as the gap on yours, it almost makes me wonder if we could file it down a bit to make it fit tighter because with my ocd it does annoy me a bit, but mine was a regular straight steerer headset, sorry Jason and Jessica.

    11:16 don't measure at the head tube as the head tube can be tapered externally, so it will give slacker angle than it actually is, it's best to measure at the station or the fork legs at a straight area.

    • @josuemedina58
      @josuemedina58 2 роки тому +3

      I believe that’s not accurate because forks have offsets and if you measure off the fork it will be a slightly different head angle. They measured correctly

    • @bradley3549
      @bradley3549 Рік тому

      @@josuemedina58 The reality is that some frames (most these days) have tapered headtubes externally and you'll get an incorrect angle. And some forks are not parallel to the steer tube, so you may also get an inaccurate angle. But most forks, even when offset, are still parallel to the steer tube. You can prove this by measuring the headtube angle, then rotate the bars 180 degrees and measure again. If the measurement is the same, then your forks are parallel with the steer tube. (Also a good way to check for a bent fork!)
