This is the point a drummer becomes a musician. That is how a master plays to a song. He is an incredible music producer too and responsible for the sound on so many records. Simon knows how to make drums sing yet not be overpowering. I will never get bored of hearing him play.
Yes. Kinda smoothly trippy feel to it. Whenever Simon is mentioned, this track comes to my mind, it’s one that has ”Simon Phillips” written all over it. Love it.
Simon is a real master musician, there's a reason behind all his playing decisions. There's that atomic clock element to his playing, the perfection is breathtaking.
Simon is incredible! His Tom tone is second to none, and his free hand style is superb. He was the very best selection in Toto after Jeff passed, and remained to be since.
Simon reminds me a lot of Gavin Harrison in terms of his inner-dynamics and those beautiful, subtle grace notes that lend so much soul and emotion to the music. How many songs have we heard over the years that lost emotion due to robotic, monotonal drumming or guitar playing? It's all those well-placed undertones, ghost notes and nuances that make listeners feel and become part of the music. This was a perfect example of how to emote. Simon is such a musical genius.
I agree, definitely some similarities. Gavin and Simon have actually known each other since they were kids. Gavin's father was a trumpet player in Simon's fathers band.
Gavin's dynamics control is probably even more impressive, and that's saying a lot! But Simon is a maybe a bit more musical, better at hiding his technical prowess under the music. Both are amazing, amazing drummers I could listen to for hours.
One of the best drum sounds ever recorded. Still holds up today. The whole recording is one of the best. Myself and many other tour audio engineers use this track to test the PA system tuning. Great musicians and fantastic engineers. Simmons's drums always sound great. Heard him live at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood with protocol a few years back and was seated next to the stage right behind his kit and it sounded amazing. He's the real deal and one of the best in the world.
it holds up today obviously. Today's music is so repetitive and lack those subtle notes that makes 90s and prior era music so rich to listen to. I do not know much in music - but just from a listening perspective it is quite obvious that we have gone backwards in many ways
My favorite drummer playing my favorite Toto Song! I always use this to test out headphones and audio gear and I just end up sitting there playing this on loop for hours. Definitely the king of dynamics. I actually teared up when he left Toto! 😅
Mee too, Simon leaving the band was a real bummer. It was a real treat that he recorded the 'Bridges' album with the Guys, since he recorded only a few records with them. I hope we can see him once more with Toto someday.
I was taken aback when he departed Toto, as I had gotten very accustomed to him in that chair. Took about 2 years to tune my ear to it, but he made it work. I was legit sad at his leaving, but joyful to see Protocol back at it, also.
Indeed an Iconic Track. One of my go to reference tracks to listen to when I'm mixing / recording. Amazing recording, sound and mix. Especially when you place it in the time it was recorded. Proof that we don't need all the tools we have nowadays to make an amazing recording. Its all in the craftsmanship of everyone involved in making this Iconic track.
Simon, I am very very impressed by your talent. Especially this song bring back so much Memories. I am 60 now and hear Toto since I was 16 and I will hear it until the end of my life ...
I cannot overstate how unique of a drummer Simon Phillips is. With his incredible dynamics he can make every simple grooves sound complex, with his tasteful playing he can make any complex polyrhythm sound simple.
The man's a genius. Groove, finesse and power for days. Always plays for the song. No wonder he's been one of the most demanded session drummers over the last however many decades.
This song is just something that reaches deep into your soul and touches you where you are the most vulnerable. For me it's the perfect example of music conveying emotion more than any other medium.
I love learning about how songs were created, how they came about, how grooves come to life. The way Simon talks about turning off the snares on all the snare drums and going into the way the kick drum should sound. So subtle yet makes all the difference. I feel closer to the song and love it that much more.
"I was born in the land of the sun, and the tall green grass." The drums fit right into the lyric and vibe of the song. One of my favorite songs of all time,
We get to hear nothing like this in today's music. Those were the days....a Golden Era for creative music. Toto what a band with top class drummers and musicians.
Can we PLEASE have a breakdown of "Drag Him to the roof"? Plus, there's so much material from Tambu, Mindfields, Through the Looking Glass & Falling in Between (+ 'Candyman' and 'Bridges') that I would love to hear Simon's Insights on...
And with that, I now elevate Simon Phillips to the top of my list of favorite all-time drummers, the man’s dedication to precision and artistry of the drums is unparalleled. And if anyone hasn’t heard the album from 1995’ Tambu, I highly recommend it , it is in my opinion the best Toto album ever ! Luke’s playing is of course always amazing, but his songwriting and singing ability on this one is stellar.
I know why Simon is my ALL-Time favourite drummer for decades! This smartness, dedication, every single stroke a well planned work-of-art! I think you need to be him to even being able to "invent" such a drum-pattern! GENIUS!
"In that studio I had a small kit. 5 toms. That to me is... SMALL" 😂 Simon and his sense of humour. The precision in his playing, the touch, the feel, nobody gets even close to him! Beautiful!
I work in the industry as a stage hand. This is one of those songs you always hear blasting through an arena as soon as the speakers are ready to test. Impeccably recorded, and its always awesome to hear these drums coming through giant sub woofers and stacks of speakers.
Thank you so much. It shows how brilliant the songs are made. Very special. Every musican of TOTO is a master of its own. And when they play togehter is purely magic.
Hey guys! Have you done or planning to do a “hears song for the first time” with Simon? Would LOVE to hear his version of an unknown song to him, him being such a prolific session player.
His advocacy of open--handed tech was the greatest help to keep me playing after nearly quiti after such frustration with every instructor trying to switch me to right hand lead and the hassle of swapping every setup I subbed on. Learned to adapt to a right handed setup when needed and has helped to no end!
I am not a drummer but I am always amazed by Simon's drumming. Creating a groove that is so characteristic that makes the song must be every drummer's dream. To me as a listener it is on par with Rosanna and Africa groove. Pat Torpey created a groove like that on Take Cover.
I saw Simon, in 2016 near Venice with the "Hiromi trio project", he's an INCREDIBLE drummer, with an unique drumming.. as a drummer myself, i Always knew him, bit from that Moment he became One of my favourites!! I can't wait to see him again here in Italy! ❤
Simon I just want you to know that I appreciate you so much!!! You've been a huge influence on me and I'm a full time touring drummer based out of Nashville Tennessee. Every time I listen to you, it inspires me to get up and start woodshedding a lot more. Blessings!!!
This another one of those things where “that part” helps make the song and brings it up to another level. Simon’s intuition served the band and the song very well here. It’s so damn good
I will remember is one of my favourite songs by anyone, just a timeless piece of music. Every level it's just the highest tier of musicianship and performance, and Simon's drumming is just as integral as Luke's amazing vocal When he played it gave me chills
Whenever I test any pair of headphones, monitors, car hi-fi systems … „I will remember“ is ALWAYS my reference track. The dynamics, the sound, the balance of low and high end and the actual mix are simply magic. It comes in handy when you get a world class drummer who‘s also a world class engineer ;)
Thanks for this breakdown of a classic drum part. Simon has been a hero of mine since 1981, when I read his first cover story in Modern Drummer. He and Luke are two of the nicest guys in the world. In a funny way, as much as Si was thinking of Peter Gabriel (Jerry Marotta and Manu Katche) for this track, I always thought of it as kind of a nod to what Jeffrey played on Mushanga, as well. Oh, and Si's tom sound is still my favorite after all these years. Thanks again, guys.
Simon's overall drum sound for me is THE drum sound. I first heard him on the 25th anniversary Toto DVD and I was immediately hooked on the drum sound. It's so unique you can recognize it everywhere. I bought Tama Silverstars because they are the closest sounding to Starclassics and I bought a Roland e-kit and I'm still trying to dial it in to sound at least vaguely similar to Tama.
Thank you very much drumeo! Tambu (and KOD) has had a very positive impact on my life as a musician and as a person! These albums, in my opinion, belong in the musical and pedagogical Hall of Fame! Thanks to these fantastic musicians! And all the best to Jeff and Mike!
This is so evocative and calming; just a masterpiece of dynamics! Been a Simon fan since 801, he's incredibly inspiring to me. Deep End rocks!! Thank you Drumeo and Simon!
That's all I have. Two top, a 14 floor... my 16 floor Tom is reserved if something happens to my 22in kick! (I'll have a 16x16 undrilled kick at that point). Gretsch Catalina Maple. I own a single snare... I love that Simon can sit with just a snare and brushes, and make a person double-take like, "what was THAT!?!"
Saw Simon for the first time in Utrecht Holland. Gave a drum clinic and was totally impressed with his footwork. And beyond that a very nice person...still with his feet on the ground. With other words still a big fan. He had to share a room with a man/woman person called Devine wo was famous those days. I think simon still remember this 😅 thanks Simon stay healthy also important.
One of my favorite songs by Toto! Simon is a monster, no one can play like him... I also love his gentlemanly personality. Without him, Toto would have ended up with Jeff's passing.
"You're Simon Phillips and, clearly, I'm not." This LP met w/only moderate success but I owned it and this was one of my favorite tracks. Such mastery and precision. Thank you Simon for all of these years of great music.
Sweet! Such quality and feel and that steady groove that was present in Jeff's playing. Not comparing Simon to Jeff, but just that ability to hear a groove that colors the melody just perfectly. Beautiful!
for my money Simon is one of the all-time great drummers. I have been lucky enough to see him a few times now including way back in the day with Al Di Meola. For all of his chops he still knows how to groove and keep it in the pocket when needed. And he has one of the best sounding drum kits. His tuning is impeccable. I think I've seen his Protocol band 3 times. Beyond incredible. And I've also had the pleasure of getting to know his drum tech. I have met and chatted with Simon and he is without question one of the nicest cats you will ever meet. The man is a treasure !
In the 80s, as a kid drummer, I became a huge fan of Simon due to Pete Yorks "Super Drumming" Tv show. Cant believe its been like 40 yrs since. So great to see him, always. Legend.
I grew up with Jeff's backbeats as part of my own musical style and influence, but Simon has been there, as well. Jeff could shove a click around like nobody's business... and, those single-handed 16ths are still legendary in their elegance, but to know that both these cats sat for the same band is just phenomenal. Simon and I have birthdays the same week! He's been a fave since he was with the Who; my issue was retuning my ear to hearing his style behind Toto. Took a minute, but I loved his time with them!!
This Gong Drum is my favourite instrument!! The perfect opening for this song and pure joy if you can hear it through quality speakers. Thank you Mr. Simon Phillips
Simon is such a gifted and talented musician - drummer. Thank you for your many years of incredible music. Wishing you many more years of sharing your successes with us. Cheers Simon.
It's so great to see a master of an instrument smile occasionally while they're playing a song they created as Simon does here it shows you that even if the heights of perfection they still take great pleasure
I love this song and used to play it in the early 90s on a smaller drum set. Now 30 years later it is great to rediscover these details! (We didnt have youtube back then)
What a genuine person..still calls them tom toms wich is amazing As much as triggers sound good nowdays, the dynamics are so lost in the 90s and i miss them
One of those drummers I could watch for hours and hours and hours. Just incredible.
He’s unbelievable
Me too. And I’m a guitarist.
Came here to say the same.
Never obtrusive, yet always lends his personal stamp on any track he plays on 👍
This is the point a drummer becomes a musician. That is how a master plays to a song. He is an incredible music producer too and responsible for the sound on so many records. Simon knows how to make drums sing yet not be overpowering. I will never get bored of hearing him play.
Marco Minnemann took some lessons with Simon to improve his tuning and producing skills. Very wise
Notice how this recording sounds almost the same as the original one that was made 30 years (!) ago. He's unbelievably consistent.
Exactly my thoughts. Absolutely.
The groove is almost hypnotic. Awesome drumming, nothing less from the legend!
Yes. Kinda smoothly trippy feel to it. Whenever Simon is mentioned, this track comes to my mind, it’s one that has ”Simon Phillips” written all over it. Love it.
SP's solo album 'Symbiosis' carries similar grooves with a similar feel to it - it's all instrumental jazz-rock, but very worth a listen.
@@ericgelders His solo albums are very good
hypnotic yes
Imagine a sound engineer dying from inside of a desire to use NOISE GATE and be completely overridden by Simon Phillips' perfect dynamics!
Not likely - Elliot Scheiner was in the house for that record.
For shure, Elliot Scheiner is a huge professional and an a (ADULT) person to understand the wishes of the best drummers! @@dankenton
My pet hate on live gigs. Lazy sound engineers who gate the life out of everything!
Noise gate has nothing to do with dynamics, it only affects the decay. Compressors are used to process the dynamics...

Gavin Harrison and Simon Phillips, perfect duet 13 years ago
There's a four part video of Simon sand Gavin playing a drum duet. It blew my mind.
Everything he plays gives me the chills, it's so emotionally packed.
One of the best drum sounds ever recorded. Still holds up today. The whole recording is one of the best. Myself and many other tour audio engineers use this track to test the PA system tuning. Se simon torna nei toto faccio il giro del mondo in barca a vela

One of the best of all time and he always seems to come across as such a humble guy.
I listened to this song hundreds of times and never thought about the dynamic foot work, awesome to know !
The timing of the lyric coming in ”I will remember” was perfect. Nice job editing this!
Saw him play with TOTO a few times and also solo. I have never heard a better drum sound in a live concert. Just perfection.
Such a brilliant drummer, I seriously could watch his technique for hours. His attention to detail is phenomenal
Him and Jeff Porcaro were both masters of their craft.
Very gentle on drums and detail oriented. He sets every note with a purpose... And I love his ghost notes so much
The man's a genius. Groove, finesse and power for days. Always plays for the song. No wonder he's been one of the most demanded session drummers over the last however many decades.

I love the snare accents on the chorus, like he's keeping that verse vibe going but with different orchestration. Simon's one of the best
Can we PLEASE have a breakdown of "Drag Him to the roof"? Plus, there's so much material from Tambu, Mindfields, Through the Looking Glass & Falling in Between (+ 'Candyman' and 'Bridges') that I would love to hear Simon's Insights on...
Leonard Bernstein level dynamics and nuances. This master is absolute Legendary. 🙏🏻
Yes, love that he doesn't just blast everything at top power and volume.
easily one of the most musical drummers around, grooves for days with fantastic technical ability too
I could listen to Simon talk all day about drumming and stories behind songs! What a legend and musicians are so lucky to have worked with him
And with that, I now elevate Simon Phillips to the top of my list of favorite all-time drummers, the man’s dedication to precision and artistry of the drums is unparalleled.

I have a dream I wish wish to know Simon Phillips in the new earth and heavens with my children and animals
All the animals which ever were
Who ever were conceived and all the people too
I hope see one day Simons back with TOTO. He is the soul of the band with Jeff !
He's absolutely killing it with Protocol, though.... I think that's a riot to see those guys back out and wailing.
it's impossible to dislike this man. such a soothing and fantastic man. 🤩
Another example of why Simon is one of the greatest drummers ever.
Simon Phillips is just other worldly .. I could listen to just him, all day! Such a beautiful and thoughtful drumming genius, is this man! Xx
Mesmerising. Love his drumming. One of the best. One of my favourite songs for so many reasons, especially the drums.

He is the reason I play drums. My favorite drummer. He's so talented
Never noticed the quiet kicks on 2,3 and 4! I’ve always played it with just a kick on the downbeat. Masterful!

The iconic drummer... Love this gentleman Sir Simon Philip with his exceptionally drum skills 🥁🥁🥁
Simon is such a great drummer. He sits there so mildly playing in total concentration. And ya would never know that by his face
What a musician! And Toto is such a special band for me.
man the drum is singing! you could hear the dynamics, smoothness, the flow, the mood.
Dynamic King.
Forever Toto.
Love you Simon Philip.

oh god, his groove ❤
Brings tears to my eyes.
One of my all time favorite songs.
One of my favorite Toto tunes from one of my favorite drummers
The greatest drummer of all time gives us an immense emotion. Thank you Simon
This is so evocative and calming; just a masterpiece of dynamics! Been a Simon fan since 801, he's incredibly inspiring to me. Deep End rocks!! Thank you Drumeo and Simon!
This is pure art.
A true master right there!!!! Hard song to full play with any mistake!!!! The dynamics are amazing!!! 😮
"5 toms, for me small". I followed and admired Simon since 1976. Now I must see that each drummer should know to play with two toms only.
That's all I have. Two top, a 14 floor... my 16 floor Tom is reserved if something happens to my 22in kick! (I'll have a 16x16 undrilled kick at that point). Gretsch Catalina Maple. One of my favorite songs by Toto!
Simon is a monster, no one can play like him...
I also love his gentlemanly personality.
Without him, Toto would have ended up with Jeff's passing.
"You're Simon Phillips and, clearly, I'm not."

Simon is such a drumming treasure......
Sweet! Such quality and feel and that steady groove that was present in Jeff's playing. Not comparing Simon to Jeff, but just that ability to hear a groove that colors the melody just perfectly. Beautiful!
I think Jeff had a tad bit more shuffle in the groove. A bit more punchy and shuffleey. Not to say Phillips isn’t. It’s marginal.
for my money Simon is one of the all-time great drummers. I have been lucky enough to see him a few times now including way back in the day with Al Di Meola. Genuinely one of my favourite songs of theirs. Absolutely beautiful
Just perfection and overall musicality for Simon and the whole Toto band!!!!
