Y'know, most artists nowadays are always afraid of not being completely original and being similar to some other form of media, so admitting that you have taken some inspiration from various other works is honestly a great way to break the stigma of getting ideas from other forms of media. I applaud you for that Kevin, keep up the good work.
As the famous quote goes, "If you steal the idea of one person, you're a thief. If you steal the ideas of seven people, you're inspired. If you steal the ideas of dozens of people, you're unique."
This gives me a reminder that I don’t always have to be original all the time. This is a refresher to everyone that you can use whatever you want to help create something good.
I read a book called Eye of the Moon (by Anonymous, part of the Bourbon Kid series) and I absolutely loved it because now and then I'd read a scene and think "hehe, yeah, I've seen that movie." There's Desperado among others to bulk up the original madness like Elvis Presley with a shotgun guitar fighting vampires. I've got to reread that book come to think of it :P But yes, taking inspiration, good stuff ^_^
Is literally impossible to be always original, never forget that. What makes the work unique is the artist. So copy, take inspiration, make a project that is completely copying and paste. Your personality is what will it make one of a kind
Yeah, until I became more interested in writing and stuff I didn’t realize how many little details can happen just because the author wanted them to- for example, I made a character named Chaos (don’t judge I acknowledge it’s……unabashedly edgy and cheesy) and literally named a character Bloodshed because of the line “Chaos and Bloodshed are not a solution” from Hamilton smh Not inspiration as much I guess I just thought it was funny
With how transformative you are with these references, the only one I thought was inspired was The Lego Movie one, otherwise I would have had no idea. I'd love to see more videos like this.
What most people don't know is that some of the most brilliant cinematography and animation in the world is made by an artist who wants to invoke and homage countless things that they were inspired by, which in turn allowed them to make iconic art that inspired someone else.
Well not "not ever" as there's probably plenty of cases of poorly executed inspiration where the new thing will be destined to live in the others shadow or be compared to it. A healthy dose of it is definitely good though, nearly everything in history has been built upon things that came prior, so as long as you use your inspiration in a useful and constructive way where you can add your own value to the concept it is very much important and healthy.
The one and only problem with the last 30 years in not understanding how to really take a inspiration and make it your own with respect for the source material in most cases
I'm working on an original project and was scared that I was mishmashing too many elements and ideas from other projects. This is very reassuring (not to mention fascinating!). Thank you, Kevin!
People who say this makes you less creative have never made a single piece of art in their entire life. Creativity is being able to combine different things, making something out of a vacuum is impossible because our brains just don't work like that.
EATS THIS CONTENT UP FOR BREAKFAST!!! I absolutely love it when artists share their inspirations for their own art. It's absolutely amazing to see where they took that inspiration!
I love the diversity of inspiration for these shots! Never thought I'd see the musical episode of Dexter's lab be used as reference lol. When you make each shot are you deliberately watching the inspiration scenes to reference them or do you block out scenes and then look up something similar to your vision? Sorry if the wording is weird, I'm not sure how to phrase this question well.
Sometimes the scene would pop into my head and I would look it up to clarify. Some of these I didn't really think of directly at the time but realized there could have been some subconscious inspiration.
Or you get inspired by the pattern formed when multiple different sources mirror each other; like the muppets sequence also showing up in classical theater/opera and the Brady Bunch opening.
Whenever I see a zoom out of the world I always think of the Super Mario commercial, and the fact that it brought so many people together for a common goal, beautiful.
I will always have more respect for those who admit their limitations, admit their inspirations and so on. Those who admit command respect because they have nothing to hide. You have done great work!
It's cool to see your inspiration ^^ There's been plenty of times when I'm making something and I also think, "oh, it'd be cool if this looked kinda like how it did in so and so."
Seeing such varied sources of inspiration being integrated into one seamless whole is awe-inspiring. After having so many influences to draw from, you’ve come up with such a wonderful end result! Please never stop what you’re doing!
This reminds me of the video Dan Povenmire shared about the production of the Family Guy Shipoopi scene and how much time he spent searching for different references to pose the characters in.
Sometimes you don’t even know what inspired you till you look back after creating something. Because our brains retain ideas in the back of our minds and then we remember them later. Everything that has ever been created came from inspiration from something else.
I like to take it as the inspiration and mimicry of others by the characters is them attempting to live their lives as someone else, and get someone else to live their lives for them
It takes a hell of a lot of creativity to jump from Super Mario image on Earth to "Y'know what let's really move the camera out to remind the audience just how small we are while pairing it with the words 'Why do I exist'."
I barely hear about your animations (I don't actually speak English) but still these videos are really great, they impress me. And even if I don't understand the lyrics of the song I like them a lot, you are very talented.
I don’t even see these are inspiration lol, like they’re so different from the original scene! I mean, I see the things they have in common, but the only one that’s _actually_ pretty close to the insipration in the mario slide one, but at the same time, it’s not something you’d really think about lol

I counted and the amount of references gets to 13, this is pretty unique if I say so myself

Another Muppets movie
It’d be a miracle if there was a musical
The irony is that a lot of those scenes were inspired by other things, so it's all just a beautiful Matryoska doll of inspiration.
I always have this in the back of my head, and often wonder what the starting point was for some of these things. Some of them must go back millennia.
I like how they get more and more entertaining, from movies to super Mario 64
and then mario commercial
What’s that supposed to mean?

i didnt even know there was a commercial for super mario XD

what's originality but combining existing things
Wow I never thought my comment would blow up.
Just by mashing up a ton of stuff you can create something original
If I had a nickel for every time Mario influenced this animation I'd have two nickels. It ain't much but it's weird that it happened twice
Especially for the fact that the latter of the inspirations is a commercial
Delighted to find this reference... I found my way here after discovering Kevin's channel through his 3D Doofenshmirts video.

Hearing the words "Why do I exist?" as a giant head of Mario forms on the planet's surface is something I didn't think I'd see today.
Really shows that inspiration is the best thing you can take for creativity

I actually got reminded about the slide from SM64 in the original video. Insane to see that it was actually inspired by that same exact thing.
I'm impressed how varied the inspirations are. Everything from theater to movies to cartoons to games and even commercials.
This has inspired me to not be afraid to get inspired by other media
