In hard mode he actually does the beams on the first round which caught me off guard since I'd never seen it. You can also stun lock him if you alternate between mashing and chaos spear, throw in chaos control for a quick phase 1.
You can also speed up his "monstrous form" (apparently that's its official name) phase - if you use Chaos Control while he's swimming after you in goop, and dash into him while using Morph, it skips to his semi-final QTE series, the one with his clones.
It’s a shame that most of these QuickTime events perform themselves, but I do like how Mephiles’ Fight plays out a little differently if you don’t perform some of the QuickTime events
Probably just to give a larger sense of interactivity in the fights since most of the time, people will succeed in the QTE. It's only really out of curiosity that people go out of their way to fail them. Would be nice to be actually able to fail them though.
the way these boss QTE's work reminds me of that one QTE in God of War: Ragnarok with the troll that you have to cut the head off but if you don't do anything the game just waits for you to press the button without consequence if you don't
I remember deliberately failing all the qte segments in the Spider-Man 3 game at least once in order to see the various failures where Spidey just gets the shit beaten out of him.
Aparently, you can also Doom Blast the arm of the Death Egg Sentry at the end of Sunset Heights, I havn't done it myself, but I saw the prompt. I thought it was worth mentioning. Anyways, thumbs up worthy video.
i’d rather it just wait tbh. what’s the point of qte if there’s no punishment for failing? the whole point is to be quick, and if im gonna get the same result with or without pressing it then i dont see a point at all. at that point i’d rather it just be a button prompt the game waits for me to press, makes it less depressing
That reminds me, if you fail Triple Boost in the final boss of Forces, the boss fight continues awkwardly with no music, so you have to use Triple Boost again to beat the boss.
@BigBoyBren2006 It waiting just feels like an insult on my intelligence. Sort of like being talked to like you're a preschooler despite being a college student At least with it auto-completing it's like "Aight, Imma wrap up this shit since you're being a slow ass" I'll still agree that it's dumb either way, but it auto completing is the lesser of two evils imo
@@TheKorenji Again, I agree It's just if we are gonna have either evil, I'd much rather have this (and you still get that cutscene flow if you put the controller down anyway) than the game treating you like an idiot like GoW Ragnarok
kinda lame how the last qtes for each boss can't be failed. would've be cool if they had made scenes of the bosses killing Shadow, or atleast counterattacking and getting some health back. I feel like the instant cut to the "I want to exist" scene could've been done a lot better by Sega
If you do the entire course of Metal Overlord's level, he does a new attack. Didn't see it until I had my little brother play the game and he took too long.
It wouldn’t surprise me that they were planning to add more of those little cutscene changes like the first level has, but it ending up being cut. The bit of the Mephiles fight was probably easier to program in with the extra voice lines, than making a whole extra cutscene
6:57 Shadow's mouth got animated on the wrong side of his face. XD Which I think happened because the camera was viewing Shadow's left side before you did the QTE, so the game forgot to switch his mouth over to the right.
8:00 I actually knew almost nothing would happen here because I played the original and would try to see how many times I could get them to say the “Burn, burn to ashes” line.
For some reason, when fighting metal overlord they never showed the qte when the boat was coming down on me so I just took damage and never knew what to do
Maybe it was cause you didn’t hold the button to lock onto everything at the time? I don’t think you can auto lock on to anything needing the Doom Spears.
That mephelis fight needs to be studied and expanded upon, because it is legitimately one of the best fights in the entire series. the part where mephelis counters what youre doing. but you can counter that too is insanely cool. and just imagine that on a scale of the abilities you have in frontiers. at that point it would be a REAL fight

It’s a bit dated since that random sun just never does anything other then giving an awkward fight some vaguely hype climax. He lacks a single attack in HD i actually like actually. Compared to that the Shadow finishers are miles better even when they are just an illusion. To bad it’s actually quite easy to miss Doom’s QTE in sunset heights and miss the symbol if you’re mentally focused on dodging the next obstacle.
Hey just wanted to say that the filter your using sounds pretty rough on the ears Really love how you have little lines but getting a different filter or sound clip thing every time it plays would be an improvement! Great video
Also tried the reaching the Loop on Devil Doom / Neo Devil Doom. There's so many skipped routes, I just hoped there's a harder version of this Bosses that fully utilizes the entire track, and also gave all Bosses the Hardest Mode with no Chaos Control or Randomized Patterns. The game's all about memorizing the patterns which is the traditional for Speed Running but I really hoped it had some randomness in a different difficulty.
@themenacingsloth Ya know what? I think I prefer that. I would rather not sit there and feel useless for the game to play. At least Unleashed makes sure your playing the game and not sit there lazily. Because having a QTE that does nothing is shit straight up at least Forces does have some things you gotta watch out for as well, and doing none of the other QTEs can give you something interesting or funny. But the ending parts of bosses in Shadow Generations don't do that at all. That is highly disappointing.
For those wondering why boss fights have optional qtes my best guess is that unlike a level that can just put shadow in an earlier part, most if not all the qtes for finishing bosses after a unique set piece occurs (metal overlord throwing the ship, mephilis creatures) after the boss has sustained a lot of damaged and is only one hit away I imagine they just wanted to have an artificial sense of control sense failing and then getting tp’d to a random spot would break the flow of the cinematic finish to boss fights and to those who say that takes away the challenge, you’re right but also consider this is a franchise primarily targeted towards kids
That is a really lame excuse Anytime there are literally any Quick Time Events You can either waste more time, take more damage or die Do that What you gave was a stupid choice of words to give Kids games or not because clearly they aren't exactly aiming for kids stuff now Plus then it makes people question why the quick time event is there It's a stupid decision If your adding a quick time event make something happen for both cases

At least having some sort of time incentive for doing them correctly would be nice. It's interesting to note how most of Frontiers' QTEs are in fact mandatory and result in Sonic's death if not done successfully.
A little opinion of mine: if you’re gonna make the QTE impossible to fail, don’t make it a QTE. Either that or make it possible to fail, far too many games nowadays have QTEs that only have the outcome where you succeed and it’s annoying.
I think one of my biggest gripes with this game is it doesn't incentivize you to learn its mechanics beyond a superficial level. In Unleashed, you really can't expect an S Rank without being somewhat familiar with the shortcuts, drift and can't fail the QTEs. Since Generations, (or maybe Colors) the devs seem so terrified of making a player feel bad about a ranking that if you get through a level or boss without dying, you get an S Rank. Like, these things are supposed to encourage to learn the game to greater extent, but its ironic Mephiles says "expecting me to fall for the same trick twice?!", when we're allowed to brainlessly Doom Blast him thrice? Even Devil Doom, I didn't know I could Doom Blast him, because I kill him before I even get in range for that to happen. Kinda wish we'd go back to Unleashed difficulty and Sonic Team stop treating the player like they are 3.
Shame they chose not to fix the Time Eater in generations. I would of been more than okay if they decided to just use the 3DS version of the fight with HD models.
Imagine when you fail with mephiles shadow would get stabbed and if they don't want to actually show it they could just make their Silhouettes black with a white background while mepiles would say something about his return is inevitable
Finish Cutscene QTEs are pointless. I don't get why they are there. Would've make sense if you fail the cutscene QTEs and it still proceeds but it costs you time so you have to time it right but you're supposed to just appreciate the flow of the boss's defeat scene at that point.

i seriously can't be the only one who didn't know that homing attacking metal overlord's falling scrap metal in the 2d section prompted an alternate faster win right? i always thought you had to reflect as much as you could using doom manta
For that Mephiles fight, I actually got that hidden dialogue by accident. I wanted to try and get rid of those button input signs so I messed with the options and turned them off (even though some still appear during certain QTEs). So when I faced Mephiles again I completely forgot about using Chaos Control to end the fight and managed to get that line. I wish more bosses had these kind of lines. 3:48 this also happens if you homing attack a few clones first THEN Chaos Control, saves time in speedruns by skipping the kick cutscene. Seriously goofy looking lmao
It's disappointing that the final hit I'm boss fights are useless where shadow does it anyway, but it still gives the player some joy and makes them feel more involved in the final attack

HOLD ON THERES BIOLIZARD ON SONIC X SHADOW GENRSTIONS
you can actually damage mephilis without having him summon minions by smashing him into the floor instead of the balls on the pillars
3:48 this also happens if you homing attack a few clones first THEN Chaos Control, saves time in speedruns by skipping the kick cutscene. Seriously goofy looking lmao
1:14 okay then
It's disappointing that the final hit I'm boss fights are useless where shadow does it anyway, but it still gives the player some joy and makes them feel more involved in the final attack
Unless you miss it like your brain breaks and you immediately realize that it's pointless and makes you disappointed
I guess they just couldnt afford to alter the cutscenes for if you failed the QTE
It's cool that there are some changes, but still why bother put it If it doesn't matter ( pun intended) whether you press the button or not, why not make it a cutscene then?
