Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2024
- Today, we are demystifying Dilla Time with what we've dubbed London's SICKEST rhythm section - bass virtuoso Rob Mullarkey and one of the most unique drummers in hip-hop and drum ’n’ bass, Richard Spaven.
Mullarkey has mastered the worlds of groove and odd-time signatures on the bass guitar, but how do those skills translate when playing with a drummer? Watch Rob and Rich completely stretch and reassemble your sense of time.
You’ll also get exclusive insights into Rob’s approach to beat displacement, the octave pedal he uses for his gig with Jacob Collier, and more! Plus, he’ll show you how to use your own setup to create catchy melodies in your basslines.
And did we mention that we've got some exclusive performances? Yep, let's dive in!

ROB MULLARKEY
“Purveyor of finest low notes”, Robin Mullarkey is best known as bassist to a generation of progressive and diverse English artists including Jacob Collier, Jordan Rakei, Zero 7, Eska, Roisin Murphy, Natalie Williams, Richard Spaven, Laura Mvula, John Newman and more recently Leon Vynehall, Anton Eger, Steve Wilson and even Quincy Jones.
Robin is also known for his involvement with the UK broken beat movement, producing two ground-breaking LPs fusing his academic jazz background with the contemporary dance aesthetic in the band Brotherly. The music appealed to “muso’s” and soul loving crate diggers alike and has won him international accolades for his challenging yet approachable arrangements, incorporating woozy tempo shifts and cheeky harmonic devices.

RICHARD SPAVEN
As a drummer, composer or artist, Richard Spaven is one of the world’s most exciting and genre-defying. His career has seen him play for many of music’s most innovative artists both on stage and in the studio: Jose James, Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, Gregory Porter to name but a few.

Hey All! We just wanted to share that due to a mixing mishap the backing track on 'Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine' sounds a little out sync compared the way it was really played. We apologise and the sound was rectified for the Podcast edition, which you can listen to here: ua-cam.com/video/fMwPwp21Odk/v-deo.html
Hey Scott and Ian! Due to work issues, I am only just starting work on the Fretboard Accelerator and I'm excited about starting the Slap Accelerator as well. I was wondering if you guys could do a video tribute to Ray Shulman, who recently passed on March 30. Ray was not only an amazing bassist but a ridiculous multi-instrumentalist and songwriter as well! Love me some Gentle Giant!
I thought it had extra lilt! Great version, thanks for the video.
Perfectly wonky 🙏
Rob Mullarkey is unbelievable in Jacob Collier's NPR ! This guy is a MASTER !
that lakland p with tapes has literally one of the best bass tones i've ever heard
Honestly one of the best videos you've ever done, in my opinion. Cheers lads!
Haven't seen many comments on Spaven, he is truly a one of a kind drummer in so many aspects
Yes! His set with Loyle Carner at Glastonbury just put him on the mainstream map. Phenomenal.
Absolutely true.
More of this type of content, please ;)
Richard Spaven was a tip from your Yussef Dayes vid. glad to be here as a consequence, cheers
Spaven is just about my favorite drummer. Dude is insane - musical as absolute hell.
These two are a Sly and Robbie type combo stamping their mark wirh discernment and power. The constant evolution of rhythmic/melodic fusion is a thing of beauty. Awesome guys!
Finally Rob on SBL!
This series of videos just continues to WOW! Understanding the production that goes into this format, plus the time, effort and money, but this stuff is priceless. Thank you to everyone involved - love every moment of it.
I am definitely a fan of your longer videos, and all of the insight these guys bring to the table in this episode is mindblowing! Awesome stuff!
What an amazing video. Thank you! These guys are absolutely wonderful. Such a mix of creativity and craftsmanship. Wow!
Ian deserves a drink for getting Spaven to actually hit the untreated snare. He worked for it!
This was a wonderful episode. Tons of ideas and information delivered with enthusiasm and interest. Loved it.
This video is so AWESOME also in terms of info and edu!
Thank you Scott and Ian!!!
And ofcourse Richard and Rob!🤩
Maybe the coolest studio ever. Such excellent production on this all around.
Very insightful video and entertaining. Love the interview formate!
When I saw the Meters back in the early 90’s George Porter played nearly everything with one finger on both hands. Blew me away.
😵😵😵
One of the most interesting, inspiring bass videos I've seen. Thank you!
This is one of the best videos on the platform
They guys are such wonderful musicians. Been aware of their work for a while now; really glad you thought to have them on the show. Thanks, I learned a lot!
Both absolutely killer! 🔥
This content is brilliant and exactly the thing that can differentiate SBL from what anyone else offers. Bravo!

i just want to say that this space you are in looks sooo warm and welcoming and comfortable! sitting down and chillin low couches playing mellow music really reminds me of me and my friends back in the day.
Incredible.... really love the grooves and playing going on here! This music just shows you the interesting direction jazz/improvised/funk has gone in.....
Spaven and Dave are my two favorite drummers, not for everyone, but man, they are slayers of this genre..
Than you, lovely lessons and inspiration!
Incredible! Truly incredible! I want more!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great video, Richard Spaven is amazing, saw him at the London Drum Show and bought his cd straight after his set!
this is INSANE !!!!!! thank you so much for sharing !!!!!!
We need more lessons and discussions about playing out of the grid, those stretched, laid back grooves drive me crazy! Please guys ❤
Best episode yet guys, keep it up w real players 💥
Mullarkey's the man!! Saw him playing at a Jacob Collier concert, him and Jacob are killing bassists!! 🔥
Loved this video!
Amazing … loved that Ty got a shout there ❤
I love this duo!! Spaven is such an amazing drummer, and I've been listening to Rob since 'Brotherly', both geniuses!
For sure, a killer team right there!
Absolutely fascinating.
Thank you so much for talking about the j dilla think in regards to bass. I would love more material centralized around that theme
Oh wow! Eye opening, ear opening, heart and soul opening. Ta
Yay!!!!!!! Glad you did this so many don't know.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
A lot to learn here, nice one 😊
Great episode guys!!
This was fantastic. I know Mullarkey from his work w/Jacob. Great to hear him in another context.
BEST FREAKING IDEA to invite these two guys there in this setup asking them those questions........... SBL doin' da lord's work!
AWESOME video! Rich and Rob are UK royalty!
This one's amazing. Learning a lot from this. 😊
So awesome to hear dude! 🙌🏻
Fantastic video!
Thanks for this video! As a bass player I would love more of this type of videos! Could also be bass an one other instrument like rhythm guitar , keyboards, horns. Just to showcase the difference of thinking you might be challenged with in a recording session or gig, good work Scott and Ian.
This is my favorite episode ever!
Been waiting for something of this vibe on SBL's channel, so thank you from the Central Coast of California. Love the part at 37:20 from they're work with Ty. 46:29 reminds me of Haitus Kaiyote vibes. Thanks again for this incredible content!! In the same vein, I got my tix for Yussef Dayes with Rocco Paladino in Ventura, CA in July and can't wait.
Glad you enjoyed the content dude! Love both Hiatus Kaiyote & Yussef Dayes - that'll be a KILLER show! 🙌🏻
Props to this channel. Amazing video. And also congrats to the sound tech, those drums sound amazing. I want to see some video about the way this drum was recorded. Was Spaven in charge?
THIS IS WILD, Amazing content here
It’s so relaxing .
Wooow i really love this longer videos
🧡🧡🧡
An entire series/channel dedicated to talking with rhythm sections would be fcukin phenomenal
the Amen Break, not to be confused with the similar sounding Eamon Break, which was used extensively in the House subgenre: Holmes
Just transitioned from guitar into bass. This is the inspiration I need to keep going!
Best thing you can do is : see the bass as an extension of the guitar, and guitar as an extension of the bass.
Understand the space and dynamic of both and regardless which one you prefer, you are going to become an even better musician.
PLEASE! PLEASE! DO MORE OF THIS! MORE MORE MORE!
We want MORE too! 🙌🏻
tl;dr Gents, this is one of the coolest videos you've made.
I began playing bass in the late '90's to Dave Matthews band, moved from there into 70's funk, 50's/60's jazz, then some of the neo-soul (Baduizm, etc).
When when Voodoo came out, I lost my mind trying to understand what was happening. This was such a fantastic conversation, especially with the straight vs. Dilla examples. Bravo!
Awesome dude! Thanks for checking out the video!
Great video
Good stuff!
Amazing video! Very inspiring, did anyone manage to pick a chord progression on Rhodes at track #2?
Masters 😮
One of the most underrated Bass players of our time.
Can highly recommend anything he plays but to be more specific, checkout his cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”. Another Sublime piece is Jacob Collier - With the Love in my Heart (Live in Toronto). On this track note Rob’s dynamic explosion at 7:20. Gives me spine chills every-time (how dare you touch me so musically appropriately Mr Mullarkey!).
While obviously adept at all aspects of Bass Mastery, Rob’s feel and dynamics are elite. Those dimensions of musicality are what seperate him from any number of other incredible bassists. Small wonder Jacob Collier has him in his touring band.
Not to be too selfish but can we please have more Mr Mullarkey?
this is beyond anything imaginable, yet it is REAL
next level stuff
Who knew Jon Richardson rocks the d'n'b!
Phenomenal players! Microtiming is such an important part of music!
Blown away....
Color me impressed!
J Dilla the GOAT!!
That more drum&bassy stuff Richard plays is amazing! Wonder if there are drummers that are more passionate about drumfunk and choppage style dnb, trying to play more complicated drum patterns like the programmed drums in tunes by dgoHn, Paradox/Alaska, Macc, Fracture&Neptune or early Fanu?
Excellent!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Do they release music together as a duo? and where can I find ti?
La grande classe
A very nice spirit!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Love the color of your bass in the intro, what’s it called? Also awesome video
oh, this gonna be good.
sound sounds soundful
💯💯💯
Godamn that D'angelo song was dope. That remix need to be available on streaming ASAP, one of my favorite Dilla beats ever.
Killer! 🔥
This is great! I think I've seen Richard play...not sure (maybe at a Southport Weekender with Kaidi Tatham)...or not 😉
Could you possibly cover something with Dominic Forest lapointe
Slap Accelerator is a HUUUGE amount of stuff. Do it! Do it do it do it.
More and more (and maybe a bit more) of this.
Yes dude! Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome
Spaven is a legend
The band “Om” is the the rhythm section of the band “sleep “. Highly recommend both but i listen to om the most . Literally puts you in trance.
Awesome - We'll check them out!
@@devinebass your in
For a treat. Their performance at the “amoeba “ record store is legendary and its right here on youtube. They did add another member in the recent years but those first albums were just al cisneros and chris hakius and they are special to me
Anyone catch what model that compressor is that he said has the side chain option?
I live near London. Where can I watch them performing this live?
Spaven kills it with Jose James
Ian asks such astoundingly interesting questions. He’s a national fucking treasure.
