Written in the immediate aftermath of Mathilde Schoenberg’s and the painter and family friend / housemate Richard Gerstl’s extramarital affair and Gerstl’s subsequent suicide in 1908, Schoenberg’s Op. 11 Piano Pieces seem to try to reach out in search of utmost expression in each note and gesture, amplifying the meaning of each while weakening the harmonic and melodic context imposed by their nature. By working against the natural tendencies of Western harmony, the subjective expression of the music is reinforced.
A striking comparison could be made with two particular paintings by Gerstl: of the Schoenberg family, with their faces blurred and blended out as if in a dream that one is unable to recall properly; and the portrait of a nude woman sitting on a chair (Seated Female Nude), thought to be Mathilde Schoenberg, once again her face dis- torted beyond recognition. This concept of vague and often spontaneous connections plays a large part in the music as well. The pieces appear to be freed from their context, as in a dream sequence, often nightmarish and unable to find reconciliation. Against this backdrop of quiet restlessness in the first two pieces, the few lyrical episodes such as the second theme of the second piece gain more significance precisely because we are so clearly aware of their existence as fleeting moments.

This piece has become my favorite of op. 11. It's practically (and I think deliberately) unfathomable-I think you make it clearer, however, than many other pianists have. I hope I get to review you for American Record Guide one of these days. Correction: I think I have (the Schubert and Schoenberg CD), just can't find the review. (I must have written it for a 2024 issue, which is not indexed yet.)

Although I probably will never be able to understand or enjoy this music compared to other rep, your passion and involvement "forced" me to listen to the whole piece(three times!) and maybe even reevaluate my feelings about this music.

Thank you so much dear Larry! I am very happy you are liking the Schubert and also gave a chance to Schoenberg. The more time one gives it, the more it starts to make sense.
